✔1. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
This glorious piece of modern Islamic architecture was a gift to the nation from Sultan Qaboos to mark his 30th year of reign. It gleams from the tips of its four minarets and gold dome right down to the white marble flooring. The main prayer hall is breathtaking with stunning chandeliers and a vast Persian carpets that took 600 women four years to weave. The mosaic work throughout the mosque is intricate and impressive. It is one of the only mosques in Oman that allows non-Muslin visitors so take the opportunity to walk the halls and study all the handcrafted details.

The opera house complex consists of a concert theatre, auditorium that seats over 1000 people, formal landscaped gardens, cultural market, luxury restaurants and an art center for musical, theatrical and operatic productions. The stark contemporary Omani architecture is meant to be a great contrast to the exquisite interior auditorium with beautiful marble, inlaid wood and arabesque designs. Some of the most famous names in opera and ballet have performed here since its inauguration in 2011, and the quality of the productions regularly wins international acclaim.

Meaning Flag Palace, it is fitting that when the Sultan is in residence the Omani flag at the main entrance is raised. Located in Old Muscat, this colorful palace among the Omani white is a bit of
a surprise and is impressively staged at the end of a long pedestrian boulevard. It is neighbored by other interesting government buildings and has two 16th century forts on either side of it. Although it is not open to the public, you can walk around the yard and gardens and even walk behind for a gorgeous view of the bay.

Shops selling Omani artifacts and souvenirs jostle among more traditional textile, hardware and jewelry stores. Bargaining is expected although discounts tend to be small. The best buys can be found on leatherware and llama wool pashminas. For a great opportunity to learn the art of bargaining and fun people watching, arrive after 5 pm when locals venture out for a good haggle.

Celebrating Dad Around the World
June 1, 2019 - July 31, 2019
8/8
Tasks
✔️1. USA: After many failed attempts to start a nation-wide holiday to bring recognition to America’s father’s, Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first Father’s Day in the US on June 19, 1910. It was held at a YMCA in Spokane, Washington and President Wilson came to speak on the importance of father figures in society. But it wasn’t until 1966 that President Johnson issued a proclamation making the third Sunday in June each year Father’s Day. It became a permanent federal holiday in 1972.
♥ Read a book with a MC that is a father - in his will, the MC reveals he is a father- The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19
or read a book that is first in a series.
✔️2. Europe & Latin America: Recognizing dads has been going on for centuries. Catholic Europe has been honoring fathers on "The Feast Day of Saint Joseph" since the Middle Ages. It is a day reserved to celebrate fatherhood and is still observed in March throughout Europe and Latin America. In the spirit of honoring the father of Jesus, all fathers are remembered and festive family meals are shared.
♥ Read a book that takes place in Europe or Latin America -England-Moonraker by Ian Fleming 6/6/19
or read a book with a character named Joseph (variations accepted).
✔️3. Nepal: Another religious based celebration of fathers is the Nepalese ritual Gokarna Aunsi that happens in late summer depending on the year. It’s a time for children to honor their fathers and includes a special ceremony in which the boys touch their heads to their father’s feet and the girls touch their heads to their father’s hands, showing their respect and love.
♥ Read a book with hands or feet shown prominently on the cover or read a book where a special ceremony happens (tell us what it was). - a funeral in In Watermelon Sugar by Richard Brautigan 6/9/19
✔️4. Russia: An interesting Father’s Day equivalent in Russia began as a military celebration commemorating the creation of the Red Army. "Defender of the Fatherland Day" happens on February 23 and is now simply referred to as “Men’s Day” and honors fathers and military veterans with parades, processions and giving of gifts.
♥ Read a book that has a character with a military background- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller 8/27/19
or read a book with the word DAY in the title (variations such as Friday or Holiday accepted).
✔️5. Thailand: Another tribute to fathers with a political beginning happens in Thailand on December 5th. It's the birthday of their widely admired King Adulyadej who is called the “father of their country”. The King commemorates the day with an annual speech and initially everyone dressed in yellow to present their fathers and grandfathers the "masculine" Canna flower. Tradition changed a few years ago and pink is the new color to wear, inspired by a rose colored jacket the King wore one year.
♥ Read a book with a cover that is mostly yellow - My Car in Managua by Forrest D. Colburn 6/30/19

