COLLECTIVE NOUN QUARTERLY
THIRD QUARTER, 2021
DATE: 07/01/21 - 09/30/21

Introducing a new quarterly challenge! Let's work our way through all the fascinating collective nouns out there! This challenge will have a task and spellout option. You can complete either or both, but books will only count for one section.

Ways to complete an item:
1. Title: The first letter of each title word or series title can be found in the collective noun or animal name; no word count limit, but all words count.

2. Author: The author's first and last initials found in the collective noun or animal name.

3. Cover: The collective noun or animal is found on the cover; please post the cover.

4. Text: The collective noun or animal name is found in the text of the book; please provide page/location and sentence information. Since these are all plural, I will accept a singular animal!

✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱

Landmarks of the World - Little Mermaid Statue
August 1, 2021 - September 30, 2021
7/7

Tasks

1. Hans Christian Andersen
Mermaids have a rich history within popular folklore all around the world. The beloved Danish author of fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen, wrote what is probably the most famous mermaid story in 1836. His heroine (who is nameless) saves the life of a ship-wrecked prince and sets off on a perilous quest to win his love. The price she pays is dear: to become human she must give up her lovely voice as well as her mermaid’s tail. But if the prince should wed another, she will turn into foam on the waves and disappear forever. This original version is a melancholy story of longing and self-denial and ends tragically, unlike the Disney version created in 1989.

*Read a book tagged FAIRY TALE, FOLKLORE or RETELLING on its GR homepage -Folklore- Arabian Nights: More Marvels and Wonders of the Thousand and One Nights, Volume II of II by Jack D. Zipes-10/13/21
OR read a book with the word MERMAID found in its text (share text).

2. Statue is Commissioned
In 1909 the founder of Carlsberg Beer, Carl Jacobsen attended a ballet based on Andersen’s tale at the Royal Danish Theatre. He was so touched by the performance
that he commissioned Edvard Eriksen, a Danish sculptor to create a likeness of the story’s heroine, asking the ballerina, Ellen Price, to model for the statue. The sculptor created the bronze statue, which was unveiled on August 23, 1913. The statue's head
was modeled after Price, but the ballerina would not agree to model in the nude, so the sculptor's wife, Eline Eriksen, was used for the body.

*Read a book with a character named EDWARD OR read a book published in the month of AUGUST of any year (share publication date).- How to Fly in Ten Thousand Easy Lessons by Barbara Kingsolver-12/12/21-pub. 8/4/2020

3. Location and Details
Upon completion, the statue was gifted to the city of Copenhagen by Jacobsen. As part of the city’s initiative to decorate parks and public areas with classical and historic figures, the Little Mermaid was displayed on a rock by the shore of the Langelinie promenade in the old port district of Nyhavn. The bronze statue is 1.25 meters (4.1 ft) tall and weighs 175 kilograms (385 lbs). She sits and looks out over the water with a melancholic face, probably reminiscing her lost mermaid past.

*Read a book with a statue on the cover (post cover) OR read a book with TWO of the following numbers in the total page count: 1, 7, 5, 3, 8, 5 (share page count).- Pereira Declares: A Testimony by Antonio Tabucchi-8/10/21-136p.

4. Tourism
The Little Mermaid has become popular among tourists worldwide and is considered a must-see attraction for all who visit the Danish capital. In fact, to this day, she is the most famous tourist attraction in all of Denmark and also boasts being the most photographed statue in the world. The Little Mermaid is free to access by walking on Langelinie road along the sea. But if you want to learn more about the mermaid story, it is recommended that you join an informative canal boat tour.

*Read a book where tourism is important to the plot (tell us how) OR read a popular book that has over 75,000 ratings on its GR homepage (tell how many).-150,475 ratings-Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson-8/10/21-

5. Vandalism
It's sad to say that this wistful young lady has suffered a lot from vandals throughout the years. She has been beheaded several times, the first being in 1964 and again in 1998. She has had her arm sawed off and been drenched in several different colors of paint. In 2003 she was blown off her rock by powerful explosives, though she didn’t sustain much damage, and was returned to her perch after being rescued from the water. Copenhagen officials have considered moving the statue further out into the harbor to discourage vandalism and to prevent tourists from climbing onto it but no change of location has happened yet.

