A CAPITAL IDEA
Duration: November 1, 2018-???
Thanks to Charlene for the original idea for this challenge.
For this challenge, you will use any 3 consecutive letters in the capital name and read a book with those exact 3 consecutive letters in the book title or author's name. The letters you choose from the capital name may flow between 2 words in the book title or author's name. And the letters you choose in one word in the book title or author's name may flow between 2 words in the capital name. You may use A, An, The in this challenge.
Please indicate after each country capital name which 3 letters you used. This will make it considerably easier for the moderator and other readers to find the connection between capital and book. This is a requirement of the challenge or your name will be excluded from the list of the completed challengers if this is not done.
Examples: for TIRANA, you could read Grave Ransom by Kalayna Price (RAN in both); for BUENOS AIRES, you could read The Cat Who Said Cheese by Lilian Jackson Braun (SAI in both), for ROME you could read Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (OME in capital and author's name).
CHALLENGE RULES:
See this thread for more detailed rules for all CCC challenges.
♦ If you want to participate in this challenge, please sign up by posting a challenge template. This gives us a post to link you to, which you can use to update your books as the challenge progresses.
♦ Unless otherwise noted, books must be at least 150 pages long. (See the link above for rules regarding graphic novels.) Books may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged :) Re-reads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book. You must read at least half of the book AFTER the challenge begins in order to count it for this challenge.
♦ For each book you read, please post a link to the title, and indicate the author and the date you finished reading it.
* If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title or author, see the instructions here: Add a link to book title or author
♦ If you want the challenge moderator to verify your books as you post updates, please copy/paste your update into a new message . If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your formatting, etc. too. We don’t have time to scroll back through the entire thread looking for "message #15," or to follow links back to an original post.
♦ If you use books that are in a language other than English, please translate those titles into English for the purposes of this challenge, unless you plan to use that language for the entire challenge.
♦ When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message. If you do this while you still have the Edit window open, it will copy all of your links and formatting. If you don’t repost your list, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge.

The Cover Item Scavenger Hunt
Beginning 11/1/19- no deadline
**This challenge has no deadline!**
This challenge is one I created and fondly borrowed from a book group I lead called The Word Nerds. Over there, it's fantasy/science fiction books only (and many of the items will reflect that), but here it is open to all genres. So you get to have fun being creative. :)
THE IDEA:
Find AND READ a book with an item on the cover that matches one of those listed. You must find a book cover that matches EVERY ITEM. Only one item on the cover may be used, even if more than one eligible item appears. I will look through your selections for each item and let you know if any of them don't fit and need to be changed.
THE RULES:
• If you choose to participate, please make a post keeping track of your progress, and edit that post whenever your progress updates. Don't make a new post with every update! Links to participants' posts will be provided underneath this one to make it simpler to find yours to update.
• For each item, link the book cover of the book you chose, along with author and the date finished. THE COVER ITSELF IS REQUIRED FOR THIS CHALLENGE. [see 'add book/author' above the comment box to do this]
• The item you choose must be able to be seen and identified in the Goodreads book thumbnail. It doesn't have to take up most of the cover, but I have to be able to see what it is without going to the book's page.
• NEW: Please do not backdate when you join this challenge. Only books you have read since making your post here may be included. This is because there is no deadline, and therefore there is no rush to complete the list. There is no reason to do this that doesn't ruin the point of of it being a challenge. Several people have attempted to do this when they joined, which tells me it was not as common sense as I assumed it was, so it is now an official rule. No backdating.
• A minimum of 150 pages per book is required. Books may only be used once, and only one item on a cover may be chosen; no repeats allowed.
• When you complete the challenge, feel free to make a new post saying so, so I may recognize you properly. :)

Panama's Capital - Panama City
November 1, 2019 - November 30, 2019
3/6
Tasks
*****1. Panama Canal
This is undoubtedly the most visited place in Panama City. The Canal is a 48 mile long artificial waterway that connects the Atlantic Pacific Oceans. Following its recent expansion, the Canal has doubled its capacity and 14,000 ships are now transitioning through it every year. The best place to observe this architectural feat is at the Miraflores Locks. The Visitor Center there has a viewing deck and a great interactive museum. Be sure to stop and take a photo of the beautiful Bridge of the Americas at the entrance of the canal.
