Challenge #279-CCC

July 2019 Scavenger Challenge | Apollo 11
July 1 - 31, 2019

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

July 2019 Scavenger Challenge | Apollo 11
July 1 - 31, 2019

This month is the culmination of many of our challenges over the past several months. We hope you've enjoyed learning about astronauts, space, and all things celestial! Stay tuned for one of the most exciting moments in history - the moon landing!

8/8 Complete

✔1. Apollo 11 was launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 13:32 UTC (aka GMT). The Apollo spacecraft had three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the three astronauts, and the only part that returned to Earth; a service module (SM), which supported the command module with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and a lunar module (LM) that had two stages – a descent stage for landing on the Moon, and an ascent stage to place the astronauts back into lunar orbit.
🚀 Read a book whose author’s first and last initials are CM, SM, or LM (exact match only, no reversals) OR read a book that occurs during the summer months (June, July, August) OR read a book with a 5 in its total page count.- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller 8/27/19-453p.

✔2. Three American men were onboard Apollo 11. The commander was Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was the lunar module pilot; both of these men would walk on the moon’s surface. Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface.
🌚 Read a book that is third in a series (tell us the series' name) or the third book published by an author OR read a book whose title starts with a letter in either EAGLE or COLUMBIA - Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth 7/4/19

ignore a,an,the) OR read a book whose author’s first name is 4 letters.

3. The LM was named Eagle after the motif which was featured prominently on the mission insignia. The CM was named Columbia after Columbiad, the giant cannon that launched a spacecraft (also from Florida) in Jules Verne's 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon. It also referenced Columbia, a historical name of the United States.
🌎 Read a book with an eagle or any bird shown prominently on its cover; post the cover OR read any novel by Jules Verne OR read any book takes place Washington, D.C.- Fiddler on the Roof by Joseph Stein-11/21/19- Fiddler on the Roof by Joseph Stein

✔4. After being launched by the Saturn V's third stage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for three days until they entered lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969 at 20:17 UTC/GMT; they landed on the moon’s “Sea of Tranquility.” Viewers around the world heard, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."
🌘 Read a book in which a character takes a long journey OR read a book in which some type of historic first occurs (tell us what) OR read a book that takes place during the 1960’s.- pub. in 1964 and set as a contemporaneous time period...Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming 7/15/19

✔5. Six hours later on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC/GMT, Neil Armstrong became the first human to step onto the moon’s surface. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later. Armstrong's first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. He described the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Initially the quote was reported as “one small step for man…” Armstrong reported that he had said “for a man” and the quote was revised.
☄️ Read a book published in 2019 OR read a book that starts each chapter with a quote OR read a book that has MAN in its title (does not have to separate, but should be intact). "Man" found in "Woman" in An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde 7/12/19-256p.

✔6. Aldrin and Armstrong planted the American Flag in the moon’s surface in view of a live tv camera. President Richard Nixon was able to speak to them via telephone-radio transmission which Nixon called "the most historic phone call ever made from the White House." Armstrong and Aldrin got busy collecting samples from the moon. Two types of rocks were found in the geological samples: basalt and breccia. Three new minerals were discovered in the rock samples collected by the astronauts: armalcolite, tranquillityite, and pyroxferroite. Armalcolite was named for the three spacemen.
🚀 Read a book in which a real US President is mentioned (please copy the relevant text and give its location) OR read a book with a full moon or any type of flag on its cover (post the cover) OR read a book in which something significant is discovered- in The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19 it is discovered that the MC had a daughter nobody knew about.
tell us what.

✔7. After more than 21 1⁄2 hours on the lunar surface, in addition to the scientific instruments, the astronauts left the following behind: an Apollo 1 mission patch in memory of astronauts Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom, and Edward White, who died when their command module caught fire during a test in January 1967; a memorial bag containing a gold replica of an olive branch as a traditional symbol of peace; and a silicon message disk carrying goodwill statements by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon along with messages from leaders of 73 countries around the world. The disk also carries a listing of the leadership of the US Congress, a listing of members of the four committees of the House and Senate responsible for the NASA legislation, and the names of NASA's past and present top management.
🌍 Read a book in which a main character leaves something significant behind (tell us what) OR read a book in which each title word’s first letter may be found in GOODWILL STATEMENTS (a,an, and the DO count; 3 word minimum) OR read a book in which a serious accident occurs (tell us what). - a MC dies in a car accident in Uzbekistan in The Fires by Alan Cheuse 7/18/19

