Healthy Habits the Global Way
January 1, 2024 - March 31. 2024
9/9
1. Spain: Take a Siesta
Wander around the streets of Spain in the mid-afternoon and you’ll likely find that most shops are closed. That’s because the country still values the midday nap, called a siesta. Obviously getting some extra zzz’s can make you feel more rested, but there are other physical health benefits, including better heart function, hormonal maintenance, and cell repair. Plus the downtime has mental health advantages: a 40 minute nap can improve performance by 34 percent and alertness by 100 percent. Even a 20 minute slumber has been shown to boost mood.
* Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SIESTA (ignore A, An or The) - The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch-1/4/24
OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in SPAIN (tell us where).
2. Greece: Eat Your Veggies
While the Mediterranean diet of whole grains, beans, nuts, fruits, and vegetables gets much of the hype, the healthy eating habit of the Greeks is actually much simpler than that: Eat your veggies -and a lot of them. Greeks ingest the highest amount of veggies in the world per capita. In fact, just one meal can include up to four servings. And since many are packed with dietary fiber, they help the body run in tip-top shape. As an added bonus, vegetable-based diets have been shown to help lose weight.
* Read a book with a vegetable on the cover (post cover) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in GREECE (tell us where).- Guy Mannering by Walter Scott-2/18/24
3. Finland: Relax in a Sauna
There are an estimated 2 million saunas in Finland, a country of only 5 million people. This ratio proves just how important getting a good sweat is for the Finns. Many Finnish homes (including apartments) have their own saunas. Local etiquette says to take off your clothes, shower, and then sit in the sauna for as long as you’re comfortable, repeating the process until you feel renewed. They are definitely onto something since the steam makes the heart pump more blood to the skin, leading to a healthier glow and a stronger heart.
* Read a series book #2 or #5 OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in FINLAND (tell us where).-London- The Big Four by Agatha Christie- 2/2/24
4. India: Spice Up Your Meals
India's flavorful cuisine makes use of a large array of native spices, which actually have a number of health benefits. Cumin is packed with iron and has been associated with weight loss, while turmeric contains antioxidants to ease pain and inflammation. Ginger has similar anti-inflammatory properties and can calm an upset stomach, while nutmeg has been shown to fight off bacteria. All three are often used in curry sauces, while turmeric is used in pickles and chutney. Meanwhile, saffron has a long laundry list of benefits, including treating depression. Perhaps it’s worth spicing up your next meal with one of these beneficial spices.
* Read a book that mentions one of the above spices (cumin, turmeric, ginger, nutmeg, saffron) in the text (share text) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in INDIA (tell us where).-Australia- Murder in the Dark by Kerry Greenwood- 2/8/24
5. Paraguay: Focus on the Positives
Since 2015, Paraguay has topped the Gallup Global Emotions Report as the most positive nation on the planet. The South American nation embraces the idea of tranquilo pa, which is a combination of the Spanish word for tranquility and pa from their native language of Guaraní. The term connotes a laid-back approach to life. Additionally, their language has no word for “tomorrow," helping them to "live in the moment," not worrying about the future. This more positive way of being has major physical benefits, leading to a greater resistance to the common cold, better cardiovascular health, and an increased life span.
* Read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in TRANQUILO PA OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in PARAGUAY (tell us where).- Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies by Alastair Bonnett-3/5/24
6. France: Ignore Your Email After Hours
The incessant need to check work email after hours is curbed by the government in France, which passed a 2017 labor law that gives employees the “right to disconnect.” Adopting this habit isn’t just about work-life balance; it has positive mental health benefits as well. This expectation to check email around the clock has been shown to cause anxiety, adversely effecting the health of the employee, as well as their families since they’re not fully present. So step away from the computer, put down the phone, relax and enjoy your family and friends - emails can wait until tomorrow!
* Read a book originally published in 2017 (share publication date) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in FRANCE (tell us where).-England- -The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens- 2/1/24
7. Japan: Make Meal Portions Pleasurable
Those dainty bento boxes aren’t just for presentation, although the Japanese sure do have a way with visually-stimulating food. They’re also about keeping food portions small. And instead of devouring meals quickly, they take the time to mindfully chew and enjoy every bite. In fact, only 16 percent of Japanese eat out once a week or more, so that they can better control what they eat. Thanks to this healthier diet and lifestyle, they live longer and healthier than everyone else on Earth. Indeed, the country’s life expectancy is 81 years for men and 87 for women, compared to the global average of 72 years, according to the World Health Organization.
* Read a book with a main character who is 80 years or older OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in JAPAN (tell us where).-Paris- The Fugitive by Marcel Proust-1/30/24
8. Sweden: The Fika Coffee Break
Coffee breaks in Sweden are unlike anywhere else. Workplaces encourage their employees to fika, which involves taking a leisurely coffee break with friends or family to unwind from work. The word originated as a noun for a coffee break, but its popularity has seen it adopted as a verb for the act of taking coffee breaks. Now, to take a coffee break is to fika. This is often enjoyed outside or in a café, and can commonly be found accompanied by fikabrod, a sweet pastry to complement your coffee. While this sounds like an employer’s nightmare, many workplaces in Sweden actually mandate it since it is believed to boost productivity, reduce fatigue and improve memory.
* Read a book where all the letter of FIKA (any order) can be found in the title OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in SWEDEN (tell us where).-England- The Crow Trap by Cleeves, Ann -1/23/24-
9. Thailand: Therapuetic Massage
Thailand’s long history with massages began over 2,500 years ago. Buddhist monks are widely credited as having developed the practice. Unlike most Western massage, Thai massage focuses on healing, rather than relaxation, and is defined by compressing, pulling, and stretching the body with no oils or rubs. Their technique releases muscle tension, improves blood circulation, and boosts the immune system, as well as lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Seek out a Thai masseuse and get healthier!
* Read a book with over 2500 ratings on its GR Homepage OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in THAILAND (tell us where).-New Zealand- Death by Water by Kerry Greenwood-1/10/24

