Member S*P*E*L*L Challenge #14: KIM
Date: 10/01/20 - 12/31/20
Oh my....it looks like I forgot to post this one for October 2020. So here's what we can do: (1) I've backdated the start date to October 1, 2020 so that if you wish to, you may include anything you read from October 1, 2020 and forward through the end date of December 31, 2020; (2) You may just start your challenge from the posting date of today, or use November 1, 2020 as your start date. Either of these works for me, so it's whichever option works best for you. Hopefully, I can stay on track going forward :)

Here is how it works...see how many times you can spell out KIM with the books you read between October 1, 2020 through the end of December 31, 2020. The catch is, you must complete one full spell out before moving on to the second round. Rounds do NOT have to be completed in order after you have successfully completed round 1. You are welcome to spell out the first round and consider the challenge complete, or you may move on to additional rounds.

Spell Out Options:
1. First letter of the book title
2. First letter of the author's first or last name
3. First letter of a series title
4. First letter of the main character's first or last name

K- A Separate Peace by John Knowles-10/7/20
I- The Island of South Georgia by Robert K. Headland-11/20/20

South Korea's Capital: Seoul
November 1, 2020 - November 30, 2020
100p. min.

6/6

Tasks

✔1. Cheonggyecheon
This creek was first used as a drainage system during the Joseon Dynasty, when it was named Gaecheon, meaning “open stream.” During the Japanese occupation, the creek was renamed Cheonggyecheon. Once the Korean War was over, makeshift houses popped up along the creek as many people came into Seoul to find work. Conditions alongside the river deteriorated as waste built up, so the stream was covered with concrete and an elevated highway built over it. In July 2003, the highway and concrete covering were removed, and 120,000 tons of water were pumped daily from the Han River to replenish the dried-up stream. The restoration project included a pedestrian-friendly road network as well as the preservation of the unique identity of the natural environment and historic resources that was a huge part of Seoul’s history. Opened to the public in September 2005, this renewed attraction helped local businesses and brought in global tourists.

✱ Read a book published in 2003 or 2005 OR
✱ Read a book that features a stream, creek, or river (in text or on cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in CHEONGGYECHEON.- The Godmother by Hannelore Cayre 1/14/21-

✔2. Gyeongbokgung Palace
The most important of five main palaces in Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace was the first one built in the Joseon Dynasty. It spreads out in front of the main gate. The central part of the palace was built symmetrically according to geometric order, but the other buildings were arranged asymmetrically, uniting the beauty of change and unification. This palace was founded by Taejo Lee Seong-gye in 1395. During the invasion of Imjin in 1592, it was burned down to the ground. It wasn’t until 1867, during the time of King Gojong, that it was rebuilt as a maze of over 500 buildings. It contains government offices for kings and officials as well as living spaces for royal families and support places for rest. During the Japanese occupation, most of the buildings were demolished, but a restoration project has been in place since 1990 to bring the palace back to its former glory. The government-general building has been demolished and the entire area has now been restored.

✱ Read a book that has at least 500 pages OR
✱ Read a book that takes place (at least one significant scene) at a palace or castle OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE.- Around the World in 50 Years: My Adventure to Every Country on Earth by Albert Podell-1/8/21

✔3. Bukchon Hanok Village
This village is surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine. Bukchon Hanok Village contains hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that were built in the Joseon dynasty. Bukchon translates to “northern village,” which represents its location north of Sheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno, two significant Seoul landmarks. Many of the hanoks today serve as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in traditional Korean culture. Since it is still an occupied village, all visitors are encouraged to be respectful while looking around.

✱ Read a book in which tourism is featured - the title character is an English tourist in Cyprus in Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist by M.C. Beaton-12/3/20
OR
✱ Read a book in which someone stays in a bed and breakfast or visits a tea house OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in BUKCHEON HANOK VILLAGE.

✔4. Namdaemun Market
This market is the largest traditional market in Korea. It’s a place to purchase cheap goods and fresh local fruits and vegetables, and it provides opportunities to try a wide variety of Korean snack food culture. It is almost always crowded through its open nighttime hours of 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Namdaemun Market was begun in 1414, in the 14th year of the Joseon Dynasty, as a “government lease war” given to some merchants. Throughout the centuries, this market has faced hardships such as the Japanese occupation period, the Korean War, and small and large fires in 1954, 1968, and 1977, but it has rapidly recovered every time and worked hard to maintain its position as the “best and largest market.” In 2014, Namdaemun Market celebrated its 600th anniversary.

