OLYMPICS CHALLENGE #13 : WATER POLO
Duration: July 1 - 31, 2020
150p. min.

1/5

*****1. Why in the world is the game called water polo? In the early days, the players rode on floating barrels that resembled mock horses, and swung at the ball with mallet-like sticks. This made it similar to equestrian polo, hence its name.
🤽🏻‍♀️ Read a book with the word "WATER" in its title; compound words are okay as long as "WATER" is intact - A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story by Linda Sue Park 10/21/20
OR read a book with a horse on its cover; remember to post the cover.

*****2. Water polo made its Olympic debut at the Paris Games in 1900. It was not included in 1904 but would be present at each subsequent edition of the Olympic Games.
🤽🏽‍♂️ Read a book that takes place in Paris OR read a book whose setting is between 1900 - 1920 A.D.; tell us when.-1914- Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart-8/19/20

*****3. Teams consist of 13 players in total, with 7 players in play at any time, 6 field players and 1 goalie. Water Polo is played in four quarters with each quarter lasting for eight minutes with a two minute break between quarters.
🤽🏻‍♀️ Read a book that is 6th, 7th, or 13th in a series; tell us the series name and the book's position-#6 in the Buton Oykuleri series- The Duel by Anton Chekhov 8/8/20-
OR read a book whose original publication date contains a "4" or an "8;" tell us the date.

****4. Players advance the ball upfield by swimming with the ball in front of them or by passing to teammates. Players are only permitted to use one hand to hold the ball (apart from the goalie who can use two hands when within 5m of their own goal). And, players are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool, so must tread water or swim for the entire match.
🤽🏽‍♂️ Read a book in which a character may be described as very athletic (does not have to be professional); tell us who -Watson is a rugby player in A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro-7/27/20
OR read a book with a hand or hands shown prominently on the cover (i.e. must take up at least half the cover); post the cover.

*****5. Teams can only retain the ball for up to 30 seconds without shooting at the goal. A goal is equal to one point and is scored when the ball is pushed or thrown completely between the goalposts and under the crossbar. The team who scores the most goals, wins the match.
🤽🏻‍♀️ Read a book with an intact "30" in its total page count; tell us the number of pages OR read a book in which the main character sets a goal and meets it; tell us who and the nature of the goal.- The author and her daughter set out to trek around Madagascar alone (mostly) and succeed in Muddling through in Madagascar by Dervla Murphy 7/14/20

Landmarks of the World - Le Château Frontenac
August 1, 2020 - September 30, 2020
100p. min.
7/7

√1. Few places define an urban skyline like the Le Château Frontenac. This grand hotel and cultural monument sits on a hillside above the St. Lawrence River in grand fashion and hovers above the heart of the walled neighborhood of Old Quebec. It is one of the most photographed hotels in the world, and it’s easy to see why. It is operated by the Fairmont Hotel chain, and welcomes visitors from around the world to share not only
its splendid location but also its many centuries of history.

* Read a book where the MC stays in a hotel -the author stays at a hotel during a trip to California- Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson 8/9/20
or read a book with a skyline or river on the cover.

√2. Old Québec served as the seat of colonial French power in North America over the better part of two centuries. It then became the British headquarters in Canada when they wrestled control of the region from France during the Seven Years’ War. The Château Frontenac resides on the grounds of the former Château St. Louis, that served
as the main administrative office for both the French and British colonial governments until it burned down in 1834. The hotel was named after Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, a key figure in New France history. He served as the governor from 1672 to 1682, and again from 1689 to 1698. His coat of arms can be found on the exterior wall
of the entrance way arch and at various other places in the hotel.

* Read a book by an author that has a Q or F somewhere their name
-The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky 8/31/20
or read an “old” book from your TBR – one that was added the first year you joined GR.

√3. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company to encourage luxury tourism, they hoped this French château -inspired hotel would induce wealthy tourists to ride their trains. The Château Frontenac was just one of a long series of château-style hotels to be built by the railway company across Canada, including the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Fairmont Château Lake Louise. It was designed by New York architect Bruce Price in an architectural style inspired by the Loire castles in France. Construction of it began in 1892.

* Read a book with a wealthy character (tell us who)-Brooke Cassady and her family live in an immense mansion in Newport, Rhode Island in Death on the Cliff Walk by Mary Kruger 8/1/20
or read a book with a travel word in the title (EX: Journey, Sail, Fly, etc.).

√4. The hotel opened its doors in 1893 with only 170 rooms. Several major expansions followed including the addition of the Citadel Wing and the 260 foot tall central tower. Completely modernized while preserving its rich architectural character, it now includes 611 guest rooms in 6 different wings, an indoor swimming pool, 3 restaurants, a fitness center, and a magnificent exterior terrace. Despite its large size, a stay at the Le Chateau Frontenac gives the best of both worlds: a chance to stay in a legitimate castle with loads of history and architecture, along with the attention and service one would expect from a small boutique hotel.

* Read a book that takes place in the 1800’s - The Duel by Anton Chekhov 8/8/20
or read a book that has a 6 in the total page count.

√5. The Château Frontenac has been the site of some major historical events. It hosted
the Quebec Conferences of World War II in 1943 and 1944. These highly confidential meetings were chaired by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Together these heads of the Western Allies planned the invasion and subsequent occupation of Western Europe. The Fathers of Confederation also gathered here to discuss unifying the British North American colonies that would later become Canada.

* Read a book that features an important historical event (tell us what)- the development of the Theory of Relativity- The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict 8/26/20
or read a book with a character that is a politician (tell us who).

√6. Throughout the years, Le Château Frontenac has emerged as one of the world’s preeminent holiday destinations. Countless international luminaries have stayed there over the years, including military aviator Charles Lindberg, Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco, French President Charles de Gaulle and celebrities: Sir Paul McCartney, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Celine Dion, just to name a few. When Queen Elizabeth II is
in town, she stays in the Château’s royal suite and Québec’s Premier Maurice Duplessis lived there during his mandates. The hotel’s magnificent architecture and beautiful décor also inspired the famous film director, Alfred Hitchcock, to shoot portions of his classic thriller, I Confess, onsite in 1953.

* Read a book that mentions a famous person (share text) or read a book that has been made into a movie - Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens-8/1/20
or inspired a TV show.

√7. This historical jewel has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1981 was formally recognized a National Historical Site of Canada. In June of 1993, Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp depicting the hotel to honor its place in Canadian history.

* Read a book that takes place in Canada or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in UNESCO or STAMP.- Euphoria by Lily King-8/3/20
