Landmarks of the World - The Great Sphinx of Giza
September 1, 2024 - November 30, 2024
0/8
1. Location
This awe-inspiring landmark stands on the Giza Plateau located on the west bank of the Nile in Egypt. Along with the nearby Great Pyramids, it attracts millions of visitors from around the world who come to marvel at its grandeur. Facing directly towards the east, it is positioned perfectly for the rising of the sun on the day of the spring equinox. Others say it was aligned to face the constellation of Leo. Either alignment shows the ancient Egyptians’ intricate understanding of astronomy.
*Read a book with the sun pictured on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that has one of the following words in its title: GREAT, EAST, SUN, or SPRING.
2. History & Excavation
The early history of The Great Sphinx has puzzled historians for centuries. But archaeological evidence suggests that it was created around 2500 BCE for the pharaoh Khafre, the builder of the Second Pyramid at Giza. Buried under layers of sand for many centuries, its head was uncovered during Graeco-Roman times. The first modern archaeological dig occurred in 1817, supervised by the Italian explorer and Egyptologist, Giovanni Battista Caviglia. He uncovered the Sphinx's chest completely, revealing its complete form to the world.
*Read a book with over 2500 reviews on its GR homepage OR read a book with TWO of the following numbers found in its total page count: 1, 8, 1, 7 (share page count).
3. Size and Construction
This incredible statue has the distinction of being the world's largest monolithic sculpture ever carved from a single piece of stone. Made of limestone bedrock from the same quarry that provided the stone for the pyramids, it measures 240 ft (73 m) long and 66 ft (20 m) high. The front paws were built from separate blocks of limestone. Some estimate that it took hundreds of workers at least three years to finish the sphinx using nothing more than stone hammers and copper chisels.
*Read a stand alone book OR read a book with a character who works in a field that uses hand tools (tell us who).
4. Representation
The Great Sphinx depicts a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, prominent in Egyptian, Asian and Greek mythology. The Egyptian sphinx is depicted as a male with a Pharaoh headdress, believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, with the lion body symbolizing his strength and power. This is different than the Asian and Greek sphinx, which is usually female and includes the addition of eagle wings.
*Read a book that mentions a mythological creature (share text) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in THE GREAT SPHINX.
5. Appearance
It was not always the dull sandstone color we see today. Evidence suggests that the sphinx was once painted in vibrant colors, emphasizing its regal appearance. Its famous missing nose has led to numerous explanations and legends. Contrary to popular belief, Napoleon's cannonballs were not responsible. A series of 18th-century drawings suggests the disappearance of the nose happened long before that.
*Read a book with a vibrantly colored cover (post cover) OR read a book with all the letters of NOSE found in the title (any order).
6. Purpose
Despite extensive research and speculation, historians and archaeologists have yet to uncover the true purpose of the sphinx. Being positioned in front of the three largest pyramids in Giza leads to the belief that it served as a protective guardian for these ancient structures. Its imposing presence may have been intended to ward off evil spirits or serve as a symbol of royal power and authority. Or it may have simply been built to honor the pharaoh, whom they believe was responsible for its creation. It's original purpose may never be known.
*Read a series book #3 OR read a book where someone "protected" an important character is some way (tell us how).
7. Secrets Beneath
Nestled between the paws of the statue lies the Sphinx Temple, a small chamber dedicated to the worship of the sun god Ra. It most likely played a vital role in religious ceremonies during the time of the pharaohs and could even be the secret behind its purpose. But for centuries, people have speculated that there are other hidden chambers and passages beneath this great structure that have not been discovered or explored. If so, maybe they hold hidden treasures that would unravel more secrets about the sphinx and ancient Egyptian civilization.
*Read a book where a secret or something hidden is important to the plot (briefly share details) OR read a book tagged MYSTERY on its GR homepage.
8. National Pride
This monumental landmark continues to captivate the world with its grandeur and mystery. It holds a significant place in the hearts of Egyptians, standing as a testament to the extraordinary achievements of the their people. It is a source of pride and an iconic symbol of their ancient heritage and cultural legacy. It is this historical significance that contributed to the Giza Plateau, including both its sphinx and pyramids, being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
*Read a book set in Egypt (tell us where) OR read a book that explores the theme of heritage or national pride in some way (tell us how)

Countries of the World #3 – Solomon Islands
See- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Duration: Oct 01, 2024 - Oct 31, 2024
Completed: 0/6+
Also known as the Solomons, a country consisting of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Melanesia, part of Oceania.
🚩Read a book whose title starts with a letter in SOLOMONISLANDS (ignore A, An and The or equivalent if not English).
Stats
- Capital: Honiara
🚩Read a book whose author's first and last initials are in the word HONIARA (letters can only be used as many times as they appear in the word).
- Population: 721,956 (2019 census)
🚩Read a book whose total number of pages contain at least 2 of the numbers in the population (tell us the page count).
- Area: 11,157 sq mi
🚩Read a book whose year it was first published has at least 2 of the numbers in the area (tell us the year published).
Trivia
1. The people of Munda in Solomon Islands believe that each village in the country has a shark to protect it, and all the sharks live in one cave called The Cave of the Custom (Kastom) Shark. The cave is real and is home to pygmy seahorses, the smallest type of seahorse on the planet.
🚩Read a book in which a significant scene takes place in a cave -or- read a book whose cover shows a real or imaginary sea creature (post the cover).
2. Savo Island is home to an active, steaming volcano and bubbling hot springs. The heat attracts megapodes, chicken-sized black birds that utilize the warm environment to incubate their eggs. At dawn, the megapodes lay and bury their eggs in the sandy fields around a village called Panueli. The volcanic earth keeps the egg warm, so mother birds can fly off. However, this attracts predators, including the men from the village who harvest eggs for food and income.
🚩Read a book with an intact egg shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which someone hunts, fishes or harvests their own food (tell us who and what they hunt, fish or harvest).
3. Some Solomon Islanders have blond hair due to a genetic variant that is distinct from the gene that leads to blond hair in Europeans. Globally, blond hair is rare, occurring with substantial frequency only in Northern Europe and in Oceania, which includes Solomon Islands. The frequency in Solomon Islands is around 5 to 10 percent, which is about the same as in Northern Europe.
🚩Read a book with human hair shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a nonfiction book about science (bonus for one about genes).
4. Skull Island is a tiny island in the Solomons that is home to a wooden shrine containing the skulls of deceased chiefs and warriors. Traditionally the skulls were worshipped in every village, with a complex hierarchy determining the order of the skulls – with ordinary people at the bottom and the chiefs at the top. Once the missionaries reached Solomon Islands, all the skulls were moved to Skull Island.
🚩Read a book in which a cemetery or gravestone is shown on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book in which a ghost is part of the plot.
5. ꞌAreꞌare is the name of a people from the south of the island of Malaita, which is part of the Solomon Islands. They are known for their complex panpipe music. The panpipes are made with bamboo and have been handcrafted for generations and are made pitch perfect every time.
🚩Read a book with a single quotation mark in the title or subtitle -or- read a book with a pipe shaped object on the cover (post the cover).
6. Tomako or Tomoko was a large war canoe. Tomakos could carry 30-50 warriors and were used in raiding expeditions. They were crescent shaped, with sharply upturned prows and sterns that were decorated with fringes of cowrie shells, nautilus shells and mother of pearl, as well as intricate carvings of spirit animals or warriors. They possessed no sails and were propelled solely by paddling.
🚩Read a book with a small boat on the cover (post the cover) -or- read a book whose cover has a decorative border (post the cover)
