see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Vanuatu's Capital: Port Vila
January 1, 2020 - January 31, 2020
6/6

Tasks

*****1. National Museum of Vanuatu
This excellent museum, in a soaring traditional wooden building, explores the nation’s Melanesian culture. It has a well displayed collection of native artifacts such as tamtams (carved slit drums), outrigger canoes, ceremonial headdresses, shell jewelry and examples of Lapita and Wusi pottery. There's an interesting photographic display on the unearthing of Chief Roi Mata's burial site. The one-hour guided tour includes a traditional sand drawing demonstration.

✱ Read a book with a drum, canoe, jewelry or pottery on the cover OR
✱ Read a book where the characters take a tour of some sort- In The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20- a teacher takes some of her students on a tour of a seedy section of Edinburgh
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL MUSEUM.

*****2. Ekasup Cultural Village
For a rich cultural experience visit the nearby kastom village where native islanders demonstrate the history of their traditional lifestyle. Discover how they shelter themselves, secure food, treat ailments with jungle medicines, and carefully use the resources at hand to provide a lifestyle that is comfortable and intertwined with ancient traditions. Friday night is feast night with a lavish buffet and musical entertainment. It's a great place to learn a lot and have tremendous fun!

You will find a series of clear aquamarine pools terraced up the hillside, culminating in an impressive waterfall flowing into a natural pool. Be sure to “take the plunge” and experience it up close and personal. A slippery path with guide ropes directs you to the top for a gorgeous view of the falls.

Landmarks of the World - Zuma Rock
January 1, 2020 - February 29, 2010

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Landmarks of the World - Zuma Rock
January 1, 2020 - February 29, 2010
7/7

Tasks

*****1. When visiting Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, it is impossible to miss Zuma Rock. Standing at 725 meters (2,379 ft) it majestically presides over the surrounding landscape. It is one of the tallest natural monoliths in the world and among Nigeria’s iconic natural wonders.

Read a book with a title that has a Z in it or read a book with a title that starts with a letter in ROCK. - The Overstory by Richard Powers 1/9/20

*****2. Zuma Rock is surrounded by myth and legends and visitors often notice an unusual silence when traveling in the area. Composed of gabbro and granodiorite, the natural surface of the rock depicts the image of a human face looking straight ahead in the direction of the setting sun. The native Gawri believe the face represents the ancestral powers protecting and governing the community. They also acknowledge the rock as a gateway to the afterlife and believe that when people die their spirits go to the rock.

Read a book that is based on myth or legend or read a book that includes indigenous people. - The MC in Queer by William S. Burroughs1/5/20 encounters some indigenous people in Ecuador.

*****3. Another interesting myth suggests that Zuma Rock sits on a very large expanse of underground water and if the rock were to be pulled down, there would be an outburst
of water which would submerge the entire country.

Read a book with a plot that is hard to believe- The Ravishing of Lol Stein by Marguerite Duras- the plot is surreal...not to be taken seriously
or read a book with a large expanse of water on the cover.

*****4. During the rainy season it is common for the apex of the rock to catch fire during heavy rains. The natives attribute this to the deities even though scientists have stated that is it caused by the friction of loose rocks sliding when wet.

Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in FIRE or RAIN or read a book with a scientist in it. - Rose Stanley in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20-

*****5. In the 15th century, the Zuba people named the rock “Zumwa” meaning “the place where guinea fowls are caught”. They constructed settlements around the rock and used it as a defense and protection against invading neighboring tribes. Many believed that the rocks magical powers rendered their enemies powerless and provided them a safe place.

Read a book tagged HISTORICAL - Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney 1/1/20
or read a book that features "magical powers" in some way.

*****6. Climbing Zuma Rock is a popular activity but a professional guide is needed to reach the summit for the spectacular 360 degree view. The steep climb takes around 5 hours and can be very tricky though they do have a beginner route available for first time climbers. For those less ambitious, there are many trails surrounding the rock for hiking.