✔8. The astronauts used Eagle's ascent stage to lift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. They jettisoned Eagle before they performed the maneuvers that propelled them out of lunar orbit on a trajectory back to Earth. They returned to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24 after more than eight days in space. For each of the three astronauts, this trip had been their second time into space and would also be their last.
☄️ Read a book that takes place in any country that borders the Pacific Ocean (tell us where) -USA-California- The Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck 7/17/19OR read a book where several steps/stages must be completed before getting a final product or result (briefly tell us what) OR read a book that is 8th in a series (tell us the series).

Challenge #282-Wanderlust

Tuvalu's Capital: Funafuti
July 1, 2019 - July 31, 2019
0/6
100p. min

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Tuvalu's Capital: Funafuti
July 1, 2019 - July 31, 2019
6/6
100p. min.
Tasks

✔1. Funafuti Conservation Area
The Conservation Area was established in 1996 to protect 33 square kilometers of water and land on the western side of the atoll and lagoon. To reach the area you must obtain the needed permissions ahead of time and secure a rented boat. Even though this isn’t a “luxury” tour it is well worth the trip. Your friendly guide will take you on a 30 minute boat ride in an aluminum dinghy to crystal clear waters abundant with fish life and stunning white beaches on uninhabited islets. You can snorkel or scuba dive to your heart's content in this tropical paradise.

✱ Read a book with the ocean, boat or fish on the cover OR
✱ Read a book from your TBR that has 30 or 33 in its listed position number OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FUNAFUTI CONSERVATION AREA. - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming 7/15/19

✔2. Tuvalu Philatelic Bureau
Stamps from remote Tuvalu are prized by philatelists around the world. Each year, this tiny country produces at least twenty stamps with each issue having a print run in the millions. All those stamps find their way into albums around the world. Since most collectors will never make it to the island, the post office sells the bulk of its stamps online. But for those visiting the island, you can view the Philatelic Bureau’s display at Funafuti's post office. It showcases the wide range and staggering diversity of Tuvalu stamps. They are available for sale and make great souvenirs!

✱ Read a book with a stamp or envelope on the cover OR
✱ Read a book where the MC receives an important piece of mail (tell us what it was) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in TUVALU PHILATELIC BUREAU.- Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth 7/4/19

✔3. Women's Handicraft Center
Although there are no souvenir shops in the country, you can visit the Woman’s Handicraft Center where locally crafted goods are sold. The handicrafts include woven products such as fans, mats and baskets, gorgeous hand-painted bed linens, and woodcarvings. Be aware that the center is only open on the days a flight is due in which is normally three days a week. But you can often find stands outside the terminal selling handmade shell necklaces to departing Tuvaluan’s who love to wear them on their flight as a reminder of home.

✱ Read a book with a handmade (non-food) item on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC that makes a handicraft (tell us what they make) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in WOMEN'S HANDICRAFT CENTER.- An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde 7/12/19-256p.

✔4. Airport Runway Fun
The Tuvaluan’s favorite spot to spend leisure time is the airport runway, which mainly functions as a local recreation area. In the late afternoon, you see groups gathering on the tarmac to play Tuvalu’s national sport Te Ano, which is very much like volleyball. Others ride up and down on motor scooters or simply hang out with friends, while a nearby bar blares out loud music. Additionally, on Friday afternoons which are usually half-day for employees, everyone dresses in flowers and finery and gathers to socialize and have fun. It’s a great place to meet the locals.

✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in RUNWAY OR
✱ Read a book where a recreational sport was played (tell us what sport) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in AIRPORT RUNWAY FUN. - The Beggars' Strike by Aminata Sow Fall 7/19/19

✔5. World War II Wreckage
During WWII, the US military used Funafuti as a base to counter Japanese advances into the Gilbert Islands. You can see the evidence of it across the atoll and islets. There are relics of heavy equipment used in the war, parts of landing craft and B-24 bombers. There are also the broken concrete remains of a seaplane ramp built by the US marines.

✱ Read a book that takes place on an island - Sao Vicente in Cape Verde- The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19
OR
✱ Read a book tagged WAR on its GR homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in WORLD WAR II WRECKAGE.

