Horoscope (from on-line or a newspaper or wherever)
Pick a date that has special meaning for you (your birthday, anniversary, birthday of a child, parent or pet, etc.)
Read your 2021 horoscope for that date.
Then read a book that relates to that horoscope.
Example: Horoscope says – While you may feel the urge to put on a pair of boxing gloves and duke it out with your family, try putting on an oven mitt instead. Cooking a meal or performing other domestic chores will help take your mind off your troubles with your family.
For this horoscope, you could read a book about a boxer or a chef or a baker or a maid or a butler or a cleaner, etc. Something in the book must somehow relate to the horoscope.
Rules: For this challenge – Each book can only be used once (If it fits more than 1 category – choose one – as it can only be used in 1 of the categories)
The bonus round is just an added challenge to kick it up a notch!
The challenge runs from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.
You don’t have to choose your books in advance. If you do, you can change your list at any time during the year.
Books can be in any format – paper, ebooks, audio…
Crossovers with other challenges are fine.
Most of all—have fun!

Paraguay's Capital: Asunción
February 1, 2021 - February 28, 2021
6/6
Tasks
✔1. Casa de la Independencia
This simple and unassuming cottage, built in the late 18th century by a Spanish settler, is an important national monument. It was here that a tightly knit political group declared Paraguay’s independence from Spanish rule in 1811. Now it houses relics of
that time, including secret documents and beautiful paintings of key members of the movement. A free guided tour and the welcoming staff help you learn about the country’s culture and heritage.
✔✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in HERITAGE (ignore A, An or The) - The History Boys by Alan Bennett-2/16/21
OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CASA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA.
✔2. The National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory
Guarded by two solemn sentinels, this restful place for quiet reflection is a shrine paying homage to Paraguay’s fallen. Interred inside the chapel are the remains of the great Paraguayan heroes, including Don Carlos Antonio Lopez (1st leader of the nation), Mariscal José Félix Estigarribia (hero of the Chaco Cold War against Bolivia), as well as the remains of two unknown soldiers. Watch for the ceremonial changing of the guard that happens throughout the day.
✱ Read a series book #2 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling-2/10/21
OR
✱ Read a book with a heroic character (briefly describe their heroism) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL PANTHEON.
✔3. Palacio de López
Blindingly white and heavily influenced by neoclassical and palladian styles, the presidential palace is perhaps Asunción’s most iconic building. Named after the former leader of the country, it was originally intended to be a grand home. Today it serves as the seat of government, with the president’s office on the ground floor. Visitors are not permitted to enter the building but you can enjoy splendid views from the large garden and take some awesome pictures of the impressive structure. For a totally different view, head back to the palace at night when it’s colorfully illuminated.
✱ Read a book with a primarily white cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a character that is a leader of an organization or government (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PALACIO DE LOPEZ.- Gigi: A Comedy in Two Acts by Anita Loos-3/9/21
✔4. Lomo San Jeronimo
Head to this upbeat, fun neighborhood for a glimpse of authentic Paraguay. One of the oldest barrios of the city, Lomo San Jeronimo welcomes visitors, and you may even catch the locals entertaining tourists with cultural songs and dances. The traditional homes are decorated in a myriad of color, the small family businesses are covered in painted murals and the narrow sidewalks boast stalls selling refreshing ice creams, chipá (cheese rolls), and drinks. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon wander. When night falls, you can grab a cocktail at one of the delightful rooftop bars or enjoy some delicious local barbeque in one of the many restaurants.
✱ Read a book that takes place in a small neighborhood OR
✱ Read a book you found to be upbeat (briefly tell us why) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in LOMO SAN JERONIMO.- The Cheshire Cat's Eye by Marcia Muller-2/2/21
✔5. Asunción Museums
The capital city has several fascinating museums to explore. Your first stop should be Museo del Barro - an essential for all things Paraguayan. It is packed with historic art that traces more than 400 years of indigenous culture and colonial invasion. Located in a quiet urban complex, the Museum of Sacred Art has an exquisite collection of carved Santos that are quite unique. And be sure to check out the unusual MUSA Museum of Chairs. The three floors of remarkable chair designs from around the world take you through an interesting history of this common item. Check out the impressive views of the city from the top of the building.
✱ Read a book with a chair on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with an indigenous or religious character (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ASUNCION MUSEUMS.- The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark- 3/5/21