✱ Read a book with a ship on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that partially takes place on a ship or boat - part of the author's travels in Borneo occur in boats- Stranger in the Forest: On Foot Across Borneo by Eric Hansen-11/4/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PANAMA CANAL.
*****2. Panamá La Vieja
Our next two places are together named an UNESCO heritage site. Panamá La Vieja was the original location of the city. Built by conquistadors in 1519, it was the first European settlement on the Pacific Coast and soon became one of the most important trade centers for gold and silver on the continent. It was destroyed by fire during a pirate attack in 1671 and all that remains are the archaeological ruins of the city. Explore the 57 acres of crumbling buildings with interpretive signs in both English and Spanish, climb to the top of the tower for excellent views of the area and visit the museum with its impressive displays and excellent handicraft market.
✱ Read the first book of a series - Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood 12/4/19
OR
✱ Read a book that mentions pirates (please share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PANAMA LA VIEJA.
*****3. Casco Viejo
Casco Viejo historic district embodies the essence of its people and is where they rebuilt after the pirate attack in the 17th century. Once this old waterfront area was declared a World Heritage site it grew to become one of the fastest and greatest urban revitalization projects on the continent. The colonial buildings in this eclectic and energetic area have been restored into boutique hotels, apartments, trendy coffeehouses, bars, and restaurants. Strolling through the narrow streets, taking in the atmosphere is a great way to spend the day. And the area is the new epicenter of the city’s nightlife so be sure to stick around after dark. Panamanians do enjoy a good party!
✱ Read a book with a street scene on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC that loves to party OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CASCO VIEJO. - The Thirteen Problems by Agatha Christie 12/3/19
*****4. Folkoric Show
No trip to Panama would be complete without seeing a Panamanian Folkloric Show,
a mixture of music and dancing showcasing their Caribbean and Spanish Colonial heritage. You’ll be mesmerized by the ladies in their white fluffy “Pollera” dresses and flowers. It is a great primer on the history, music, dance, and customs of the country and a great way to promote cultural pride in the communities that hold them. And to top it off you’ll be served a delicious traditional dinner featuring Latin American specialties.
✱ Read a book with a woman in a dress on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in a Latin American or Caribbean country OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FOLKLORIC SHOW. - The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket 11/8/19
*****5. Biomuseo
Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, you must visit this colorful museum. Just the architecture is worth the visit. But do go inside to see its eight fascinating exhibits that tell the story of how the isthmus of Panama rose from
the sea, uniting two continents, separating a vast ocean in two, and changing the planet's biodiversity forever. The exhibits are well done with explanations in both English and Spanish, There are also several bilingual guides available to answer
any of your questions. You will leave there with a better understanding of the impact global warming may have on our planet in the future.
✱ Read a book with a cover that is prominently red, blue and or yellow OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in ISTHMUS (ignor An,An or The) OR

Panama City is the only metropolis to have a jungle and protected tropical forest within its city center. It also protects all kinds of critters, including 254 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 36 species of reptiles, and 14 species of amphibians. It is perfect for nature lovers and offers several walking trails allowing you to enjoy the great diversity of flora and fauna. Don’t be surprised to see monkeys, sloths and a multitude of butterflies There are also look out points for wonderful views of the city center.

Landmarks of the World - Big Ben
11/01/19 - 12/31/19
8/8
*****1. If you've ever been to or seen pictures of London, there's a good chance you've seen this British cultural icon. Located at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, this famous clock tower is known to the world as Big Ben but the name actually belongs to the largest of the clock’s five bell inside. The structure itself was originally named “The Clock Tower and was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012, in honor of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Read a book that takes place in London - The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard-11/26/19
or a book by an author or MC with the first name ELIZABETH.
*****2. The tower was designed by architect Charles Barry and built in a Gothic Revival style. It stands 315 feet tall and the climb from ground level to the belfry is 334 steps with another 65 steps to reach the lantern or Ayrton Light above it. At the time of completion in 1859, the four-sided chiming clock was the largest and most accurate four-faced striking clock in the world.
