9/1/19-9/30/19- 100 p. min.
Points on a Dart Board
1-20
double points in outer ring
triple points in inner ring
50 points for bullseye
Spin the wheel to see where your dart lands.
https://wheeldecide.com/index.php?c1=...
Set up a tracking post to track your points earned for each book, and your running total. Start at 301 and work down to zero (if you can).
Get single points if you match one item for that number. Get double points if you match two items for that number. Get triple points if you match three items for that number. So, for example, if you spin a 4 and read a book that is #4 in the series, has a 4 in the page count, and has a 4 in the publication date, you earn 12 points (4x3). If your book only matches #4 in series, you earn 4 points.
If you spin a bullseye, read a book of 500+ pages to get 50 points.

Tasks
*****1. The Casbah
The Casbah of Algiers is the historical heart of the city and an outstanding example
of a traditional settlement representing a profoundly Mediterranean Muslim culture. Spreading up a hillside above the port to the citadel, its maze of narrow winding streets and densely packed white-washed houses is a fascinating place to explore, though it’s recommended you hire a guide to hear the history and help direct you to the key sites.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, the Casbah dates back several centuries and shows it age. Many buildings are is disrepair though several of the prominent mosques and mansions from the Ottoman period are now undergoing restoration. Be sure to stop at The Bardo, an Ottoman-era palace of courtyards, fountains and sub-tropical gardens that are absolutely beautiful.

Located on the waterfront, this compound of buildings is one of the city's grandest mansions and successful restoration projects. Originally built in the late 18th century by the ruler Dar Hasan Pacha, this impressive palace served as one of his homes, was then occupied by the French military and even hosted the Emperor Napoleon and Empress Eugénie stayed during their 1860 tour. Later it served as the American consulate, and then a school and library. Today it houses a collection of illuminated manuscripts and contemporary calligraphy by artists from across North Africa and the Middle East. Both the collections and the Ottoman architecture are simply stunning.

This impressive landmark rises above the city and is a symbol of freedom to its inhabitants. Algeria gained its independence from France in 1962, but the 8 year war resulted in over a million dead. The Martyrs' Memorial was opened on the country’s 20th anniversary in 1982 to honor those casualties. Standing 302 feet tall and comprised of three concrete palm leaves flanked by a single soldier, the monument's centerpiece is an eternal flame commemorating the lives lost in the nationwide struggle. The site also houses a national museum including artifacts from the war. The memorial serves as a somber but beautiful reminder that their freedom came at a great cost.
✱ Read a book with a flame or palm leaves on the cover OR
✱ Read a series book #8 or a book with the number 8 in the total page count OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MARTYRS MEMORIAL. - Saturday by Ian McEwan 9/11/19

Algeria is a Muslim country, but their most stunning feat of architecture is this Catholic basilica known as The White Lady. Located on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers, this neo-byzantine house of worship welcomes thousands of Christian, Muslim and Jewish pilgrims each year and stands as a symbol of a successful religious coexistence, inspiring reverence and contemplation. Construction was completed in 1872 and its interior was richly decorated with paintings, arches, columns, mosaics and beautiful stained glass windows. A 3-year reconstruction project, following a damaging earthquake in 2003 has restored The Lady to her former glory.
✱ Read a book with a white cover OR
✱ Read a book in which religion is important to the plot OR

Walk through the heart of the city along La Rue Didouche Mourad, the main commercial artery. This French-designed tree-lined boulevard with Haussmann-style architecture teems with life. Dotted with patisseries, bookshops, bakeries, and shops, this popular and bustling tourist attraction also houses a number of heritage historic sites like Abdelkader Square which is dedicated to the military leader who led a struggle against the French. The jewel of the Rue is the famous Grand Post Office. It is a site to see with its stunning three-arched entrance, marble staircase, Moorish dome and the most finely decorated postal box you will ever see.

A curious spot for all lovers of great literature is the cave that the great writer Miguel Cervantes, author of Don Quixote de la Mancha, took refuge in while attempting to escape from pirates holding him captive in the city. The author spent nearly two months hiding here in 1577. Since the end of the 19th century, it has become a shrine and is recognized as such by both the Algerian and Spanish governments. Visitors come every day to imagine what those moments in the life of the genius were like. Other than the actual cave, you will find a column with a marble bust of Cervantes which includes two commemorative plaques about the writer and this strange episode of his life.

