Belgium's Capital: Brussels
April 1, 2019 - April 30, 2019

6/6

Tasks

✔1. Grand Place
The Grand Place in Brussels is hidden away in the center of the city but when you enter on foot, you are guaranteed to be left awestruck – first by the beautiful 15th Century City Hall and then by the striking Neo-Gothic architecture of all the other buildings located around the square. Every two years in August, Belgian begonia cultivators decorate the Grand Place with a beautiful flower carpet of over 500,000 begonias creating an amazing tapestry of color.

✱ Read a book with flowers on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with over 500,000 ratings on GR OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in GRAND PLACE.- The Old Curiosity Shop BY Charles Dickens 4/14/19

✔2. Belgian Comic Strip Centre
It is not widely known but the city of Brussels is known for its comic book history.
After all, it is home to the legendary explorer Tintin, just one of the many characters represented at The Belgian Comic Strip Centre. Enjoy this nostalgic museum while learning how comics are created while perusing their impressive collection of over
7,000 original plates and drawings. Then grab a map and take the self-guided walking tour around Brussels Comic Strip Trail marveling at the 50 huge murals of comic strip art painted on the sides of buildings throughout the city.

✱ Read a book that includes a map or illustrations OR
✱ Read a book with a MC that starts with the letter T OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in BELGIAN COMIC BOOK CENTRE.- - The Private Dining-room and Other Verses by Ogden Nash 4/9/19
✔3. Atomium
Erected for the 1958 World Fair to symbolize a new ‘atomic age’, this jaw dropping stainless steel and glass sculpture is an accurate depiction of an iron molecule and stands over 100 meters tall. Today it houses multiple exhibition spaces dedicated to different aspects of Belgian culture, from science to the arts. Be sure to take the elevator to the top for the spectacular views of the city. Located at the foot of the Atomium is the miniature park: Mini-Europe. It’s a great place to take the kids to marvel at the scale models of over 300 of the continent’s best sights.

✱ Read a book in which science is important to the plot OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in Europe - Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson 4/4/19 - set in London
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ATOMIUM.

✔4. Old England Building
The Old England Building in Brussels was formerly a department store and was built in the very last year of the 19th Century. The building attracts visitors both for its stunning Art Nouveau facade and for the fascinating and vast musical museum it houses. It is a celebration of music in all its forms, as well as a repository for more than 2000 historic instruments. The emphasis is very much on listening, with auditory experiences around every corner, from shepherds’ bagpipes and Chinese carillons to harpsichords.

✱ Read a book that shows a musical instrument on the cover OR
✱ Listen to an audiobook - The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks 5/3/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in OLD ENGLAND BUILDING.

✔5. Parc du Cinquantenaire
This impressive park with its stunning triumphal arch, was commissioned by King Leopold II for the 1880 National Exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence. The structures were built in iron, glass and stone, symbolizing the economic and industrial performance of Belgium. Whether you plan on having a picnic on the grass while absorbing the stunning architecture, or wander through the vast collection of 35,000 artifacts housed in the museums, a trip here should be part of any trip to Brussels.

✱ Read a book that shows an ARCH on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in the 1800's - The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck 4/7/19- takes place in the 1860s.
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PARC DU CINQUANTENAIRE.

✔6. Manneken Pis & Friends
The people of Brussels have embraced a small, quirky statue of a peeing boy as their city symbol. A good part of its fame is due to the statue's enormous wardrobe of costumes. This tiny guy has over 200 tiny different outfits that are changed several times a week, according to a published schedule. The total collection of costumes may be viewed inside the City Museum. In the 1980’s two other peeing statues popped up in the city: Jeanneke Pis is a little girl squatting to pee and Het Zinneke is a dog doing what dogs do – peeing on a fire hydrant.

✱ Read a book that shows a statue on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC who is a fashion diva OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MANNEKEN PIS.-Loitering with Intentby Muriel Spark 5/22/19

Challenge #221- Wanderlust
International Dance Day
April 1, 2019 - May 31, 2019

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

International Dance Day
April 1, 2019 - May 31, 2019
8/8

SECTION ONE: About International Dance Day
3/3

✔1. International Dance Day is a global celebration of dance, created by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), which is the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. The event takes place every year on April 29th, the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet.

