Tasks
✔1. Free Walking Tour of Old Town
According to UNESCO, Quito has “the best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America". The popular free walking tour is the perfect way to explore and learn its history. The guides take you up and down the hilly cobblestone streets, pointing out important landmarks and sharing interesting stories. Some of the highlights are the Presidential Palace, the 17th-century Jesuit church La Compania de Jesus with its gold covered walls and La Ronda – the oldest street in the city.
✱ Read a book that shows a street on the cover OR
✱ Read a book you obtained for free (library books don't count, ARCs do count) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in FREE WALKING TOUR.- Nawal El-Saadawi- Woman at Point Zero 2/11/19
✔2. Plaza Grande Changing of the Guard
Plaza Grande is located in the center of Old Town and is a constant hub of activity. But every Monday morning a formal ceremony is held to mark the changing of the guards. It’s all quite the pomp and circumstance! A marching band parades through; guards on horses have their choreographed moment, and then you’ll get to wave to the President of Ecuador as he oversees the event from the balcony of the Presidential Palace.
✱ Read a book that shows a horse or a balcony on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that has a parade or ceremony in it (tell us what is was for) a MC, Jack is promoted in the US Army at a ceremony at a fort in the Arizona Territory in These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 by Nancy E. Turner
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in PLAZA GRANDE.
✔3. Basilica of the National Vow
Designed after the famous Notre Dame of Paris, this is the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. Work on it began in 1883 and remains unfinished to this day. Visitors are welcome and the stained glass windows are not to be missed. The more adventurous can climb the steep stairs to the clock faces of the two towers for fantastic views of the city. And be sure to take a close look at the exterior "gargoyles" that have been replaced with different species of animals that represent the rich biodiversity of the country.
✱ Read a book tagged GOTHIC on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book where the MC does something dangerous that involves height (tell us what) - in A Tramp Abroad Mark Twain hikes and climbs several Swiss Alps including the Matterhorn.
OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in BASILICA.
✔4. Capilla del Hombre
Dedicated to the people of Latin America, “The Chapel of Man” was designed by famed Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín. The strikingly modern-looking monument-cum-museum sits atop a hill overlooking the city and is meant to be a tribute to humankind. Through his murals and sculpture, Guayasamín hoped to capture the experience of a people fighting political oppression and give them hope for something better. Completed three years after his death in 1999, it offers the perfect backdrop to his emotionally moving paintings.
✱ Read a book that takes place in Latin America OR
✱ Read a book that gave you hope (tell us how) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CAPILLA DEL HOMBRE.- Andrej Blatnik- Skinswaps 2/25/19
✔5. Mitad del Mundo
On the outskirts of Quito you can visit the equator for which Ecuador receives its name. Mitad del Mundo, a massive monument and museum marking the hemispheric divide, provides an opportunity to be in two places at once. You can even have your passport stamped showing you’ve stood on the equator. Surrounding the monument is a small city of shops and restaurants where you can purchase artisan goods and exotic Ecuadorian food.
✱ Read a book that has a directional word in the title (north, south, right, left, etc) OR
✱ Read a series book that is in the middle of the series (share the series number) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MITAD DEL MUNDO- Umberto Eco- How to Travel with a Salmon and Other Essays 2/19/19
✔6. Virgin of El Panecillo
Towering over and guarding the streets of Quito, this statue is the city's symbol and most recognizable landmark. Legend holds that she faces the north and blesses those living there, while her back is turned to the south, explaining the wealth disparity between the two parts of the city. Take the winding road up the hill of El Panecillo for
a closer look and a spectacular view of the city and Cotopaxi Volcano.
✱ Read a book that has a famous landmark on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC who is VERY rich or VERY poor - Tess's poverty leads to some poor decisions in Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy 2/5/19
