Hello Book Club Members!

My name is Nicole and I’m looking forward to discussing April’s Book Club title: The Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston.

In this book Preston will detail the history and mystery of the 500-year-old lost city, which is located in the Honduran interior. There have been many expeditions to re-discover and explore The White City – most have ended in failure.

In 2012, with modern technology at their disposal, Preston joined a team of scientists in their expedition to find The Lost City of the Monkey God. His team encounters treacherous conditions, deadly animals, and beautiful wilderness in their quest. It will be great to discover and discuss their journey together as a group!

Copies of the book are available through the library in a variety of formats. Titles can be found on our library’s catalogue:

Along with commenting on discussion questions that I post, please feel free to create and post your own thoughts and questions.

Thanks!

Heidi Madden | 118 comments Hi Nicole :) So this is another book that I would have NEVER picked up on my own. That's why I love this book club! I've never heard of the City of the Monkey God or the White City so this is all new to me. The only thing I know about Honduras is that they have a gorgeous beach that I visited while on a cruise and it's apparently a very, very violent place.

Initial thoughts from chapter one? (When the security guy is telling them about all the dangers of the jungle) "Well this is lovely" :/ Luckily it gets better!!!

Hi Heidi!

Thanks for your feedback. I agree with your point about book clubs - reading books that you never would have otherwise.

Like you I had never heard of the City of the Monkey God/the White City/La Ciudad Blanca. The title alone was enough to intrigue me to read further!

Yes, the first chapter "The Gates of Hell", certainly paints an intimidating and terrifying picture of the dangers for the expedition. I found that really drew me in to the story almost as a teaser of things to come.

Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts as we get further into the book!

~Nicole~
