Let's Shop the World
December 1, 2024 - February 28, 2025

1. Milan, Italy
No list of incredible malls would be complete without Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. An architectural masterpiece, it is undoubtedly one of the world’s most beautiful malls. It is also the oldest active shopping gallery in all of Italy and contains some of Milan’s oldest stores and eateries. While your attention will undoubtedly be drawn to the mall’s magnificent glass-domed roof, be sure to also check out the mosaic-clad floor. Part of it depicts a dancing bull, the symbol of the city of Turin. According to legend, those who touch the bull mosaic with their right foot and spin clockwise three times will have good luck.
* Read a series book #3 OR read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage.
2. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Nestled in the heart of downtown Dubai, this iconic mall offers an experience that goes far beyond retail. Of course, it is a shopper’s paradise with over 1,200 stores, including every high-end designer fashion brand you can name. Foodies will find more than 200 food and beverage outlets. But what makes this mall stand out is the impressive flying men waterfall, its Olympic-sized skating rink, and its Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. It's no wonder this mall holds the title of being the most visited place on Earth in 2023.
* Read a book with over 1,200 ratings on its GR Homepage (share number) OR read a book published in 2023 (share publication date).
3. Minnesota, USA
The Mall of America is the largest mall in the US. Located in Bloomington, Minnesota, it spans over a massive 2.8 million square feet and is home to more than 500 stores. The mall is built around a seven-acre indoor amusement park that features a Ferris wheel and thrilling roller coasters. The mall also features an aquarium, mini golf facilities, a comedy club, numerous nightclubs, and even a wedding chapel. With so much on offer, the mall appeals to all kinds of visitors.
* Read a book with a title that includes the word OF OR read a book you thought was particularly thrilling (briefly share why; use spoiler if needed).
4. Berlin, Germany
Checking out the holiday decorations at the mall has always been a favorite activity. The Potsdamer Platz in Berlin has taken this to a new level. Their Winterwelt (Winter World) includes incredible decorations and light displays, an actual toboggan run, and a cozy Christmas market featuring mulled wine and arts and crafts. If that's not enough, the mall is also home to the Legoland Discovery Center, a true paradise for all Lego fans.
* Read a book set completely in winter OR read a book by an author whose initials can be found in LEGOLAND.
5. Malmö, Sweden
Cosmopolitan Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city, and though it has loads of historic charm, it also embraces modernity. The Emporia Shopping Center is the work of Swedish architectural firm Wingårdhs, whose unusual design sets this mall apart. The firm says it was first and foremost an urban planning project in which offices, housing, and retail come together in a mixed-use development. The entrance, made from panes of amber-hued glass, is styled as a plunging chasm and makes a jaw-dropping first impression. The interior is equally stylish, utilizing bold colors to help shoppers navigate each atrium. Over 1 million-plus square feet and three levels, they’ll find more than 200 stores and restaurants to choose from.
* Read a book with an amber-hued cover (post cover) OR read a book with an unusual plot device or twist (briefly share what; use spoilers if needed).
6. Seoul, Korea
The bustling city of Seoul is where you’ll find the Lotte World Mall, known for its stunning architecture and vast array of shopping and entertainment options. With a whopping 2.3 million square feet of retail space, the mall has a movie theater, aquarium, amusement park, bowling alley, a sports center with a swimming pool, an indoor ice rink, and a concert performance hall. Of particular interest is the Lotte World Folk Museum, where you can learn about the history and traditional heritage of Korea. Its tower is the sixth tallest building in the world and contains galleries, cafés, and a luxury hotel, in addition to a skywalk and an observation deck. It is one of the best spots to appreciate the breathtaking view of Seoul's vibrant city lights.
* Read a book with both 2 AND 3 found in its total page count (share page count) OR read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in LOTTE (share name).
7. Bengaluru, India
This is the newest mall in our line-up. The Phoenix Mall of Asia opened a year ago on October 27, 2023. It is one of the largest shopping malls in Asia, with over 1 million square feet of retail space. It is home to over 300 retailers, a food court, and nine PVR Cinemas screens. In addition to these offerings, it has a dedicated play area for children with a variety of games and activities and a unique eco-friendly space with natural plants and waterfalls called The Oasis, where visitors can relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the mall. Its opening was a huge success, and for its first holiday season, it included the largest Christmas tree in India, reaching a height of 100 feet.
* Read a book with a title that begins with a letter in PHOENIX OR read a book set in Asia (share location).
