I got a little carried away with my research into the history of the group. Some of the early information is a bit conjectural.
13.7 billion years ago - Big Bang creates the Universe: after a brief period when books were just too darn expensive (the so-called inflationary period) there was a longer period when book stores continually formed and went out of business too rapidly to support viable discussion groups.
Eventually, Galaxy formed (and other SF magazines as well) – this development called “Amazing,” “Astounding,” “Startling,” and “Thrilling.”
4.5 billion years ago – Earth formed and began to cool – primitive book groups complain about lack of atmosphere.
3.5 billion years ago – Life begins (but doesn’t publish SF until the 1950s).
1818 - Group discussion of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – comments include “Too gory,” “It can’t be hard SF – it’s about biology,” and “forgettable characters.”
1910 – Jack Williamson born – will publish before the first publications of and after the last publications of Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein.
1920 - Asimov born, shortly after the publication of his third book.
~ 2000 - I’ve heard reports discussions of Harry Turtledove’s Guns of the South and Vernor Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky.
