Travel Trivia: Belgium Pumpkin Race
November 1, 2023 to Completion
6/6 Tasks
7/7 Spell Out
For our first challenge we hear about an unusual race that recently occurred in Kasterlee, Belgium.
1. A small Belgian town hosts one of Europe's most bizarre festivals every October. The Annual Pumpkin Regatta has hundreds of people hopping into giant pumpkins to race the river.
✱ Read a book set in a small town OR read a book that mentions a festival, race or regatta in the text (share text).-p.43-The Cricket on the Hearth-"For the better gracing of this place at the high festival..." 1/4/23
2. The pumpkins are grown in the little town of Kasterlee by the Pompoengenootschap or Pumpkin Society. Their aim is “to grow the world's largest pumpkins,” according to its president. The race actually began after the town decided they needed to find a different use for their 400 kg (880 lb) pumpkins, besides turning them into soup.
✱ Read a book with an orange cover or one that features a pumpkin (post cover) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in KASTERLEE.- How to Be Happy, Dammit: A Cynic's Guide to Spiritual Happiness by Karen Salmansohn-2/15/24
3. Organizers prepare the pumpkin boats early in the morning by cutting each giant squash open, hollowing it out, then tossing it into the river. This year 90 teams, comprising of four people each, paddled their way to the finish line.
✱ Read a series book #4 or read a book with a page count that includes a 9 AND 0 (post page count).-290p.- Death by Water by Kerry Greenwood-1/24/24
4. Racing in this unusual water craft is no joke, and takes some skill. Getting the pumpkin to move forward is often quite tricky, as it has a tendency to spin in one place. Also, the inside of the pumpkin is very sticky and oily, which requires patience.
✱ Read a book that required some patience to finish OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in STICKY (use or ignore A, An or The).- She: A History of Adventure by H. Rider Haggard-11/12/23 -
5. This annual event began in 2008 and now attracts thousands of competitors, supporters, and curious onlookers, many coming from different countries.

6. This is not the only pumpkin race of its kind in the world. Both the US states of Oregon and Vermont, along with the town of Windsor in Nova Scotia (CAN), host their own pumpkin regattas that include a water race via pumpkin boat.
✱ Read a book set in either Vermont, Oregon or Canada (tell us where) or read a book where the MC rides in some kind of boat or water craft (briefly share details). The three main characters, the Beaudalaire orphans, get rescued by a submarine and ride it through the Stricken Stream in The Grim Grotto by Lemony Snicket-12/17/23

Holiday Songs
1. India: Happy Diwali
Diwali is a Hindu festival of lights that is celebrated in India on the first day of the lunar month Kartika, which occurs in the month of October or November. The lights of the festival symbolize the victory of good over evil within every human being. It is a time of devotion, vows of sacrifice, and introspection. The song Happy Diwali became popular in the film Home Delivery: Aapko … Ghar Tak, a classic Bollywood comedy. It continues to be among the most popular songs played over the airways during these two months.

♫♪ Read a book with a light source on the cover (post cover) OR read a book set in India or one that has a character of Indian descent (tell us where or who).
2. Israel: Ner Li
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that lasts for eight days and nights. It takes place on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, landing sometime between November and December in the Gregorian calendar. Ner Li or “I Have a Candle,” is a simple Hanukkah song that is popular in Israel and speaks about how the Hanukkah candles spread light. Our version is sung by the Boys Town Jerusalem Choir and the video shows how the boys in the choir spread light in small ways. Link: https://youtu.be/PMZMn_uRMM8?si=C1fTY...
♫♪ Read a series book #8 OR read a book with a page count that includes a 2 or 5 (share page count).
3. Sweden: Sankta Lucia
Saint Lucia’s Day is a festival of lights celebrated in Sweden and in the Swedish-speaking areas of Finland and Norway. It occurs every year on December 13th in honor of St. Lucia, one of the earliest Christian martyrs, who was killed by the Romans in 304 CE because of her religious beliefs. The town's chosen Lucia brings light and sustenance to the people, wearing her crown of candles. She is accompanied by a choir of young girls all dressed in white with red sashes, singing Sankta Lucia. Let's watch one celebration from the town of Mora, Sweden. Link: https://youtu.be/cw5NmXkXjlY?si=IEe_-...