Learn the nuances of pottery from an award-winning artist and then marvel at the engrossing techniques of Nanduti (or spiderweb), a traditional style of embroidery. Also known as needle lace, this famous craft from the region is known for its originality in designs, colors, and textures. You are sure to find the right souvenirs for your trip back home!

Decadent Destinations for Chocolate Lovers
February 1, 2021 - April 30, 2021
0/10
Destinations (in alphabetical order)
✔1. Belgium: Brussels
Brussels has been called the “Chocolate Capital of the World” and is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. It is home to two of the biggest chocolate companies on the planet, Godiva and Leonidas, and with having over 2000 different chocolate shops to visit, you will definitely be in chocolate heaven. Two "not to miss" shops are Mary, founded by the first woman chocolatier who she shot to stardom when the royal family began favoring her chocolates and Neuhaus who claims to be the inventor of the praline. And if you didn’t get enough sweets in the city, Brussels airport happens to be the biggest chocolate emporium in the world.
✱ Read a book that has over 2,000 reviews on its GR homepage (tell us how many) 56,892 reviews- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling-2/10/21
OR read a book that mentions an airport in its text (share text).
✔2. France: Paris
As one of the world’s gourmet capitals, it is no surprise that there are more than 300 chocolate shops waiting to be discovered on the streets of Paris. Walking tours are available to help “taste” your way around the city. Dark chocolate is the specialty here and chocolatiers are using high-quality ingredients and original recipes featuring this luscious dark confection. Paris also hosts the world’s largest consumer chocolate show, held in conjunction with the World Chocolate Master Championships. It takes place every second year and features artisan chocolatiers who’ve been recognized around the world for innovation and excellence.
✱ Read a book with a dark cover (post cover) OR read a book with a page count between 300 and 399 (post page count).-352p.- Hard Rain by Irma Venter-2/24/21
✔3. Germany: Cologne
Cologne is famous for the Stollwerck Chocolate Company, which was once the second-largest supplier of chocolate to the US. Alongside the factory is the Imhoff Stollwerck Museum, known locally as “the chocolate museum”. Both were the result of a lifelong dream of famous chocolatier, Hans Imhoff, who spent his entire life working with chocolate. Opening in 1993, the museum celebrates the history of chocolate around the world. You’ll also get to witness the impressive chocolate fountain, enjoy the interactive international exhibits and, of course, eat samples!! If you want to know everything there is to know about chocolate, you won’t want to miss this one!
✱ Read a series book #2 OR read a book that has the number 9 or 3 in its publication date (post date). pub. 1983- The Cheshire Cat's Eye by Marcia Muller-2/2/21
✔4. England: London
In the world of artisanal chocolate, London may be the most exciting place on earth. A veritable “chocolate revolution” hit the country a few years ago when dozens of high-end chocolatiers began producing what many consider to be the world’s very best chocolate. The capital prides itself on some of the most exquisite chocolate boutiques, including Paul A Young, Rococo and Hotel Chocolat. These chocolatiers are no longer producing the formerly super sweet products; instead, they forgo preservatives and chemicals, using only the finest, often local, ingredients, like goat’s cheese and caramelized rose petals. This “new” kind of chocolate must be tasted to be appreciated!
✱ Read a book by a "new to you" author (one you've never read before) - The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt-2/4/21-
OR read a book where "local ingredients" are used (be creative and tell us how).
✔5. Italy: Tuscany
Tuscany is well-known for its picturesque vineyards and fine wine, but what many
don’t realize is that a triangle formed between Florence, Pisa and Montecatini is known as "The Chocolate Valley". This picturesque countryside of rolling hills is dotted with many fantastic gourmet shops and small factories dedicated to chocolate making. In early February, a chocolate fair is held in Florence - you’ll be overwhelmed by the lingering taste and smell of sweet cocoa. While there, be sure to check out Vestri, which boasts some of the most highly rated chocolate ever. There is almost always a wait – but it is well worth your time.
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with F, P or M (ignoring A, An or The) - My Brother's Husband, Volume 2 by Gengoroh Tagame-3/2/21
