February 2020 Scavenger - HOW INVENTIONS ARE BORN
Timeframe: 2/1/20 to 2/29/20
7/7

TASKS:
*****1. Velcro
In 1941, Swiss engineer George de Mestral went hunting in the Alps and afterwards noticed his clothes were covered in burdock burrs. This mechanism of clinging to passing creatures is the burdock’s way of spreading seeds across greater distances. Mestral put one of the burrs under a microscope and discovered the simple hooks which allowed it to cling to loops in his socks. Ten years later, Mestral obtained a patent for a new fabric fastener, which we now know as Velcro.
⚙️Read a book whose title starts with "V" or ENDS with "O" -Orlando by Virginia Woolf-2/8/20
(disregard A, An, The) - or - a book with some sort of fastener on the cover (a zipper, button, etc. be creative - post the cover).

*****2. Gecko skin
A gecko's strong grip depends on rows of tiny hairs, called setae, on its toes, which can cling to any surface. The advantage is a reversible, strong grip, without the need for an adhesive. Engineers have created something similar from silicone, leading to variations of gecko-skin technology. Among them is a gizmo to allow humans to climb a sheer glass wall, as well as robots being able to pull objects hundreds of times their own weight and grippers for space repairs. A future robot called LEMUR (Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robot), with very gecko-like feet could inspect and maintain installations on the International Space Station.
⚙️Read a book with some sort of robot in the story - HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke-9/26/20
or - a book where the author's first AND last initial can be found in LEMUR.

*****3. Leggy robots
On uneven terrain, such as a wild mountainside or the rugged terrain of Mars, legs can get you places wheels can’t go. DARPA has developed a series of four-legged robots based on dogs and cheetahs to deliver supplies on a battlefield. Meanwhile NASA is working on a six-legged robot called ATHLETE (All-Terrain Hex-Legged Extra-Terrestrial Explorer). This has a wheel at the end of each leg, which can roll easily, but when it runs against an obstacle it can lock down the wheels and step neatly over.
⚙️Read book #4 or #6 in a series (tell us the series) - series #4- - Diamonds Are Forever by Ian Fleming 1/23/20or - a book showing legs on the cover--not the rest of the body, just legs, feet are optional :) (show us the cover).

*****4. Bullet train kingfisher
A bullet train emerging from a tunnel generates a tremendous thunderclap due to the air-pressure that builds up in front of the nose. In the 1990's a Japanese engineer Eiji Nakatsu noticed that kingfisher birds could dive into the water with barely a splash. His design for the Shinkansen bullet train, based on the kingfisher beak, not only reduced the noise of the train but was also more aerodynamic, using less power and enabling higher speeds.
⚙️Read a book with some sort of bird on the cover - Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs 2/2/20
Tales of the Peculiar (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #0.5) by Ransom Riggs
OR in the title - or - a book originally published in the 1990's (tell us the year).

*****5. Flight – maple seed
With their rotor-like design, maple seeds whirl in the air as they fall. The lift generated through the spinning allows them to travel much further from the tree. Lockheed Martin adapted this design for a single rotor drone called Samurai. Its simple design has only two moving parts and so can be easily miniaturized. The US Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has taken on the project and aims to produce the drone to be used for reconnaissance in tight quarters.
⚙️Read the second book of a series (tell us the series)-Miss Marple series- The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie 3/4/20
- or - a book with some sort of flying man-made machine on the cover (show us the cover).

*****6. Candy-coated vaccines
Tardigrades are tiny, tough eight-legged micro-animals that live in water. Without water, tardigrades dry out but have evolved the amazing ability to reanimate after more than 100 years. They do this by coating their molecular machinery, such as DNA and proteins, in a sugar. Inspired by this idea, several biotech companies adapted the process to protect live vaccines so that they no longer need to be refrigerated. In other words, they "shrink wrap" the vaccines in a glassy film of sugars to keep them effective for six months without refrigeration.
⚙️Read a book with an 8 in the total number of pages (tell us how many) -282p. -Traveling With Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story by Sue Monk Kidd - 1/23/20
or - a book with the letters D-N-A in the title, in that order but not necessarily in the same word.

*****7. Termite buildings
African termites have evolved some clever designs to keep their mounds at a nearly constant temperature, though, outside, it may vary widely. Termites construct their mounds with a cooling system using a series of vents along the top and sides. Wind blows hot air from underground chambers through the vents and out of the structure, and the termites can even control the airflow by opening or blocking tunnels. Architect Mick Pearce used a similar strategy when he designed the Eastgate centre, an office complex in Zimbabwe. Warm air vents out the row of chimneys at the top of the building, while cooler air is drawn up from underground. The building stays cool without air conditioning and so uses only a 10th of the energy of a conventional building of the same size.
⚙️Read a book with some sort of building on the cover (post the cover) - or - a book with an architect or designer character (tell us who).- Much of one chapter features the title character explaining how he designed the elaborate underground and underwater lair in
Dr. No by Ian Fleming 5/16/20

Celebrating Carnival & Mardi Gras Around the World
February 1, 2020 - March 31, 2020
8/8

Tasks

✔1. Carnival & Mardi Gras
Carnival or Carnevale, is the Italian name for the period of celebration between Epiphany and Lent on the Christian calendar. It is derived from the Latin “carne levare” meaning “goodbye meat” or “meat be gone”. This refers to the fact that for several centuries, meat was not eaten during Lent. Mardi Gras is the last day of the festive period of Carnival occurring on Shrove Tuesday or “Fat Tuesday”. This was the last day to use up all the meat and animal products in their homes (eggs, milk, butter, etc), before entering the season of Lent and is known for being a day of indulgence and celebrations.

Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in TUESDAY - Territory of Light by Yūko Tsushima 1/26/20
or read a book published in February.

✔2. Venice, Italy
Carnival began in Italy and Venice is the perfect place to celebrate it. Every year thousands of visitors are drawn to this city’s festivities. The Venetian tradition is all about mystery and the elaborate masks they wear have become world famous. The Venetian masks range in grandeur and come in several distinct styles, including the ornate, gilded “Bauta” mask, with a pointed chin and no nose; and the more easily recognizable “Volto” mask which is stark white with elaborately painted eyes and lips. The city hosts nightly parties and balls which are attended by these masked revelers looking for mischief. The main event takes place on Fat Tuesday when the masqueraders parade in front of a panel of judges vying for the award for the most beautiful mask of all.

Read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in Venice (tell us where) or read a book with a mask on the cover. -Nevada- Diamonds Are Forever by Ian Fleming 1/23/20

✔3. New Orleans, Louisiana USA
Most Americans equate Mardi Gras with New Orleans. The celebration goes back to the 1730's when the Le Moyne brothers were sent to defend the French claim to Louisiane, an area covering modern Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and part of Texas. It has transformed over the decades, from society balls to today’s street processions including the introduction of the King of Carnival. A color scheme was adopted and you can see everyone decked out in purple for justice, gold for power and green for faith. The daily parades leading up to Fat Tuesday are organized by different “Krewes” or social clubs and include lavishly decorated floats and revelers throwing colored beads to the crowd. On Fat Tuesday, the whole city explodes into one giant party of food, drink and of course, New Orleans jazz.

Read a book with a cover that is primarily purple, gold or green or read a book that takes place in one of these US states: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi or Texas (tell us which one). - Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs 2/2/20

✔4. Nice, France
This Mediterranean city on the French Riviera claims to have the world’s oldest Carnival, dating back to 1294. It builds its 15-day festival around the blossoms of local flowers and is known for its beautiful flower parades where floats are completely covered in petals. Costumed paraders in matching clothing throw mimosas (the flower not the drink) to the crowds. In the evening the floats are lit up for a spectacular Parade of Lights. This year the floats will have a cinematic theme and visual entertainment will be relayed on giant screens for the delight of the spectators.

Read a book with flowers on the cover or read a book that takes place in a Mediterranean country.-Greece- Traveling With Pomegranates: A Mother-Daughter Story by Sue Monk Kidd - 1/23/20

✔5. Binche, Belgium
Like Venice, Binche’s Mardi Gras celebrations are famous for their masked patrons. But here, they all wear the same visage with the name of Gilles. Flocks of Gilles take to the streets on the Tuesday before Lent, wearing wooden clogs, cartoonish masks with green eyes and curly moustaches, striped orange and red linen costumes stuffed with straw, to create the illusion of a hunched back. Later in the day, the Gilles take to the streets to throw – not beads – but oranges to the assembled crowds while doing a dance with brooms to chase away evil spirits. The origins of this wonderfully bizarre tradition, which dates as far back as the 14th century, are somewhat unknown though it has won recognition from UNESCO for its historic significance.

Read a book that won an award (tell us what award) - Literary AwardsCosta Book Award for First Novel (2017), - Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman 1/31/20
or read a book that has a bizarre tradition in it (share the tradition).

✔6. Quebec, Canada
This Canadian city's French influence assures that a Mardi Gras celebration is part of their culture. But due to their intense cold weather they have put their own spin on the festivities. Their Winter Carnival is centered on the abundance of ice and snow they have and over the years the many unique traditions have made it the largest festival of its type in the world. There are giant snow sculptures, ice castles, winter balls and icy canoe races along the St. Lawrence River. The unforgettable 7-foot tall snowman mascot, Bonhomme leads the parades, serves as the lord of the Ice Palace and is the official ambassador of the masquerade ball in the impressive ballroom of the Château Frontenac.

Read a book that takes place in winter or read a book with a MC whose first names starts with a letter in BONHOMME. - Orlando in Orlando by Virginia Woolf-2/8/20

✔7. Sydney, Australia
It’s not simply Mardi Gras in Sydney; it’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, an annual LGBT pride event that attracts thousands of people every year. The tradition was born in 1978, on a night of political protest and has grown into one of the largest pride events in the world. It continues to be as politically significant as it is joyous, with a long list of festivities that span three weekends in February. There’s something for everyone including dazzling dance parties, top-tier theatre, music, world-class workshops and family focused fun, culminating with the iconic Parade. This year’s theme is “What Matters” and across the festival there are opportunities to share what is important to you.

Read a book tagged LGBT on its GR Homepage - The Naked Civil Servant by Quentin Crisp-2/13/20
or read a book about a subject that matters a great deal to you. Tell us what it is.

✔8. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro in known for having the largest Carnival in the world with two million revelers participating every year. This four day celebration is a jubilant culmination of eating, drinking, dancing, and partying. Live musicians and plenty of street food line the city’s main streets from dusk to dawn. The main event is the world-famous and elaborate Samba Parade which takes place in the Sambrodomo, a huge stadium built specifically to accommodate this amazing parade. Each year the top samba schools fiercely compete for the coveted championship title.

Read a book with a character that is a dancer or read a book by an author whose first OR last initial can be found in SAMBA.-Divine Comedy by Sabri Bebawi -2/9/20