✽ Read a book that was published in April OR a book with a title that starts with a letter in UNESCO. - Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson 4/5/19

✔2. Every year, since its creation in 1982, an outstanding dance personality is selected to write a message to be shared to the world. ITI organizes a Gala Celebration event in a host city, with dance performances, educational workshops, humanitarian projects and speeches made by ambassadors, dignitaries, dance personalities and the selected Message Author for that year.

✽ Read a book with a MC who is a dancer OR a book with an event in it that includes dancing. Nora and her twin sister are the song and dance entertaining MCs of Wise Children by Angela Carter 5/11/19

✔3. The day strives to encourage participation and education in dance through events held on the date all over the world. Creativity is encouraged and cities have participated by hosting charity dance performances, street dance festivals, or even free lessons at dance schools or universities. So this April 29th, take to the dance floor and celebrate the wonderful art form with the world.

✽ Read a book that was educational (tell us what you learned) - The Map Thief by Michael Blanding 4/23/19- I learned how lenient the laws are when people are caught cutting and stealing ancient valuable maps from old books...and how cowardly some universities were to admit that their maps were stolen for fear of losing support from their benefactors.
OR read a book whose total page count includes 2 AND 9 (in any order).

SECTION TWO: Dances from Around the World
5/5

BALLET: Ballet originated in the 15th century in Italy and France and
by the 18th century had spread throughout Europe. It is without a doubt one of the most famous and highly technical of all performance dances and is often considered the core of all modern dance. Often set to story-driven orchestrated music it is a poised and graceful style of dance that requires much training and technique.

✔✽ Read a book that takes place in Italy or France OR read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in BALLET. - Little Nell in Charles Dickens- The Old Curiosity Shop 4/14/19

BELLY DANCE: As it has for thousands of years, belly dancing still thrives today. Originally known as Raqs Sharki, it was an Arabic social dance from Egypt. It has evolved to take many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costume and dance style. All over the world, professional dancers perform this exotic dance as entertainment, though it is also a dance to do for fun or even fitness with friends and family.

✔✽ Read a book that takes place in the Middle East OR a book with a title that has two consecutive LL's in it - Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan 4/20/19

BHANGRA: The Bhangra originated in the Punjab region of India as a folk dance for the celebration of the harvest. It is now a fun and flamboyant dance performed across India at all kinds of social occasions. It has become famous by its use in Bollywood films produced in the country. In fact, this energetic and jovial dance is creating quite a phenomenon and spreading all over the world.

✽ Read a book that takes place in India OR read a book with a fun and flamboyant character (tell us who).

FLAMENCO: This expressive dance emerged from the Spanish cultures of the Iberian Peninsula in the 1700’s. It consists of three elements: cante (the song), baile (the dance), and guitarra (guitar playing). Each has its own traditions, but the word Flamenco is most often associated with the dance with its percussive footwork and intricate hand, arm, and body movements. Its popularity has moved across the world and Japan’s Flamenco schools now outnumber those in Spain.

✽ Read a book that takes place in Spain or Japan OR read a book that is part of a trilogy.

HOPAK: Named after the Ukrainian term hopaty, which means “to jump”, Russians and Ukrainians have been performing this dance since the 16th century. Originally performed by military men as a dance of victory, it is a predominately male dance, composed of visually and technically amazing acrobatic feats, including many jumps, squats and spins.

✔✽ Read a book that takes place in Ukraine or Russia OR read a book written by a male author. - Waiting for the Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee 4/2/19

IRISH STEPDANCE: This traditional Irish dance is quite popular today and performed all over the world. The dance can be performed solo or by a group and is characterized by a stiffened upper body while performing quick and intricate footwork that is a combination of ballet and tap dancing. The charming rhythm patterns and artistic flows created by the feet is a true delight to witness.

✽ Read a book that takes place in Ireland OR read a book with an intricate plot line.

OTEA: This traditional Polynesian dance from Tahiti is characterized by its vigorous hip shaking to spirited fast percussions. The dancers re-enact stories of everyday life with their hands while their hips are in constant motion. This technique is most impressive when the dancers maintain their hips shaking while executing the formation changing choreography. It is often performed at luaus with the dancers in elaborate costumes incorporating long "grass" skirts and decorated headpieces.