♫♪ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in LUCIA (share name) OR read a book where religion is important to the plot (tell us how).
4. Austria: Stille Nacht
One of the most popular Christmas songs in the world has its origins in Austria and it is guaranteed you will hear it there during the holidays. As the story goes, Joseph Mohr, a young Austrian priest, wrote the lyrics in 1816 as a simple poem. The next year, he asked his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, a church choir director and organist in Salzburg, to write music for the lyrics. On Christmas Eve in 1818, the friends sang Stille Nacht or “Silent Night” together for the first time in front of Mohr’s congregation, with Mohr playing his guitar. The composition has been translated into more than 300 languages and is sung world wide. Our version is performed by the Vienna Boys Choir. Link: https://youtu.be/vKvKMgR8H7k?si=r3lg9...
♫♪ Read a book with the word NIGHT in the title (midnight will also be accepted) OR read a popular book that everyone is talking about.
5. Italy: Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle
This is perhaps the oldest song in our challenge and no Christmas in Italy is complete without it. Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle was written in 1732 by a Neapolitan priest, Saint Alfonso Liguori, in the musical style of a pastorale. Liguori originally gave the song the title, “Little Song to Child Jesus,” but it has since become known by its first line, “From Starry Skies Descending". Let's hear Andrea Bocelli share his love for this beloved Christmas Carol. Link: https://youtu.be/68mCdwb4A3k?si=S5fo_...
♫♪ Read one of the oldest published book on your TBR (share publication date) OR read a book written by one of your most beloved authors.
6. France: Petit Papa Noël
This fun little song is an absolute classic in France during Christmas. Petit Papa Noël was recorded in 1946 by singer Tino Rossi for the film Destins. After being released, it sold more than 30 million copies around the world. Everyone in France (or of French descent) can sing this light-hearted carol that narrates the expectations of a little boy for the arrival of Papa Noël (or Santa Claus). Let’s listen to the original artist, Tino Rossi, share this classic. Link: https://youtu.be/o7H7ZzbVCic?si=ascMy...
♫♪ Read a book tagged CLASSIC on its GR Homepage OR read a book that mentions SANTA CLAUS in the text (share text).
7. Venezuela: Mi Burrito Sabanero
If you grew up in Latin America, chances are you know this quintessential Venezuelan Christmas song about a little donkey named Burrito who travels to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus. Traditionally sung by children, the catchy Latin rhythm will make you get up and dance. It’s the perfect choice to liven up any holiday party. Take a listen, but I’m warning you, it’s near impossible to get it out of your head after hearing it. Link: https://youtu.be/lJawRaON8h0?si=Sesw6...
♫♪ Read a book that prominently features children in its plot (tell us how) OR read a book with a "catchy" title.
8. Australia: Aussie Jingle Bells
Christmas happens during the Australian summer, so Santa is not dashing through the snow, but rather through the Australia bush. This down-under twist on Jingle Bells is a favorite in the Southern Hemisphere for the holidays. Grab your flip-flops, coolers, and BBQ for this Aussie-style Christmas song performed by Colin Buchanan and Greg Champion from their holiday album Aussie Christmas with Bucko and Champs. Here's the original video clip. Link: https://youtu.be/OnJ8jsw4BSo?si=CbDZT...
♫♪ Read a book with a "summer scene" on the cover (post cover) OR read a book set in the Southern Hemisphere (tell us where) .
9. Philippines: Ang Pasko ay Sumapit
This popular Christmas song from the Philippines was written by Levi Celerio, a 20th century composer and lyricist, who was named National Artist of the Philippines for Music. In addition to its energetic melody, it shares a simple, yet very appropriate message for our time: to love one another, following the golden rule, even when it is not Christmas. The following link takes you to one of the most popular versions of the song. Link: https://youtu.be/s9im0xT-a5o?si=ASQjs...