Read a book between 315 and 399 pages long (share page total) - The Thirteen Problems by Agatha Christie 12/3/19-315p.
or read a series book #4.
*****3. The Great Clock is accurate to within one second and is operated by a custom-built Victorian mechanism that relies on gravity and a stack of coins. Ten discontinued British pennies were stacked atop its swinging pendulum. The weight of the coins balances the pendulum’s center of mass, ensuring a steady swing rate and consistent timekeeping. Removing or adding a coin alters the clock’s projection by 0.4 seconds per day. In 2009, three of the 10 pennies lost their spot to a five-pound coin celebrating London’s hosting of the 2012 Olympics.
Read a book with a clock or timepiece on the cover or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in PENNY (ignore A, An or The).
-The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20
*****4. Each of the four clock faces is set in an iron frame 23 feet in diameter, supporting 312 pieces of opal glass, much like a stained-glass window. Each clock dial is illuminated by 28 energy-efficient bulbs that have a lifetime of 60,000 hours. The surround of the dials is gilded and at the base of each dial is a Latin inscription meaning: O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First. You can tell when parliament is in session by looking at the clock face. Set above it, the Ayrton Light is illuminated during that time.
Read a book that takes place during the Victorian time period (1837-1901) or read a book you found illuminating (tell us why). In Stranger in the Forest: On Foot Across Borneo by Eric Hansen-11/4/19 , the author treks across Borneo in the 1980s...and the reader learns many things...and we witness the beginnings of the corporate rape of the forests.
*****5. The namesake bell is the largest of the tower's five bells and weighs 16 tons. It held the title of being the largest bell in the UK for 23 years. A great sense of ceremony surrounded the bell’s arrival - it was brought down the Thames by barge and taken across Westminster Bridge by a carriage drawn by 16 white horses. It then needed to be winch up to the top of the tower – a job that took 30 hours. Unfortunately, the original bell cracked during testing and a replacement bell needed to be cast.
Read a book with a title that has two words in the title that start with B or read a book that was published in a year with 1 and 6 found in the publication year (i.e. 2016, 1961, etc.). - Atomic Number Sixty by Dave Johnston -11/5/19- Pub. 2016
*****6. Big Ben chimes every hour, and the four smaller bells chime every 15 minutes. They have been serenading London for over 150 years and have rung through the reigns of six monarchs. Londoners can hear the chiming up to 5 miles away! The BBC first broadcast Big Ben’s chimes to the country during a New Year’s Eve radio broadcast in 1923 and the chiming has now become a focal point on New Years, Remembrance Day and other important events in the monarchy.
Read a book that has a holiday theme or read a book that has a monarch ((real or fictional) n the story. -Tsar Nicholas I is a character in Hadji Murat by Leo Tolstoy 12/8/19
*****7. Ordinarily, Big Ben is a beacon of English pride with its bright glow and vociferous ring. But in times of war the tower goes incognito. Its lights were dimmed and bells were silenced to keep from inviting enemy assault on the House of Parliament. Big Ben’s face was dark and silent for two years during World War I but during World War II, they darkened the clock but kept the bells ringing for moral.
Read a book with a dark colored cover or read a book whose plot is centered around war. - All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque-12/1/19
*****8. In late August 2017, the clock and bells went silent again for a four-year renovation project due to be completed in 2021. The aim is to repair and conserve the tower, upgrading facilities as necessary, and ensuring the tower's integrity for future generations. The four dials will be cleaned, the hands will be refurbished, the glass will be repaired and the cast iron framework will be renewed. While the clock mechanism is out of action, a modern electric motor will drive the clock hands. Big Ben's face will be covered but to ensure the public can set their watches during the refurbishment, one working clock face will always remain visible.
Read a newly published book you have been highly anticipating or read a book in a favorite series.- Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley 12/11/19

Tasks
1. Durbar Square
At the center of the city’s maze-like streets is the prominent landmark and Unesco World Heritage Site, Durbar Square. Durbar is the Nepalese word for palace, and the square has a rich royal heritage. It has hosted kingly coronations and important Buddhist and Hindu rituals. Bustling with locals, tourists and pigeons, it’s a great
place to explore and people watch. Several of the pagoda styled temples dating back
to the 15th century were badly damaged by an earthquake in 2015 so the area is undergoing considerable post-earthquake renovations but still remains the traditional heart of the city and highlights some of Kathmandu's best traditional architecture.
