Challenge #1040-Wanderlust

Landmarks of the World: Mont Saint-Michel
February 1, 2023 - March 31, 2023
100p. min.
7/7
Tasks
1. Unique Location: Mont Saint-Michel is an almost circular granite tidal island that rises sharply out of Mont Saint-Michel Bay, between Brittany and Normandy. Most of the time the island is surrounded by vast sandbanks and it only becomes an island when high tide comes in twice a day. But the high tides are considered the highest in Europe, with a difference of 50 feet between low and high tide. Often described as having “the speed of a galloping horse", the tides come in quickly, are strong, and could be dangerous. And on a handful of days every year, the tides change so fast that the surrounding sand becomes unstable, effectively turning it into quicksand. Because of this phenomenon, this unique site would eventually hold great strategic significance.
*Read a book set in France OR read a book that has TWO words in the title that start with the letter M.- Murder in Montparnasse by Kerry Greenwood-3/13/23-
2. It All Began With a Dream: According to legend, in 708 AD, the Archangel Michael appeared to the Bishop Aubert in a vision, instructing him to build a sanctuary to honor the archangel on the rocky, inhospitable island that sits at the mouth of the Couesnon River. The legend says that Aubert didn’t take the request too seriously until Michael returned and burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger, whispering “build it and they will come”. Today, you can actually see the bishop's broken skull on display in the abbey. After this second visit, Aubert wasted no time and a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel was opened on the mont in 709 AD.
*Read a book that features a dream, vision or legend (briefly share details) OR read a book with 7, 0, 8 or 9 in the total page count (share page count).- Octopussy and The Living Daylights by Ian Fleming-7/24/23-120p
3. Centuries of Building & Modifications: Over the next 1300 years, construction on the mont represented the mastery and expertise of several generations of builders. In 966, a community of Benedictines settled there at the request of the Duke of Normandy. He brought in an the Italian architect to design the Romanesque church of the abbey, daringly placing the transept crossing at the top of the mount. Many underground crypts and chapels had to be built to compensate for this weight, forming the foundation for the upward structure we see today. After a fire in 1203, King Philip II gifted the monks with the construction of La Merveille (The Wonder). This new gothic addition to the monastery is often cited as the jewel in the crown of the Abbey's architecture.
*Read a book that features construction of some sort (briefly share details) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in LA MERVEILLE.- Colonel Sun by Robert Markham-12/20/23- ( Kinglsey Amis) -12/20/23-
4. Pilgrimage Destination: Second only to Spain's Santiago de Compostela, Mont-Saint Michel became an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, making the archangel's prophecy come true. Such was the difficulty of the journey with the high tides and quicksand, that it became a test of penitence, sacrifice, and commitment to God to reach the abbey. The abbey also became a center of medieval culture. Large numbers of manuscripts were both produced and stored there, giving it the nickname: "The City of the Books". It was a political and intellectual crossroads, visited by thousands of pilgrims and intellectuals, including several Kings of France and England. It was during this time that the village at the feet of the monastery grew, becoming home to thousands of residents that brought goods and services to the monks.
*Read a book where the MC takes a physical, spiritual or emotional journey (briefly share details) - title characters escapes awful situation by journeying across the nearly empty tundra in Alaska in -Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George-7/27-23 OR read a book with a plot focused on a book(s) or a library (tell us which).
5. The Mont Was Never Conquered: During the Hundred Years War, substantial ramparts and fortifications were built around the edge of the isle to resist the English, contributing to the fact that the island has never been invaded. Joan of Arc was even inspired by the island's stand against the English as she helped recapture France. The mont soon became a symbol of French resilience, and today you can see the two cannons, called Les Michelettes, which are proudly displayed in the town as a reminder of its invulnerability. The mont's fortifications were even used in reverse, when it became a prison during the French Revolution, creating a secure, inescapable place for the political and clerical dissidents being held there.
*Read a book where a war is important to the plot line (tell how how)- a personal account of the battles between the British and Irish in The Insurrection In Dublin: An Eyewitness Account of the Easter Rising, 1916 by James Stephens-2/12/23 OR read a book with a character that is in or once was in prison (tell us who).
6. Becoming an Historical Monument: The prison closed in 1863 and the mont was left in a state of dilapidation. But several of the high profile political prisoners, including Victor Hugo, launched a campaign to restore what they felt was a national architectural treasure. Their efforts were successful and the site was declared a historical monument in 1874, and the long process of restoration began. A causeway, constructed in 1878, made access to the mont easier, followed by a tramway line for transporting visitors. However, this causeway restricted the tide and created a problem with silt build up. A project that began in 2009 to revert the mont to a tidal island was completed in 2014. An artificial causeway was built that did not restrict the flow of water during tidal changes. Today visitors access the island on foot over this causeway.
*Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck-7/9/23-
(fiction or non-fiction) OR or read a book originally published between 2009 and 2014 (share publication year)
7. The Monks Return: It's good to hear that the abbey is again in use. A group of monks reoccupied the premises in 1966, on the millennial anniversary of its foundation. Since 2001, twelve brothers and sisters from the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem have taken up the baton; they celebrate daily services in the abbey church and welcome pilgrims and visitors from all over the world. In 1979, UNESCO named the mont one of the most important sites of medieval Christian civilization. Visiting the island is free but to enter the abbey, there is an extra cost. But it's well worth it to see the incredible architecture - it will blow you away! Keep in mind that Mont Saint-Michel isn’t a fabricated tourist destination and is home to 44 inhabitants, including those that reside in the abbey. Be respectful of their home. You may even be lucky enough to hear the hauntingly beautiful sound of their choir upon entering the abbey.
*Read a book that features a religious community (briefly share details) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MONT SAINT-MICHEL (2 word minimum).- Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey-7/21/23

THON : FOR THE KIDS, 2/1 – 2/28
150p.min.
7/7 COMPLETE
1. The first dance marathon took place in 1973 and lasted 30 hours, with 78 participants raising more than $2,000. Initially, it was a competitive event, to see which couples could raise the most money – and stay on their feet the longest. The beneficiary of that first marathon was The Sheltered Workshop for Retarded Children in Butler, PA.
🎶 Read a book with an intact 78 in its total page count; tell us how many pages- -Time Regained by Marcel Proust- 2/23/25 784p.
OR a book set in Pennsylvania
2. In 1977, Four Diamonds became the sole beneficiary, and remains so to this day. Four Diamonds was created in 1972 by Charles and Irma Millard in honor of their son, Christopher, who died of cancer as a teenager. Since then, it has reportedly assisted more than 4,800 children to fight childhood cancer, with approximately 70% of their operating budget coming from THON. Four Diamonds is also a leading researcher into a possible cure.
🎶 Read a book with a character who conducts research of some sort; tell us who and what they’re researching
The MC researches the movements of an old lover and now suspect in -Murder in Montparnasse by Kerry Greenwood-3/13/23-
OR book #4 from a series; tell us the series
For more information : https://www.fourdiamonds.org/
3. In 1979, the dance marathon changed from a competition to a collective event. THON first raised six figures in 1983, collecting $131,182. In 2022, THON raised its highest one-year total to date: $13,756,374.50. Roughly 95¢ of every dollar raised goes to the Four Diamonds; the rest is used for administrative costs (mailers, security, etc.).
🎶 Read a book originally published in 2022; tell us the date-pub.-5/3/22- Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance by John Waters-3/15/23
OR a book whose MC is a college student
4. The event is staffed entirely by student volunteers. According to the official THON website, more than 16,500 student volunteers have taken part in THON since its inception. The event has raised nearly $200 million to date. Various student organizations participate in THON’s entertainment – the freshmen football players, for example, put together a dance every year that is always one of the highlights of the weekend.
(https://www.pinterest.com/pin/5080624... [Dallas Cowboys fans might recognize #11, Micah Parsons])
🎶 Read a book where a sport is important to the story; briefly explain OR a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in VOLUNTEERS; post a link to the author’s GR page- Babbitt by Sinclair Lewis-8/21/23
5. The check that THON writes to Four Diamonds is FTK – “for the kids” – an idea that has become the event’s slogan – but it aims to benefit them in more ways than just financially. THON volunteers provide emotional support to families year-round, and bond with Four Diamonds families, who often attend THON to watch, participate and thank their supporters and friends.
🎶 Read a book whose MC provides emotional support to another character in the book; using spoiler tags, briefly explain OR a book whose MC works for an organization known by an acronym (FBI, etc); tell us the organization-The title character works for the CIA in -Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha by Dorothy Gilman-3/19/23
6. Students in grades K-12 across Pennsylvania hold their own Mini-THON events, the first being held at Hershey High School in 1993. Until 2017, Penn State student volunteers would stand at intersections and street corners “canning” – collecting donations in large cans from passing cars and pedestrians. Canning was canceled after two students died in canning-related traffic accidents.
🎶 Read a book in which a traffic accident occurs OR a book featuring a school-aged child (in grades K-12); tell us who-Greg Heffley..the Wimpy Kid is in grade school in Double Down by Jeff Kinney-2/12/23
7. I always try to catch the online broadcast of the last hour or so of each year's event, when they reveal the amount of money raised during the past year. It gives me goosebumps every time. Here's last year's reveal : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLvfl...
In addition to the fundraising dollar reveal, the last hour of the event features Dancer Relations captains from the immediate past four events performing the line dance that was featured at the event they captained.
