I agree, Ann. I know i really liked Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Høeg and look forward to others listed.

I've read 3 of those. I haven't even heard of many of the others and my interest is peaked.

I was a little surprised that TransAtlantic was chosen for Ireland since parts of the book are in the USA and Canada. Colum McCann was born in Ireland. It was impressive how receptive that the Irish were to Frederick Douglass while he was often reviled in the USA. There seemed to be common ground with many Irish living in poverty, starving, and feeling repressed by the English, and African-Americans being mistreated by slavery in the USA. It was an excellent book.

Connie, i wonder if that shared location is an aspect of the Ambassador's choices? The Peter Høeg book is set in Denmark and Greenland, which is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Not quite the same but it does have me wondering about the choices, in a good way.

It's good to hear that you enjoyed Smilla's Sense of Snow. I've had that book on my TBR list for years. I've never read a book set in Greenland.

To be fair, as i recall the Greenland part was more in an ice cave, although Smilla was raised in Greenland. I liked the book very much, i must say.

What a superb idea for a book list! Thank you Alias Reader for finding and sharing. I did encounter a problem when I got to the United Kingdom: the cover of the book wouldn't load and I did not see its title included in the blurb, but from the description I'm guessing it's Atonement by Ian McEwan?

I'd like to recommend the non-fiction book An African in Greenland. I was impressed with it when I read it some time ago.

Yes, the book is Atonement.
