March 2020 Scavenger Challenge - Irish Monsters
Duration: March 1 - 31, 2020
150p. min

7/7

*****1. Banshee: In Irish folklore, a banshee is a spirit in the form of a wailing woman who appears to family members to foretell the death of one of their own. This term came to English from the Old Irish term ben side meaning “woman of the fairy mound.” In this context, a mound is the raised earth over a grave.
🍀 Read a book written by a woman - book:I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections|8242117] by Nora Ephron 3/2/20
OR read a book in which a death occurs OR read a book with a gravestone or cemetery on its cover; post the cover.

*****2. Abhartach: This truly terrifying dwarf is a cruel tyrant whose magical powers allow him to rise from the grave and wreak havoc as an undead being. He must be killed and then buried upside down to subdue his powers. In alternate iterations of the abhartach myth, this creature drinks the blood of his subjects. Some academics believe that this monster inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which in turn has influenced the modern-day concept of vampires.
🍀 Read a book with a character you consider cruel; briefly tell us why- the murderer in Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage by M.C. Beaton- 3/6/20- kills simply out of greed
OR read a book with a vampire, or vampires in it OR read a book with anything shown upside down on its cover; post the cover.

*****3. Cluricaun: The cluricaun (or cluricaune) is an Irish elf, or perhaps a fairy, in the form of a tiny old man. He exists in a state of perpetual drunkenness and loves to play practical jokes. In his work Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry, W. B. Yeats writes: “Some suppose he is merely the Leprechaun on a spree.”
🍀 Read a book where an older man (65+ years) is part of the plot - Gen. Sternwood in The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler 3/1/20
OR read a book where a lot of drinking is done OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial are in PRACTICAL JOKE.

*****4. Far Darrig: The far darrig (or fear dearg) is a small creature who always wears a red coat and cap. In Irish, his name appropriately translates to “red man.” Thought to be associated with nightmares, this practical joker of a monster delights in stealing babies and leaving changelings in their place. According to folklore, a changeling is an ugly, stupid or strange child left by fairies in place of a pretty, charming child.
🍀 Read a book with a primarily red cover; post the cover The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin 4/16/20- The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin
OR read a book in which a child is born OR read a book whose title has changed since its original publication; tell us the original name.

*****5. Fear Gorta: Fear gorta literally means “man of hunger” in Irish. This supernatural being roams the earth in the form of an emaciated man during times of famine. He begs for food and bestows good fortune on those who help him. Fear gorta can also refer to a weedy grass that, when stepped on, is believed to make men unnaturally hungry.
🍀 Read a book marked “Foodie Fiction” or “Food,” OR read a book with an expanse of grass on its cover; post the cover OR read a book in which a character always seems to be hungry; tell us who.-A significant character in The Vice-Consul by Marguerite Duras 5/2/20 is a beggar woman, unnamed, who is always looking for food in Calcutta.

*****6. Sluagh: The sluagh (or slua) are ghosts of sinners, who, unwelcome in heaven or hell, must haunt the realm of the living. Some souls were designated as sinners because they’d never been baptized; others earned their sinner status through evil and corrupt behavior in their lifetimes. From the Irish word meaning “crowd,” the sluagh were thought to move through the sky in flocks, collecting the souls of the dying.
🍀 Read a book with a plural word in its title- Confessions of a Pretty Lady: Stories True and Otherwise by Sandra Bernhard-3/17/20
- OR read a book with any type of ghost in it OR read a book with three or more similar items on its cover; post the cover.

*****7. Ellén Trechend: The Cath Maige Mucrama is a story written in Middle Irish dating from the 8th or 9th century. In this tale, the ellén trechend, a horrifying three-headed monster, emerges from a cave on a rampage of destruction. Though translators agree that the ellén trechend has three heads, they disagree on what genus of monster it is. Some interpret it to be a bird or a vulture. Others believe the ellén trechend to be a fire-breathing dragon-like creature. Either way, you can rest easy; the beast was eventually slain.
🍀 Read a book that is third in a series; tell us the series name- Miss Marple series- The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie 3/4/20
OR read a book with a “3” in its original year of publication; tell us the original date OR read a book where the first letter of each title word may be found in “ELLEN TRECHEND;” a,an,the DO count, 3 word minimum.