OR read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in VESTRI.
✔6. Mexico: Oaxaca
Chocolate is deeply woven into Oaxaca’s history. The ancient Mesoamericans in the region were the first to cultivate chocolate as far back as 1100 BC, and Mexico has continued to produce it ever since. In Oaxaca, residents have truly embraced chocolate as part of their culture and visitors will find they can’t walk down a street without being offered a taste in some form, whether it’s a hot beverage, pastry or candy. You’ll find much of the city’s chocolate is made using old family recipes handed down through generations. Mina Street is home to both large Mexican chocolate shops, as well as smaller family-owned spots. In both, you’ll have the chance to watch the traditional chocolate making process and learn how it’s incorporated into desserts and many other aspects of the culinary experience.
✱ Read the first book of a series - Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney-3/15/21
OR read a fictional book that includes recipes (not a cookbook).
✔7. Spain: Villajoyosa
The Spanish were the very first Europeans to experience chocolate that was brought back from South America, and Villajoyosa, sometimes referred to as “Chocolate City”, has been a popular place for chocolate lovers ever since. The smell of chocolate permeates the small seaside town, which is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious chocolate factories in all of Spain - Valor Chocolate. The factory is housed in a charming 19th-century country estate known as a finca, and has always been family-run. Valor invites visitors to their onsite museum and offers a free tour of the premises, where you can learn all about the art of chocolate making. Be sure to try their chocolate with churros, an amazing local specialty.
✱ Read a book that takes place in the 19th century OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in VILLAJOYOSA.- Gigi: A Comedy in Two Acts by Anita Loos-3/9/21
✔8. St. Lucia
You might be surprised to find that this popular Caribbean island, renowned for its beautiful beaches and azure waters, is also one of the leading destinations for an exotic chocolate holiday. There are a number of resorts that cater to chocolate enthusiasts, and some even have their own cocoa plantations. At Hotel Chocolat Boucan, a small establishment run by an English chocolatier, they make their chocolate from beans that are grown on its cocoa estate. The hotel also serves cacao cuisine, a full line of amazing dishes built around the enjoyment of cocoa. Rabot Estate is another chocolate plantation worth visiting, with a Tree-to-Bar experience that allows you to walk the plantation, pick and roast the beans, and then make your very own chocolate bar from those hand-picked beans.
✱ Read a book that takes place in a resort, on a plantation or on an island -Great Britain- The History Boys by Alan Bennett-2/16/21-
OR or read a book with a location that begins with a letter in CACAO.
✔9. Switzerland: Zurich
Switzerland must be included as a destination! After all, milk chocolate was created in Zurich and the Swiss nation consumes more chocolate than anywhere else in the world. Here you will find the iconic Lindt & Sprungli chocolate factory and the famous chocolate shop, Teuscher. Their Champagne Truffles are legendary - made with Don Perignon champagne, buttercream and dark ganache. For something really unique, take a ride on the Swiss Chocolate Train which departs from Montreaux, making a stop in Gruyeres where Gruyere cheese is made, ultimately arriving in Broc where you’ll get a tour of the Cailler-Nestle factory, which offers tours that include an all-you-can-eat tasting experience.
✱ Read a book by the author you read most or by the author who has the most books on your TBR - The Ballad of Peckham Rye by Muriel Spark- 3/5/21
OR read a book where the characters take a train ride.
✔10. USA: Hershey, Pennsylvania
Originally called Derry Church, the city of Hershey was renamed in 1906 due to the popularity of Hershey chocolate. Today, it’s also known as the “Sweetest Place on Earth.” The Hershey Company and the H.B. Reese Candy Company are both found here. In this chocolate heaven, visitors can taste chocolate at Hershey’s Chocolate World, visit the Hershey Story Museum, and stay at Hotel Hershey, where there’s a real chocolate spa. Relax here with a whipped cocoa bath, a peppermint hot chocolate body wrap, a chocolate sugar facial scrub or a chocolate dipped coconut body immersion. Can’t get more into chocolate that!!
✱ Read a book with some kind of chocolate on the cover (post cover) OR read a book where the MC visits a spa. Bond visits a spa in the beginning of Thunderball by Ian Fleming-3/4/21