Read a series book #5 or read a book that is over 360 pages long (share page count). 416p.- Broadway Anecdotes by Peter Hay 2/20/20

*****7. Nigerian’s are proud of the magnificence of Zuma Rock and you will find it featured on their 100 Naira currency banknote.

Read a book with some kind of currency on the cover or read #100 from your TBR sorted any way you like.-sorted randomly- counterfeit Russian rubles under the passports - The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman 5/13/20
The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax (Mrs. Pollifax, #3) by Dorothy Gilman

January 2020 Scavenger Challenge | Auld Lang Syne
Duration: January 1 - 31, 2020

As much as I love "Auld Lang Syne" it does make me feel a bit sad. I've chosen two recordings for your listening enjoyment while completing this challenge - Mairi Campbell and The Tenors.

7/7 Complete

1. Robert Burns wrote the words to "Auld Lang Syne" in 1788, although he himself attributes some of the verses to lots of old Scottish folk songs that had never previously been written down. He meant the words to be sung to a folk tune called Roud #1694.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book of poetry (must be 150+ pages) OR read a book that involves music in some way; tell us how.- Broadway Anecdotes by Peter Hay 2/20/20- many if not most of the anecdotes deal with Broadway musicals.

*****2. "Auld Lang Syne" roughly translates to "for old times’ sake.” The song is all about preserving old friendships and looking back over the events of the year. It evokes a sense of belonging and fellowship, tinged with nostalgia.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Reread one of your favorite books OR read a book about long ago friends reuniting.- The Ravishing of Lol Stein by Marguerite Duras

*****3. It is a much-loved Scottish tradition to sing the song just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. Everyone stands in a circle holding hands, then at the beginning of the final verse ('And there's a hand my trusty friend') they cross their arms across their bodies so that their left hand is holding the hand of the person on their right, and their right hand holds that of the person on their left.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book whose cover shows a circle or a pair of hands; post the cover OR read a book that takes place in Scotland.- The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20- takes place in Scotland

*****4. The song has become a New Year’s tradition in countries the world over. Not only is the song sung on New Year’s but it may be sung at funerals, graduations, or any ceremony of leaving or ending. The international Scouting movement ends a jamboree with "Auld Lang Syne."
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book in which any type of special occasion is being celebrated;- In Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney 1/1/20- all the action takes place on New Year's Eve...including a party

tell us what OR read a book in which a funeral takes place.

*****5. There are a total of five verses and the English version varies slightly from the original Scottish version. Though ‘auld’ gets translated as ‘old’ in the first verse, the chorus leaves the original ‘auld’ in place.

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

II
And surely you'll buy your pint cup!
and surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

III
We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we've wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

IV
We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

V
And there's a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o' thine!
And we'll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book that has been translated; tell us the original and the translated language OR read a book that has a “5” in its original publication year; tell us the year.- 1925- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos 1/2/20

*****6. The tune to which "Auld Lang Syne" is sung is much disputed over who actually wrote it, and it is not the Roud #1694 to which Burns originally set it (but it’s close). The Scots traditionally sing the song at a much faster tempo than Americans associate with the melody. George M. Cohen deliberately borrowed the first line for one of his versus of "You’re a Grand Old Flag" (But should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag.)
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book that seems to flow exceptionally fast or exceptionally slow; tell us which- fast paced action in The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman 1/17/20
OR read a book that mentions or refers to another book within its text; tell us the book being referenced.

