JUNE 2021 SCAVENGER CHALLENGE : BELOVED FATHERS IN LITERATURE
June 1 - June 30, 2021

7/7 Complete

1) Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
A character based on Harper Lee's own father, Atticus Finch has all the makings of an incredible man. He is honest, kind, and meritorious, but what makes him excel at fatherhood is his empathy. Atticus' ability to do what he believes is the righteous thing to do regardless of the sway of the crowd makes him a role model and his ability to convey a lesson to his kids despite the turmoil in their community makes him arguably the best father in literature.
👔 Read a book that takes place in the Deep South (Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama) OR read a book that contains a courtroom scene - Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez- 12/29/21- contains a courtroom scene
OR (re-)read To Kill a Mockingbird.

2) Mr. Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Seemingly unaffected and disinterested in his daughters' lives compared to their mother, Mr. Bennet takes a different approach to fatherhood as well as married life. Where Mrs. Bennet is focused on finding wealthy husbands for her daughter, Mr. Bennet is determined that they marry someone they love. He provides a comedic reprieve to the earnest "mothering" of Mrs. Bennet.
👔 Read a book labelled HUMOR on its main GR page - Mrs. Pollifax on Safari by Dorothy Gilman -6/14/21
OR read a book where the main family has at least four daughters; tell us their names OR (re-)read Pride and Prejudice.

3) Jean Valjean from Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
Jean Valjean had come a long way from being Prisoner 24601 when he adopted Cosette. While Cosette's mother, Fantine, was sick in the hospital, Jean Valjean promised to get Cosette away from the innkeepers that were abusing her. By the time he had successfully rescued Cosette, Fantine had already passed away. He cares for Cosette like she is his own daughter and sets an example of compassion, generosity, and fatherly love.
👔 Read a book whose total page count contains two of the following numbers - 2, 4, 6, 0, or 1; tell us how many pages- A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry-6/1/21-162p.
OR read a book that takes place anywhere in France OR (re-)read Les Miserables.

4) Thomas Schell from Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
In Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Oskar's father Thomas Schell left behind a legacy of curiosity and determination. Although Thomas Schell had already passed away before the book starts, Oskar's memory of his father's adventurous games and caring heart are what stay with him throughout his life.
👔 Read a book in which a manmade disaster occurs; tell us what - the dropping of an atom bomb- The Bells of Nagasaki by Takashi Nagai-6/13/21
OR read a book that takes place in New York City OR (re-read) Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

5) Mr. Emerson from A Room with a View by E.M. Forster
Though he receives a chilly reception from other people for his refusal to follow social convention at the turn of the 20th century, Mr. Emerson believes in the power of being true to yourself. He also believes in women’s equality, and encourages Lucy Honeychurch to follow her heart rather than society’s expectations of her.
👔 Read a book in which a character is being raised primarily by their father or father-figure OR read a book in which a couple become engaged -Lata gets engaged in A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth-.-9/17/21-
or one character breaks an engagement OR (re-)read A Room with a View.

6) Joe Gargery from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Pip lost his parents when he was young, so he was left to be raised by his sister and her husband Joe Gargery. While Pip's sister was resentful of having Pip as a responsibility, Joe often took the brunt of her anger to protect Pip. Even when Pip went to the city and tried to shed his commoner background, Joe Gargery continued to love him and remain a positive influence in Pip's life especially when Pip was acting less than honorable.
👔 Read a book in which the author's first name - Untold Night and Day by Bae Suah - 6/7/21-
or one the MC's first names is only 3 letters (tell us the character if using that option) OR read a book with "GREAT" in its title (minor variations acceptable - i.e. greater, greatest) OR (re-)read Great Expectations.

