Ski the World
February 1, 2019 - April 30, 2019
13/15 as of 4/30/19- but continuing
now 15/15
1. AUSTRIA: Hohe Tauern National Park
Hohe Tauern NP is the largest protected area in the Alps. The region extends over three Austrian provinces: Tyrol, Salzburg and Carinthia and boasts more than 200 summits over 3,000 m including the highest mountain in the country, the Grossglockner at an impressive 3,798 m. Vast glacier fields, rock walls, meadows, mountain lakes, and rushing streams make the landscape a nature lover’s dream. In winter, the region’s 34 ski resorts become a skier’s paradise.
✔❉Read a book with a mountain on the cover or a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in GROSSGLOCKNER.- Nawal El-Saadawi- Woman at Point Zero 2/11/19
The sun is out and snow has covered the world in a myriad of glittering ice crystals and in the background stands the mighty Grossglockner. A day at the Grossglockner Ski Resort in Kals-Matrei is a fantastic experience, not just for winter sports enthusiasts, but also for photographers and anyone with an appreciation for truly breathtaking views. And for an exciting night time view take advantage of the floodlit slopes and toboggan runs.
✔❉Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter in RESORT.- in The Double by José Saramago 2/9/19, the MC's first name is Tertuliano.
The Rauris Valley is the largest settlement in the park region and is often nicknamed the “hidden jewel”. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of mega ski resorts, Rauris is filled with deeply rooted charm, treating families to a sense of true hospitality and quality. The ski area offers perfect slopes and unlimited skiing enjoyment for every generation and ability. The kids, too, are in perfect hands, both on the baby hill as well as at the children’s ski school.
✔❉Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in HOHE TAUERN NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum). - A Tramp Abroad by Mark Twain 2/13/19
2. FRANCE: Vanoise National Park
Located in the French Alps, Vanoise NP was created in 1963 and became the first national park of France. Its original intention was to help preserve the alpine ibex,
the iconic mountain goat of the alps. Their success is evident as they are now abundant throughout the park. Vanoise is a popular destination any season but during the winter months it is one of the leading ski areas in Europe with 13 ski resorts within the park’s boundaries.
❉Read a book with a wild animal on the cover -

or a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in ALPINE IPEX.
Nestled at the foot of Grande Casse, the highest peak in the area, is the charming village of Pralognan. This small scale ski resort is full of character, architectural heritage and the locals are welcoming and friendly. With the magnificent setting beneath Grande Casse and several amazing glaciers, skiing here is incredible. For non-skiers, you can ice skate in the Olympic rink, take an historic torchlight village tour, or enjoy a winter horseback ride to an alpine lake.
✔❉Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter in PROLOGNAN - Alice in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll 3/9/19
For art lovers, one ski resort has been doing something original for the past ten years. Courchevel Ski Report and the Bartoux Galleries took up the daring challenge of combining art and mountains by creating an open-air museum. This surrealist exhibition "Art at the Top" allows skiers to interact on the slopes with monumental sculptures inspired by the art made by the illustrious artist Dali during the 1980s.
✔❉Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in VANOISE NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum). - The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert 6/28/19
3. CANADA: Banff National Park
If you’re looking for a winter wonderland with some of the world’s best winter activities then you need to visit Banff NP in the heart of Alberta, Canada. The three ski resorts within the park are collectively known as the SkiBig3 and are a mecca for skiers and snowboarders alike, offering all levels of slopes. Two of them have incredible gondola rides that whisk you (warmly) up to the summit where you find jaw-dropping 360° Rocky Mountain views.
✔❉Read a book with three of the same thing on the cover (3 dogs, 3 people, 3 books, etc.) or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in ROCKY MOUNTAINS.- How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff 3/1/19
Banff’s crowning glory is Lake Louise and in winter it is hands down the most beautiful place in the world to ice skate! Surrounded by evergreen trees, jagged snow-capped mountain peaks and the prestigious Chateau Fairmont Hotel, you will feel like you are in a fairy tale. If you are visiting in January you can explore ice castles, ice bars and ice sculptures at the “magical” Ice Magic Festival hosted by the Chateau Fairmont.
✔❉Read a book with a main character whose first name starts with a letter in LOUISE. Umberto Eco is the MC in his own set of essays- How to Travel with a Salmon and Other Essays by Umberto Eco 2/19/19
Banff has some spectacular hiking trails and many are still accessible in winter though you may need a pair of snow shoes. A spectacular hike is the Johnston Canyon trail with its two dramatic frozen waterfalls. If you’re lucky you'll see ice climbers working their way up the frozen ice shoots. Warm up after all your activities at one of the three Hot Springs in the park. The naturally heated mineral water is the perfect remedy to soak tired muscles and restore your body’s defenses from the winter cold.
