What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I remember almost nothing about this book except for one scene: the protagonist describing learning the fable of the ant and the grasshopper as a girl, and crying, and wondering or asking, “But why did the grasshopper have to die?”

Sorry I don’t have more - but only that scene resonated & stuck with me. Anyone? Thank you!!