✔6. Sunset Over Lagoon
Locals say the greatest attraction on Funafuti is the enormous and inviting Funafuti lagoon. It is fourteen kilometers wide and eighteen kilometers long and perfect place
to swim, snorkel or catch a beautiful tropical sunset.

✱ Read a book with a sunset on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that has a double OO in it's title - Little House in the Big Woods by Little House in the Big Woods 7/16/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in SUNSET OVER LAGOON.

Global Camping Adventure
July 1, 2019 - September 30, 2019
15/15

1. USA: Great Smoky Mountains National Park
When it comes to National Parks for camping, you have to start in the US. Americans love to camp and there are parks in every state that encourage our devotion to it. The most visited park is Great Smoky Mountains NP. It encompasses over 800 sq miles of mountainous land and preserves some of the world’s most stunning deciduous forests. It’s opened year round and is the perfect backdrop for your dream campsite.
✔⛺ Read a book with a forest or group of trees on the cover or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in CAMPSITE.- The Fires by Alan Cheuse 7/18/19

The park is world renowned for its biological diversity and animal life with over 17,000 species being documented and has been designated an International Biosphere Reserve by the UN. It is also rich in Southern Appalachian history that is apparent when you encounter the old churches, cabins, farmhouses and barns of the mountain people who have settled there since the late 1700s. Structures and official sites have all been marked, creating an outdoor historic gallery.
✔⛺ Read a book a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in APPALACHIAN. Laura in Little House in the Big Woods by Little House in the Big Woods 7/16/19

The park maintains 10 developed campgrounds with Capes Cove being one of the most popular. The broad valley is blanketed in wildflowers in spring, frequented by deer, and surrounded by mountain peaks. It offers easy access to fishing, horseback riding and hiking trails, like the beloved 5-mile round trip hike to Abrams Falls. You can also rent a bike or join in one of their interpretive programs held at the onsite amphitheater. This park has it all which explains why it receives nine million visitors every year.
✔⛺ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS (THREE Word Minimum).- I Am There: Armenia by Olivia Puccini 7/23/19
2. NEW ZEALAND: Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
Kiwis also love to camp and one of their fav places to get back to nature is Aoraki Mount Cook NP. Located on the South Island, it is home to the highest mountains and the longest glaciers and the views from the campgrounds are simply staggering. There is only one way in and out of the park and it happens to be the most scenic road in the country! So pack up your gear and head to this "out of this world" outdoor playground.
✔⛺ Read a book with a scenic view on the cover or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in SOUTH ISLAND.-

The Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck 7/17/19- The Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck

White Horse Hill Campground is the place to camp and it is close to Mount Cook Village for easy access to supplies. The campground sits on a valley floor split by massive mountain ridges and glacier-covered Mount Sefton looms large above the campsites. It has easy access to several of the most popular hiking trails which take you to iceberg filled lakes you can kayak on and massive glaciers you can actually walk inside of.
✔⛺ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in GLACIER. - Robert Chiltern in An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde 7/12/19-256p.
Aoraki Mount Cook NP is part of the International Dark Sky Reserve, so there is no better place to see the night sky with clarity. Out here in the mountainous wilderness it is almost completely free of light pollution. For those who want to learn more about what they can see there are astronomy guides to help at The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Center, offering the use of telescopes and astronomy binoculars. The guides can also take you on a drive to a perfect stargazing site.
✔⛺ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in AORAKI MOUNT COOK NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum). - The Return of Mr. Campion: Uncollected Stories by Margery Allingham 7/19/19-165p.

3. MONGOLIA: Gorkhi-Terelj National Park
Mongolia's nomadic people have been camping for thousands of years. We head to the beautiful Gorkhi-Terelj NP to get a small glimpse into their life. The park is impressive with its beautiful meadows, massive rock formations and wooded mountains. The best camping option is in a traditional Mongolian ger or yurt. There are dozens of camps hosted by local families that provide you with everything you need from freshly cooked food to local music in the evenings.
✔⛺ Read a book with a large rock on the cover or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in MONGOLIAN GER.- The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19

The symbol of the NP is an 80 ft tall granite formation called Turtle Rock for its obvious resemblance to its namesake. It’s a definite must-see! A few kilometers further is the Ariyabal Meditation Temple, a little Buddhist temple tucked into a rocky mountainside that looks out over the entire park. Getting there is the real adventure. First you cross a long, swinging suspension bridge called the “Bridge to Heaven”, and then you climb up 108 impossibly steep steps to the temple itself. The serene tranquility and incredible views are well worth the climb.

