Next weekend I have had the great honour bestowed upon me of being the judge in a sort of battle of the bands type thing, well, the first round of it anyway. 5 bands all competing for a place in the final, with the ultimate winner getting a slot at the Mammothfest in Brighton in the summer.
The only problem is, of the 5 bands that I have to judge, I have friends in three of them, I have seen one other of them before and they were brilliant, and the other band I have neither seen nor heard before - this is gonna be tough and I just hope I don't lose any friends over it, I am sure I won't.
Take them all to one side and swear them to absolute secrecy - then tell them all in turn that you thought they were by far the best band ;o>

Do love the So album, one of the first 2 cds I bought circa 86 (shhhhh, but the other was Simply Red Picture Book - the PG is the only cd I have ever owned which developed cd rot whereby the aluminium coating became completely transparent and therefore unreadable in one small spot due to a pinhole defect in the lacquer) and I went to see him on the 30 anniversary tour where he did the whole album in sequence and got one of his support act who were a pair of rather anodyne folky lasses to do the Bushy bits which she did with more vigour and aplomb than their own stuff. PG wore a hooded anorak fully fastened throughout which perhaps indicates the gentility of the performance.SH - 4

Devastated!!!! My judging days have floundered before they even got started. The winter has arrived in Cork, snow and ice and stuff like that, and not only has it caused it a national bread shortage as the sturdy natives prepare for the strife ahead, but my gig has also been cancelled! Well not so much cancelled, but postponed until, well, I don't know when until :-(Right so, Peter Gabriel, there was only ever two songs in it, and grabbing the gold, by one point, Solsbury Hill, gives Tech yet another feather in his cap.
Posted with confidence, but pipped at the post, Sera69 gets the silver with Sledgehammer.
And way, way back but squeezing themselves on to the last remaining step on the podium, Collette, Brass Neck and Johnny with Don't Give Up, Games Without Frontiers and Biko respectively.
Good to see that Fishy Jim at least got his prediction on the button - nil points :-)
And to add my tuppenceworth to the Another Day debate. I was quite enjoying that one, until Bush kicked in and completely ruined it. I don't mind her too much usually, but she got that one all wrong for me, sorry.
I have to apologise to Steve for not voting - time just got away from me this week as I've been out on four nights and had a family occasion last night. I had made a start on the playlist and both Solsbury Hill and Sledgehammer were on my list, so my votes wouldn't have changed the result. Sorry!P.S. I've never liked Kate Bush either - too shrieky for me.