✔❉Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in BANFF NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum).- The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck 4/8/19
4. NORWAY: Jotunheimen National Park
Norway’s Jotunheimen NP is in the core of the wildest and most arctic mountain area
in Europe. The name means “Home of the Jotuns” which are giants from old Nordic mythology. The giants in this park are the mountains, the highest in northern Europe and the glaciers, the biggest on the continent. The Glacier Hikes the park organizes are

Many come to visit the Church of St. Sergius & Bacchus, known as the place where baby Jesus and family sheltered during King Herod's massacre of male babies. Let's Celebrate the Chinese New Year
February 1, 2019 - March 31, 2019
7/8as of 3/31/19 but finished 8/8 on 4/4/19
Tasks
✔1. Lunar Calendar: Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year is the first day of the new year on the lunar calendar. This calendar is based on the movement of the moon which is why the festival date changes every year. It has also long been called the Spring Festival because it marks the end of the long winter season and the beginning of spring.
🏮 Read a book that has the moon on the cover
or a book with a Spring setting.
✔2. History: It has been celebrated in China for thousands of years. The original legend tells of a lion-like monster named Nian that terrorized the Chinese villagers. One year, a wise monk advised them to use loud noises along with red paper cutouts hung over their doors to scare Nian away. It worked and the day the villagers were able to defeat Nian became the start of the New Year.
🏮 Read a book that is tagged RETELLING, MYTHOLOGY or FANTASY on its GR Homepage- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll 3/9/19
✔3. World-Wide: The Chinese New Year is one of the world’s most celebrated festivals with one sixth of it’s population participating. It is celebrated in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore as well as Chinatowns and other large cities all over the world. The celebration lasts 15 days, beginning the night before the new year, ending with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day.- Concrete by Thomas Bernhard 2/22/19 156p.
🏮 Read a book that takes place in an Asian country or a book with 15 (intact) in its total page count.
✔4. Zodiac Signs: The Chinese Zodiac cycle repeats every 12 years and features 12 different animals representing each year in a cycle. The signs play an integral part in Chinese culture and each animal has different meanings and characteristics assigned to it which are used to determine marriage compatibilities, career decisions and even the best time to have a baby. 2019 is the twelfth month in the cycle so it is the year of the pig.
🏮 Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in PIG or read a book published in 2012 or 2019. - George Milton is the MC in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck 3/19/19
✔5. Reunion Dinner: No matter where they are, people try their best to return home for the ritual Reunion Dinner on New Year’s Eve. The family feast includes special dishes like whole fish for prosperity, long noodles for happiness and long life, and sweet rice balls that brings family unity and togetherness. And they must make sure their plates are never empty, so their luck doesn't run out.
🏮 Read a book that has a family gathering in the story (tell us what it was for) -The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss 2/20/19- the family is gathered together as the result of a ship wreck...and stranded on an island for 13 years.
or a book with prepared food on the cover.
✔6. Red: Everything is Red!! In the Chinese culture it is the symbol of joy, happiness, and prosperity, and can ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Everything is decorated with red lanterns and paper cuttings; people buy new red clothing to wear and red envelopes filled with money are handed out as presents to children and family members.
🏮 Read a book with a cover that is primarily red (please post cover)-
or read a book where money is given to someone as a gift.
✔7. Lion & Dragon Dance: These popular dances usher in the new year in parades and celebrations hoping to bring prosperity and good fortune to all. Westerners often confuse the two dances. If there are two performers, one as the head and the other as the tail then it's the lion dance. The dragon dance has a team of nine or more performers, each holding a section of the dragon on poles, moving them in a manner that depicts the movement of the dragon.
🏮 Read a series book #2 or #9 or read a book with the word LION or DRAGON in the title.- How to Travel with a Salmon and Other Essays by Umberto Eco 2/19/19- #2 in a series
✔8. Fireworks & Firecrackers: A traditional part of the celebration is to light firecrackers. The Ancient Chinese believed that the loud noise would scare off the evil spirits. In some places, lighting real firecrackers has been banned so many decorate their homes with colorful plastic firecrackers. But large firework displays are still the norm, in fact, Chinese New Years can boast the largest usage of fireworks on the planet.
🏮 Read a book with a colorful abstract cover or read a book that has been banned at one time. Here is a list to help you out: Best Banned Censored and Challenged Books.- Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy 2/5/19- was originally censored when published.
