Greg | 383 comments I will be reading The Broken Empire Trilogy by Mark Lawrence. A friend of mine and I are starting the series today. I was approached by another HA member who is also interested in the series so we decided to set up a Buddy Read for it. Not your typical horror but rather a GrimDark fantasy series it may still be down some of your alleys. Please feel free to join as we go down the dark bloody path of this series.

Book one starts with The Prince of Thorns.

I will be using audible for this project.

Feli (felifirefly) | 516 comments Thanks for opening this thread, Greg.
I will start book 1 tomorrow on my kindle. This will be my first Mark Lawrence book but I wanted to read him for a while now. So this is a good opportunity to finally get started :)

Greg | 383 comments Should be fun. Hopefully we all enjoy it. Honestly these 3 books aren’t much larger than The Terror 😏

Feli (felifirefly) | 516 comments Okay, I just started and I liked the beginning so far.
I am just a little confused because I've read some of the 1* reviews and they said it was 'so unnecessarily brutal' or they nearly 'had to vomit while reading the first chapters' and I braced myself and just thought... Well, it's okay to say it's kind of brutal but for this genre it's not THAT brutal...
Maybe I've read too much horror / dark fantasy in my life to get those reactions but I'm not sure what they expected..

So after finishing the Terror hopefully tomorrow I will have all the time to read this book and catch up a bit and I think I really will be liking it. :)
It will be a quick read I think with all the small chapters. This always keeps me motivated to read 'one more chapter' 😉

How is the audioversion of the book?

Greg | 383 comments I’m liking the audio version. I’m currently on chapter 16.

Yeah it didn’t seam all that bad. I guess the mention of a 13/14 year old boy going back and raping/killing some farmers daughters could be a little much for some whom don’t share our sensible tastes. But really most of those really bad scenes are just stated they are not really described. Then again I love Richard Laymon, Wrath James White, and the sort and you’re going to have to try pretty hard to make me uncomfortable.

Feli (felifirefly) | 516 comments Ah, you're fast. :)
I hope to reach 50% this evening.
I like how the past and present chapters work together and we thus get to know who is who and why they ended up together in this 'brotherhood'.

Greg | 383 comments Audible at work and whilst doing chores and shopping. When it comes to actual reading I have no time 😢 well I guess I could but then I’d have no time for my video games. 😏

message 9: by Feli (new)

Feli (felifirefly) | 516 comments Okay that works. I cannot hear Audible at work so that's a big plus for you.
I know the prob with the videogames, but have no time for them anymore.. I used to hear a lot of Audible while grinding/farming in my MMOs 😂