A – Z BOOK COVERS
DURATION: March 1, 2020 - February 28, 2021

150p. min

Once again this year, we’re challenging you to find items on the covers of the books you read that begin with each letter of the alphabet. It can be any ONE-WORD item that can easily be seen in the GR thumbnail. For example: For B, you can use a bone, a blanket, a book, whatever. A blue car would work for C (car), but NOT for B (blue).

Letters in the author's name or in the book title will not work, unless the mod running the challenge makes a special exception.

PLEASE NOTE: If we have to go to the book's main page to see an item on the cover, or if we need to enlarge the cover, the item is probably not large enough to be used for this challenge.

If you have trouble finding items beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z, you may use an item in which the letter appears – for example: a gypsy could be used for Y. You may only use each book once!

Since this is a cover-based challenge, you MUST include a link to the book cover, along with the author and the date you finished reading it.

150p. min.

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

MODERN PENTATHLON, 3/1 - 3/31
150p. min.

5/5 COMPLETE

*****1. The word pente, in Greek, means “five,” while -athlon means “contest,” conveying that the sport comprises five different events in one. The purpose behind the pentathlon dates back to the ancient Olympic Games. Originally, it was developed as a sporting event to determine the most-skilled athlete and the perfect soldier.
🏆 Read book #5 from any series; tell us the series OR a book set in a location that begins with a letter in pente; tell us the location
-England- The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie 3/4/20

*****2. Each of the five events during these ancient games – long jumping, javelin throwing, discus throwing, foot racing, and wrestling – was intended to emphasize skills essential for all soldiers of the time, who would face similar trials in battle. The winner of the pentathlon ranked as “Victor Ludorum”.
🏆 Read a book set in ancient times (before 1000 AD) OR a book whose title begins with V (disregard A, An and The)- The Vice-Consul by Marguerite Duras 5/2/20

*****3. The modern pentathlon was introduced by Baron de Coubertin at the Stockholm Games in 1912, made up of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. It was his belief that this event would test “a man’s moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby a complete athlete.” These events were chosen to reflect skills that cavalry soldiers ought to possess and refine. Modern soldiers, the event suggests, should have sword fighting skills, the ability to swim quickly, the ability to ride a horse that is unknown to the rider, accurate marksmanship with a pistol, and great agility.
🏆 Read a book with a major character who is or was in the military; tell us who OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in COUBERTIN- The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler 3/1/20

*****4. From 1912 to 1980, the Olympic modern pentathlon was held over five days with one event per day. Since 1980, the event is held over one day. Competitors score points in the first three events, which decide their starting position for the final combined event, composed of the shooting and running disciplines. The first one over the line wins the gold medal.
🏆 Read a book with a 5 in the total page count; tell us how many pages -151p.- In the Heart of the Country by J.M. Coetzee 3/8/20
OR a book with GOLD, intact, in the title, the series name or the author's name (GOLDen and GOLDberg both work); tell us the name of the series or post a link to the author's name if using those options

*****5. In 2010 during the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, athletes used a laser pistol instead of a traditional pellet-firing air gun for the combined event for the first time during an official international competition. Laser shooting was introduced for both safety reasons and to reduce the environmental impact of the lead bullets. It saw its debut at the Olympic Games in London 2012.
🏆 Read a book originally published in 2010 or 2012; tell us which year -2010- I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections by Nora Ephron 3/2/20
-OR a book with YOUNG ADULT on its main GR page

Challenge #521- Wanderlust

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Mozambique's Capital: Maputo
March 1, 2020 - March 31, 2020
100p. min.