🎶 Read a book where someone waits for something to be revealed; using spoiler tags, briefly explain -The MC waits to find out why his pursuers want a particular document that his Uncle supposedly left in his custody in Slippery Creatures by K.J. Charles-3/2/23
OR a book with a straight line visible in the cover art; post the cover

Northern Ireland-
-Apples and Cider in Armagh;
-Fifteens-You just can’t have a cup of tea in Northern Ireland without a fifteen on the side. This sweet fridge tray-bake got its name because it has 15 digestive biscuits, 15 marshmallows and 15 glacé cherries, mixed together with some condensed milk and desiccated coconut.
-Lough Neagh Eels
Also in Lough Neagh can be found the local delicacy of eels. Delicious pan-fried in butter serving up an exceptional smoked taste. Although enjoyed locally, they also go to prestigious restaurants in Europe and pie and mash shops in London.
-The Ulster Fry
Said by some to have come into existence during the Irish Famine, the Ulster Fry is different from a full Irish or a full English because of its addition of soda bread or soda farl. Why not enjoy this indulgent breakfast during a stay at the Merchant Hotel in Belfast?
-Cream Horns
Brought to our TV screens by the hit TV show Derry Girls, this sweet treat consisting of puff pastry and sweetened cream is a must try when in Northern Ireland. Cream horns are easy to find, just pop into any bakery or corner shop in Derry-Londonderry to pick one up for yourself.
-Dulse
First recorded as having been harvested by St. Columba’s monks over 1,400 years ago, this seaweed is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and protein. Just add dulse to any cooked dish to enhance flavour, or enjoy dried as an easy snack.
-The Belfast Bap
The Belfast bap is sold in the city’s bakeries today, but was created during the Irish famine as an affordable bap by Bernard ‘Barney’ Hughes, a businessman and philanthropist. You can find a sweet tribute to it in the children’s song My Aunt Jane with the line, “half a bap with sugar on top.”
-Yellowman
Sticky and crunchy, yellowman consists of brown sugar, butter, golden syrup and vinegar. Traditionally sold at the annual fair in Ballycastle, County Antrim, this treat can be found in many places in Northern Ireland, one in particular, in the form of delicious ice-cream at the 5* Lough Erne Resort’s Catalina Restaurant.
-Tayto Cheese and OnionIn 1956, the beloved Tayto crisp was born. Established by the Hutchinson family in Tandragee, this celebrated cheese and onion recipe has stayed the same for the past 60 years. Tayto fans can visit Tayto Castle, where the famous recipe is kept in a closely guarded room, to learn about how its crisps and snacks are made, and even meet Mr Tayto himself.
-Champ
Champ is made by mashing together scallions, potatoes, salt and pepper and a good helping of butter and is usually served with sausages or boiled ham. Champ, although similar, is not to be confused with colcannon, which has the addition of kale, leeks or chives.
-Fivemiletown Goat’s Cheese
This fantastically tasty goat’s cheese can be enjoyed in a beetroot risotto at the Brewer’s House in Donaghmore near Dungannon.
-Tobacco Onions
Try these crispy, deep-fried onions at Derry~Londonderry's Exchange Restaurant, just a two-minute walk from the Walled City’s City Hotel.
-Barmbrack
Barmbrack is a fruitcake containing mixed spice and moist, dried fruit which has been soaked overnight in black tea. This much-loved Irish treat is traditionally eaten at Halloween, when an object, such as a coin or ring is added to the mixture and the person who bites into it is believed to have good luck.
-Derry Milk
Although not strictly a food, the Walled City Brewery’s Derry Milk beer is worth a mention. Hand-crafted from chocolate stout and organic cow’s milk, this drink is a pretty sweet way to end a day of foodie ventures.
IRELAND-
-Irish stew
-Coddle-bacon, sausage,potatoes and onions
-fish and chips
-Collar and cabbage-boiled bacon covered in bread crumbs and brown sugar...then baked and served with cabbage
-Boxty-potato pancake filled with meat, fish or veggies

Lucky Charms
March 1, 2023 - May 31, 2023
0/9
1. Four-Leaf Clover
Four-leaf clovers are an ancient Irish symbol of luck. Among the Celtic, it was a common belief that finding one would help people see fairies and avoid their mischief, a common source of bad luck. Though the odds of finding a four-leaf clover is allegedly 1 in 10,000, which is probably why it’s considered so lucky. Some legends attribute the four leaves to faith, hope, love, and luck; while others say they'll bring fame, wealth, health, and faithful love. According to Irish Catholic tradition, the shamrock leaves represent the holy trinity. One for the father, one for the son, one for the holy spirit and the fourth for god’s grace.
🍀 Read a series book #4 OR read a book with cover that is mostly green (post cover).