♫♪ Read a book with an important character that is a musician (tell us who) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in LEVI CELERIO.
10. Spain: Un Año Más
A popular holiday song heard on the airways in Spain references the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, one of the best-known and busiest public squares in the city. The square is home to the famous clock of the Real Casa de Correos, and New Year’s revelers gather there to eat Las Doce Uvas de la Suerte (12 grapes of luck) with each toll of the bell at midnight. It was first recorded in 1988 by the Spanish pop group, Mecano. Link: https://youtu.be/STnpL1COEyI?si=geED_...
♫♪ Read a book that includes a New Year's celebration (briefly describe details) OR read a book set in a famous large city (tell us where).

A-Z Challenge: Characters Edition
Read a book from the combined 1001 book lists with a book character's name that fits for each letter of the alphabet. Each character name must be a proper noun and begin with that letter of the alphabet. It is not necessary for the character to be the main protagonist. The character's name does not need to appear in the book's title. The character you use also does not need to be human (i.e. you may use the name of a pet). You may use either the character's first or last name to fulfill the requirement. Titles such as Mrs. Doubtfire for 'M' or Colonel Sanders for 'C', etc. are acceptable if that is how the character is mainly referred to in the book. This challenge does not need to be done in any particular order. *****Try to limit yourself to no more than two names per book.****
Here are some examples using non-1001 books:
A: Anne in Anne of Green Gables
B: Buckbeak in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (animal example)
C: Cullen, Edward in Twilight (last name example)
D: Doctor Dolittle in The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (title example)

Landmarks of the World: Mount Fuji
December 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024
9/9
Tasks
1. Location: Mount Fuji, or Fuji-san as the Japanese call it, is located on Japan’s largest island of Honshu. It sits just 62 miles (100 km) southwest of Tokyo and, on clear days, it can actually be seen from the capital. The mountain borders both the Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures and forms the principal feature within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
*Read a book set in Japan or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in FUJISAN (ignore A, An or The).- The Fugitive by Marcel Proust-1/30/24
2. Height: Fuji is the highest mountain in the country, standing at 12,388 feet (3776 meters). Unlike other famous high-elevation mountains in the world, it is not part of a large mountain range, but stands alone, in all its magnificence. Often portrayed in art and literature, its striking beauty has made it one of the most recognizable mountains in the world. In 2013, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
*Read a book with over 12,388 RATINGS on its GR Homepage (share number of ratings at time of reading) over 123,000 ratings- The Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket-12/1/23-
or read a book originally published in 2013 (share publication date)
3. Volcano: Mount Fuji is classed as an active volcano. The last eruption took place in 1707 and lasted for 16 days, with volcanic ash reaching as far as Tokyo. Volcanic activity is also responsible for creating the five lakes at the mountain's base, and numerous caves near Aokigahara Forest. The area is blessed with many mineral-rich hot springs, making the region a paradise for both outdoor recreation and relaxation.
*Read a series book #5 - #5 in the Remembrance of Lost Time series- The Prisoner by Marcel Proust-12/4/23
or read a book with the word VOLCANO found in the text (share phrase).
4. Name: The origins of the mountain’s name have been debated for thousands of years. Some believe it came from the 9th century Japanese folk story, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, where an "elixir of life" is burned at the mountain’s peak. It was given the name fushi which means “not death” or “immortal”. Another proposed etymology is that it’s derived from the word for “fire” or fuchi used by the indigenous Ainu people, which comes from the name of the fire goddess, Fuuchi-Kamuy. The Japanese kanji (or character writing) for Fuji-san currently means “wealth” and “man of status”.
*Read a book with a name (proper noun) in the title- Colonel Sun by Robert Markham-12/20/23- ( Kinglsey Amis) -12/20/23
or read a book by an author whose first or last name begins with F.