✔⛺ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in TEMPLE. - Phillip Roth is the MC in his own book- Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth 7/7/19
Because of its vast terrain it’s hard to see the whole park on foot. Most of the camps have their own herd of horses to take you out into the steppes. If you are interested in
a more remote experience you can take an overnight riding tour into the remote high country. Other activities available are rock climbing, bird watching, archery lessons or even visiting with a nomadic family. Or you can just relax and enjoy the gorgeous scenery and nature surrounding you.
✔⛺ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GORKHI-TERELJ NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum). - The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa 7/21/19

4. PORTUGAL: Peneda-Gerês National Park
Portugal’s only national park is a combination of natural wonders and local lifestyles. Tucked into the northern corner against the Spanish border, this park has rugged mountain ranges, oak forests, rivers and green valleys that shelter hundreds of hamlets and small villages each retaining many of their traditions and agricultural practices from the past. Camping Parque Cerdeira is a great campground to use as home base while exploring all the park has to offer.
✔⛺ Read a book with a village scene on the cover or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in CAMPGROUND.-
The Emperor and the Elephants: A Peace Corps Volunteer's Story of Life During the Late 1970s in the Central African Empire by Richard W. Carroll 7/27/19-186p.

Dozens of old shepherd trails provide easy hiking access to the park. The Homem River Valley offers a beautiful hike through rare remnants of the ancient Albergaria forest, allowing you to walk an old Roman road while enjoying waterfalls and gazing on medieval castles high above on the rocky peaks. Wander through the abandoned Cistercian monastery marveling how the structures built from local rock seem to grow organically from the soil. Explore the rustic villages and see the unusual old granite grain stores or espigueiros.
✔⛺ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in ALBERGARIA. - Stranded in the Seychelles by Bev Spicer 7/31/19-188p.- the author is the MC
The park is also a great place to see a diverse collection of wildlife. Europe’s very few wolves still prowl the park, as do foxes, wild boars, ibex, and deer. But the wild Garrano ponies are the park’s most charming inhabitants. Native to the region since the Celtic era, their numbers have greatly decreased so the government has been slowly working to rebuild the herds. You will see them running wild and also being used in the villages to help with heavy chores.
✔⛺ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in PENEDA-GERÊS NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum). - Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener by M.C. Beaton 9/23/19

✔5. GERMANY: Müritz National Park
Just two hours outside of Berlin, Müritz NP is an enchanting land begging to be explored. Its landscape includes ancient beech forests, mysterious marshes and huge expanses of water – including more than 130 lakes. Thousands of birds make their homes here, including the endangered white tailed eagle. Müritzeum, in the town of Waren is a great introduction to the park. It has awesome science-based, interactive exhibitions about the flora and fauna of the region. Its centerpiece is the large aquarium filled wit native freshwater fish.
⛺ Read a book with a cover that is mostly blue and/or green - The Vicious Vet by M.C. Beaton 7/15/19- The Vicious Vet (Agatha Raisin, #2) by M.C. Beaton
or read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in WHITE TAILED EAGLE.

There are some great campground choices giving you the option to be right on one of the lakes or in a quiet campsite in the woods. You can’t leave Müritz without getting on or in the water and there are loads of options for exploring the lake. You can rent canoes, charter a larger boat or take one of the pleasure boat tours run by the park. There are even houseboats you can rent if that is your preferred method of camping.
✔⛺ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter found in CANOE. -Elliot Lord in Home Is Where You Live: A diary of teaching English abroad for the first time by Elliot Lord 7/25/19
The park is a "dream come true" for hikers and bikers. There are extensive trails that meander through the forests, groves and lake shores, revealing amazing surprises at every turn. There are even viewing towers to help you get a birds-eye view of the region. One of the largest towers is the "Käflingsbergturm" with a height of 55m or 190 ft. A fun way to explore the park is to take a GPS Adventure Tour. There are 6 different tours, which guide you to all the treasures of nature and points of interest.
✔⛺ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MÜRITZ NATIONAL PARK (THREE Word Minimum)-Loser Takes All by Graham Greene 7/28/19-128p.

