Challenge #163- CCC- Misfit
A Brief History of the US Space Program
Duration: December 1, 2018 - March 31, 2019

See- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

✔1. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the US Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aerospace research. After the Soviet launch of the world's first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) on October 4, 1957, the United States became alarmed about national security and decided action was needed. Until that time, the US had a fledgling space program under the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). On July 29, 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, establishing NASA. When it began operations on October 1, 1958, NASA absorbed the 43-year-old NACA intact.
🚀 Read a book about the Cold War between the US and the USSR (may be historical fiction) - Tintin in the Land of the Soviets by Hergé 1/9/19
OR read a book that takes place during the 1950’s OR read a book which includes a character who works for an agency known by its acronym (i.e. NASA, FBI, CIA).

✔2.
🚀 Read a book that has a main character who is a scientist or an engineer OR read a book that is marked “espionage” or “spy” OR read a book in which the author’s first and last initials may be found in TECHNOLOGY.- George Orwell- Coming Up for Air 12/3/18

✔3. The NASA agency's leader is nominated by the President of the United States subject to approval of the US Senate. The leader/administrator reports directly to the President and serves as senior space science advisor. The first administrator was Dr. T. Keith Glennan appointed by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. During his term he brought together the disparate projects in American space development research.
🚀 Read a book that takes place in Washington, D.C. OR read a book that involves politics OR read a book that is the first in a new-to-you series or an author’s debut book.- The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey 12/8/18

*****4. The second administrator, James E. Webb (1961–1968), appointed by President John F. Kennedy, was tasked with the Apollo program to achieve Kennedy's Moon landing goal by the end of the 1960s. Webb directed major management restructuring and facility expansion, establishing the Houston Manned Spacecraft (Johnson) Center and the Florida Launch Operations (Kennedy) Center. Capitalizing on Kennedy's legacy, President Lyndon Johnson kept continuity with the Apollo program by keeping Webb on when he succeeded Kennedy in November 1963. But Webb resigned in October 1968 before Apollo achieved its goal.
🚀 Read a book with a “2” in its original publication year (tell us when) OR read a book by an author who first name is James or John (reasonable variations okay) - Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew J. Sullivan- Published June 13th 2017
OR read a book in which a character does not achieve his or her goal.

✔5. To date NASA has conducted many manned and unmanned spaceflight programs. Unmanned programs launched the first American artificial satellites into Earth orbit for scientific and communications purposes. Scientific probes have been sent to explore the planets of the solar system, starting with Venus and Mars, and including "grand tours" of the outer planets. NASA manned programs sent the first Americans into low Earth orbit (LEO) and won the Space Race with the Soviet Union by landing twelve men on the Moon from 1969 to 1972 in the Apollo program.
🚀 Read a book marked “Travel” on its main GoodReads page - In Morocco by Edith Wharton 1/27/19

OR read a book that takes place in outer space OR read a book whose cover shows some type of communication (i.e. phone, computer, pencil and paper; post the cover).

✔6. Mercury, America's first human space flight program, introduced the nation to its first astronauts. From 1958-1963, there were six total flights with six astronauts flown. Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. was the first man launched into sub-orbital space on May 5, 1961; the flight lasted 15 minutes, 28 seconds.
🚀 Read the 6th book in a series (tell us the series) OR read a book whose title begins with a letter in MERCURY - Calypso by David Sedaris 1/10/19
(disregard a/an/the) OR read a book about an astronaut (real or fictional; tell us who).

✔7. On Feb. 20, 1962, an Atlas rocket (Mercury Atlas 6) successfully carried John Glenn (who later became a Senator representing Ohio) and the hopes of an entire nation into orbit aboard Friendship 7. The 4 hours, 55 minutes, 23 seconds journey was a three-orbit flight that placed the first American into orbit.
🚀 Read a book about friendship OR read a book whose location begins with a letter in ORBIT (tell us where) OR read a book featuring a politician (tell us who).- Illinois- The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson 12/18/18

8. Project Gemini, given its name from the Latin word for "twins," as the new capsule would accommodate two pilots, is often referred to as the "bridge to the moon." It spanned between Project Mercury and the Apollo lunar landing flights. NASA's two-man spaceflights demonstrated that astronauts could change their capsule's orbit, remain in space for at least two weeks and work outside their spacecraft. They also pioneered rendezvous and docking with other spacecraft. All were essential skills to land on the moon and return safely to Earth.
🚀 Read a book featuring twins OR read a book showing a bridge on its cover (post the cover) - The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George by Nina George- part of a Parisian bridge on cover.
OR read a book written by two (and only two) authors (both author names don't have to be listed on the cover, as long as the author link indicates that two people are writing under one pen name).