✱ Read a book whose author was born in 1954, 1968, or 1977 OR
✱ Read a book that features a country occupying another during war (example: Germany occupying France during WWII)-Argentina invaded U.K.'s South Georgia Island during the Falklands War in The Island of South Georgia by Robert K. Headland-11/20/20
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in NAMDAEMUN MARKET.

✔5. Myeong-dong
This primary shopping district in Seoul contains many designer brand shops along its streets and alleys. Clothing, shoes, accessories, and other goods are sold at the shops. Restaurants of all sorts are also featured in this district, including family-owned restaurants, fast food, Korean, Western, and Japanese eateries. Many of the restaurants specialize in kalguksu (noodle soup) and dongaseu (pork cutlet). There are also quirky themed cafés (Hello Kitty Café, for example) and many cat and dog cafés. This district also includes other businesses, such as hair salons, theaters, and banks. It is open year round, but operating schedules vary by shop.

✱ Read a book where at least one character goes on a shopping spree OR
✱ Read a book that features a cat or dog as a pet to the main character OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in MYEONG-DONG.- -A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman-1/4/21-

✔6. Lotte World Tower
This is Seoul’s largest recreation complex. It stands tall at 123 floors (555 meters). It holds the world’s largest indoor theme park, called Lotte World Adventure; a Korean folk museum; an ice rink; Seoul Sky Observatory; an aquarium; the Gimhae Lotte Water Park; a luxury hotel; sports facilities; and movie theaters. Something unique to this facility is an artificial island inside a lake linked by a monorail and shopping malls. This is considered first-class entertainment, and they have something for the entire family to enjoy.

✱ Read a book that has between 123 and 555 pages (tell us the page count) -253p.- New Caledonia: Essays in Nationalism and Dependency by Michael Spencer-11/1/20
OR
✱ Read a book in which someone goes to an observation deck, aquarium, amusement park, or museum (bonus if it involves the whole family; tell us what type of place they visited) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initials are found in LOTTE WORLD TOWER

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA - NORTH DAKOTA
150p. min
Duration: Nov 01, 2020 - Dec 31, 2020
Completed: 10/10

From Sea to Shining Sea - North Dakota
Duration: Nov 01, 2020 - Dec 31, 2020

✔1. Both North and South Dakota became states on the same day, November 2, 1889, making them 39th and 40th states of the United States. No one knows for sure if North or South Dakota signed the ratification first, because the then Secretary of State James Blaine shuffled up the paperwork. The only reason North Dakota is listed as the 39th state is because it comes before the South alphabetically.
✒ Read a book in which there is a mix-up of some kind (tell us what it is) -or- read a book first published in a year with an 8 and a 9 (tell us the year) -pub. 1988- New Caledonia: Essays in Nationalism and Dependency by Michael Spencer-11/1/20
or- read a book with an author whose first or last name contains an intact "North" or "South".

✔2. North Dakota is bordered by the states of Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. It's also bounded by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north. Its capital city is Bismarck. North Dakota is officially nicknamed "Peace Garden state", after the Peace Garden straddling its border with Canada. It's sometimes also nicknamed the Flickertail State, referring to the ground squirrels of the state and the characteristic flick or jerk of tails they are known for.
✒ Read a book whose title has a word that ends with a "CK" -Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney-3/17/21
or- read a book with a peaceful character -or- read a book with a tailed pet in the story (tell us which kind).

✔3. The state bird of North Dakota is the Western Meadowlark, the state flower is the Wild Prairie Rose, and the state tree is the American Elm. The state name comes from the original Dakota Territory that the state was carved from, which included area covered today by North and South Dakota, as well as Montana and Wyoming. The name itself is the Sioux word for "friend". North Dakota's state motto is "Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable".
✒ Read a book with a rose on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book with a ONE in the title or subtitle -or- read a book with a main character with a friend who is also important to the plot.- The MC, Sharon is temporarily living with her friend who is going through a tough divorce in Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20

