J.J. Yeah, DUNE is one of my most favorite books to read. The first 3 books are great, in my opinion that is.

You guys are more than welcome to set up more buddy reads for this series, let me know in the Dune Scheduling thread in this folder and I will be your personal valet in setting them up :)

Pat the Book Goblin | 0 comments I started the book and I had to have the soundtrack of super metroid play in the background. I'm a geek lol

J.J. Who's super Metroid?

J.J. I'm going to start DUNE later on tonight. Not feeling well

Pat the Book Goblin | 0 comments You don't know the space alien franchise known as Metroid? That's it, we can't be friends. jk jk lol

Beste | 1163 comments I will be starting this tonight. Anyone still reading?

Yeah can't wait to see what you guys think after you read this you might want to watch the film by David Lynch personally I consider it a guide of how NOT to adapt a book but you guys might like it

Djokovic its a bit private but essentially I mad a mistake that got me really annoyed and I usually take this stuff hard and it put me in a bad mood

Choko (chokog) | 12597 comments Djokovic wrote: "Oh okay sorry for intruding. Do you guys mind if I join you for this read?"

Barry (boprawira) | 1212 comments Finished Deadhouse Gates earlier. On page 67/794

Right away we seem to be informed of who’s the bad guys and the good guys.

Interesting to note that though the people here seem to be wary of advances in technologies, but they still seem to rely on some hi tech stuff, considering they do interplanetary travels.

Just waiting for the plot to evolve. There are some strong hints obviously. (view spoiler)

Freemen (view spoiler)

message 22: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I really liked how so much depth Herbert puts into Arrakis and it is probably one of the best things about this book also I do like how the Arakeen people and the Fremen have some Arabian/ Middle eastern influences and I hope that in the reboot we will see most of these people being played by actors of middle eastern descent

Beste | 1163 comments OMG! I'm loving this book. @Barry knowing they are doomed keeps me on the hop because I'm still around the place (view spoiler)
Moreover, in first 100 pages we have seen colonisation of the worlds, warnings about AI's and how they doomed the mankind before, also a book like kindle!
Thinking this book was published before Armstrong set foot on the moon(1965, though it was written before and many publishers refused to publish it because of its absurdity), it is just shocking.

This is so different from what I thought this book was about (went in blind as usual) and I'm really loving all the politics.

Lena This is my favorite SciFi Book and what started my love of the genre. I wanted to be a bad ass Bene Gesserit.

My favorite Christmas present this year was the Folio Society Edition. Absolutely gorgeous. Sam Weber outdid himself!

Second that! I expected another same sci-fi book but this so over and beyond my expectations.

Barry (boprawira) | 1212 comments @ Beste yeah it’s a good device to keep you interested to find out how ... but I just dislike feeling crushed when I find out my fave characters are written off by the author. Not that I know that’s what’s gonna happen here.

On page 123/794
Lady Jessica (view spoiler)

Bene Gesserit (view spoiler)

Thoughts:

I really appreciate the use of religion in their politics.
I did not expect the time skips!
Jessica is so interesting! I actually really like her as a character.
I would HATE to live there, that dusty place just sounds terrible!!!

Sha | 1522 comments sttttarting late. I was sort of occupied this month and there's still 24 hours left in the deadline.

Barry (boprawira) | 1212 comments Up to page 450/794

So far really enjoying the adventure in this unique world. The pacing is a bit slow to my taste but still bearable. The omnipresent pov is slightly annoying at times, because you can switch POV within one sentence.

Lots of deep philosophical debates embedded as conversations in the book. I’ve noticed logic vs “softer skills” like language and observation skills debate. There’s obviously the ongoing reminders on the importance of ecology to human survival. There’s the debate on the nature of destiny / fate vs choices. Very well done. No need for a character to do a lengthy lecture to present the arguments.

@ Beste : yeah I’m sure (view spoiler) I don’t wanna read the summary for the next books in the series, cos I did it once and there’s spoilers *sigh. Fortunately, though I know Dune is a classic SF book, I’ve no idea at all what it’s all about, except there’s plenty of desert and sand. (view spoiler)

Sha | 1522 comments The prose is so very epic-y and epicy-prose is not my favourite thing. At all. However, I hav ebeen promised Ecology Plot and by god I will stick with it because Ecology plot.