*****9. The Apollo program did not start auspiciously when tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204 (later named Apollo 1) on January 27, 1967. The mission was to be the first crewed flight of Apollo, and was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967. Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module.
🚀 Read a book that involves a major fire (i.e. more than a campfire; tell us briefly about the fire) - A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny 12/22/18- on Halloween night...all the major characters display their poweres with a gigantic bonfire ("banefire").

OR read a book with an orange cover (post the cover) OR read a book that takes place in winter (December, January, February; tell us when).

*****10. The U.S public's perception of the Soviet lead in the space race motivated President John F. Kennedy to ask the Congress on May 25, 1961, to commit the federal government to a program to land a man on the Moon by the end of the 1960s, which effectively launched the Apollo program. Apollo was one of the most expensive American scientific programs ever. It cost more than $20 billion in 1960s dollars (estimated $213 billion in present-day US dollars). It used the Saturn rockets as launch vehicles, which were far bigger than the rockets built for previous projects. The spacecraft was also bigger; it had two main parts, the combined command and service module (CSM) and the lunar landing module (LM). The LM was to be left on the Moon and only the command module (CM) containing the three astronauts would eventually return to Earth.
🚀 Read a book that takes place in the 1960s - The Green Man by Kingsley Amis 12/20/18
OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials are either “LM” or “CM” (those initial combos only!) OR read a book that was expensive to obtain (tell us why).

✔11. The second manned mission, Apollo 8, brought astronauts for the first time in a flight around the Moon in December 1968. Apollo 8 was launched on December 21, 1968, and became the first manned spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Earth's Moon, orbit it and return safely to Earth. The three-astronaut crew — Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders — became the first humans to see Earth as a whole planet and directly see the far side of the Moon with their own eyes. The 1968 mission, the third flight of the Saturn V rocket was the first spaceflight launch from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, located adjacent to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
🚀 Read a book in which some kind of historic first takes place (tell us what) OR read a book about the Apollo 8 Mission (I highly recommend Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon) OR read a book that takes place in Florida.- set in Florida- Florida Roadkill by Tim Dorsey 12/24/19

✔12. On the next two missions, Apollo 9 and Apollo 10, docking maneuvers that were needed for the Moon landing were practiced. The first live color TV transmissions to Earth began three hours after launch when Apollo 10 was 3,570 miles from Earth and concluded when the spacecraft was 9,428 miles away. The transmission showed the docking process and the interior of the command and space module.
🚀 If you have a large TBR, read any book between 3,570 and 9,428 (tell us the book's position) OR read a book that somehow involves television (tell us how) OR read a book in which a character practices something (i.e. sports, piano; tell us what).- Gertrude and Claudius by John Updike- Claudius practices falconry. 12/31/18

✔13. At 9:32 a.m. (EST) on July 16, 1969, the engines of another Saturn V rocket fired Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins past the launch tower at Kennedy Space Center. The three-stage 363-foot rocket used 7.5 million pounds of thrust to propel them into space and into history. Three days later the crew is in lunar orbit.
🚀 Read a book with an intact "32," "16," or "11" found intact in a book's total page count OR read a book in which the author's first and last initials may be found in "ARMSTRONG," "ALDRIN," or "COLLINS" - Collins- Chris Offutt- Out of the Woods 1/11/19
(tell us which) OR read a book you find particularly powerful or moving (tell us why).

*****14. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the Lunar Module, made a final check, and the Eagle undocked and separated from Columbia for its descent to the moon’s surface. It was almost four hours later that Armstrong emerged from the Eagle and deployed the TV camera for the transmission of the event to Earth. At about 109 hours, 42 minutes after launch, Armstrong stepped onto the moon. About 20 minutes later, Aldrin followed him. The camera was then positioned on a tripod about 30 feet from the LM. Half an hour later, President Nixon spoke by telephone link with the astronauts. An estimated 530 million people watched Armstrong's televised image and heard his voice describe the event as he took "...one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
🚀 Read a book that starts each chapter or section with a quote- Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading by Nina Sankovitch 12/11/18

Challenge #173-
WANDERING THE CCC: Challenge Help

see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

WANDERING THE CCC: Challenge Help
Timeframe: 1/1/19 to 1/31/19
6/6

We're starting a new series of monthly challenges called "Wandering through the Crazy Challenge Connection." This series will highlight a different section in the group that you may not have explored or have forgotten about. We try to offer a wide variety of activities in our group, and these challenges will feature a different section each month. Have fun!