9/9
Trail and Tasks
1. Track's Sign
The route is marked at regular intervals by triangular signs, most of which have the symbol of the Wagyl, or Rainbow Serpent, a mythological creature of the arboreal culture which takes different names among the various populations. Wagyl is the name used by the Noongar. It owes its name to the fact that it reveals itself to the indigenous population as a rainbow that moves through rain and waters, shaping landscapes, and punishing or rewarding people. In short, it is a powerful creature that can be creative, but also dangerous.
✱ Read a book with a triangular object on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a dangerous character (tell us who) OR

✔ 2. Start: Kalamunda
The track starts at Kalamunda, an eastern suburb of the city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Before starting the trail, be sure to visit this bustling city which is known for its sunny beaches. An important nesting area has been identified near Kalamunda in the Mundaring-Kalamunda Important Bird Area, which is adjacent to the Beelu National Park. It is worth dedicating yourself to some birdwatching, knowing that two species of black cockatoos, a bird similar to the parrot, are widespread here.

✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MUNDARING-KALAMUNDA IMPORTANT BIRD AREA (3 word minimum).
3. The Darling Range
This is the longest section of the trail (211 km or 131 mi) spanning the two towns of Kalamunda and Dwellingup. For much of the route you travel along the Darling Range, crossing eucalyptus forests that feature over 700 different species of these tree, with karri, wandoo and jarrah being the most prevalent. You also have the opportunity to see the Mundaring Weir, a dam dating back to the late 1940's. The dam is subject to overflows, the last of which was in 1996. We will use the dam to cross the Helena River.
✱ Read a book with more than 700 reviews on its GR homepage (share number) OR
✱ Read a book with the word DARLING or RIVER in its title OR
✱ Read a book published in the 20th century (tell us when).-pub. 1927- The Big Four by Agatha Christie- 2/2/24
4. From Dwellingup to Balingup
After leaving the mining town of Dwellingup (one of the largest bauxite mines in the world is located nearby), you come across the Lane Poole Reserve. Created in 1990 by merging six previous reserves, it protects native forests and woodlands, as well as a part of the Murray River, one of the few rivers that have not been dammed in this part of Australia. Hikers take advantage of this waterway, which at times can be traveled by canoe or kayak, but many will be attracted by the waterfalls and rock pools that characterize it.
✱ Read a series book #6 OR
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in LANE POOLE-Phryne Fisher in Murder in the Dark by Kerry Greenwood- 2/8/24-

5. From Balingup to Pemberton
The Balingup area is known for the production of fruit and vegetables. This section travels through both well-developed agricultural areas, and protected areas. One such is the Greater Beedelup National Park, whose main attraction is the Beedelup Falls. During this part of the route you will notice several imposing trees, and upon reaching Pemberton, you will even have the opportunity to climb one of the two karri trees present: the Gloucester Tree and the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree. Both are more than 60 m (200 ft) tall, and have metal rungs that allow visitors to climb to the constructed lookouts at the top. A third tree, the Diamond Tree, was closed to climbing in 2019.
✱ Read a book set on a farm OR
✱ Read a book with one or more trees on the cover (post cover)- -Mona of the Manor by Armistead - [bookcover:Mona of the ManorMaupin|10022]-6/11/24
OR
✱ Read a book where a character goes climbing (briefly share details).
6. From Pemberton to Walpole
In this section, 110 km (68 mi) long, you will finally reach the ocean after hiking through a forested area that was hit by the worst bushfire in Western Australia in 2015. The culmination of this stretch is represented by the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, which owes its name to the French admiral who first arrived here. The park covers approximately 130 km (81 mi) of coastline between Augusta and Walpole and is characterized by white beaches, rugged coastal cliffs and towering forests.
✱ Read a book where a fire occurs or one with a character that is a fireman (tell us which) OR
✱ Read a book published in 2015 OR
✱ Read a book with a page count that includes a 1, 3 or 0 (share page count).-181p.- Secrets of the Kashmir Valley by Farhana Qazi-2/14/24
7. From Walpole to Albany

Be sure to take advantage of the Tree Top Walk which takes you to a height of 40 m (131 ft), among the treetops. You will also cross two other parks: William Bay NP, where the Elephant Rocks (large granite boulders) create a kind of protected swimming pool much appreciated by children, and West Cape Howe NP, which is practically on the doorstep of your final destination.