✽ Read a book that takes place on an island in the Pacific Ocean OR read a book with an ocean scene on the cover.

POLKA: Polka is a European dance with a Bohemian origin. The word “pulka” is derived from the Czech phrase for “half-step,” which refers to the dance pattern of lightly stepping from one foot to the other. The dance migrated to the US with Eastern European immigrants and remains quite popular in areas of the Midwest and Great Lakes Region. For most people, polka is linked at the hip with the accordion, and indeed, it's the force behind every polka band.

✽ Read a book that takes place in the US Midwest OR read a half step series book.

TANGO: This partner dance is loaded with history, romance and passion. Originating in the 1880’s in Uruguay and Argentina, it is a dance associated with style and expressiveness. It is most difficult to master and never fails to amaze each time it is performed. But this is not just a dance for professionals; in cities all over the world there are hundreds of milongas or special dance clubs that give tango classes and stay open all night so you can dance the night away.

✔✽ Read a book that takes place in South America
- set in Paraguay- The News from Paraguay by Lily Tuck 4/7/19
OR a book tagged Romance on its GR Homepage.

TINIKLING DANCE: This dance originated in the Philippines and imitates the movements of a local bird called ‘Tikling’. Bamboos are tapped on the ground in order to create patterns of beats and a pair of dancers mimic the graceful actions that the bird makes in order to escape the bamboo traps set by the farmers. They must move quickly to avoid getting a foot caught by the fast-moving poles.

✔✽ Read a book that takes place in eastern Asia -Xinran- The Good Women of China: Hidden Voices 4/11/19
OR read a book with a bird on the cover.

CCC-
RUSSIAN COSMONAUTS
DURATION: APRIL 1 -30, 2019

7/7

April 12 is Russian Cosmonaut Day, and in keeping with our interest this year in space exploration, here is a challenge based on some of the notable Cosmonauts that made significant contributions to the field.

✔YURI GAGARIN: Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin is the most famous cosmonaut of all time. While dogs and satellites had already ventured into space, Gagarin was the first human to do so. On April 12, 1961, the Vostok 1 spacecraft shot up to an altitude of nearly 188 miles. For the next 108 minutes, Gagarin orbited around the Earth traveling at 18,000 miles an hour.
★ Read a book originally published in the 1960s; tell us the year - 1968- In Watermelon Sugar by Richard Brautigan 6/9/19

OR a book whose title begins with Y; disregard A, An and The.

✔KONSTANTIN FEOKTISTOV: Born in 1926, Konstantin Feoktistov was the first civilian and first non-member of the Soviet Communist Party to travel into space. Voskhod 1, launched on October 12, 1964, was his only flight, but his impact on space technology was far from finished. He went on to lead a Soviet space design bureau and worked on the designs for two space stations, Salyut and Mir. The Feoktistov crater on the far side of the Moon is also named for him.
★ Read a book with the moon shown prominently on the cover; post the cover - Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson by Jeanette Winterson 4/4/19
OR a book with a main character who earns his/her living as a scientist; tell us the career.

✔SERGEI KRIKALEV: Cosmonaut and mechanical engineer Sergei Krikalev has logged more time in outer space than any other person in history, a total of 803 days, 9 hours and 39 minutes over the course of six separate missions. One such mission saw him on board the Mir space station between May 1991 and March 1992, just as the Soviet Union was breaking up, a circumstance that led many to dub him “the last Citizen of the USSR.” He also has an asteroid named after him.
★ Read a book that is the last (or most recently published) book of a series; tell us the series OR a book with a 6 in its total page count; tell us how many pages.- The Private Dining-room and Other Verses by Ogden Nash 4/9/19- 169p.

