message 370: by Aditya (new)

Aditya | 1893 comments Finished The Late Show by Michael Connelly. Usual Connelly, catch it if you have time to kill, forget it exists if you are busy. It has way too many 5 star ratings compared to its quality. Rating - 3/5.

message 374: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Yesterday was a quiet day at work so I started Still Life, my first Louise Penny book. I read until 1am, then had to give up because I became sleepy despite wanting to know more. I read about 60% of the book in the whole day, which is quite a lot for me. It's an interesting one, although I wouldn't say it is outstanding. Has anyone any advice on the series? Does it get better as it goes on?

message 375: by Ann (new)

Ann Marina, it's one of my favorite series. It's hard for me to address your question of 'does it get better as it goes on' because for me I loved the first book and have really enjoyed the series since. Besides the mystery in each volume, there's character growth and insights. You really get to feel like you know the people.

I guess not every book or series is for everyone, but I'd suggest you stick with it for a few books before deciding to drop it.

message 376: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) Kati I read that new Lisa Gardner book called Right Behind You and I really liked it

Thanks for your reply, Ann. I'm glad to know you like it so much. I'm actually enjoying the first book, just not so much as I thought I would. It kept me reading until 1am yesterday night, so this must mean something. I'm glad to know there's character development, I like that in a series. I guess I'll have to see what my impressions are when I finish the book, and I think I should follow your advice of sticking to the series for a few books.

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 44 comments @Marina the Inspector Ganache series by Louise Penny gets much much better. The first 2 are pretty pedestrian I agree but the later books are amazing (and surprisingly thrilling). I think the series gets really good around book 5 (The Brutal Telling).

I think a lot of readers, like me, love to return to Three Pines to sit by the fire and enjoy hot drinks and the company of Inspector Gamache and the good people of the town. Of course, there are some not-so-good murderous ones, as well, which keeps the plot turning!