CHALLENGE RULES:
♦ If you want to participate in a challenge, please sign up by posting at least a partial list of the challenge requirements. This gives us a post to link you to, which you can use to update your books as the challenge progresses.

♦ Unless otherwise noted, books must be at least 150 pages long. (See the link here for rules regarding graphic novels.) Books may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged :) Re-reads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book and not simply skim through it.

♦ For each book you read, please post a link to the title, and indicate the author and the date you finished reading it.

♦ When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message to make it easier for everyone to see what you’ve read :) If you don’t repost your list, your name will not be added to the list of those who have completed the challenge.

CHALLENGE TASKS:

It's sometimes difficult to find a book to meet a specific challenge task requirement, so we've established the Challenge Help section to provide some help. Members can make suggestions about the categories that they find problematic, and one of the mods will be happy to add that section to the master list. We count on our members to add books to each applicable section, and this may help someone else when they need to find a book to meet a specific difficult area.

✔1. This is where you'll get assistance for your specific challenge need. And to make things easier, the categories are divided into easy sections, beginning with Authors.
* Read a book with an author whose first and last initials are the same - or - a book by an English author.- The Radiant Way by Margaret Drabble 1/26/19

✔2. Challenges often ask for specific title information, and we offer suggestions in the next section about Book Titles.
* Read a book with a number in the title - or - a book with at least 6 (or more) words in the title.- Tintin in the Land of the Soviets by Hergé 1/9/19

✔3. Covers offer a wide variety of popular challenge tasks, and the next section will help you find what you need.
* Read a book with a primarily orange cover - Daniel Deronda by George Eliot by George Eliot 1/19/19
or - a book with an animal on the cover (whichever you choose, post the cover).

✔4. From time to time you will be asked to find a book with a specific type of character, so the next section will help you there.
* Read a book with a main character in his/her 40's - or - a book with a character whose first or last name starts with O, V, X, Y, or Z (tell us the character's name).-Vera in And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie 1/7/19

✔5. When looking for a book with a specific location or time period, you'll find what you need in this section.
* Read a book set in Africa (tell us where) - or - a book set in the future.- In Morocco by Edith Wharton 1/27/19- Morocco

✔6. Go to the Challenge Help section here and add something to one of the folders. Someone will appreciate your help.- see https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

January 2019 Scavenger Challenge | Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates
January 1 - 31, 2019
7/7

✔1. American author Mary Mapes Dodge wrote Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates: A Story of Life in Holland in 1865. Though fictional, the book portrays life in the Netherlands in the early 19th century. The Dutch sport of speed skating is introduced to America and Hans Brinker is still considered the prototype of a speed skater.
⛸ Read a book that takes place in the 19th century- Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy 2/5/19
OR read a book which features a winter sport.

✔2. Ms. Dodge didn’t visit Holland until after the novel’s publication, but had a great interest in the Netherlands and learned much from her Dutch immigrant neighbors. The book became an instant bestseller and has never gone out of print. It remains a classic Children’s story.
⛸ Read a book that takes place in the Netherlands OR read a book from the NY Times Bestseller list (be sure to tell us when the book was on the list).- Calypso by David Sedaris 1/10/19- on NYT Best Seller list July 15, 2018

✔3. The story opens with 15 year old Hans Brinker and his younger sister, Gretel, excitedly hoping to win the big ice skating race on the frozen canal. In reality, they don’t have much hope of winning with their homemade wooden skates, but Hans works several jobs to earn money to buy steel skates.
⛸ Read a young adult (YA) book- Where the Lilies Bloom by Vera Cleaver 1/9/19

OR read a book in which the MC character faces a task without much hope of succeeding; briefly tell us the circumstances.

✔4. The siblings’ father, Raff Brinker, had fallen from a dyke several years ago and suffered head trauma. Due to amnesia and occasional violent outbursts, he can no longer work and the family is very poor. By chance, Hans meets the great surgeon, Dr. Boekman, and begs him to treat his father. The treatment would be risky and expensive; moreover, the gruff Dr. Boekman, having recently lost his wife and had his son disappear, is not receptive.
⛸ Read a book where a character is grieving something (tell us what) OR read a book featuring a doctor or someone who works in the medical field.- Dr. Armstrong in And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie 1/7/19

✔5. Hans offers Dr. Boekman all the money he has saved to buy steel skates. The magnanimous offer touches the doctor’s grieving heart and he agrees to see their father for free. The doctor diagnoses pressure to the father’s brain and performs surgery to alleviate the trauma. In the meantime, Hans is able to buy steel skates for himself and Gretel.
⛸ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in SKATES (ignore a/an/the) - Tintin in the Land of the Soviets by Hergé 1/9/19
OR read a book in which a character could be described as generous; briefly tell us why.