2. Horseshoe
Horseshoes have various legends from different cultures attributing lucky powers to them. They can even be found in Islamic art and Egyptian iconography. But the most notable legend attributes lucky horseshoes to Saint Dunstan, a English bishop from the 10th century. Dunstan was said to have nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's foot when he was asked to re-shoe the Devil's cloven hoof. This caused the Devil great pain, and Dunstan only agreed to remove the shoe and release the Devil after he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe is nailed over the door.
🍀 Read a book with a title that includes the word DEVIL('S) OR read a book that includes the word HORSESHOE in the text (share text).
3. Hamsa
The Hamsa Hand is common in both Jewish and Muslim communities in the Middle East. It is a sign of good luck and protection against negative energy. Depending on the culture, the symbol of the hand bears different meanings. The word “hamsa” references the number five in Hebrew and is said to symbolize the five books of the Torah. In Islam, the five fingers are associated with the Five Pillars of Islam. The eye on the hand represents an eye that sees everything and watches out for the beholder.
🍀 Read a book in which religion is an important part of the story (share how) OR read a book that takes place in the Middle East (tell us where).
4. Nazar
The Nazar, or evil eye, is an amulet for protection against those without good intentions. The origin of the Nazar hails from Turkey and its neighboring countries. It is usually a beaded, blue jewel that is worn or used on personal items for protection. Unlike the Hamsa, the Nazar has no religious significance. Because of this, it has become popular in countries all over the world.
🍀 Read a book with an eye shown prominently on the cover (post cover) OR read a book where the MC needs protection (tell us why).
5. Cornicello
Italy has their own ancient charm to protect against the "evil eye" and bad luck in general. It is an Italian horn known as a cornicello. It is a common good luck symbol and also believed to promote fertility, virility and to maintain happiness in marriage. Historians differ on the inspiration for the horn shape, most pointing to the African eland horn. It is also linked to Greek and Roman mythology as a symbol of fertility and the earth after Zeus broke a horn from a goat. Over time, the cornicello has become very stylized and is often worn as jewelry made of gold, silver, bone, or red coral. Many are topped with a crown that signifies wealth.
🍀 Read a book that features a married couple as the main characters (tell us who) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in CORNICELLO.
6. Dreamcatcher
Dreamcatchers come from Native American lore. Looking like a web or net stretched over a loop and decorated with bright beads and feathers, they are meant to catch bad dreams as they enter a household. By capturing these disturbing dreams, they make the owner happier, more balanced, and luckier. Legend has it that when the sun rises, the bad dreams caught in the dream catcher dissolve, as they cannot survive daylight. The Chippewa, or Ojibwa, Native Americans originally designed these dream catchers to help protect their children and is associated with the Asibikaashi, or Spider Woman. She was the caretaker of all children in Ojibwa legend.
🍀 Read a book with an important character that is Native American OR read a book where the MC has trouble sleeping or has nightmares (tell us which).
7. Dala Horse
The Dala Horse of Sweden is hugely significant in Swedish culture and identity. Known in Swedish as Dalahäst, it embodies a shared history of man and beast in the Scandinavian landscape that has endured for more than two millennia. Horses were considered a holy animal, worshiped by pagan cults and considered a prestigious partner by medieval knights. These talismans were names for the Swedish province of Dalarna, where the first horse statuette was crafted. Today, these beautiful horses are a symbol of good luck and thought to bring strength and dignity. It is also recognized as the unofficial symbol of Sweden.
🍀 Read a book by a Swedish author or that takes place in Sweden OR read a book with an MC who in an artist or crafts person (tell us which).
8. Rabbit Foot
A rabbit’s foot is known worldwide as a good luck symbol. Countries such as England, Spain, China and the US are among the many that recognize this global talisman. Numerous websites trace the belief to ancient Celts who believed rabbits, being creatures that burrow into the Earth, could communicate directly with gods and spirits. Others attribute the charm to “African American magical traditions” and the witty character of B’rer Rabbit, known to use his brain to overcome adversity. Rabbits are legendary for their good luck vibe. Many in Britain and North America are known to speak the words "rabbit, rabbit" aloud upon waking on the first day of a month, to ensure good luck for the remaining days.
🍀 Read a book with a title that includes a double OO or two words that are the same OR read book originally published on the first day of any month (share publication date).
9. Other Lucky Animals
Animals are a common good luck symbol across many cultures. The famous Maneki Neko cat statue of Japan, characterized by its waving or "beckoning" paw, is believed to bring prosperity to shop owners and households. The Chinese Jin Chan, or “Money Toad”, sits on a pile of money and brings with it success, wealth and prosperity. In Germany, pigs are considered lucky and are given as tokens to wish friends and family a happy and lucky New Year. Elephants are a common good luck symbol across Asia, symbolizing wisdom, power, strength, and stability. Even insects have their lucky co-partners. Crickets, ladybugs and scarabs have been considered lucky for centuries.
🍀 Read a book tagged ANIMALS on its GR Homepage OR read a book where an animal plays an important role in the story line (briefly share how).