*Read a book where something was vandalized (tell us what and how) OR read a book that was published between 1964 and 2003 (share publication year).- Autumn of the Phantoms by Yasmina Khadra-8/12/21- pub. 2000-

6. Travel
This famous lady has actually traveled across the world. The Copenhagen City Council arranged to move the statue to Shanghai to be displayed at the Danish Pavilion for the duration of the Expo 2010 (6 months). This was the first time she had been "officially" moved from her perch since she was installed almost a century earlier. But the Little Mermaid had a reminder of home with her in Shanghai, for she was displayed in the center of a basin filled with water actually taken from Copenhagen Harbor. While she was gone, the heirs of the sculptor loaned their copy of the statue to the city for display.

*Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in EXPO (ignore A, An or The) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in SHANGHAI.- Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon-8/22/21-

7. She Turns 100
In 2013, the Little Mermaid celebrated her 100th birthday and the world celebrated with her. The Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen was jam-packed with locals and tourists to commemorate her big day. But Copenhagen was not alone in the celebration. There were reports of Andersen’s heroine being honored in major cities such as Rome, Sydney, Paris, London, and Tokyo. The managing director of tourism in Copenhagen, was right in saying that, “The Little Mermaid may be a small artifact compared to other great historical monuments around the world, but she captures both history and fairy tale, which causes quite a stir outside of the borders of Denmark.”

*Read a book that takes place in one of the following cities: Copenhagen, Rome, Sydney, Paris, London or Tokyo (tell us where) -Paris- The Engagement by Georges Simenon-8/27/21 -
OR read a book where the MC celebrates their birthday in the story.

8. Optional Task
Hans Christian Andersen first published his story of the Little Mermaid in a collection of fairy tales. It included illustrations by Vilhelm Pedersen. Today you can find the story in many collections or as a stand alone in most libraries and with many online book sellers.

*Read the original story of The Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Andersen.

Challenge #876- CCC- Gimme S'More!
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

GIMME S'MORE!, 8/1 - 8/31
150p. min
7/7 COMPLETE

1. Nobody is quite sure who first created S'more, but it is believed the recipe was created by the Campfire Girls or the Girl Scouts in or around 1927. The gooey treat didn’t gain mainstream popularity, though, until the late 1960s and early 1970s.
🔶 Read a book set in the 1960s or 1970s; tell us when OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in CAMPFIRE (a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the phrase); post a link to the author's GR page- The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne-12/21/21

2. For the uninitiated, a s'more is made by layering a Graham cracker square, a hunk of chocolate, a toasted marshmallow, and another Graham cracker square. Some folks like to add a dollop of peanut butter or hazelnut spread to the tasty treat, but be sure to smoosh it all down to help the chocolate melt and to get a taste of marshmallow in every bite.
🔶 Read a book whose cover shows some kind of chocolate; post the cover OR a book to which you would like to add "a little something" to make it better; using spoiler tags, tell us what- I would have added something comprehensible and interesting since these stories were boring and stilted- Typical: Stories by Padgett Powell-10/18/21

3. S'more folklore suggests that s'mores got their name right by the campfire. After eating one, young kids chanted "gimme some more!" "Some more" quickly became s'more, and before long, s'mores became a campfire staple for everyone.
🔶 Read a book with a contraction in its title - -You’ve Got Murder by Donna Andrews-4/4/22-
OR a book with fire shown prominently on the cover; post the cover

4. The largest s’more, made at the Deer Run Camping Resort in Gardners, Pennsylvania (USA), in May 2014, weighed 267 pounds (121.11kg). Although traditionalists insist on toasting the marshmallow over a campfire, s'mores can be baked in an oven or even made in a microwave.
🔶 Read a book in which someone goes camping; tell us who-Harry Potter and the Weasley family camp out one night in Chapter 7 in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling- 10/21/22-
OR a book set in Pennsylvania; tell us where

5. Graham crackers were created in 1829 by evangelical minister Sylvester Graham (that's why "Graham" should always be capitalized), who believed in healthy eating. He also believed carnal desires were inspired by the rich, fatty goods Americans were consuming, so he thought his crackers would help curb physical arousal.
🔶 Read a book that features a religious leader; tell us who - an Imam is an MC in God in Pink by Hasan Namir-12/8/21
and their position OR a book with ROMANCE on its main GR page

6. Chocolate is made from cacao beans, grown mostly in West Africa on small, family-owned farms. A cacao tree takes 4-5 years to produce its first beans, and each tree produces about 2500 beans. It takes 400 beans to make one pound of chocolate, and 2-4 days to make a single-serving chocolate bar.
🔶 Read a book set in Africa; tell us which country OR a series book #2, 4 or 5; tell us the series name and the series position-#2 in the Beloved series- Jazz by Toni Morrison-1/3/22