✔ANDRIYAN NIKOLAYEV: Andriyan Nikolayev flew endurance record-setting missions aboard the Vostok 3 (solo) and Soyuz 9 spacecraft. The Vostok 3 spaceflight was launched on August 11, 1962, and lasted almost four days. Nikolayev orbited the Earth 64 times and became the first person to transmit a television broadcast live from space. On June 1, 1970, cosmonaut Vitali Sevastyanov accompanied Nikolayev on the Soyuz 9 mission. With a duration of 17 days and 17 hours, it broke the previous endurance flight record set by NASA’s 1965 Gemini 7 mission. During their time in space, both men conducted experiments, played chess with the on-ground control team, watched a World Cup soccer game, communicated with their families via television links, and even voted.
★ Read a book in which a board game of some kind is played; tell us the game OR a book that is based on a television series or that spawned a television series; tell us the series.
NOTE: Television only, NOT a movie- Heidi by Johanna Spyri 5/17/19
(According to Wikipedia, there was a German/Swiss television series based on Heidi in 1978.

✔VALERI POLYAKOV: Valeri Polyakov holds the record for the most continuous amount of time spent in space. He earned this distinction by logging over 14 consecutive months aboard the Mir space station, from January 1994 until March 1995. Polyakov’s stint aboard the Mir station proved that humans could maintain good physical and mental health during prolonged periods spent beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. His time in space provided us with vital information on how the human body reacts to environments with little to no gravity, findings that could prove useful for eventual manned missions to Mars.
★ Read a book with a human body (head to toe) shown prominently on the cover; post the cover - Waiting for the Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee by J.M. Coetzee 4/2/19
OR a book with a main character whose first name begins with a letter in POLYAKOV; tell us the character.

✔GHERMAN TITOV: On August 6, 1961, 25-year-old Gherman Titov became the second man to travel into space, just four months after fellow cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic first mission. What’s more, he still holds the record as the youngest person in space. In total, Titov was amongst the stars for 25 hours and 18 minutes. During his voyage on board the Vostok 2 spacecraft, he ate lunch, took the first space snooze (which proved somewhat difficult in zero gravity because his arms kept flapping about) and recorded the first “out of this world” footage of Earth.
★ Read a book that takes place in space-The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks 5/3/19
OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in GHERMANTITOV; post a link to the author's GR page

✔VALENTINA TERESHKOVA: Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to explore outer space on June 16, 1963, when she was launched from Russia’s secret station in Baikonur, in central Asia. Aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft, she orbited Earth 49 times, traveling a total of 1,250,000 miles in just under three days. The female cosmonaut program was disbanded in 1969, and Svetlana Savitskaya became only the second woman to travel into space in 1982, almost 20 years after Tereshkova.
★ Read a book by a new-to-you FEMALE author - Lily Tuck- The News from Paraguay 4/7/19

OR the very first book you added to your GR want-to-read shelf that is still unread (or your own personal TBR list, for those who don't keep a list on GR)

CHALLENGE RULES :
See this thread for more detailed rules for all CCC challenges.

♦ If you want to participate in this challenge, please sign up by posting at least a partial list of the challenge requirements. This gives us a post to link you to, which you can use to update your books as the challenge progresses.

♦ Unless otherwise noted, books must be at least 150 pages long. (See the link above for rules regarding graphic novels.) Books may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged :) Re-reads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book. You must read at least half of the book AFTER the challenge begins in order to count it for this challenge.

♦ For each book you read, please post a link to the title, and indicate the author and the date you finished reading it. If a challenge task gives several options, please make it clear which option you’ve chosen. If the task calls for an item on the cover or specific author initials or name/s, you must include a link to the book cover and/or author's name, respectively. To avoid spoiling a book for other readers, please use spoiler tags, if necessary, when explaining your book choices.*
* For help with posting spoiler tags, see this post: Spoiler tags
* If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title, cover or author, see the instructions here: Add a link to the book title, book cover and/or author

♦ When you complete the challenge, please copy and paste your entire list as a new message at the end of the challenge thread. If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your links and formatting. If you don’t repost your list, with appropriate links, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge. Please do NOT simply post a link back to your original post.

Spring 2019 Scavenger Challenge - Easter Around the World
Duration: Mar 21, 2019 - Jun 20, 2019

I was brought up in a place that used to be first a Portuguese and then a British colony, and we have a lot of holdover traditions from both. For Easter, I remember the 40 days of Lent preceding it, and mass said in Church on the day of. I'm not sure there was ever an egg hunt, that I learned after coming to the US. I've even participated in a few after my son was born. This challenge is basically a cross between an egg hunt and trivia about how Easter is celebrated around the world. (Very differently, apparently). Enjoy, and happy spring!