*****7. "Auld Lang Syne" has been recorded multiple times by multiple artists. Guy Lombardo with his Royal Canadians performed it in 1939 on New Year’s Eve. He is often credited with popularizing the song in United States. Lombardo’s version is played in NYC’s Times Square immediately after the huge ball drops.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Read a book by a Canadian author; be sure to post the author link OR read a book that takes place in New York City.-The Ladies of the Corridor by Dorothy Parker 1/19/20

Challenge #390- CCC
OLYMPICS #7: Surfing
Timeframe: 1/1/20 to 1/31/20

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

OLYMPICS #7: Surfing
Timeframe: 1/1/20 to 1/31/20
5/5

*****1. Surfing at the Summer Olympics will make its debut appearance in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The dreams of Duke Kahanamoku have finally become a reality. As surfing’s earliest ambassador, the Hawaiian icon advocated for the sport’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. More than 50 years after Duke’s initial push, surfing has officially become an Olympic sport.
🏄 Read a book in which a character sets a goal and strives to reach it (briefly tell us about it) - In The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman 1/17/20, the title character is a widow in her 60s who wishes to become a spy...and succeeds.
or - a book where all words in the title start with a letter in DUKEKAHANAOKU (A, An, and The DO count).-

*****2. With the decision to have surfing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, officials announced that it would take place in the ocean and not in a wave pool, as had been speculated. To ensure quality surf, the contest will feature a waiting period of 16 days. Once the event runs, it will take two days to finish the competition.
🌊 Read a book that you had to wait for (on a library wait list or an anticipated gift) - Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney 1/1/20
or - a book with the ocean on the cover (show us the cover).

*****3. The 2020 Summer Olympics will use a four-man heat structure, meaning four athletes will compete at any given time. The best two of each heat will continue to the next round. Each heat will run for 20 to 25 minutes, with their top two scores being used.
🏄 Read a Series #4 book (tell us the series) - or - a book where a group or team of people compete against each other (briefly tell us the circumstances). In The Overstory by Richard Powers 1/9/20, tree-huggers and people in the timber industry compete for dominance.

*****4. Only one rider may ride a wave at any given time, using the common surfing etiquette rule where the surfer who is closest to the peak has right of way. Any interference with the surfer who has right of way can incur a penalty and result in point deductions. A panel of judges will determine each rider's performance from wave to wave, scoring from one to ten with two decimals. e.g. 8.51. Scores are based on the difficulty of maneuvers performed. This includes speed, power, and flow.

🌊 Read a book in which a character interferes with another character or causes problems in some way (briefly tell us how) - or - a book whose original publication YEAR includes two of the following numbers - 8, 5, 1 (tell us the year).-1925- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos 1/2/20

*****5. There will be 20 men and 20 women competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics. This is currently limited to high-performance shortboards only, separated into categories of gender. If surfing is included in upcoming games such as Paris 2024 or Los Angeles 2028, other categories such as longboarding, bodyboarding and SUP (stand up paddle board) may be included.
🏄 Read a book with an intact "20" in the total number of pages (tell us how many pages) - or - a book in which surfing is involved in some way.- surfers are main characters in some of the stories in Neon Surf: And Other Stories of Love & Remembrance by Jack Kelleher-3/27/20

Unusual Flowers
January 1 - June 30, 2020
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Unusual Flowers
January 1 - June 30, 2020
150p. min

30 of 30 Complete

Challenge

*****1. Birds of Paradise/Strelitzia Reginae , commonly known as the crane flower, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. Its names reference the open flower's resemblance to the head and beak of a colorful exotic bird. An evergreen perennial, it is widely cultivated for its dramatic flowers. In temperate areas it is a popular houseplant.
-> Read a book with a bird name intact in the title -or- read a book that is popular (at least 30,000 ratings on GR).- The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20-

*****2. Black Bat Flower/Tacca Chantrieri is a species of flowering plant in the yam family. This plant is unusual in the sense that it has black flowers, and they are bat-shaped. The flowers are up to 12 inches across, and have long 'whiskers' that can grow up to 28 inches. It is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Malaysia and Southern China.
-> Read a book with a mostly black cover (post the cover)- The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
The Big Sleep (Philip Marlowe, #1) by Raymond Chandler
-or- read a book with a bat-related thing as an important part of the plot (think vampire books or batman comics!)