✱ Read a book with a square object or heart on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a royal or religious ceremony in it (tell us what) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in DURBAR SQUARE. - All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque-12/1/19
*****2. Boudhanath Stupa
One of the most stunning places to visit is the famous Boudhanath Stupa that towers over the city and surrounding area. A stupa is a Buddhist house of worship and Boudha is one of the largest in the world. Built around AD 600 along an ancient trade route that entered Kathmandu from Tibet, the structure consists of a giant dome that is 36 meters (118 ft) high with a Buddhist pyramid tower on top that features giant Buddha eyes. With its colorful prayer flags it is quite impressive, especially when lit up with beautiful lights at night.
✱ Read a book with a cover that features large eyes OR
✱ Read a book with a character that practices Buddhism or a book that has Buddha mentioned in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in BOUDHANATH STUPA.- Raiders of the Lost Bark by Sparkle Abbey 12/4/19
*****3. Pashupati Temple
For a fascinating cultural experience be sure to visit Pashupati Temple which is considered one of the most sacred places for Hindu devotees. Built in the 5th century,
it stretches across the banks of the beautiful and sacred Bagmati River on the eastern fringes of the capital. This magnificent sanctum draws thousands who come to offer their prayers and seek the blessings of Shiva. Sprawled over the complex are several temples and ashrams though the main temple is restricted to Hindus. If you are so inclined you can witness the unusual cremation ceremonies that are performed in the raised platforms along the river but it is not for the faint of heart.
✱ Read a series book #5 OR
✱ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in HINDU OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PASHUPATI TEMPLE. - The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon 12/3/19
*****4. Narayanhiti Palace Museum
For a clear picture of the national history and political changes that have transformed Nepal over the last 15 years be sure to visit this impressive palace. It was the site of the infamous 2001 massacre of the Royal Family by the Crown Prince who then shot himself. The next king was deeply unpopular so the people voted to abolish the monarchy in 2008. The opening of the Palace Museum a year later was a highly symbolic event of their decision. Left in its original state (bullet holes included) you feel like you have stepped back in time a decade or two. Highlights are the gold covered throne room and the banquet halls with the towering portraits of the royal family interspersed between stuffed tiger and rhino heads. The whole experience is quite raw and realistic.
✱ Read a book published in 2001, 2008 or 2009 OR
✱ Read a book with a political theme (fiction or non-fiction) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NARAYANHITI PALACE MUSEUM. - Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward 12/5/19
*****5. Garden of Dreams
For a delightful spot to escape the chaotic streets of the city be sure to visit this beautiful hidden oasis. Originally built in the 1920’s for the Marshal Kaiser, this neo-classical walled garden was originally named the "Garden of Six Seasons" referring to Nepal's six seasons. It is filled with gorgeous pavilions, a magnificent amphitheater, ponds filled with lilies and hundreds of lush trees. After the Marshal's death the garden fell into disrepair but it was later gifted to the city and restored to its former glory making it a little piece of paradise that draws in locals and tourists alike.
✱ Read a book with a garden on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with 6 found in the page count OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in GARDEN OF DREAMS. - James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl 12/3/19
*****6. Casino Royale
Get ready to experience a different side of Kathmandu. Put on your tuxedo and fancy gown and explore the royal world of Casino Royale. This sophisticated casino located in the opulent Lal Durbar Palace has a classical European elegance and is one of the finest casinos in the country. Boasting imperial ambience and international game favorites like Roulette, Blackjack, Pontoon, Baccarat, Kitty, and a host of slot machines, Casino Royale could very well be the most exciting place to be in Kathmandu. If you are willing to shell out some cash, you will be rewarded with the ultimate “James Bond” experience.
✱ Read a book with a playing card or dice on the cover - The Thirteen Problems by Agatha Christie

OR
✱ Read a book with an event in it where a tuxedo would be worn (share event) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CASINO ROYALE.