World Landmarks - The Leaning Tower of Pisa

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

World Landmarks - The Leaning Tower of Pisa
July 1, 2019 - August 31, 2019
7/7

Tasks

✔1. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a famous landmark in Italy located in the Tuscan city of Pisa. It is actually the campanile or bell tower for the cathedral it stands next to and part of the Campo dei Miracoli or "Square of Miracles" that includes, the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and cemetery. The entire Square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
*Read a book with a tower -tower seen in background- The Bellarosa Connection by Saul Bellow 8/1/19
The Bellarosa Connection by Saul Bellow or square object on the cover or read a book that takes place in Italy.

✔2. It took two centuries to build the tower. Construction started in 1173 and was not completed until 1372. Construction stopped and restarted twice due to the outbreak of war. Several different groups of engineers and architectures have worked on the tower but the original architect who created the plans has never been verified.
*Read a book in which war is a prominent theme - The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells-192p.-8/13/19
or read a book that was written by more than one author.

✔3. The tower is world famous for its prominent tilt which began as early as 1178, when construction of the second tier began and only grew worse as construction continued. The tower's foundation was built on soft subsoil which has difficulty supporting the tower's weight, creating its famous lean. To try and compensate for the tilt the engineers in 1272 built the upper floors with one side taller than the other giving the tower a slight curve.
*Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in TILT - The Last Will & Testament of Senhor da Silva Araújo by Germano Almeida 7/10/19
or read a book you thought was unusually heavy (tell us why).

✔4. The tower is eight stories high and made mostly of white marble which gives it is striking white color. The top floor is the bell chamber which can be reached by climbing 294 steps. There you will find seven bells, one sitting in each of the seven arches, the largest one weighing in at nearly 8,000 pounds. Each of the seven bells represent a note of the musical major scale.
*Read a book with a white cover - An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde 7/12/19-256p.- An Ideal Husband; A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde
or a series book #7 or #8.

✔5. In 1990, when the Tower reached the inclination of 5°, engineers warned that its center of gravity was coming dangerously close to the outer edge of the base and the tower was in serious danger of falling. A massive rescue operation was launched and the tower was closed for "straightening works". It took 30 million EUR and an entire decade to correct the Tower’s lean to an acceptable inclination of 3.97°. The tower was reopened to the public in 2001.
*Read a book published between 1990 and 2001 or read a book that featured a major reconstruction project (tell us what it was). -A jalopy is transformed into a magical car in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming 7/15/19

✔6. There are actually several other towers in Pisa that also lean: the bell towers at both St. Michele dei Scalzi and St. Nicola. The cathedral and baptistery in the square are also slowly sinking. It is no surprise to learn that the city of Pisa got its name in 600 BC from a Greek word meaning "marshy land".
*Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in PISA- Philip Roth is the MC in his own book- Operation Shylock: A Confession by Philip Roth 7/7/19

or read a book by an author that has the letters ST (intact) found in their name.

✔7. The Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, a professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa, is said to have dropped two spheres of different masses from the tower to demonstrate that their speed of descent was independent of their mass. According to the story, he discovered that both objects fell with the same acceleration, disproving Aristotle's theory of gravity which states that objects fall at speed proportional to their mass. Though there is no evidence that this actually occurred and many call it a legend or wives tale.
*Read a book with a character that is a scientist or professor - The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yōko Ogawa 7/21/19
or read a book tagged NON-FICTION on its GR Homepage.

TOP TEN PYRAMID - GENRES/SUB-GENRES
Date: 08/01/19 - 07/31/20

t's time for a new pyramid challenge! This time we will be working with genres and sub-genres.

Choose ten genres and/or sub-genres to work with. Then for each one, you will list them in order of priority for your pyramid.

To complete the challenge, you will read one to ten books for each genre/sub-genre you have listed. The number of books you read for each one will depend on the priority you have set. For example, for Genre #1, you will read one book for that genre. For Genre #2, you will read two books for that genre. And so on. Please Note: In order for your book to count for this challenge, the genre/sub-genre must be shown on the book's main page.

Your list can be as simple or complex as you like. For example, you could use Fiction as one genre; however, you could also break it down further by also using Historical Fiction, Womens Fiction, Speculative Fiction, Literary Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Science Fiction, Adult Fiction, Christian Fiction, etc.

