I'm currently reading Snowbound by Blake Crouch. This works for the Spring Challenge :-)

My book club chose this as one of its selections later this year. I'm really looking forward to reading it. There needs to be more stories about the part women played in the wars.

I may stream Red Sparrow. I don't have to see it at the theater. I do want to see Ready Player One at the theater, hopefully next week.

I haven’t seen Red Sparrow but it looks good. Can’t wait to hear what you think of Ready Player One! :)

I saw Ready Player One today. They made some significant changes from the book. I always find it interesting why screenwriters choose to deviate so far from the original. I liked it, but I probably won't watch it again. The book was better - that of course isn't a surprise though is it? :-) I like both of the main leads from their other work.

I watched Ready Player One in regular digital film, but I think this one might be worth watching in 3D :-)

I can understand a few changes need to be made but this was a lot of changes. I don't remember Stephen King's The Shining being one of the big challenges to earn a key. (view spoiler)

The Shining was Holladay's favorite horror film? I don't remember that in the book.

Last night some damn critter done gone torn up my scooter seat while I was sleeping. I think it was a squirrel because they always seem to be laughing at me. And of course you know about how I hit a mountain lion with my old scooter at the end of last Summer. My scooters seem to attract wildlife. I prefer when they attract hummingbirds.

I don’t remember The Shining being mentioned at all.
Sorry about the scooter-can you cover it with a tarp or something to protect it from the elements and the wildlife?

Hummingbirds are awesome. :)

I have a cover but I rarely cover it unless it's raining or snowing overnight. Twice, I've had it covered and the wind picked up unexpectedly and knocked it over, which does more damage.

I'm going to get a custom seat cover from Cheeky Seats at some point :-)

Yeah so it's scenes like The Shining playing such a big role in the film that really had me wondering :-) They didn't exactly go by the book.

Rachel | 3530 comments Finished The Astonishing Color of After The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan

Loved. This. Book.

I’m using it for the random task because I already read a book for the a-l-s task.

I love when magical realism is done well. It’s one of those stories that’s sad and beautiful at the same time.

message 70: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I love magic realism so I am really interested in reading The Astonishing Color of After.

Have you read any of Isabel Allende's books?

message 71: by Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl, Colorful Colorado (new)

Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl (dustpancrazy) | 2903 comments Mod
What exactly is magical realism? I wonder if I have read something that is considered magical realism.

message 72: by Christine (last edited Apr 02, 2018 09:31PM) (new)

Christine | 798 comments You see a lot of magic realism in Latin American writing. It has been described as having "fantastical elements in a realistic setting". A good example of this is in The House of the Spirits or Like Water for Chocolate, both books I love. Did you see the movie Coco, that can be considered magic realism too.

I did see Coco, that was a sweet film. I guess I probably like magical realism too and I didn't even know it was a thing :-)

Which is your favorite of hers?

I read Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate) by Laura Esquivel years ago and loved it.

I might be getting a new job - will keep you posted. I've been offered a position will a small business and have to decide today or tomorrow. The pay is less, but so is the stress. Full benefits are offered: medical/dental, overtime, paid vacation, paid holidays, 401K. Anyway, had a lot on my mind lately.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Sometimes money isn’t worth the stress-as long as you can manage with the reduction in salary. Hope you feel free to vent here about anything on your mind- what are friends for? :)
Sending good vibes your way. :)

I'll be in the Warehouse filling orders. Apparently my main tasks include pulling correct fabric ordered and cutting it to the desired length :-) It's gonna be a lot less stressful. The place is very organized and calm. I'm really rather excited. I'm going in tomorrow to pick up my new hire packet.

I plan to get a part-time job at the movie theater on the weekends to make up the difference. I'm at the movie theater every weekend anyway so I might as well get paid to be there and watch free movies. There is a new general manager who is much more nicer from when I previously worked there 2011-2012. I talked to him on Saturday and he said he'd watch for my application. I applied Saturday night.

message 93: by Christine (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 686 comments Congrats on your new job Dustin! Great minds think alike. I turned in my notice as well. After 13 years of driving, the last 3 1/4 years unloading freight, I am staying in one place. I am going to be a cashier at a gas station. I can walk or ride my bike to work. No more 70 mile commute, work 9 to 14 hrs and drive home. My body is extremely sore from all the bouncing around. Nervous, yet excited.