7. Marshmallows owe their name to the marsh-mallow plant, a perennial flowering herb that grows in marshes, whose roots were used to make the sticky treat. Today's marshmallows are made from sugar, water and gelatin whipped to a squishy consistency, molded in cylindrical pieces of varying sizes (mini, regular and jumbo), then coated with cornstarch to prevent sticking. Today, Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows every year, and it is estimated that more than 50% of them sold during the summer are toasted over a fire.
🔶 Read one of the 20 longest books on your to-read list; tell us how many pages - A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth-.-9/17/21-1474p.
OR a book set in the summer

Fun Facts About...LICENSE PLATES!
Timeframe: 8/1/21 to 10/31/21

10/10

1. A vehicle registration plate is a metal or plastic plate attached to a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes. All countries require registration plates for road vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Some also require them for other vehicles, such as bicycles, boats, or tractors. The registration identifier is numeric or alphanumeric and uniquely identifies the vehicle or vehicle owner.
🚜 Read a book with a rectangular shape on the cover (show us the cover) - or - a book whose title starts with a letter in PLATE (disregard A, An, The).- Pereira Declares: A Testimony by Antonio Tabucchi-8/10/21-

2. France was the first country to introduce the registration plate in 1893, followed by Germany in 1896. The Netherlands was the first country to introduce a national registration plate, called a driving permit, in 1898. Initially these plates were just sequentially numbered, starting at 1, but this was changed in 1906.
🚙 Read a book set in France, Germany, or the Netherlands (tell us where) - France- The Engagement by Georges Simenon-8/27/21
or - a book with at least two sequential numbers in the total number of pages (such as 412--1 and 2 are sequential).

3. In 1901, New York Governor Benjamin Odell Jr. began to require that vehicle owners register their cars with the state. All automobiles needed to have “the separate initials of the owner’s name placed upon the back thereof in a conspicuous place, the letters forming such initials to be at least three inches in height.” At that time owners were expected to create them on their own, meaning there was no standardization. Motorists commonly used metal, wood or leather. Some even painted letters directly onto the vehicle.
🚘 Read a book whose author uses initials instead of first and/or middle name - or - a book with a "3" in the original publication year (tell us the year),- A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth-.-9/17/21-pub. 5/1/93

4. Massachusetts became the first state to issue license plates to drivers in 1903. These cobalt blue plates were made of iron and covered with porcelain enamel. The very first plate featured just the number “1.” It was issued to Frederick Tudor, who worked for the highway commission. It remains an active registration by a member of his family.
1️⃣ Read a book with a blue cover (show us the cover) - Spring Garden by Tomoka Shibasaki- 12/1/21 - Spring Garden by Tomoka Shibasaki
or - a first-in-series book (tell us the series).

5. The earliest plates were made of porcelain baked onto iron or ceramic with no backing, which made them fragile and impractical. Few of these early plates survived. Later experimental materials include cardboard, leather, plastic, and, during wartime shortages, copper and pressed soybeans.
♳ Read a book with a car on the cover (no other vehicle, just a car - show us the cover) - or - a book set during World War I or World War II.- WWII- Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez- 12/29/21

6. Early 20th century plates varied in size and shape from one jurisdiction to the next. So if someone moved, new holes would need to be drilled into the automobile (often on the bumper) to support the new plate. Standardization of plates came in 1957 when automobile manufacturers came to agreement with governments and international standards organizations.
🚗 Read a book set in the early 20th century (1900 to 1950) - The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne-12/21/21-
or - a book in which someone moves to another home (tell us who).

7. In 1931 Pennsylvania became the first state to issue customized license plates, beginning what would grow into a popular trend. At the time, however, drivers could only add their initials to the plate.
🔘 Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in CUSTOMIZED - Abbott by Saladin Ahmed-9/8/21
or - a book from a Listopia list that has the word "popular" or "can't wait" in its name (tell us the list name).

8. In 1971, 3M Company introduced High Intensity Grade Reflective Sheeting, and U.S. states began to require the new material be used in the production of license plates in order to improve visibility.
🏭 Read a book with the title in larger print than the author's name (show us the cover) -Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon-8/22/21- Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon
or - a book with 3 M's in the title.