*****3. Brazilian Dutchman's Pipe/Aristolochia gigantea is an ornamental plant native to Brazil. It is a vigorous evergreen climber (vine) with heart-shaped leaves and spectacular fragrant flowers and can be grown from seeds or by cuttings. The Dutchman's Pipe varieties all pose a threat to the pipevine swallowtail butterfly. The butterfly confuses the flower with its native host plant and will lay eggs on it although pipevine swallowtail caterpillars cannot survive on the foliage.
-> Read a book in which a character trusts the wrong person in some way (tell us who) - many men trust the MC (to their detriment) in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos 1/2/20
- -or- read a book with a heart shape on the cover (post the cover)

*****4. Buddhist Udumbara/Ficus Racemosa refers to the tree, flower and fruit of the cluster fig. In Buddhist literature, this tree or its fruit may carry the connotation of rarity or parasitism. The flowers of the udumbara are enclosed within its fruit, as in all figs. Because the flower is hidden inside the fruit, a legend developed to explain the absence (and supposed rarity) of the visual flower: in Buddhism, the flower was said to bloom only once every 3000 years and thus came to symbolize events of rare occurrence. In early medieval Japan and possibly elsewhere this flower is believed to be capable of saving the lives of those dying from disease.
-> Read a book where a main character is very ill (tell us who) -or- read a book set in Japan.- Territory of Light by Yūko Tsushima 1/26/20

*****5. Common Sundew/Drosera Rotundifolia is a a carnivorous plant often found in bogs, marshes and fens. One of the most widespread sundew species, it is found in all of northern Europe, much of Siberia, large parts of northern North America, Korea and Japan but is also found as far south as California, Mississippi and Alabama in the United States of America and on New Guinea. The plant feeds on insects, which are attracted to the glistening drops of mucilage, loaded with a sugary substance, covering its leaves. It has evolved this carnivorous behavior in response to its habitat, which is usually poor in nutrients or is so acidic that nutrient availability is severely decreased.
-> Read a book with an important scene set in a bog or marsh -or- read a book with a sun on the cover (post the cover).- Bond gets pursued and captured in a mangrove type marsh in Bermuda in Dr. No by Ian Fleming 5/16/20

*****6. Corpse Lily/Rafflesia Arnoldii is a species of flowering plant in the parasitic genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on Earth. It has a very strong and unpleasant odor of decaying flesh, earning it the nickname "corpse flower". The stink attracts flies and beetles which pollinate the rare plant. It is endemic to the rain-forests of Sumatra and Borneo.
-> Read a book with a death in it -or- read a large standalone book (>450p., tell us the number of pages).- The Overstory by Richard Powers 1/9/20-502p.

*****7. Dancing Girls/Impatiens Bequaertii are nicknamed for their resemblance to dancing ladies in dresses. These tiny flowers are native to East Africa and come in white and light pink. They are vines, and the flowers are little - hardly half an inch in size.
-> Read a book that has a mostly light pink cover (post the cover) - The Naked Civil Servant by Quentin Crisp-2/13/20- The Naked Civil Servant by Quentin Crisp

or- read a book in which a formal dance of some sort occurs.

*****8. FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA - KANSAS

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA - KANSAS

Duration: Jan 01, 2020 - Feb 29, 2020
Completed: 9/10

*****1. January 29th of 1861 was when Kansas joined the United States becoming the 34th state. Its capital city is Topeka. The name Kansas comes from the Kansas river, which in turn was named after the Kansa Native Americans who lived along its banks. The tribe's name is often said to mean "people of the south wind". It shares its name origins with the state of Arkansas. Kansas is nicknamed Sunflower State after its flowers.
✒ Read a book whose cover is mostly yellow - Queer by William S. Burroughs1/5/20- Queer by William S. Burroughs
or read a book whose title or subtitle contains a direction word (north, south, west and east only!) or read a book whose main characters last name begins with K.