✔4. Roosevelt first came to the North Dakota badlands to hunt bison in September 1883. During that first short trip, he got his bison and fell in love with the rugged lifestyle and the "perfect freedom" of the West. He invested $14,000 in the Maltese Cross Ranch. After the death of both his wife and his mother on February 14, 1884, Roosevelt returned to his North Dakota ranch seeking solitude and time to heal. That summer, he started his second ranch, the Elkhorn Ranch, 35 miles north of Medora. Roosevelt took great interest in his ranches and in hunting in the West, detailing his experiences in pieces published in eastern newspapers, magazines and three books. His adventures in "the strenuous life" outdoors and the loss of his cattle in the starvation winter in 1886–1887 were influential in his pursuit of conservation policies as President of the United States (1901–1909). The state of North Dakota is sometimes called Roughrider State in honor of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and the only national park in the US named after a single person is the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the western part of the state.
✒ Read a book in which Teddy Roosevelt is referenced (post the line & location in the book) -or- read a book set mainly in the outdoors (tell us where) - a book about the history of South Georgia Island is almost all outdoors- whale hunting, sealing, flora and fauna, etc in The Island of South Georgia by Robert K. Headland-11/20/20
-or- read a book in which a character is farmer or a rancher.

✔5. For the longest time, Rugby, ND claimed to be the center of North America. They even have an obelisk commemorating this. Not their fault, as the previous calculations (which involved balancing a cardboard cutout of North America on a finger) of the geographical center pointed to a spot about 16 miles away from Rugby. However, recent calculations, this time on a computer, reposition the center of North America 145 miles southwest to the original spot, in a town called, wait for it... Center.
✒ Read a center book of a series (7 book series: center book is #4. 6 book series: center book can be either #3 & #4; tell us your book's position and the number of books in the series) -#6 of 13- The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket 3/23/21-
or- read a book in which someone disproves something that has been accepted for a long time (tell us how your book fits) -or- read a book with a one word, two syllable title.-

✔6. In 1881, a North Dakotan named David Henderson Houston filed a patent on the first roll film camera, which had actually been invented by his brother Peter. Eight years later he sold the patent to George Eastman, and also provided a suggestion for the name—he wanted to go with Nodak, an abbreviation of No(rth) Dak(ota), but Eastman decided to change the initial “N” to a “K,” and the rest is photographic history.
✒ Read a book with an author or main character called David, Peter or George (can be first or last name, but no variations) -or- read a book with a word in the title that begins and ends with the same letter - Openly Bob by Bob Smith-12/6/20
or- read a book with a photograph on the cover as opposed to an illustration (post the cover).

✔7. The Safeguard Program was a U.S. Army anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system designed to protect the U.S. Air Force's Minuteman ICBM silos from attack, thus preserving the US's nuclear deterrent fleet. It was intended primarily to protect against the very small Chinese ICBM fleet, limited Soviet attacks and various other limited-launch scenarios. The Safeguard system consisted of several primary components, to be constructed in several sites, but only the ones in North Dakota remain in existence. The PAR was a large passive electronically scanned array radar that was intended to detect incoming ballistic missile warheads as they crossed over the North Pole region. The radar site near Cavalier, ND, was the only one that was completed, and is now operated by the US Air Force as Cavalier Air Force station. The Missile Site Radar was the control of the Safeguard system. It housed the computers and a phased array radar necessary to track and hit back at incoming ICBM warheads. The radar building itself is a pyramid structure several stories tall. Again, only the ND site remains standing.
✒ Read a book with a pyramid shape on the cover (post the cover) - hands create a pyramid shape- The River Between by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o-1/24/21- The River Between by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o
or- read a book with Cold War as part of the plot -or- read a book in which an abandoned building is important to the plot.

✔8. The Maah Daah Hey Trail is a 144-mile non-motorized single track trail that winds through the Little Missouri National Grasslands in North Dakota's Badlands to form the longest continuous Singletrack mountain biking trail in America. The trail connects both the North Unit and South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, although biking is not allowed in the parks themselves. Maah Daah Hey is a phrase from the Mandan Indians meaning "an area that has been or will be around for a long time." The Maah Daah Hey 100 is a bike race that covers 107 miles of this trail and it claims to be the most challenging Singletrack race in North America.
✒ Read a book with a title word or author name with consecutive repeated vowels (aa, oo etc.) - Blood and Circuses by Kerry Greenwood-1/5/21
or- read a book with a bicycle on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book that has been around for a long time on your TBR (tell us when it was added).