Read a book that fits one of the options for each item. But there's a catch! You can't reach the chocolate egg without having finished all five tasks that precede it, but you can read the five tasks within the set in any order. So this will be how you'd do the challenge:

✔Complete tasks 1-5 in any order.
✔Complete 6.
✔Complete 7-11 in any order.
✔Complete 12.
Complete 13-17 in any order.
Complete 18.

16/18

The Challenge

Begin. Choose a genre! You'll be reading from this genre until you get to the first chocolate egg, so make sure to choose one broad enough.

First Genre- Books set outside the United States

✔1. In Florence, locals celebrate a 350-year-old Easter tradition known as Scoppio del Carro, or "explosion of the cart." An ornate cart packed with fireworks is led through the streets of the city by people in colorful 15th century costumes before stopping outside the Duomo. The Archbishop of Florence then lights a fuse during Easter mass that leads outside to the cart and sparks a lively fireworks display. The meaning behind the custom dates back to the First Crusade, and is meant to ensure a good harvest.
🥚 Read a book with any kind of vehicle on the cover (post the cover) - My Car in Managua by Forrest D. Colburn 6/30/19 My Car in Managua by Forrest D. Colburn

-or- a book that contains the word "FIRE" in the title (compound words and variations are fine).

✔2. Children in Sweden dress up like witches and go begging for chocolate eggs in the streets with made-up faces and scarves around their heads, carrying bunches of willow twigs decorated with feathers. In some parts of Western Finland, people burn bonfires on Easter Sunday, a Nordic tradition stemming from the belief that the flames ward off witches who fly around on brooms between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
🥚 Read a book with witches in it -or- read a book in which characters fight something evil. - Gould's Book of Fish: A Novel in Twelve Fish by Richard Flanagan 3/26/19- the characters try to survive the evil prison wardens in Tasmania.
✔3. Don't forget a fork if you're in the southern French town of Haux on Easter Monday. Each year a giant omelet is served up in the town's main square. The omelet uses more than 4,500 eggs and feeds up to 1,000 people. The story goes, when Napoleon and his army were traveling through the south of France, they stopped in a small town and ate omelets. Napoleon liked his so much that he ordered the townspeople to gather their eggs and make a giant omelet for his army the next day.
🥚 Read a book with food of any sort on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which a character is a veteran (any branch of the armed forces, any era). - Sergeant Getúlio by João Ubaldo Ribeiro 3/24/19
✔4. On the morning of Holy Saturday, traditional "pot throwing" takes place on the Greek island of Corfu. People throw pots, pans and other earthenware out of their windows, smashing them on the street. Some say the custom derives from the Venetians, who on New Year's Day used to throw out all of their old items. Others believe the throwing of the pots welcomes spring, symbolizing the new crops that will be gathered in the new pots.
🥚 Read a book with something broken on the cover (post the cover) -
broken ticket on cover- The Bellarosa Connection by Saul Bellow 8/1/19- The Bellarosa Connection by Saul Bellow
or- read a book that ends a series (tell us the series).

✔5. Easter is such a popular time for Norwegians to read crime novels that publishers actually come out with special "Easter thrillers" known as Paaskekrimmen. The tradition is said to have started in 1923 when a book publisher promoted its new crime novel on the front pages of newspapers. The ads resembled news so much that people didn't know it was a publicity stunt.
🥚 Read a book in which a murder occurs - Sexing the Cherry by Jeanette Winterson by Jeanette Winterson 4/4/19
-or- read a book whose author's initials (middle counts if used) are in the word "PAASKEKRIMMEN".

You've reached a Chocolate Egg!
✔6. Reward yourself with a short book of your choice (150-250p, any genre). - Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie 8/8/19

Don't forget to choose a different genre for the next set!

2nd Genre- Fiction

✔7. On Good Friday the Pope commemorates the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the Colosseum. A huge cross with burning torches illuminates the sky as the 14 Stations of the Cross are described in several languages. Mass is celebrated on the evening of Holy Saturday, and on Easter Sunday, thousands of visitors congregate in St. Peter's Square to await the Pope's blessing from the church's balcony, known as Urbi et Orbi (To the City and to the World).
🥚 Read a book with the words CITY or WORLD in its title/subtitle (compound words are fine) - The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells-192p.-8/13/19
-or- read a book whose main characters are not from your country (I mean, you could read a book set in your country, but with immigrant main characters, for example. Tell us how your book fits).