The genre and sub-genres you choose are totally up to you, and the number of books (1 through 10) you assign to each is also your choice.

August 2019 Scavenger Challenge | Lefties
Duration: August 1 - 31, 2019

Let's hear it for the Southpaws!! Read on to learn some interesting facts, theories, and trivia for this minority.

150p. min

7/7 Complete

√1. International Left-Handers Day is held annually every August 13th. It was founded by the Left-Handers Club in 1992, with the club itself having been founded in 1990.
🖐 Read a book that was originally published in the 1990’s; tell us when - Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener by M.C. Beaton 9/23/19-pub. 1994
OR read a book that is 13th in a series; tell us the series name OR read a book whose author’s middle initial may be found in CLUB (the middle initial must be listed in GoodReads).

√2. Left-handedness is far less common than right-handedness. Studies suggest that 10-15% of the world population is left-handed. Handedness does not appear to be a directly inherited trait such as eye or hair color but is associated with certain DNA sequences.
🤚 Read a book with “LEFT” or “RIGHT” in its title (does not have to stand alone) OR read a book between #10 - #15 on your TBR, sorted anyway you choose OR read a book in which a character inherits an obvious trait or illness from one of their ancestors (the book should make a point of stating “x” was inherited from "y"). In There There by Tommy Orange 10/10/19- one of the MCs inherits facial deformities caused by his Mother's alcoholism.

√3. There have been eight presidents who have been lefties, including James A. Garfield, Herbert Hoover, Harry S Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.
🖐 Read a book with an “8” in its total page count; tell us how many pages - The Black Joke by Farley Mowat-218p.-8/13/19

OR read a biography about any US President OR read a book by an author who has the same initials as any of the eight left-handed presidents (you may ignore middle initials, but first / last initials must be an exact match).

√4. Ancient Romans are to thank for the placement of wedding bands on the left hand. They believed that a "lover's vein" connected the fourth finger on the left hand to the heart.
🤚 Read a book in which a wedding occurs OR read a book marked romance OR read a book that takes place during the Roman Empire.-
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare-283p.- 8/30/19

√5. The term "southpaw" can be traced back to the 1880s when Chicago Daily Newssports reporter Finley Peter Dunne used the term while covering the then-named Chicago White Stockings games. Dunne was known for giving colorful play-by-play and when a left-handed pitcher came on the field, he described him as a "southpaw." Since the ballpark faced east and west, home plate was west and a left-hander would pitch from the south with his "paw."
🖐 Read a book featuring a reporter of any kind- Abe Fields in The Roots of Heaven by Romain Gary 9/6/19
OR read a book in which characters attend a baseball game OR read a book that takes place in Chicago.

√6. The concept that lefties are more creative has been debunked. But newer studies show some advantages for left-handers. One of which is that left-handers perform tasks that involve the use of their hands better than right-handed people. Lefties also learn to be more ambidextrous than righties, often because they have to in order to function in a predominantly right-handed world.
🤚 Read a book in which the main character's hands are absolutely essential to make a living (i.e. a pianist, a potter) OR read a book in which the first letter of each title word may be found in AMBIDEXTROUS (a, an, the DO count; 3 word minimum) OR read a book in which a character is specifically described as being left-handed; tell us who.- MC, Henry Perowne is a neurosurgeon in Saturday by Ian McEwan 9/11/19

√7. Studies found that left-handed people have a lower prevalence of arthritis and ulcers. Researchers believe it’s related to the underlying DNA that creates left-handedness. Another bonus for lefties in the medical arena is that they would recover faster if they were to suffer from a stroke or other brain-related injury. The cognitive functions are spread out in the brains of lefties, which means that in theory, when they have a stroke (which is typically concentrated to a small area of the brain), less of their cognitive functioning will be affected.
🖐 Read a book in which a character is suffering from any type of medical ailment; tell us what it is OR read a book featuring a medical professional OR read a book that requires quite a bit of cognitive functioning (i.e. heavy subject matter, difficult text).- heavy subject matter with rapes and a forced sex change operation in The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter -8/11/19- 187p.