8. Arrival: Albany
The final destination of this hike is the port city of Albany. Founded in 1826, the city retains several ancient buildings, almost all of which can be visited. Of course, the city is also known for its beaches, but be careful because many people have drowned here due to the huge waves that are capable of dragging a person off the rocks. But to end in a more pleasant way, know that you are also in a popular wine-growing area, so a good glass of local wine would be an excellent way to celebrate the end of your journey!
✱ Read a book set in the 19th century (tell us when) OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR homepage -Historical- Guy Mannering by Walter Scott-2/18/24-
OR
✱ Read a book where drowning is mentioned (share text).
9. Munda Biddi Trail: A Cycling Alternative
The Munda Biddi Trail runs almost parallel to the Bibbulmun Track. Completed in April 2013, this route runs from Mundaring (another Perth suburb) to Albany, and is the longest off-road cycle path in the world. “Munda Biddi” means “path through the forest” in the Aboriginal Noongar language. Here too the route is marked by yellow triangles, but the image is obviously different. The cylcing path requires the use of a mountain bike, and it is not recommended to ride it during the summer.
✱ Read a book where a character rides a bicycle (tell us who)-Sabines rides the green bicycle of the title-p.186-"Sabine was upright on the bike, her toes barely touching the ground." The White Woman on the Green Bicycle by Monique Roffey-6/12/24
OR

Landmarks of the World: The Sydney Opera House
March 1, 2024 - May 31, 2024
7/7
1. Location
The Sydney Opera House is a performing arts center located on the harbor in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in October 2023 and remains one of the most recognizable buildings in the world.
*Read a book where art or music is important to the plot (tell us how) OR read a book with a page count that includes a 5 or 0 (share page count)-160 p.- -Life's Little Instruction Book: 511 Suggestions, Observations, and Reminders on How to Live a Happy and Rewarding Life by H. Jackson Brown Jr.-3/1/24
2. Design Competition
The Opera House was born out of a 1956 international competition run by the New South Wales government to find the best design for their ambitious project. There were 233 designs submitted and Jørn Utzon from Denmark was chosen as the winner, receiving ₤5000 for his design.
*Read a book by an author whose initials can be found in JORN UTZON OR read a book with over 5000 ratings on its GR Homepage (share number of ratings). over 108,000 ratings- The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket-3/18/24-
3. Architecture
Its renowned sail-shaped design broke new ground for architecture and engineering globally. Its iconic roof was a definite challenge to create. Utzon and his team had to experiment with many different techniques settling on spherical geometry, using over one million self-cleaning tiles, a first for 20th century architecture. The building also employs an innovative cooling system that harnesses seawater directly from the harbor. This eco-friendly approach significantly diminishes the building's dependence on electricity, resulting in a reduced overall carbon footprint.
*Read a book with an impressive building on the cover (post cover) - The Crime at Black Dudley by Margery Allingham-7/14/25- The Crime at Black Dudley
OR read a book with a character that is an architect, engineer, or works in the field of construction (tell us who).
4. Construction & Cost
Construction began on March 1, 1959 and was expected to take four years. However, the building was not completed until 14 years later and involved over 10,000 workers. The cost of the building was largely paid for by a State Lottery and ballooned from the estimated 7 million dollars to 102 million dollars.
*Read a series book #1, #4 or #14 -series#1- No Filter by Heather Day Gilbert-5/15/24
OR read a book published in the month of March of any year (share publication date).
5. Opening Performances
This notable arts center's first performance actually happened long before it opened. In 1960, renowned singer, Paul Robeson, climbed the scaffolding and sang Ol' Man River to the construction workers as they ate lunch. A month before its "official" opening, the Australian Opera performed the center's first production: Prokofiev’s epic War and Peace. The formal opening took place on October 20, 1973, and was officiated by Queen Elizabeth II. It was globally televised, included fireworks and a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Since then, the Opera House has hosted over 118,000 performances!
*Read a book where the MC attends a performance of some kind (briefly share details) OR read a book in which the first letter of every word in the title is found in QUEEN ELIZABETH (2 word minimum).- The End by Lemony Snicket-4/3/24-
6. Visitors
The Sydney Opera House welcomes nearly 11 million visitors annually. It is free to enter the foyer or visit the gift shop, and tours are offered that explore the building’s architecture and take you backstage. The Opera House contributes an estimated $775 million dollars to the Australian economy through tourism and cultural events each year. It is definitely one of the most popular tourist attractions on the continent.