*****2. Kansas is bordered by Nebraska on the north; Missouri on the east; Oklahoma on the south; and Colorado on the west. Kansas is the 15th-largest state by area and is the 34th most-populous of the 50 states. Residents of Kansas are called Kansans. Kansas is located equidistant from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The geographic center of the 48 contiguous states is in Smith County near Lebanon. The American Buffalo is the state animal of Kansas. The state bird is the Western Meadowlark, the state tree is the Cottonwood, and the state flower is the Wild Native Sunflower. The State motto is "Ad Astra Per Aspera" (latin for To the Stars through Difficulties).
✒ Read a book with a starry sky on the cover (post the cover) -or- read the center book from a finished series. (i.e., book #4 of a 7 book series, or #3 or #4 of a 6 book series. Tell us the series). #2 in a three book series- The d'Artagnan Romances- Twenty Years After by Alexandre Dumas -5/12/20

*****3. Kansas was first settled by Americans in 1827 with the establishment of Fort Leavenworth. The pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery debate. When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854 with the Kansas–Nebraska Act, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists prevailed, and Kansas entered the Union as a free state, hence the unofficial nickname "The Free State."
✒ Read a book with blood prominently shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a character who is working to get themselves free from something (tell us how your book works).- The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman 1/17/20- the MC fights to regain her freedom from Chinese spies in Albania

*****4. John Brown was an American abolitionist. Brown advocated the use of armed insurrection to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States. He first gained national attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis of 1856. He was dissatisfied with the pacifism of the organized abolitionist movement: "These men are all talk. What we need is action—action!" In May 1856, Brown and his supporters killed five supporters of slavery in the Pottawatomie massacre, which responded to the sacking of the town of Lawrence by pro-slavery forces. Brown was found guilty of treason when he led a raid on the federal armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, intending to start a slave liberation movement. He was hanged. He is still regarded as a controversial figure today, being remembered both as martyr and terrorist.
✒ Read a book whose author has a color for their last name (variations like Greenberg are acceptable) -or- read a book in which a character in controversial due to their actions. (tell us how your character fits).- The title character is controversial due to her unconventional teaching methods...and rumored affairs and strange politics in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark 1/1/20

*****5. When the Civil war was over, the Chisholm Trail was opened and plans began for a railroad through the state of Kansas. This inspired numerous cattle towns to be born. Places such as Abilene, Wichita, and Dodge City soon attracted every type of character - cowboys, scoundrels, outlaws, gunfighters, "painted ladies", and more. Wild Bill Hickok was a deputy marshal at Fort Riley and a marshal at Hays and Abilene. Dodge City was another wild cowboy town, and both William "Bat" Masterson and Wyatt Earp worked as lawmen in the town. In one year alone, eight million head of cattle from Texas boarded trains in Dodge City bound for the East, earning Dodge the nickname "Queen of the Cowtowns." Dodge City was also responsible for the term "red light district". The front door of Red Light Bordello was made of red glass and produced a red glow when lit at night.
✒ Read a book with a door on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which the main character goes by a nickname (tell us their name and their nickname). Nick is known as Watchman in The Overstory by Richard Powers 1/9/20

*****6. Kansas is said to be flatter than a pancake. A trio of geographers set out to prove it in 2003 using a pancake from IHOP and a laser microscope. They then compared the pancake to an east-west profile of Kansas taken from a 1:250,000 scale digital model of the state’s elevation data, and calculated flatness estimates for each. A flatness value of 1.000 would indicate “perfect, platonic flatness.” The pancake was scored as 0.957, which the researchers said is “pretty flat, but far from perfectly flat.” The value for Kansas, meanwhile was ~0.9997, or “damn flat,” as they said. “Simply put, our results show that Kansas is considerably flatter than a pancake,” the team concluded. However, their methodology was quite flawed, and any other US State would also have appeared flatter than the poor pancake. In reality, Kansas doesn't even make the top five of the flattest US states. (It's Florida).
✒ Read a book which you think is flat (either in terms of plot or characters - tell us why you thought so) - flat is an understatement for The Ravishing of Lol Stein by Marguerite Duras- so repetitive and not much of a story....something of a glimpse at some psychosis

or- read a book in which something widely believed turns out to be false.