✔8. Pouring water on one another is a Polish Easter tradition called Śmigus-dyngus. On Easter Monday, boys try to drench other people with buckets of water, squirt guns or anything they can get their hands on. Legend says girls who get soaked will marry within the year. The refreshing tradition has its origins in the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko on Easter Monday in 966 AD.
🥚 Read a book with water on the cover (post the cover) -The Black Joke by Farley Mowat-218p.-8/13/19- The Black Joke by Farley Mowat
or- read a book in which a marriage takes place.--Oh so many princesses marrying various men in

✔9. In Bulgaria, people don’t hide their eggs - they have egg fights – and whoever comes out of the game with an unbroken egg is the winner and assumed to be the most successful member of the family in the coming year. In another tradition, the oldest woman in the family rubs the faces of the children with the first red egg she has colored, symbolizing her wish that they have rosy cheeks, health and strength.
🥚 Read a book with a mostly red cover (post the cover) -The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter -8/11/19- 187p.- The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter

or- read a book which is a winner of a Goodreads Choice award (tell us the year and category).

✔10. In Jerusalem, Christians celebrate Good Friday by walking the same path Jesus did on the day he was nailed to the cross. Taking note of his pain that fateful day, some of those who participate carry a cross with them in remembrance. On Easter Sunday, many pilgrims attend a church service at Garden Tomb, the area Jesus was believed to have been buried.
🥚 Read a book in which a main character suffers a great deal of pain- Both of the main characters have emotional pain and then physical pain as they commit suicide in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare-283p.- 8/30/19
-or- read a book with an X somewhere in the title or the author's name.

✔11. In Prizzi, Sicily, the Abballu del diavolo, a representation of devils from locals wearing terrifying masks of zinc and dressed in red robes, is celebrated on Easter morning. Those dressed in costume pester as many "souls" as they can (which really means making them pay for drinks) before the afternoon when the Virgin Mary and the risen Christ save the day by sending the devils away with angels.
🥚 Read a book which has something that terrifies you -
-or- read a book that is practically everywhere pestering you to read it (you've seen this book on blogs, discussed by friends, on bestseller lists etc.)- also this book kept popping up on many of my challenge lists- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller 8/27/19

You've reached a Chocolate Egg!
✔12. Reward yourself with a guilty pleasure book of any genre.- They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy 9/2/19 -122p.

Don't forget to choose a different genre for the next set!
Next Genre- Classics-

✔13. In 1991, Rabbit-Free Australia launched a campaign to replace the Easter bunny with the Easter bilby, or rabbit-eared bandicoot. In Australia, rabbits are widely considered pests for destroying crops and land. Companies now make chocolate bilbies for Easter, with proceeds benefiting the endangered animals.
🥚 Read a book with an animal on the cover (any animal, bonus for the ones Australia considers pests, post the cover) -or- read a book set on an island.- on Great Britain- The Complete Tilling Tales: Mapp and Lucia Short Stories by Geoff Martin 10/21/19

✔14. Christianity in Indonesia was brought here by Portuguese missionaries, and statues from this time are carried through the streets. Young men consider it an honor to be chosen to play Jesus and be tied to the cross in various locations.
🥚 Read a book set in Asia (tell us where) - China- The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham 10/15/19
or- read a book in which a main character is entrusted with a noble task (tell us how the book fits).

✔15. In Haiti, Holy Week is marked by colorful parades and traditional “rara” music played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums, and even coffee cans. The holiday is a mixture of Catholic and Voodoo traditions. Voodoo believers make an annual pilgrimage to the village of Souvenance and make animal offerings to the spirits.
🥚 Read a book in which music plays a role -or- read a book whose cover is multi-colored (post the cover).- Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson 10/3/19
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

✔16. Bermudians celebrate Good Friday by flying home-made kites, and eating codfish cakes and hot cross buns. The tradition is said to have begun when a local teacher from the British Army had difficulty explaining Christ’s ascension to Heaven to his Sunday school class. He made a kite, traditionally shaped like a cross, to illustrate the Ascension.
🥚 Read a book with a large expanse of sky on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book whose title starts with a letter in "BERMUDA" (ignore a, an, and the). - The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky 9/4/19-144p.