Landmarks of the World - The Great Wall of China
September 1, 2019 - October 31, 2019
7/7
Tasks
*****1. The Chinese Name of 'The Wall' literally means ‘The Long Wall of 10,000 Miles'. With a total length of 13,170 miles, equal to half the length of the Equator, the Great Wall of China is the longest man-made structure in the world and the biggest feat of human engineering to date. Traversing the northern part of the country, it spans across 15 regions of China through a stunning array of scenery of steep mountains, rugged countryside, stretching all the way to the sea.
*Read a long book (over 400+ pages) or read a book with a standing wall on the cover. - The Roots of Heaven by Romain Gary 434p. 9/6/19
*****2. The GW is 2,700 years old and took over 2,000 years to build. The fortifications built by the Chu State in 770 BC have been proven to be the actual beginnings of the wall. Emperor Qin Shi Huang from 210 BC was responsible for linking the separate sections built by Chu. Over a thousand years later, major rebuilding of the wall took place during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century, adding 5,000 miles and fortifying the older construction with stone and brick. Previous construction was mostly done with wood, rocks and compacted earth held together with glutinous rice flour. That is why the bulk of the wall still standing today are the portions built by the Ming Dynasty.
*Read a book that takes place before the year 1400 AD or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in MING. - The Maid's Tragedy by Francis Beaumont 9/23/19
*****3. It is actually much more than a wall! Built as a defensive line, it was a comprehensive fortification, consisting of overlapping walls, trenches for blocking enemies, beacon towers for signals and communication, fortresses for head-on battles, and barracks to accommodate soldiers. Sadly it was not always successful as a barrier to the northern regions. Several strong nomadic tribes throughout history managed passage across the barrier defeating the current dynasty.
*Read a book in which a battle takes place or read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR home page. - Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura 10/9/19
*****4. The Wall is sadly called the Longest Cemetery in the World. Throughout its 2,000 years of construction, more than a million laborers were used, including civilians, soldiers, and even convicts. The toilsome work took over 400,000 lives and many of them were actually buried beneath it. There is even a well-known legend in China about a woman named Meng Jiangnu who lost her husband to the wall and her weeping caused that portion of the wall to collapse exposing her husband’s bones.
*Read a book in which two or more characters die or read a book with a MC that is a widow. - Both of the MCs die in They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera 9/7/19
*****5. The myth that the GW can be seen from the moon with naked eyes is untrue. The myth dates back to the 19th century before human beings were able to travel in space.
It has been debunked many times, but is still ingrained in popular culture even though
it has never been confirmed by an astronaut that has walked on the moon. Though visibility from low Earth orbit is still a controversial question. Some astronauts claimed that they have seen it with the unaided eye, but other astronauts disputed these claims. NASA claims that it is barely visible but only under nearly perfect conditions.
*Read a book with the moon on its cover or read a book that addresses a controversial topic (tell us what). Animal Rights- Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals by Hal Herzog 9/19/19
*****6. During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), miles of the Wall was destroyed to make way for infrastructure construction and bricks from the wall were used to build houses, farms and reservoirs. In later years, bricks from the wall were pillaged and sold. In 1987, the Great Wall was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site and according to their statistics nearly one third of the wall has been destroyed with more sections expected to disappear within the next 20 years due to deterioration, desertification and change in human land use.
*Read a book published between 1966 and 1987 - pub. 1977- Cruel Shoes by Steve Martin 9/8/19
or read a book that takes place in China.
*****7. The GW attracts 50 million visitors every year. Most of these crowds converge on
the 40-mile section outside of Beijing. With its well-preserved walls, stunning scenery and consummate facilities, it's very impressive and enjoys the highest international reputation. However, human vandalism to this section has become a major threat. Unlike other cultural relics, the GW cannot be kept in a museum which presents great difficulty in providing protection. Even with China enacting a Regulation for Protection in 2006, the wall remains one of the world's 100 most endangered sites.
*Read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in GREAT WALL OF CHINA.-There There by Tommy Orange 10/10/19

E-I-E-I-O SPELL CHALLENGE
Date: 09/02/00 - 00/00/00
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
E-I-E-I-O SPELL CHALLENGE
Date: 09/02/00 - 10/17/23
This is the "E-I-E-I-O" spell out challenge. Here is how it works:
From the Old McDonald song, we're going to spell out all of the animals AND their sounds. All books read for this challenge will need to have the corresponding vowel as the first letter using either the book title, the author's first or last name, the first letter of a series title, or the first letter of a main character's first or last name. For the consonant letters, in addition to the specific letter required, you will also need to have a vowel as one of the factors. For example: If your consonant is the letter C, you will need a vowel to represent either the book title, the author's first or last name, the series title, or a main character's first or last name.
It might look something like this:
C = Colleen Hoover|It Ends with Us (title starts with the vowel "I")
O = On My Way to You|Olivia Grace (author's first name begins with the vowel "O")
W = Wendy Owens|Stubborn Love (the author's last name begins with the vowel "O")
51/51
Cow/Moo
C- The Moon and the Bonfire by Cesare Pavese 9/25/19 (Vowel=A in MC's name- Anguila)
