Eric Mesa (djotaku) | 672 comments Summary: His friend is murdered by the monster. This was alluded to a couple chapters ago when he mentioned the poems that Clerval made during the journey. Also, this weakling gets fevers every time he's stressed. He ends up in jail and recovers. Then is proven innocent and leaves Ireland.

Commentary: Obviously, there is a HUGE chance that people think him crazy, especially since he does go crazy every time he's stressed, but his father cares for him more than nearly any parent I've ever seen in a book. He should confide in his father that they should plan something against the monster together.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments You know, I was joking about Ernest being the true mastermind behind the story, but this section of the book makes zero sense unless Victor is an unreliable narrator.

Somehow the creature gets from the Orkney Islands, where Victor's laboratory is, to mainland Scotland where he kidnaps Clerval without any witnesses spotting an eight-foot tall monster lurking about, then drags Clerval all the way to Ireland, murders him, and drops the body on the exact spot where Victor will come ashore the next day. That beggars belief.

It makes far more sense that Victor did murder Clerval, took him out to sea and deposited him in Ireland, and then got caught when he couldn't get his boat out to sea again. As for his acquittal, Papa Frankenstein is a rich man, and the folks where Victor was staying were dirt poor. It wouldn't take much to get them to say, "Oh, sure Victor was here on such-and-such a date."

Eric Mesa (djotaku) | 672 comments Certainly makes for a good "Wicked" version of Frankenstein