Trinidad & Tobago's Capital: Port of Spain
May 1, 2019 - May 31, 2019

Tasks 6/6

✔1. The National Museum
Inside this elegant white Victorian building is the National Museum and Art Gallery. Originally named the Royal Victoria Institute, it was built as preparation for Queen Victoria's jubilee. It now houses a variety of historical and cultural exhibits that help you learn what has shaped this country. Be sure to check out the permanent exhibition that honors Carnival, the country's vibrant annual celebration. The art galleries provide a showcase for local and regional work, with the highlight being the small Cazabon Gallery, home to the paintings of Trinidad’s famous 19th century painter.

✱ Read a book with a white cover OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL or CULTURAL on its GR homepage - Shame by Salman Rushdie 5/1/19-"Cultural"
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE NATIONAL MUSEUM.

✔2. Magnificent Seven
No visit to Port of Spain would be complete without seeing the Magnificent Seven. This group of historic buildings pays homage to T&T’s European heritage. They date from the early 1900's and include such architectural marvels as the Queen’s Royal College, the Gingerbread House, Stollmeyer’s Castle and Whitehall. It is a nostalgic experience to walk down the street and see these majestic old buildings, marveling at their turrets and gorgeous iron work.

✱ Read a book with a historic building on the cover OR
✱ Read a series book #7 or a book with 7 in the total page count- A Lost Lady by Willa Cather 5/6/19- 167 pages
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

✔3. Fort George
This historic Trinidadian structure provides visitors with a taste of the island's colonial heritage. Built in 1804 to protect Port of Spain, it was more often used as a hiding place for precious belongings by the rich in times of revolt. In 1883, a Victorian wooden signal station was built, providing a stark contrast to the fort's original cannons and dungeons. While both structures are worth exploring, the panoramic views are what make the visit here totally worthwhile. On a clear day you can see as far as the hills of Venezuela.

✱ Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in FORT OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in the 1800's - Heidi by Johanna Spyri 5/17/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FORT GEORGE.

✔4. National Academy for Performing Arts
You can’t miss these two architecturally impressive concert and teaching venues: The National Academy for Performing Arts North and South, known to the locals as NAPA and SAPA. NAPA’s stunning design comprises a cluster of domes configured to resemble the national flower, the Chaconia; while SAPA has a design inspired by a G-Clef. Both are integral to a national strategy to develop performing arts and local culture by investing in the country’s raw talent, specifically in their steelband and calypso music.

✱ Read a book with a single flower or a musical symbol on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with NORTH or SOUTH in the title (variations accepted) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL ACADEMY.- Wise Children by Angela Carter 5/11/19

✔5. Steel Panyard Tour
Trinidad is the birthplace of the steel drum - the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century. The best way to hear and experience live steel drum music is to take a Steel Panyard tour that visits several authentic neighborhood pan yards where local bands play and practice each night. Explore this cultural night life as you venture from yard to yard. Enjoy the Calypso sounds of the Caribbean floating through the air while taking in the intoxicating smells and flavors of the local street food. It's a great way to "lime" (hang-out) and dance the night away.

✱ Read a book with circular item on the cover - The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks 5/3/19
OR
✱ Read a book with a setting that has a "neighborhood" feel to it OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in STEEL PANYARD TOUR

✔6. Maracas Bay
You can’t come to the Caribbean without heading to the beach!! Maracas Bay is known for its beautiful white sand, tall palm trees and luscious mountain range in the horizon. It’s the perfect place to experience every kind of water sport under the sun or just to relax dipping your feet in the warm sand. Any day you’ll find surfers swooping on the waves, kayakers, snorkelers and divers exploring the sea’s depths. The beach is also renowned for its famous huts that sell "shark and bake," deep-fried shark meat baked in a delicious pastry dough.

✱ Read a book with a beach on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC that participates in a water sport (tell us what) OR