Challenge #300-Wanderlust
Chile's Capital: Santiago
August 1, 2019 - August 31, 2019

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Chile's Capital: Santiago
August 1, 2019 - August 31, 2019
6/6

Tasks

*****1. Plaza de Armas
The best place to begin your exploration of Santiago is the Plaza de Armas. Like most major cities in South America, the “Square of Weapons” was designed to be the city center and main plaza. Fortunately, the gallows have been replaced with fountains and palm trees and is now a popular place to relax and socialize during the day. Walking around the plaza you might see people in a heated game of chess, busting a move with some group dancing, or enjoying an impromptu street show. People watching here is definitely one of the most entertaining things to do in Santiago!

✱ Read a book with a palm tree or a group of people on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that is in "the center" or middle of a series (tell us the series #) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PLAZA DE ARMAS. - Cruel Shoes by Steve Martin 9/8/19

*****2. Metropolitan Cathedral
Escape the hustle and bustle of the plaza by slipping into the beautiful Metropolitan Cathedral found on the northwest corner of the plaza. This historical treasure is the main house of worship and Archdiocese for Chile’s Catholic Church. Its history began in the mid-1500's and has been greatly impacted by the country's history of earthquakes, destroying it in 1647 and again ten years later. Another earthquake in 1730 prompted them to start a total reconstruction project that took decades. The neoclassical cathedral was completed in 1800 and is quite impressive with its ornate frescos on the ceiling and its beautiful gilded columns.

✱ Read a book with a house of worship or religious symbol on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a plot that spans decades OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL. - The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter -8/11/19- 187p.

*****3. Cerra Santa Lucia
This historical hill is the perfect place to see the city’s breathtaking backdrop of the snow-capped Andes. The remnant of a 15 million year old volcano, it was used as a lookout point when the conquistadors were conquering Chile and in 1820, Fort Hidalgo was built as a defensive point. Today it houses a beautiful park that commemorates its significance in the city’s history. The park is essentially vertical and you’ll wind your way up to the top by following the many staircases and web of trails. On each level there is a place to pause, relax, enjoy the beautiful architecture, fountains, statues and of course, the incredible view.

✱ Read a book with staircase or fountain on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in HIDALGO OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CERRA SANTA LUCIA. - They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera 9/7/19

*****4. Bario Bellavista
Bellavista is Santiago’s bohemian quarter and a fun place to hang out day or night. Stroll around the area taking in the street art, perusing the markets, and stopping to relax in one of the many cafes. Or take the Bellavista Funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill to see the statue of La Virgen and the memorial for Pope John Paul II. Once night falls, Bellavista really comes to life as locals and tourists flock to the countless restaurants, bars, and clubs to bask in the local flavors and music.

✱ Read a book with a colorful color OR
✱ Read a book where the characters go out for a "night on the town" OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in BARIO BELLAVISTA. - The Bellarosa Connection by Saul Bellow 8/1/19

*****5. La Moneda Palace
This ornate neoclassical building was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca in
the late 18th century and is deemed by many as the most harmonious civilian building
of the Colonial America. Built to originally house the official mint it is now Chile's presidential offices and seat of its government. The changing of the guard ceremony which happens every other day is quite impressive. And UNDER the palace is one of Santiago's newer cultural spaces: Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda. A glass roof floods the vault-like central atrium with natural light and ramps wind down to a state run "art-house" movie theater and two large exhibition spaces that have rotating art and cultural exhibits throughout the year.

✱ Read a book that takes place in the 18th century OR
✱ Read a book with a plot that involves the government in some way- the governments of Britain and Mauritius connive to forcibly relocate the residents of the Chagos Islands in A Chagos Story by Vinod T. Fullee-8/23/19-168p.
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in LA MONEDA PALACE.

*****6. Museum Hopping
Santiago abounds with wonderful museums including its three “National” museums. The National History Museum exhibits everyday life objects from Chilean culture. The Museum of Natural History features whale skeletons, fossils and artifacts from ancient civilizations and the National Fine Arts Museum is the perfect place to see Chilean and South American art. Another must-see is the moving Museum of Memory and Human Rights that commemorates the victims of human rights violations and marked the bicentennial of Chile’s independence. Two other fun options are The Museo de la Moda, a slick fashion museum with a vast collection of Western clothing and the Museo Interactivo Mirador which is a great hands-on experience perfect for the kid in you.

✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in MUSEUM OR
✱ Read a book that mentions a museum (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MUSEUM HOPPING.-They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy 9/2/19 -122p.