7) Geppetto from Pinochio by Carlo Collodi
Geppetto was a lonely wood carver who received a block of wood without knowing it was magical. He then created a puppet out of that block of wood and before he knew it, the puppet had come alive! Doing the best he could with the responsibility of raising a boy, Geppetto raised Pinocchio as he would his own son. Throughout the book Geppetto tries to raise Pinocchio to make the right decisions and to get an education, but Pinocchio continues to find himself in troubling and morally-compromising positions. Geppetto, being the good father that he is forgives Pinocchio and leads him back to the honest path.
👔 Read any book that has been made into a movie; tell us the name of the movie if the connection isn't obvious - movie had the same title- Educating Rita by Willy Russell-6/2/21
OR read a book in which a character continuously finds themselves in trouble OR (re-)read Pinocchio

OLYMPICS #24 | EQUESTRIAN EVENTING
June 1 - 30, 2021

5/5 Complete

1. From the three disciplines that make up equestrian sport, eventing is the most demanding. Eventing covers every aspect of horsemanship: the harmony between horse and rider that characterize dressage; the contact with nature, stamina and extensive experience essential for the cross-country; the precision, agility and technique involved in jumping.
🏇 Read a book that is one of a trilogy; tell us the trilogy name and the book's position OR read a book whose author's first and last initial may be found in EVENTING (a letter may only be used as many times as it appears in the word).- The Bells of Nagasaki by Takashi Nagai-6/13/21

2. Equestrian sports were featured in the Paris Games in 1900 (jumping events only) and were then withdrawn until the 1912 Games in Stockholm. All equestrian events for the 1956 Melbourne Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden as horses were unable to enter Australia due to quarantine regulations.
🏇 Read a book that takes place in France, Sweden, or Australia -Australia- Urn Burial by Kerry Greenwood-6/1/21
OR read a book that takes place any time in the 1900's; tell us when.

3. Until 1948, only men competed in the events, as the riders had to be officers. This restriction was lifted in 1951, and, since the Helsinki Games in 1952, women have competed with men in the mixed events. It wasn't until Helena du Pont competed for the United States at the 1964 Tokyo Games that Eventing saw its first woman representing her country.
🏇 Read a book featuring a female athlete (fiction or non-fiction); tell us who OR read a book that takes place in Japan.- The Master Key by Masako Togawa- 7/14/21-

4. Sometimes called the "Triathlon of Equestrian Sport", Eventing has three components. Dressage, Jumping (rider must clear 9-12 obstacles) and a cross-country course that consists of 40-45 obstacles and must be completed in a given amount of time. The rider who has the least amount of penalties in the three combined rounds wins the gold!
🏇 Read a book whose total page count contains "40," "41," "42," "43," "44," or "45" OR read the third book in a series; tell us the name of the series.-Alexandria Quartet-#3- Mountolive by Lawrence Durrell-6/7/21

5. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, Canada’s Ian Millar did particularly well winning the silver medal in the team jumping, 36 years after his first participation in the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. At 61, he was the oldest medallist at the Beijing Games.
🏇 Read a book written by a male author; be sure to post the author link - Double Blank by Yasmina Khadra 6/26/21
OR read a book with a silver object on its cover; be sure to post the cover.

Challenge # 849-Wanderlust
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Republic of Palau's Capital: Ngerulmud
July 1, 2021 - July 31, 2021
100p. min.

6/6

1. Capitol and Government Complex
This country's capital was built in 2006 from the ground up, virtually in the middle of nowhere as you can see from the above aerial view. It is not really a city but rather a monumental complex of buildings that includes the capitol and the executive and judicial buildings of the government. Designed after the US capitol, it is an impressive sight and visitors are often surprised by the scale of the complex, especially in comparison to its modest surroundings. Many comment on the fact that it feels eerily empty most of the time. Be sure to knock on the giant columns to discover that they are actually made of plastic.

✱ Read a book with a domed building on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book originally published in 2006 OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CAPITOL COMPLEX.- The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan-7/2/21

2. Stone Faces and Monoliths
Near the capital complex you will find a collection of prehistoric and striking stone faces dating back to 895 AD that are reminiscent of Easter Island's giant statues. The largest face is that of the god-king Odalmelech who stares mutely toward the ocean. In the surrounding garden there are more statues believed to represent his five councilmen. Further north on the island is the largest and oldest archaeological site in Palau, the Badrulchau Monoliths. They are an amazing collection of 52 basalt megaliths lined up
in two rows with crude faces carved into several of them. Archaeologists estimate they date back to 161 AD. Their purpose has been in question but they are believed to be the pillars of the largest bai (meeting house) ever built in Palau. Legend says it was constructed by the gods and could house thousands of people at one time. Today it is considered a sacred prayer ground.