✔6. The day of the race arrives. Hans lets his friend, who needs the prize money and silver skates more than he does, win the boy’s race. Gretel wins the girl’s race and receives the eponymous silver skates. Mr. Brinker, now recovered from his head trauma, remembers where he had his savings buried and is able to restore the family’s finances.
⛸ Read a book in which a character wins a race or competition (tell us what) OR read a book whose author’s first and last initials may be found in BRINKER.- Nawal El-Saadawi- Woman at Point Zero 2/11/19

✔7. Mr. Brinker also has information that leads to finding Dr. Boekman’s missing son, thus restoring some hope and good cheer to the doctor’s life. Dr. Boekman helps Hans go to medical school and he becomes a successful doctor. As all really good stories do, this tale ends happily ever after.
⛸ Read a book with its own HEA ending OR read a book where a missing character is found.- Daniel Deronda by George Eliot 1/19/19- has an HEA AND at least three missing people are found during the novel.

Yemen's Capital: Sana'a
January 1, 2019 - January 31, 2019

To go along with this months group read, we are exploring the capital of Yemen.
6/6

✔1. Bab al-Yemen
The "Gate of the Yemen," is one of the city's most important landmarks and is the main gate leading into the old city district. Its current design was built in the 17th century by the Turks. It is historically opened each morning and closed each evening to let citizens enter and exit. Today, it is the most ornate of the gates of Sanaa's Old City.

✱ Read a book that has gate on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that takes place in the the 17th century OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in BAB-AL-YEMEN.- Nawal El-Saadawi- Woman at Point Zero 2/11/19

✔2. The Old City
Inhabited for more than 2,500 years and declared a World Heritage site in 1986, the fortified Old City is surrounded by ancient clay walls which stand 30–46 feet high. Be sure to take the stairs to the top of the walls for great views of the uniquely Yemeni style of architecture consisting of multiple-story tower houses with elaborate friezes and distinctive stained-glass windows. Explore the open air markets selling all sorts of goods including cooking wares, tools, nuts, spices, and jewelry.

✱ Read a book that has a wall or multi-story building on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that has over 2,500 ratings on its GR Home Page - Calypso by David Sedaris 1/10/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE OLD CITY.

✔3. The Great Mosque
Located in the Old City, the Great Mosque is more than 1,400 years old making it one of the oldest in the world. According to local legend, the Prophet Muhammad was involved in the planning and construction of the mosque. An important discovery made during a 1972 renovation was the Sana’a Manuscript one of the oldest Quranic manuscripts in existence along with several copies of an ancient version of the Quran.

OR

Housed in a former palace known as the House of Happiness, this museum offers an overview of Sana'a history and the several dynasties that have ruled over it. It contains over 75,000 artifacts categorized into eras, dating from pre-Christianity. You will be pulled into a magical tour of history from the moment you step inside this ancient palace, and each narrow, winding staircase adds to the charm. Once you reach the rooftop, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Al-Tahrir Square.

✱ Read a book with something on the cover that could be classified as an ARTIFACT OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORY or HISTORICAL FICTION on its GR Home Page - The Forty-Five Guardsmen by Alexandre Dumas 1/23/19
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL MUSEUM.

✔5. Al Saleeh Mosque
Towering high above the city is the largest and most modern mosque in Yemen. Inaugurated in 2008, this impressive yet costly mosque created a lot of controversy during its construction. Built to house over 44,000 worshipers, the hopes of the administration was that it would help promote moderate Islam in a country that is so deeply divided.

✱ Read a book that is controversial in some way (tell us how) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in AL SALEEH MOSQUE.- Almudena Solana-The Curriculum Vitae of Aurora Ortiz 2/15/19

✔6. Yemen Civil War
Obviously, this is NOT an attraction!! But our virtual visit to Sana'a would not be complete without mentioning the devastating civil war that has been centered here since 2015. The capital has been closed to visitors and bombing has done severe damage to the city including many of its historical areas. And sadly, over 10,000 civilians have been killed and thousands more are homeless and struggling with disease and famine. They have temporarily made the city of Aden the capital until the unrest in Sana’a subsides.