and/or pink or read a book published in December.
✔️6. Australia: Aussies celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September and take it to a new level with an award ceremony. The YMCA in the Australian state of Victoria invites children to nominate their dad or father figure for the Local Community Father of the Year award. Then The Father's Day Council of Victoria chooses one of the 32 fathers from each community as their Father of the Year.
♥ Read a book that has been nominated or won an award (tell what award) - Yasmina Khadra- Morituri 6/2/19- Trophée 813 for Meilleur polar francophone (1997)
or read a book by an author whose first OR last name starts with a letter in YMCA.
✔️7. Just Have Fun: Several countries really encourage their fathers to have fun. Man’s Day in Germany has men organizing hikes or other “male-oriented” gatherings with plenty of food and alcohol involved. Father’s Day in South Africa is often spent fishing and father’s in Mexico often participate in the 21K race in Mexico City, called the “Carrera Día del Padre, afterwards celebrating with family parties with plenty of delicious food and music. - The Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton 6/21/19

♥ Read a book where the characters go on a hike or go fishing or read a book with food or alcohol shown on the cover.
✔️8. Father Skeleton: An old macabre folktale has influenced the Father's Day tradition in several countries. In Nordic folklore, the Stommefader, or “Skeleton Dad,” is said to run through the woods crying that the devil has swallowed his son so men act out the story by running through the town streets at midnight shouting the same. In Uruquay some families honor dads by hanging a small skeleton outside their homes and in Scotland families build papier-maché models of Peter Bones and gather at nightfall to burn them at a bonfire. Very strange but true!
♥ Read a book tagged FOLKLORE or RETELLING on its GR Homepage or read a book that has a macabre scene in it.- scenes of rape and a forced sex change operation in The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter -8/11/19- 187p.

Challenge #271- Game Night
Game Night Summer Carnival > Carnival Rides July 1 - August 31
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Game Night Summer Carnival > Carnival Rides July 1 - August 31
15/15
✔1. The Ferris wheel made its debut at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. At least that’s what George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. always said. One year earlier, William Somers designed and built three wooden wheels—each measuring 50 feet in diameter—in New York and New Jersey. Both men owed a debt to the similar, yet awkwardly named, wooden “pleasure wheels” invented in 17th century Bulgaria.
* read a book with a wheel on the cover. - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming 7/15/19-

Or
* Read a book set in Chicago, New York, or New Jersey.
✔2. Bumper Cars
Electric cars may seem like a modern advancement, but we’ve been driving them—and more importantly, crashing them—for a century. There's some dispute over who invented the road-raging carnival favorite, but one thing all scholars can agree on: how difficult early versions were to steer.
* read a book where you can find all the letters in the word CAR in the title. - A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett 7/9/19
Or
* Read a book where the characters go on a road trip.
✔3. Carousel
Carousels with wooden horses were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. When crusaders returned to Europe, they brought the device back with them. The spinning attraction became especially popular in France, where 17th century riders tried to pierce a target while moving at high speed. The power source? Actual horses!
* read a book where the characters go horseback riding. Or
* Read a book set in Europe.-UK- The Return of Mr. Campion: Uncollected Stories by Margery Allingham 7/19/19-165p.
✔4. The Rollercoaster
Although the first patent went to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, he wasn’t the first person to make a rollercoaster. Modern rollercoasters descended from “Russian Mountains,” winter sled rides that were popular in 17th century St. Petersburg. (Situated on icy hills, the sleds topped out at 200 feet!). Meanwhile, in the states, a Pennsylvanian mining company constructed a “gravity railroad” in 1827 to move coal. But on slow workdays, they charged thrill-seekers to take it for a spin.
* read a book with a mpg of thriller. Or
* Read a book with a character who is blue collar worker.- the housekeeper in The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa 7/21/19
✔5. Tunnel of Love
Unmarried couples of the late 19th century needed a place to canoodle in public. Love — or, at least hormones — found a way with the boom of so-called carnival "dark rides." As couples wound through the tunnel of love by water or tracks, they were treated to alternating moments of romance (to set the mood) and fright (to encourage an arm over the shoulder).
* read a book with a mpg of romance. Or
* Read a book with two people on the cover.- Little House in the Big Woods by Little House in the Big Woods 7/16/19-