5. Holy Mountain: Over the centuries, the Japanese have forged a spiritual bond with the mountain, and today Mount Fuji is considered one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains. Its significance began with the Shinto religion who believed a deity lived in the crater. Pilgrimages were made to the crater in honor of this deity. Organizations began to support the increasing number of pilgrims on the mountain, establishing designated trails, creating shrines, rock monuments, and building overnight huts for their use.
*Read a book where religion is important to the plot (tell us how) - The entire book is about a search for the truth of the Knights Templar- the religious group that supposedly holds the secrets of the world in -Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco-2/14/24
or read a book where the MC takes a personal or spiritual journey of some sort (briefly share details).
6. Climbing: Climbing this majestic peak is now popular with visitors from around the world. In fact, Mount Fuji is considered the most climbed mountain on earth with 300,000 people climbing it each year. What makes this even more impressive is that the official hiking season only lasts 2 to 3 months. An interesting fact: women were forbidden from climbing the mountain until 1912. Though many managed to find ways around the ban, usually disguising themselves as men.
*Read a book found on this GR List: Best Banned, Censored, and Challenged Books- The Pearl by John Steinbeck- 4/11/24
or read a book written by a woman whose published name hides her gender (i.e. male pen-name or name with initials).
7. Trails: Today, all are welcome to hit one of four main trails leading to the summit. Each route has rest stations along the way. The most popular and accessible is the Yoshida Trail, which was also the original pilgrimage path. Depending on your trail choice, it will take 5 to 10 hours to reach the summit, with another 3 to 4 hours for the descent. Most hikers choose to tackle the trail in two days, staying at one of the available mountain huts. Doing this allows you to pace yourself, helping to prevent altitude sickness. Hut reservations are a must!
*Read a book you had to reserve or put on hold at the library- The Wayward Bus by John Steinbeck-12/24/23
or read a book with a 4 in the total page count (share page count).
8. Goraiko: Viewing the sunrise from the top of the mountain is a popular objective. In fact, the experience has its own name and is called Goraiko. Besides being a spectacular view, it is considered very lucky to see the sun rising above the clouds from Fuji-san’s crater. Commemorate your accomplishment by sending a postcard to yourself or family from the tiny post office that sits atop the mountain.
*Read a book with a sunrise or sunset on the cover (post cover) or read a book where a letter, package or postcard is mailed/received through the postal service (briefly share details).-The MC, Charles, writes a letter by hand to his childhood sweetheart who he has just found decades later at p. 203 in The Sea, the Sea
9. Alternative Access: If you are not physically able, or don't have the time to trek to the summit, there is a paved scenic toll road called the Fuji Subaru Line that will take you to the fifth station on the mountain. Sitting at an elevation of 7,562 feet (2,305 meters), this is the largest station with services that include shops, restaurants, restrooms, and a viewing platform that offers a spectacular view of the summit. This road is also very popular with cyclists.
*Read a book where the MC rides a bike or takes a scenic trip in a car (briefly share details)-Serge Storms starts a tourist trip riding people around Miami .... with crazy results in Cadillac Beach by Tim Dorsey-5/20/24
or read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in FUJI SUBARU LINE (3 word minimum).

If you have a list (even if incomplete) of what you plan to read for the challenge post it here. You can edit it as time goes on if you need to. That way we can see what others are planning for their year. Don't worry if you haven't picked your books yet, either. Some people are planning all books in advance, some aren't. Do what is right for you to have fun with this challenge.
As you finish a book you can either put a * or a √ next to it to show how many you've read so far. To get a checkmark on a PC hold the Alt key and type 251. On a Mac hold the Option key and type "V". You can also copy and paste the checkmarks I've made √ √ ✔
To do strikethrough text like this you type this first < s > then the text you'd like a line through then this < /s > but take out the spaces.
Tip from the mods: (browser only, unfortunately) once you're done posting, click on the date/time in the upper right hand corner of your post, then bookmark it to easily get back to your post.
I have put both lists onto one post to simplify things for those doing both. If you are only doing the 40 books on the regular list you don’t have to copy over the 10 advanced prompts.
