Welcome to the insanity of being a writer Tim. It is a truly strange and wonderful profession. Where else will you spend years working on something, and if you are lucky, millions of people will then pay to read it then to shread it into itty bitty peices?

My advice is this: develop a thick skin--be able to take criticism, and be ready to take rejection. I'm only starting out myself but that is the one of the most important bits of advice I've gathered.

Another bit of advice - don't focus on the goal (publication). Learn to enjoy the process itself (the writing, editing etc). If you enjoy what you're doing, rejection doesn't matter.