6/6

Tasks

1. Fortaleza of Maputo
This 18th century fortress is a good place to start our visit as it lays the groundwork for the country’s colonial past and protection of its coastline. The fortress is one of the oldest structures in the city and resembles the style of other Portuguese defense outposts along Eastern Africa. Today it houses a collection of military memorabilia including statues and weaponry that tell of the history and independence of this former Portuguese colony. It also houses the remains of Ngungunhane, the final ruler of the famed kingdom of Gaza which is the area that coincides with modern Mozambique.

✱ Read a book that takes place in the 18th century OR
✱ Read a book with a character that is or once was in the military OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FORTALEZA OF MAPUTO. - Close Range by Annie Proulx 4/14/20

*****2. Central Railway Station
Considered one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, the capital’s station is certainly one of the most gorgeous buildings in Maputo. Designed by three Portuguese architects, it was built between 1908 and 1916 and is a fine example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style. In addition to serving as an active train terminus, the station contains an interesting rail museum where you can journey into the past, admiring the old locomotives and machinery. The station also hosts many musical and cultural events throughout the year.

✱ Read a book with a beautiful building on the cover OR
✱ Read a book where the characters ride a train or visit a museum- The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates-3/15/20
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION.

*****3. The Iron House
The Iron House is one of the most peculiar Maputo tourist attractions. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, this prefabricated house was created in Belgium in 1892 and then transported to Maputo to serve as the governor’s residence. But being made entirely of iron, they discovered it was too hot for the tropical climate. So this iconic building has ended up serving various purposes throughout its history and is now the seat of the ministry of culture and tourism, open to the public and free to visit. Inside you can contemplate the sublime architecture and see artifacts that document the history of Mozambique. Right next door is the Tunduru Botanical Garden, which offers a great diversity of local flora.

✱ Read a book that takes place in a tropical locale (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book with a character whose first name starts with a letter in EIFFEL - Eddie Mars in The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler 3/1/20
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE IRON HOUSE.

*****4. Feima
Feima is a daily crafts, flowers and gastronomy fair where Maputo’s artists and artisans show and sell their unique work, ranging from batik paintings, straw baskets to wooden handicrafts. Wander the open-air market set among the trees, trying the local delicacies of Mozambican cuisines and browse through the many local handicrafts to find that perfect authentic souvenir. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in the essence of the local culture.

✱ Read a book with food or handiwork on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that immersed you into a different culture - Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories by Sandra Cisneros 3/5/20
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FEIMA.

*****5. Mafalala Walking Tour
The Mafalala Walking Tour given by the IVERCA Association gives you a great look into the history of the city. This historic neighborhood in the periphery of Maputo, housed the native workers used to build the new capital during the Portuguese occupation. These workers were forced to live in temporary housing and accept for work, not allowed to cross the line that separated the “reed city” from the “concrete city”. Out of this community the Independence Movement was born along with some of Mozambique’s most prominent writers, politicians, and athletes. Today, Mafalala continues to face problems of inequality and lack of basic infrastructures. But thanks to the work of organizations like IVERCA things are slowly starting to change as they work to promote socio-economic development while preserving the rich culture and identity of its community.

✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in IVERCA - In the Heart of the Country by J.M. Coetzee 3/8/20
OR
✱ Read a book that dealt with a social injustice (tell us what) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MAFALALA WALKING TOUR.

*****6. Maputo Elephant Reserve
Found in the Maputo Bay area, the Elephant Reserve was established in 1932 with the intent to protect white rhinos and elephants. Unfortunately, a large number of both were lost to poaching during the country’s civil war, but with the help of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the area has become more secure and the herds are slowly growing. Spanning an area of about 77,400 hectares across wetland forests, sandy soils, mangroves, and coastal dune forests, it is home to a diverse variety of wildlife including hippos, crocodiles, hoofed herbivores and a multitude of bird species to delight bird watching lovers.