*****7. Dwight D. Eisenhower from Abilene was the 34th President of the United States. The first woman mayor in the United States was Susan Madora Salter. She was elected to office in Argonia in 1887. The first black woman to win an Academy Award was Kansan Hattie McDaniel. She won the award for her role in "Gone with the Wind." Barton County is the only Kansas County that is named for a woman; the famous volunteer Civil War nurse Clara Barton. Kansas inventors include Almon Stowger of El Dorado who invented the dial telephone in 1889; William Purvis and Charles Wilson of Goodland who invented the helicopter in 1909; and Omar Knedlik of Coffeyville who invented the first frozen carbonated drink machine in 1961. George Washington Carver, the famous botanical scientist who discovered more than 300 products made from the peanut, graduated from high school in Minneapolis in 1885.
✒ Read a book in with a strong female MC - pioneering woman in advertising for Macy's in Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney 1/1/20
or- read a book in which a character is allergic (bonus for a peanut allergy!)

*****8. Helium was discovered in 1905 at the University of Kansas and Kansas is one of two sources of the gas in the US. Kansas ranks second nationally in average number of tornadoes per year (60) and third in tornadoes per 1,000 square miles (44). Dodge City is the windiest city in the United States, with an average wind speed of 14 mph. In 2007, a tornado leveled, or destroyed, 95 percent of Greensburg. It was 26 miles long, nearly two miles wide, and the damage it caused cost $250 million. It was the first tornado to be rated EF5. While still on the subject of tornadoes, the town of Liberal has the exact replica of Dorothy's house in the movie "The Wizard of Oz". Hutchinson is nicknamed the Salt City because it was built above some of the richest salt deposits in the world. Salt is still actively mined, processed and shipped from Hutchinson. The Kansas Speleological Society has cataloged at least 528 caves in 37 Kansas counties. The Hugoton Gas Field is the largest natural gas field in the United States. It underlies all or parts of 10 southwestern Kansas counties as well as parts of Oklahoma and Texas.
✒ Read a book that has been made into a movie (tell us the name of the movie if different from the book) -Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos 1/2/20
or- read a "light" book (151-200p., tell us the number of pages).

9. Pizza Hut restaurants opened its first store in Wichita. The first national hamburger chain started in Kansas when Walter Anderson opened the first White Castle hamburger restaurant in Wichita in 1921. Goodland boasts the world's largest easel. Sitting atop the 80 foot, 40,000 pound steel easel, is a giant replica of Vincent Van Gogh's “Sunflower” painting. In 1919 the first airplane factory in Kansas was built in Wichita, which became one of the nation's top plane manufacturing cities. A ball of twine in Cawker City measures over 38' in circumference and weighs more than 16,750 pounds and is still growing. A grain elevator in Hutchinson is 1/2 mile long and holds 46 million bushels in its 1,000 bins.
✒ Read a book marked FOOD on its main GR page -or- read a book with yarn, thread or rope on its cover (post the cover). small skein of yarn popped out of the basket - Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë - 2/8/20- Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë

*****10. There's a law in Derby County that makes it illegal for a person to hit or punch a vending machine when it has stolen the person's money. Drat! In Kansas you are prohibited from using of mules to hunt ducks. It’s also illegal to shoot rabbits from motorboats. It's illegal to catch a fish with your bare hands. In Lawrence it is illegal to wear a bee in your hat (I have no idea). And in Topeka it is illegal to sing the alphabet on the streets at night.
✒ Read a book which makes you want to punch something (sorry!) -or- read a book in which the title, author's first and last name begin with consecutive letters of the alphabet (Like Blake Crouch's Abandon or Agatha Christie's The Big Four. Ignore A, an and The in the title and the author's middle initial if they have any).- Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman 1/31/20
