Travel Trivia: World's Windiest Cities
March 1, 2025 to Completion
0/7
0/4 Spell out

1. Wellington, New Zealand
“Windy” Wellington (as it is commonly called) is the world’s southernmost capital city and frequently tops the list of the world’s windiest cities due to both its average wind speed (22 mph) and strongest recorded gust (133 mph). The winds in this region are called the "Roaring Forties" because the city is located 40 to 50 degrees south of the equator. It's in the perfect position for gale-force westerly currents to rip across the Pacific Ocean and become compressed by the narrow Cook Strait before wreaking havoc ashore. There's even a statue, "Solace in the Wind," on the waterfront that depicts a human figure leaning into the breeze. Wellington proudly takes advantage of its winds, harnessing them for clean energy.
✱Read a book set in New Zealand (tell us where) OR read a book by an author whose initials can be found in WELLINGTON.

2. St. John’s, Canada
Located on the easternmost point of Canada is St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. This charming fishing town is number one in superlatives, being the windiest, cloudiest, foggiest, snowiest, and wettest place in Canada. In regards to wind from October to April, it blows at an average of 13 mph; for the remainder of the year, the average wind speed is 10 mph. In 2021, the city recorded 143 days with gusts of over 37 mph and 12 days when the gusts reached over 62 mph.
✱Read a book with a superlative in its title (i.e worst, best, littlest, etc.) OR read a book set in CANADA (tell us where).

3. Dodge City, USA
Kansas is located in the heart of Tornado Alley, the region of the US where tornadoes are most frequent. Dodge City, which is popular for its Wild West reenactments, is also known for its persistently blustery conditions. These are the result of high-pressure systems that sweep down from the Rockies and across the High Plains, mixing with low-pressure systems rising from the Gulf of Mexico. Late February to late June is typically the windiest time of the year, with wind speeds topping out at an average of 13 mph in April. In December 2021, a powerful windstorm produced the city’s highest recorded gusts of 84 mph.
✱Read a book a book published in the month of April or the year 2021 (share publication date) OR read a book set in a midwestern state - tell us where (view spoiler).

4. Punta Arenas & Rio Gallegos, Patagonia
Both these remote towns are a common stopover for travelers looking to explore the incredible landscapes of Patagonia or Antarctica. Chile's Punta Arenas is a shipping port that sits on the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This strait is widely regarded as one of the world’s most difficult routes to navigate because of the unpredictability of the tides and winds. These same winds are felt constantly, with November being the windiest month, with an average of 17.9 mph. When the gusts pick up, ropes are installed between the downtown buildings to help visitors and locals navigate the streets. Likewise, Río Gallegos in Argentina sits just inland from where the Gallegos River empties out into the frigid waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. With an exposed and low-lying location, it frequently sees gusts of 60 mph and above throughout the year.
✱Read a book set in a remote location (tell us where) OR read a book that has all the letters in ROPE in the title (any order).

5. Baku, Azerbaijan
The windiest city in Eurasia is the vibrant city of Baku. It is rich in history and culture, with evidence of human settlements dating back to the 4th millennium BCE. Referred to since ancient times as “the city of pounding wind,” it struggles with two sources of wind at the same time: the cold northern wind khazri and the warm southern wind gilavar. Sitting at 92 feet below sea level on the coastline of the Caspian Sea, there is nothing to impede these two sources of wind as they collide over the city. As a note of interest, Baku is the lowest-lying national capital and largest city in the world below sea level.
✱Read the lowest rated book on your TBR (share rating) OR read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in BAKU (share name).

6. Cold Bay, USA
With a name like Cold Bay and a location in the remote Aleutian Islands of Alaska, it’ll come as little surprise that this city experiences adverse weather conditions. The windiest season here lasts for over seven months, from mid-September well into April, with wind speeds topping out at an average of 18.2 miles per hour in November. Also known as the Cradle of the Storm, the region is among the stormiest areas in the North Pacific. But don’t let this keep you from making the trek here to visit. You will be welcomed by a spectacular natural landscape made up of volcanoes and glaciers, along with wildlife such as brown bears, caribou, and waterfowl.
✱Read a book set in Alaska (tell us where) OR read a book where a storm is important to the plot (briefly share why).

7. Aviemore, Scotland
Aviemore is a town located in the Scottish Highlands within the Cairngorms National Park. It’s a popular vacation destination due to its close proximity to the secluded lochs, ancient forests, mountain trails, and ski runs of the surrounding parkland. At its snowy summit of the Cairngorms, winds have been recorded up to 173 mph. This extreme wind speed has also been recorded in Scotland’s Shetland Islands. The instrument that recorded this gust in 1986 at the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse was, ironically, destroyed by violent localized gusts soon afterwards.
✱Read a book with a lighthouse on the cover (post cover) OR read a book set in the UK (tell us where).