✱ Read a book with a face shown prominently on the cover (post cover) - Raisins and Almonds by Kerry Greenwood-7/11/21- Raisins and Almonds (Phryne Fisher, #9) by Kerry Greenwood
OR
✱ Read a book whose plot includes archaeology in some way (tell us how) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ODALMELECH or BADRULCHAU.

3. Melekeok Bai
The focus of most villages in Palau was a plaza that featured one or more elaborately carved houses made from fine hardwoods known as a bai. The most prominent bai being the meeting house for the governing male elders. The Melekeok Bai stands in isolation upon a hill accessed by a stone path. This elegant and well-proportioned structure is elaborately ornamented with traditional designs and colors, depicting important cultural motifs, stories and symbols. One of the main souvenirs of the area are storyboards. Seen as an extension of the bai, the storyboards are a graphic representation of the culture and legends passed down for centuries. Each is done by hand working from a sketch made with the help of elder storytellers.

✱ Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in BAI (use or ignore A, An or The) - A Summons to Memphis by Peter Taylor-7/17/21
OR
✱ Read a book with a male main character (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MELEKEOK.

4. Lake Ngardok Nature Reserve
Located in the northern end of Melekeok state, this nature reserve is home to the largest freshwater lake in Micronesia. The lake and surrounding marshes is an important habitat and breeding ground for the endangered Palau gray duck, Micronesian pigeon, Mariana fruit bat, and saltwater crocodile. The lake has international ecological significance and was named under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Significance. The site has a well-maintained nature trail that winds through upland forest and grasslands. A floating dock offers a close-up view of the lake and surrounding wetlands so be sure to bring your binoculars so you can catch a glimpse of the local endangered fauna.

✱ Read a book with a lake, bird or amphibian on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with the word BINOCULARS in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in LAKE NGARDOK.- Fear and Trembling by Amélie Nothomb-8/8/21

5. Ngardmau Waterfall
One of Babeldaob's premier attractions is Ngardmau Waterfall. It is the largest waterfall in Palau and flows from its tallest peak, Mt Ngerchelchuus. According to Palauan legend, it was formed by the body of a spirit, a huge eel with only one eye. One day, this spirit fell into a deep sleep, and unable to wake up again, his body became the river, with the head becoming the falls. It can be accessed on foot on a tough but rewarding jungle path. During the hike, you can find historical remains of Japanese colonial times along the trail, such as an old locomotive and other parts of an old railway system. If you’re not a hiking person, you can take a monorail or even a zip-line down to the falls. Be sure to take a dip in the cool pools at its base.

✱ Read a book with a mountain or waterfall on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in a jungle setting OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NGARDMAU WATERFALL.- Pereira Declares: A Testimony by Antonio Tabucchi-8/10/21

6. Beaches, Diving and Beyond
While you are visiting this island paradise be sure to spend time relaxing on one of the many white sandy beaches, or join a diving group to see some of the most celebrated diving locations in the Pacific. From Melekeok, you can take day trips to the other islands and snorkel in the legendary Jellyfish Lake, home to millions of these beautiful creatures, or spend a day kayaking in the country’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Rock Islands, which is made up of hundreds of uninhabited limestone islands amidst peaceful turquoise lagoons.

✱ Read a book with a beach scene on the the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where the MC snorkels, dives, kayaks or relaxes on a beach (tell us which one) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ISLAND PARADISE.-Stone Cold by Robert Swindells-7/28/21

Exploring Prehistoric Cave & Rock Paintings
July 1, 2021 to Completion
9/9

Locations

1. ARGENTINA: Cueva de las Manos
Our first location is my favorite because it reminds me of a project I helped create at my girl’s elementary school many years ago. Cueva de las Manos, located in the Patagonian region of Argentina, takes its name (Cave of the Hands) from the stenciled outlines of hundreds of human hands – most being left hands. Archaeologists believed the drawings were made by spraying color over the left hand of the painter using bone-made pipes held in their right hand. It is believed they were created over 8,000 years ago, calculated from the remains of the bone-made pipes found onsite. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991, the caves are open to the public, although the journey there is a difficult one due to its isolated location.