1. THE KISS by Gustav Klimt (1908)
An undeniable masterpiece from the Austrian's "Golden Period," the painting is at once both erotic and tender. Klimt was inspired by the style of Japanese mosaics and the universal appeal of romantic love. "The Kiss" is notable for its heavy use of gold foil.

OR read a book that has a gold object on its cover; post the cover.

3. CHEZ LE PÉRE LATHUILLE by Édouard Manet (1879)
This restrained, everyday scene depicts a more modest expression of desire. But the couple's passion is evident from their deep gazes and the position of their bodies. The model for the young man was the son of the cafe's owner, and the young woman was modeled by two different people.
❤ Read a book that is co-written by two female authors; list author links for both females OR read a book that has at least one scene set in a cafe' or bistro; tell us the establishment's name.
4. IN BED: THE KISS by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1892)
This post-Impressionist painting by Toulouse-Lautrec captures a moment of unadulterated passion between two women. It's one of several images he painted of same-sex intimacy, as he documented the lives of workers in Parisian brothels.
❤ Read a book that takes place in Paris - Gigi: A Comedy in Two Acts by Anita Loos-3/9/21
OR read a book with a character who is a prostitute / escort; tell us who.
5. FLAMING JUNE by Sir Frederic Leighton (1895)
Generally acknowledged to be Leighton's masterpiece, the painting showcases his classical training and is heavy with Greek erotic imagery. Though the woman sleeps alone, the rich colors and flowing gown set a romantic tone.

OR read a book in which the main character is a redhead; tell us who.
6. DISCARDED ROSES by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1875)
Renoir was known for his approach toward depictions of feminine beauty, and this is clearly seen in this sensual still-life painting. Renoir painted roses in many of his works, using careful brushstrokes to capture the variation in the color of their petals.
❤ Read a book by an author or with a main character named ROSE (reasonable variations accepted - i.e. Rosie, Rosemarie)-Roz in Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan-3/11/21
OR read a book with a picture of a rose or roses on its cover (roses only); post the cover.
7. THE GRAND CANAL OF VENICE (Blue Venice) by Édouard Manet (1875)

❤ Read a book that takes place in Venice OR read a book with a primarily blue cover; post the cover.- Thunderball by Ian Fleming-3/4/21-

8. PROMENADE NEAR ARGENTEUIL by Claude Monet (1873)
This Monet painting conveys innocence and longing. Notably devoid of any strong passion or eroticism, it evokes a nostalgia for days of modesty and certainty.
❤ Read a book whose author's first and last initials are in "ARGENTEUIL;" be sure to post the author link- The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves-2/27/21-
OR read a book with a character who seems modest and/or innocent; tell us who.
9. THE FISHERMAN AND THE SYREN by Frederic Leighton (1856-58)
You don't have to be an art critic to see the fire and passion that inspires this mythological painting. Though the lust may be short-lived: The mythical Sirens were said to lure sailors to their deaths.
❤ Read a book that features a Siren (aka Syren) or any other mythological creature; tell us who/what -a phoenix in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling-2/10/21
OR read a book in which a relationship is especially passionate; tell us the couple.
10. CUPID AND PSYCHE AS CHILDREN by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1890)
