Terah (terahsutley) I was told by another author to join a writers group. That it is beneficial to writing. I just dont get how? Why would joining a group help with writing especially if you dont know how a group works.

also what else is on good reads that I should check out for writing? Is there anything the people really like on this website that I should check out?

Janice Elliott-Howard (jyhoward1066) | 20 comments Joining a writers group is a good idea. Writers/Authors are kindred spirits in many ways. In a writers group, you can find inspiration or motivation. I don’t know about you, but as an author, I always need to learn a new technique or skill that will enhance my story-telling ability and a writers group provides that for me. For those of us who write for a living, it is always nice to know that someone else shares the same frustrations when writer's block occurs or when your story comes to a dead stop because your protagonist loses sight of your intended journey. A writers group always gives me a jolt back on to the road to finishing my story.

It would also be a good idea to join a few reading groups. Many of the titles that are chosen are worth the time and effort. It will be entertaining as well as give you a perspective on writing from the view of an audience member. I have found that reading also helps to improve your writing skills. Find a genre within your prevue as well as one outside to try. There is no commitment outside of the amount of time you want to contribute to participate. The best part is that it allows for engagement that fosters ideas.

Good luck!

Terah (terahsutley) thank you for your comments, would you or have you ever paid to join a writers group? Or do you use good reads?

Terah, you are welcome. No, I have never paid to join a writers group. I do not know where you are in the world but I looked online into the networking community on Meetup.com. It lists many social groups by interest and you ask the join and start attending. Most are completely free and some require a small fee little 10 dollars. I am in three different writer focused groups and some meet once a month and others meet every other week. I use Good Reads for reading groups.

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 7 comments I would not pay to join a writers group. I would find other people who write in your genre. If you write romance novels, a military action novelist's opinions of your work aren't going to be that helpful.
If you write fantasy, SF or horror, go over to critters.org, where you can crit and be critted. If you write romance, go over to the RWA web site and look for a local group. There's sure to be someone near you.