✱ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a character that works with animals in some way OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MAPUTO ELEPHANT RESERVE.- I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections by Nora Ephron 3/2/20

Landmarks of the World - Christ the Redeemer Statue
Timeframe: 3/1/20 to 4/30/20
100p. min.

7/7

*****1. Christ the Redeemer or Corcovado as it is frequently called, is a monumental statue of Jesus located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the most recognizable landmark of the city and has become a cultural icon for both the city and the whole country of Brazil. It is located in the Tijuca National Forest, at the top of the Corcovado Mountain where it can be seen from anywhere in the city. Over 600,000 people visit it each year.

*Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in CORCOVADO- Confessions of a Pretty Lady: Stories True and Otherwise by Sandra Bernhard-3/17/20
or read a book with over 600,000 ratings on its GR homepage.

*****2. It is the largest Art Deco statue and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. It stands 98 feet tall (not including the 26 foot pedestal) and the arms of Jesus stretch to 92 feet wide. Made of reinforced concrete clad in a mosaic of thousands of triangular soapstone tiles, the statue weighs approximately 635 tons. By comparison, it is two-thirds the height of the Statue of Liberty.

* Read a series book #5 - Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage by M.C. Beaton- 3/6/20
-or read a book that has 98 or 92 intact in its page count.

*****3. The first suggestion to build a large religious monument was made in the 1850's by a Catholic priest named Pedro Maria Boss who wanted a monument to honor their princess, Isabel. But she was opposed to the idea and denied the request for financing. However, a later petition in the early 1920's, started by a group called the Catholic Circle of Rio, was successful and the foundation stone of the base was ceremonially laid on April 4, 1922 to commemorate the centennial of Brazil’s independence from Portugal.
At this time, the monument’s final design had not yet even been chosen.

*Read a book that has a religious theme or read a book that has a ceremony of some kind in it (share what the ceremony was). - a marriage (between a woman and a snake) in Spring Flowers, Spring Frost by Ismail Kadare 3/21/20

*****4. That same year a competition was held to find a designer, and the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was chosen on the basis of his sketches of a figure of Christ holding a cross in his right hand and the world in his left. In collaboration with Brazilian artist Carlos Oswald, the design was amended to have the figure standing with arms spread wide, to show that Christ loves all and will embrace all that come to Him.

* Read a book that has hands prominently shown on the cover or read a book with a character that is an artist. -Amelia McNaughton in Flying Too High by Kerry Greenwood 3/22/20

*****5. Due to Brazil’s mandate of separation of church and state, funds to build the statue were raised privately, principally by Brazil's Catholic community. Under Costa’s supervision, construction began in 1926 and continued for five years. Constructed in pieces from stone quarried in Sweden, it was railed into the city and then carried to the mountain top to be erected. It was completed in 1931, opening to the public at its dedication on October 12th.

* Read a book originally published in October - Oct. 2015- Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon 3/6/20
or read a book a book that takes place in Brazil or Sweden.

*****6. Over the years the statue has undergone periodic repairs and renovations, including a thorough cleaning in 1980, in preparation for the visit of Pope John Paul II that year. Escalators and panoramic elevators were added in 2003 so tourists could skip the 200 steps needed to see it. In 2006 to mark it’s 75th anniversary, a chapel was built at its base and consecrated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil. The statue has actually been damaged and struck by lightning twice so lightning rods have been added to prevent further damage.

* Read a book that has lightning on the cover or read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in POPE JOHN PAUL. - I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections by Nora Ephron 3/2/20

*****7. Today, Christ the Redeemer is one of the seven New Wonders of the World, a title given in 2007 to seven world monuments to compliment the original list of seven ancient wonders.

* Read a series book #7 or read that can be found a GR list that includes the word NEW (share the name of the list).-The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin 4/16/20
on the Best Books Set in New York City-https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