9. Until 1977, New Hampshire required all noncommercial vehicles to have license plates containing the state motto “Live Free or Die.” Resident George Maynard cut off the words “or Die,” believing they went against his religious beliefs. He was cited for violating the state law, fined, and after refusing to pay, jailed for 15 days. Maynard sued and the case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that New Hampshire could not require citizens to display the state motto, stating “New Hampshire’s statute in effect requires that appellees use their private property as a ‘mobile billboard’ for the State’s ideological message…The First Amendment protects the right of individuals to hold a point of view different from the majority, and to refuse to foster, in the way New Hampshire commands, an idea they find morally objectionable.”
👩‍⚖️ Read a book with a court case in the plot - The Last Chronicle of Barset by Anthony Trollope-10/29/21-
or - a book with a sign of some sort on the cover (show us the cover).

10. In 2000, a 1921 Alaska license plate sold for $60,000. To date, it is the country’s most expensive license plate. Its high value is because of its rarity as the plate is one of only four known to exist. Keep in mind that in the 1920's, Alaska was not even a U.S. state and remained mostly undeveloped, with little infrastructure, including roads. Navigating its terrain in an automobile was nearly impossible, so very few people owned one. Fewer cars meant fewer license plates.
🐻 Read a book set in Alaska - or - a book that you had a hard time finding (because of an old publication date or a long wait time at the library, etc.; tell us why it was difficult to find.)- Very long waiting list for this one-A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough 12/1/21-

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA - IDAHO
150.p. min.
Duration: Jul 01, 2021 - Aug 31, 2021
Completed: 10/10

1. Idaho became the 43rd state of the United States, when it joined the union on July 3, 1890. Idaho's capital city is Boise (pronounced boy-see). In the early 1860s, when the US Congress was considering organizing a new territory in the Rocky Mountains, lobbyist George M. Willing suggested the name Idaho, which he claimed was derived from the Shoshone language, meaning the "sun comes from the mountains" or "gem of the mountains". There is no record of the Shoshone word, but the name stuck. The state also produces 72 types of precious and semi-precious stones, which led to the state being nicknamed gem state.
✒ Read a book with a gem in its title -or- read a book where someone talks knowledgably about something they know nothing about (tell us how the book fits) -Jim Davenport is a Management Consultant....but although an expert...what he doesn't understand, is that he is actually a management tool...a way for management to blame consultants for layoffs, etc in Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey-7/22/23
-or- read a book with a sunrise or sunset on the cover (post the cover).

2. Idaho borders the state of Montana to the east and northeast, Wyoming to the east, Nevada and Utah to the south, and Washington and Oregon to the west. To the north, it shares a small portion of the Canadian border with the province of British Columbia. With a population of approximately 1.8 million and an area of 83,570 square miles, Idaho is the 14th largest, the 13th least populous and the 7th least densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. Idaho forms a part of the Pacific Northwest, and is divided into two time-zones. The state's north is the relatively isolated Idaho Panhandle, which uses the Pacific Time Zone. The rest of the state uses the Mountain Time Zone.
✒ Read book #7, #13 or #14 on your TBR, sorted in random -or- read a book with a panhandle shaped object on the cover (post the cover, actual pan handle counts) -or- read a book in which the character travels across at least two time zones (tell us where they travel).- Author also the MC) travels 2 times zones from Texas to California in Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson-8/10/21-

3. A Late Upper Paleolithic site was identified at Cooper's Ferry in western Idaho near the town of Cottonwood by archaeologists in 2019. Based on evidence found at the site, people first lived in this area 15,300 to 16,600 years ago, predating the Beringia land bridge by about a thousand years. The discoverers, anthropology professor Loren Davis and colleagues, emphasized that they possess similarities with tools and artifacts discovered in Japan that date from 16,000 to 13,000 years ago. The discovery also showed that the first people might not have come to North America by land, as previously theorized. On the contrary, they probably came through the water, using a Pacific coastal road.
✒ Read a book in which a bridge or a ship is predominantly shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book whose main character is a teacher or professor -or- read a book whose location begins with a letter in BERINGIA (tell us where the book is set).-Australia- Away with the Fairies by Kerry Greenwood-8/25/21 -