8. London, England
Sometimes, a mall is the ideal solution to finding a new tenant for a redundant space, as was the case with Battersea Power Station. This art deco behemoth opened in 1935, and at its peak capacity, it supplied 20% of the city’s energy. It was even featured on the cover of a Pink Floyd album in 1977. As energy sources changed, the station closed in 1983 and for years it sat empty, a historic landmark that Londoners cherished but no one knew quite what to do with. After extensive redevelopment, it opened as an upscale shopping, dining, and entertainment center in 2022. It includes a state-of-the-art cinema, a fitness center, a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the London skyline, and a green and sustainable apartment development. This beautiful building has powered through time to become a shining example of modern architecture and community development.
* Read a book where a renovation or complete transformation takes place (your interpretation; briefly share details) OR read a book tagged CLASSIC on its GR Homepage.

Landmarks of the World: Notre-Dame Cathedral
January 1, 2025 - March 31, 2025
0/7
1. Location
This amazing cathedral is located in Paris, on the eastern half of Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine River. For over three centuries, all roads in France have converged on Notre-Dame de Paris. This is because Emperor Augustus declared it the intersection of all the highways in the Roman Empire. In 1769, King Louis XV officially made it the hub of all the nation's routes, and in 1924 the government decided to make Notre-Dame the point from which mileage distances between towns are officially calculated. The compass rose-shaped stone is still visible in the courtyard of the church.
*Read a book with a road on the cover (post cover) or read a book with a title that begins with a letter in PARIS (ignore A, An or THE).
2. Construction
Constructed over the course of two centuries starting in 1163, Notre Dame was built on the ruins of four previous churches dating from the 4th century. Utilizing a Latin cross design, its flying buttresses were a groundbreaking innovation from the Gothic period, enabling the construction of taller, more slender buildings while also distributing the weight of the structure. This allowed for the installation of expansive stained-glass windows. The awe-inspiring Rose Windows are considered among the finest examples of Gothic stained-glass craftsmanship.
*Read a series book #2 or #4 or read a book by an author whose initials can be found in ROSE WINDOWS.
3. Golden Ratio
The cathedral's grandeur is not just a product of artistic inspiration; it is also the result of careful mathematical precision. Notre-Dame's Gothic design is rooted in the "Golden Ratio," a mathematical concept that produces aesthetically pleasing proportions while aligning with nature’s most harmonious number, Phi (1.618). This "sacred geometry" has been utilized by builders for centuries, with masterpieces such as the Parthenon as another example.
*Read a book where math or numbers are important to the plot (tell us how) or read a book with a page count that includes TWO of the following numbers: 1, 6, 1, 8 (share page count).
4. History
Notre-Dame is not merely a religious site but a vessel of French history. From hosting secular legislative events that birthed France's parliament in the 14th century to being transformed into the Temple of Reason during the French Revolution, it became etched in the people's hearts when it stood as the symbol of the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II. On August 25, 1944, General Charles de Gaulle marched through the liberated capital to the cathedral, where bells rang in celebration of the city’s freedom.
*Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR Homepage or read a book that mentions a famous building in its text (share text).
5. Fire
It was a horrific day for Paris when a catastrophic fire engulfed Notre-Dame on April 15, 2019. It caused extensive damage to the building, including the destruction of its wooden roof and iconic spire. The pipe organs and Rose Windows were luckily not destroyed, and many of the religious relics were saved the day of the fire. But the disaster left the world in shock and mourning, inspiring an outpouring of support and contributions for the cathedral’s restoration, totaling over 900 million dollars.
*Read a book where a catastrophic event occurs (briefly share details) or read a book published in 2019.
6. Restoration
For six years, restoration teams (including carpenters, art restorers, metal workers, stonemasons, and roofers) have been working tirelessly to resurrect this iconic church. Their first task (after securing the building and walls) was to repair the cathedral’s enormous medieval wooden roof and spire. Then the interior work began, the smoke damage to art, windows, and both organs was quite extensive. Even though there is still work to be done on the exterior of the cathedral, the roof and interior restoration has now been completed.
*Read a book with an MC who works in a trade that requires skill with their hands (tell us what) or read the FIRST published book by an author.
7. Reopening
On December 7, 2024, the archbishop of Paris presided over an invitation-only reopening ceremony. The following day, a celebration Mass took place, marking the first time the public was welcomed back inside. The cathedral is now open to the public and its regular daily schedule has resumed, including events and weekly concerts. Over the course of 2025, music will resonate within the cathedral again through organ recitals, and concerts featuring international orchestras and choirs. Tourists from across the globe are thrilled that they can again visit and experience this architectural marvel.
*Read a book added to your TBR AFTER December 7, 2024 (share date you added book) or read a book where music is important to the plot (tell us how) .