✔9. In 1928, Dr. Henry J. Moore of Islington, Ontario conceived the idea of a garden on an international border where people could share interests and celebrate friendship. A year later, he proposed the idea and the National Association of Gardeners approved the plan for the International Peace Garden. The group decided that the site for the garden should be near the geographical center of North America, and approved the current site along the Canada (Manitoba)-United States (North Dakota) border, with a dedication on July 14, 1932. Visitors from either country can enter the park via US 281 or MB 10, without passing through customs, and may move throughout the park (crossing the international boundary at will) without restriction. However, the International Peace Garden Border Crossing stations for Canada and the U.S. are located on the roads just north and south (respectively) of the access drives for the garden, requiring all visitors – including those returning to the country from which they arrived – to go through the immigration procedures of their destination country upon leaving the garden.
✒ Read a book that involves a border crossing (let us know how your book fits) - author traveled to every country....with many involving contentious border crossings in Around the World in 50 Years: My Adventure to Every Country on Earth by Albert Podell-1/8/21
or- read a book in which the main character works with plants or flowers (let us know how) -or- read a book which has been recommended to you by a friend (preferably someone who resides in a different location than you - you're welcome to ask for recommendations here, I live in NC).

✔10. In North Dakota, it is illegal to keep an elk in a sandbox in your own backyard. It's also prohibited for bars and restaurants to serve both beer and pretzels at the same time (why?) It is illegal to swim naked in the Red River from 8 AM to 8 PM. Any other time, go right ahead? No hat wearing is allowed in Fargo when you're dancing, or even if you're standing around at an event with a dance. It's illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on. In Waverly, horses cannot sleep in bathtubs.
✒ Read a book with someone naked at any point in the book for any reason -or- read a book with a hat on the cover (it can be worn or unworn, post the cover) -or- read a book that contains recipes (not a cookbook!)-The title character does get naked for sex in one scene in Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist by M.C. Beaton-12/3/20-

OLYMPICS #17 | EQUESTRIAN DRESSAGE
November 1 - 30, 2020
150p. min.
5/5 Complete

✔1. Dressage, the highest expression of horse training, is considered the art of equestrian sport and is used as the groundwork for all other equine disciplines. The ancient Greeks recognized that if rider and horse were to survive in battle, complete cooperation was necessary between the pair and developed dressage as a method to train the horses for war. The aim of modern dressage is for the rider to prompt the horse to perform a series of pre-determined moves.
🏇 Read a book in which an old practice has been modernized; tell us what OR read a book whose author's first and last initial are in DRESSAGE.- A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman-1/4/21

✔2. Equestrian sports were featured at the Paris Games in 1900, but then withdrawn until the Stockholm Games in 1912. Since riders had to be officers, only men were allowed to compete. This restriction was lifted in 1951 which then allowed the sport to debut for women in the 1952 Helsinki Games. Equestrian sports are the only Olympic sport that allows men and women to compete together.
🏇 Read a book that takes place in any of the Scandinavian countries; tell us where OR read a book written by a male author; be sure to post the GR's author link.- The Island of South Georgia by Robert K. Headland-11/20/20

✔3. There are two competitive formats for dressage – Team and Individual. Teams are comprised of three riders who all perform individually. All riders, team and individual, compete in an opening round called the Grand Prix. Seven judges allocate marks between 0-10 for precision and execution of movement.
🏇 Read a book that is #1 through #10 in a series; tell us the series name and the book's position -#2 in the Sharon McCone series- Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20
OR read a book with a "3" or a "7" in the total number of pages; tell us how many pages.

✔4. The top 18 individual riders and the top 7 teams go to the Grand Prix Special, which is similar to the Grand Prix, with particular attention paid to transitions executed throughout the test. The Freestyle combines precision and artistry with judges’ marks given for execution of moves as well as interpretation of music played and choreography. If you’re a fan of figure skating, you can think of the levels as figures (now eliminated from competition), the short program, and the long program.
🏇 Read a book that 'mixes' two genres - one genre should be factual/precise and one genre should be artsy; so, for example a book of historical fiction would work b/c it combines history and fiction; science fiction and alternative history are also examples (as long as you can explain your logic, be as creative as you'd like) OR read a book divided into parts or sections (as well as chapters).*
*Note: generally, larger books are divided into parts (fictional books) or sections (non-fictional books) to provide more structure to the text's body than chapters do. A book that has parts or sections will also have chapters, but a book with chapters doesn't necessarily (or usually) have parts or sections.- Several Essays- New Caledonia: Essays in Nationalism and Dependency by Michael Spencer-11/1/20

5. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the Netherlands’ Anky van Grunsven confirmed her extraordinary talent by winning gold for the third consecutive time in the individual dressage event, thereby making Olympic history. Her titles total eight medals - three gold and five silver.
🏇 Read a book with "GOLD" or "SILVER" in its title; compound words okay OR read a book in which someone is considered the best in their field; tell us who and which field.- James Bond...the best in espionage- For Your Eyes Only by Ian Fleming-1/6/21