*Read a book that features a hand or hands on the cover (no bodies allowed) OR read a book with a 1 AND 9 in the total page count (share count).- Hotel Silence by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir-12/6/21 -149p

2. AUSTRALIA: Kakadu National Park
Located in the Northern Territory of Australia, Kakadu NP contains one of the greatest concentrations of Aboriginal art sites in Australia, with approximately 5000 sites having been discovered. The area has been the home of the Aboriginal people for over 65,000 years and the paintings are estimated to range in age from 20,000 years to the recent present, with many newer paintings covering older ones. The site at Ubirr has some of the finest examples of “X-ray art” in the world, depicting the skeletal frame and internal organs of both humans and animals. The paint used in the paintings was made from a mixture of water and crushed pigments with red being the strongest and longest lasting as evidenced by the high concentration of it. Being the largest national park in the country, covering over 20,000 square kilometers, it has a diverse landscape and is a great place to visit and experience the culture of the Aboriginal people.

*Read a book that has the letter X in the title OR read a book with a cover that is primarily RED (post cover).- My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel 7/9/21 - My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel

3. BRAZIL: Serra da Capivara
Serra da Capivara is a national park in Brazil that boasts the largest and oldest concentration of prehistoric paintings in the Americas, giving historians the earliest evidence of human civilization on the continent. There are over 300 sites found within the park, the majority consisting of rock and wall art. The paintings show human figures and wild animals integrated into complex scenes that involve supernatural beings, hunting, dancing, skirmishing, and sexual activity. The animals depicted are those which roamed the ancient brushwood forest area: armadillo, red deer, capivara, lizard, and giant rhea. Stone tools found date back to as early as 22,000 years ago which would dispute the earlier accepted date of human settlement as being closer to 14,000 years ago, creating quite the dispute among many geneticists.

*Read a book that has a major dispute between the MC and another character in it (briefly share details) - the narrator and her boss clash many times at work in Fear and Trembling by Amélie Nothomb-8/8/21
OR read a book with an author whose first and last initial is found in CAPIVARA.

4. BULGARIA: Magura Cave
Magura Cave in the Vidin province of Bulgaria is one of the largest caves in the country. The walls of the 15 million year old cave system are decorated with over 700 outstanding paintings that date back 10 000 to 8,000 years to the Neolithic and early Bronze Age period. Many of the paintings were actually created with bat guano and depict a variety of deities, religious ceremonies, animals and hunting techniques. The cave is also famous for having a depiction of the earliest known European solar calendar that represents 366 days. Today, a section of the cave has a dedicated wine-making facility that produces sparkling wines and you can actually attend music concerts in the main cave gallery during Christmas and Easter.

*Read a book where the winery or music is important to the plot - one of the MC's is a courtesan who charms another MC with her music in A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth-.-9/17/21-
OR read a book with a BAT (the animal) mentioned in the text (share text).

5. FRANCE: Chauvet Cave & Lascaux Paintings
France has two important locations, both situated in the southern portion of the country. The first being the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave which contains some of the earliest known and best-preserved figurative cave paintings in the world. Based on radiocarbon dating the oldest paintings in the cave may be up to 32,000 years old. Hundreds of animal paintings have been cataloged, depicting at least 13 different species, and including species rarely or never found in other ice age paintings.

The second site is one of the most famous in the world and is actually nicknamed “the prehistoric Sistine Chapel”. Lascaux is a complex of caves, with over 600 wall paintings covering the interior walls and ceilings of the cave. Estimated to be 17,000 years old, the paintings primarily represent fauna that correspond with the Upper Paleolithic time. Due to the damage resulting from too many people visiting the caves, it has been permanently closed to the public. The French government has built Lascaux II near
the site where tourists can see a copy of the original cave.