✔6. The Mechanical Bull
Until the 1970s, mechanical bulls were strictly used to train cowboys and rodeo competitors. Early practice bulls were basically large barrels suspended from four ropes (people could jostle the barrel by tugging on the ropes or using a pulley mechanism.) The mechanical version, however, was popularized by a Texas businessman who wanted to make his bars more popular.
* read a book with the word RODEO in the text. Or
* Read a book with all the letters in the word ROPE in the title.- Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth 7/4/19
✔7. The Whip
Patented in 1914, the first whip was made for Coney Island. The attraction—which tamely slings riders around an oval—is rare nowadays, but you can find original models scattered around some old-school parks.
* read a book set between 1900-1950. - The Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck 7/17/19
Or
* Read a book with a title that starts with a letter found in the word WHIP.
✔8. The Wipeout
The giant, revolving ride that moves around, up, and down in a wave-like fashion was originally a German attraction known as the Trabant. American innovators brought a bigger and better version stateside, dubbed it The Wipeout, and the rest is history ... as long as you're 48" tall.
* read a book with a 4 or a 8 in the page count. - The Beggars' Strike by Aminata Sow Fall 7/19/19
Or
* Read a book that was made into a television show.
✔9. Tilt-a-Whirl
The ride that launched a thousand stomachaches sprang from the mind of woodworker and waterslide maker Herbert W. Sellner in 1926. It made its debut at the Minnesota State Fair one year later. The story goes that Sellner experimented with the ride’s design by placing a chair on his kitchen table, making his son sit in it, and then rocking the table. The ride is now manufactured in Texas.
* read a book with a character that works in the medical field. - Two characters are vets in The Vicious Vet by M.C. Beaton 7/15/19
Or
* Read a book that takes place in a mid western state in the US.
✔10. The Scrambler
The Twist. The Gee Whizzer. The Grasscutter. That which we call a Scrambler has many names, because naming it The Ride That Looks Like It's Going To Collide Into Other Cars, AHHHHHH! is too cumbersome. This frightening/fun ride was first produced in the UK in 1959. Since then, each decade has given it a new name and pattern of motion, but the thrill's the same.
* read a book from an author that writes under more than one name.
* Read a book wear something happens that would frighten you (this is up to interpretation).- driving on the mountain roads in Uzbekistan- The Fires by Alan Cheuse 7/18/19
✔11. Log Flume
The modern log flume has been around since the early 20th century, albeit in more sedate versions. Old mill rides used tracks to guide boats through dark tunnels and over a few bunny hills. But as rollercoasters became wilder, those old mill rides had one direction to go: wetter. The splash-intensive modern versions first began surfacing in the early 1960s.
* read a book with a tree on the cover. Or
* read a book set in a forest or the woods.- The Emperor and the Elephants: A Peace Corps Volunteer's Story of Life During the Late 1970s in the Central African Empire by Richard W. Carroll 7/27/19-186p.
✔12. Wave Swinger
It’s easy to imagine someone looking at a carousel and thinking it may be tame. What if we took out the horses, replaced them with swings, and raised the whole thing a few hundred feet? Now we’re talking! Although swing rides were popularized in the 1970s, they’ve been around for decades. Postcards of California’s Idora Park show a wave swinger as early as 1908!
* Read a book with a word in the title that rhymes with swing. Or
* Read a book set in California.- They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy 9/2/19 -122p.
✔13. Shoot the Chute
People have been getting soaked on these flat-bottom boats since 1884. J.P. Newburg invented one that ran along a greased wooden track down the side of a hill in Rock Island, Illinois. It splash-landed in the Rock River and was tugged back to shore by an attendant. It’s been an amusement park staple—and a great way to cool off on summer days—ever since.
* read a book with water on the cover. - The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19-

Or
* Read a book that was published in a summer month June, July, August.
✔14. Helter Skelter
First seen at the UK’s Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1906, the ride is a high tower with a curling slide nestled against it. Customers climb stairs inside the tower before riding down to the bottom.
* read a book set in the UK - An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde 7/12/19-256p.
or
* Read a “tall” book over 400 pages.
✔15. Loop-O-Plane
Invented in 1933, the Loop-O-Plane ride consists of two “plane” compartments on either side of a tower that act as counterweights as they loop around one another. It was originally a flight simulator – the Cuban government even ordered some to train their pilots – but it didn’t really take off until civilians jumped in for a quick, fun ride.
* read a book with an airplane on the cover. Or
* Read a book where the characters go on vacation-Home Is Where You Live: A diary of teaching English abroad for the first time by Elliot Lord 7/25/19- the author and MC go on a few vacations while teaching in Slovakia