4. Idaho's state flower is the Syringa, a shrub with clusters of white flowers; the state bird is the Mountain Bluebird; and the state tree is the Western White Pine. The state fruit is Wild Huckleberry, and the state gem is Star Garnet. Idaho's state motto is "Esto Perpetua" which means "It is perpetual". Idaho has 3,500 river miles, which is greater than any other state in the lower 48. Idaho's Shoshone Falls is called the Niagara of the West, and it surpasses the height of the Niagara Falls.
✒ Read a book with a fruit name in the title- Raisins and Almonds by Kerry Greenwood-7/11/21
-or- read a book with a one word title (all words count) -or- read a book with a star shape on the cover (post the cover)

5. The Appaloosa was the first horse breed to be acquired by the Nez Perce tribe around the 1700’s leading to the tribe developing into excellent horsemen and breeders. Settlers began to refer to their horses as “a Palouse horse” in reference to the Palouse River in north Central Idaho. The term evolved from that to “Palousey”, “Appalousey” and finally “Appaloosa”. An Appaloosa Horse Club was chartered in 1938 and has become one of the leading equine breed registries in the world. The Appaloosa was named Idaho’s state horse in 1975 because of its importance to Idaho history.

6. In 1939, Averell Harriman of the Union Pacific Railroad invited Ernest Hemingway and a few Hollywood celebrities to visit his brand new Sun Valley Lodge. They were offered free residence for an extended period of time as a way to promote the new resort. Hemingway had just broken up with Pauline Pfeifer, his second wife, and spent his time in Sun Valley hunting and fishing. He continued to visit often over the next few years. While in Sun Valley he worked on portions of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden and A Moveable Feast. After Castro came to power in Cuba in 1958, Hemingway purchased a house in Ketchum, where he remained until his suicide in 1961.

or- read a book that has a garden, a stream, a valley or an island on the cover (post the cover).

7. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is one of the national laboratories of the United States Department of Energy. While the laboratory does other research, historically it has been involved with nuclear research. Much of current knowledge about how nuclear reactors behave and misbehave was discovered there. Various organizations have built more than 50 reactors at what is commonly called "the Site", including the ones that gave the world its first usable amount of electricity from nuclear power and the power plant for the world's first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus. Although many are now decommissioned, these facilities are the largest concentration of reactors in the world.
✒ Read a book with some sort of research conducted and explained (tell us how your book fits, use spoiler tags if necessary) -or- read a non fiction book tagged Science on the main GR page - A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough 12/1/21

The name is trademarked by the Idaho Potato Commission (as is "Grown in Idaho") and is applied to the state's potatoes that are shipped all around the world. While the majority of Idaho's potato crop is russet, other varieties include red potatoes, fingerling, and Yukon Gold. The state harvests 13 billion pounds of potatoes annually. Rigby, Idaho is the childhood home of the inventor of the TV, Philo T. Farnsworth, and is self-proclaimed as the birthplace of television. The entire town of American Falls, Idaho was relocated in 1925 to make way for the American Falls dam. Soda Springs is home to the largest man-made geyser. The Boise State University Broncos play on the world’s only blue football field, known as The Smurf Turf. The Idaho State Penitentiary is rumored to be haunted, and was featured on the show “Ghost Adventures.” No ghosts were found.

✒ Read a book with an unsmiling person on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book by an author who is in the "dog house" for whatever reason (tell us why you've put them there, and if they're allowed back after this read) - even though this book is on Boxall's 1001 List---it's awful...and I won't give the author another try- unusual for me- Typical: Stories by Padgett Powell-10/18/21
-or- read a book with candy on the cover (post the cover).

Aesop Fable Word Search -September 2021
Dates: 09/01/21 - 09/30/21

I have always loved Aesop. For these monthly challenges, we are going to hunt for both the creatures of the fable, as well as the morals of the story, leaving out all the wee words like the, and, you, of, for, etc. We will start with the most well-known, and then dive into those less familiar, including those that maybe are too dark for children’s reading!

The Hare & the Tortoise
The race is not always to the swift.
Slow and steady wins the race.

The Fox & the Grapes
The grapes of disappointment are always sour.
There are many who pretend to despise and belittle that which is beyond their reach.

The Lion & the Mouse
A kindness is never wasted.
Small causes may produce great results.

The Dog & His Reflection
It is very foolish to be greedy.
If you covet all, you may lose all.

******************************************************************
The Challenge: Below is a list of 35 words to find within the text of a book. For each word found, you will need to provide the book title, the page or location number, the sentence containing the word, and the date you finished reading your book.

- There is no limit to the number of words found per book. (No, you don’t have to read 35 books this month, although I know there are many of you who could!)
- No page minimum.
- Words must match exactly. No substitutions, please.