*Read a series book #2 OR read a book that has an animal on the cover (post cover).- Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson-8/10/21- Furiously Happy A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

6. INDIA: Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
Bhimbetka Rock Shelters and Caves are located in central India. Home to over 600 paintings that span the prehistoric Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, the oldest dates from at least 12,000 years ago. Executed mainly in red and white with the occasional use of green and yellow, the paintings were largely created with a paint extracted from vegetables instead of minerals making the colors more vibrant than other caves. They depict social life, hunting, animal fights, burials and religious rites representing the earliest traces of human life in India. Some areas are completely dedicated to wild animals with drawings of tigers, lions, elephants, monkeys and crocodiles. Designated
a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003, it is a fascinating place to visit.

*Read a book originally published in 2003 OR read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in INDIA.- Australia- Raisins and Almonds by Kerry Greenwood-7/11/21

7. Indonesia: Leang Tedongnge Cave
Archaeologists have recently discovered what they believe to be the world's oldest known cave painting of an animal or figure. It is believed to be drawn 45,500 years ago, though it was dated using the calcite on top of the actual painting so it could be even older. It was found deep in Leang Tedongnge, a remote limestone cave on the island of Sulawesi. The ancient images are a life-sized depiction of a group of Sulawesi warty pigs, two of which seem to be fighting. Those two images are badly damaged, but the third pig, possibly watching the drama unfold, remains in near-pristine condition. The two hand prints behind the pig make an interesting addition to the scene - maybe being the artist’s signature. Even though it is now considered the world’s oldest surviving representational image of a figure, the oldest human-produced art is a hashtag-like doodle created 73,000 years ago in South Africa.

*Read a book that was added to your TBR in 2021 (tell us when)
added to TBR 7/21/21- Autumn of the Phantoms by Yasmina Khadra-8/12/21
OR read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in PIG.

8. SOMALIA: Laas Gaal
Laas Gaal is an archaeological site located in Northwestern Somalia. The complex of caves and rock shelters discovered in 2002 by a French archaeological team, contain some of the earliest known rock art in the Horn of Africa and the African continent in general. The prehistoric cave paintings are estimated to be between 11,000 and 5,000 years old. They show cows decorated in ceremonial robes accompanied by humans, domesticated dogs and even a giraffe. The cave paintings are excellently preserved and retain their clear outlines and strong colors. Although the caves were well-known by locals, the French team brought international recognition to Laas Gaal and today it is one of the most popular tourist attractions and an important archaeological site in Somalia.

*Read a book with the letters COW found in the title (in any order) - It Would Be Night in Caracas by Karina Sainz Borgo-7/3/21
OR- read a book that has GR ratings listed on its home page between 5,000 and 11,000 (tell us how many).

9. SPAIN: Altamira Cave
Discovered in the late 19th century, the Altamira Cave in northern Spain was the first cave in which prehistoric paintings were discovered. The paintings were of such an astounding quality that the scientific community doubted their authenticity and accused its discoverer of forgery. It was not until 1902 that the paintings were acknowledged as genuine. The charcoal and ochre images of horses, bison and handprints are among the best preserved cave paintings in the world as the inner walls of the cave are safe from climate influences. It is believed that the earliest paintings were applied during the Upper Paleolithic, around 36,000 years ago. Closed to most visitors for conservation reasons, the site offers a museum and replica cave that is eerily atmospheric. And once a week, five people are chosen by lottery to visit the “real” cave wearing special suits, masks and shoes.

*Read a book that takes place in the 19th century - The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht-7/3/21
OR read the first book of a series by a "new-to you" author.

TCF-Hard Scavenger Hunt VIII!
July 1 - December 31, 2021.

Similar to the other Scavenger Hunt Challenges, but this one will be a bit more challenging to find all of the words and is published semi-annually.

• Most items are specific, but if in doubt about an item – just ask!

• You may use a single book to fulfill multiple items

• When you find one of the items, list the Book Title and Author (or link the cover), then specify where the item is found within the book and a blurb from the sentence. For audiobooks try to put the chapter if possible. If not, then at least let us know you got it from an audiobook.

The Twist
I have added bonus words to this challenge. For each bonus word you find, you can replace TWO (2) of the regular list words! Be sure to list which 2 words you are choosing to replace.

Good Luck & Happy Reading! ☺
