Benjamin Uke | 62 comments Digitally? By genre and what I get out of them.
In real life though? I do it artistically, trying to get the best color combination that makes the shelf look good and draws the eye.

message 52: by Turah (new)

Turah | 19 comments My bookshelves are a little random, but it makes since to me. One way I organize my books is by author. And it goes for all of them. Then what I do is put books together is they have the same publishers. I have one shelf that is classics and other random ones. Other than that, I don't have much organization to my books.

message 53: by Karma (new)

Karma Eberhardt (ladylibrary) Well I don't have a lot of bookshelves but one bookshelf is dedicated entirely to series so those are all together and that includes books that are a series that I may not own all of the series yet ...then the other 3 bookshelves are organized by genre, then by height!

Eric Klein (wheelguyeric102963) | 21 comments I never organize my books

message 55: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 194 comments Right now my books are totally not organized. Before I moved they were all alphabetical by last name of author--separated into bookcases depending on if they were read or not read--with a few exceptions. The exceptions were: series books by multiple authors (Dr. Who, Star Trek and a few other series) are all filed under the name of the series. I had a small bookcase that held all of my autographed books (yes, I have a few (dozens) of those) and finally, my books by Andre Norton and Terry Pratchett were the first books that you saw when looking at my bookcases. I haven't done that since we moved because--well, the bookcases are no longer all in the same room. Instead they are spread through 5 different rooms now, and trying to figure out where to put what isn't easy.

And I also have to admit--just thinking about organizing them is a big enough job that it has me feeling exhausted. And that's after I'd gotten rid of almost a thousand books before we moved. . . I do not have an addiction problem, I have a lack of time problem. Plus the ones that I kept were all well loved favourites that I just can not bear to part with. But I have been winnowing down my crafting and sewing books the last few weeks, so I'm feeling a bit virtuous about that.

message 56: by Sha (new)

Sha I do ebooks (gave away most of my Physical books due to lack of space) so;

Fiction: Authors First Name, with Folders for series inside.

Nonfiction: By topic; Biography, Mythology, Law, Biology, Phy-Chem, Humanities, Gender (should come in humanities probably. It's not a perfect system. YET.)

message 57: by Sharon (new)

Sharon The top shelf is for my favorites. After that they have no order. Organized chaos I suppose.

Stephen Robert Collins (stephenrobertcollins) | 99 comments Hell no got my Doctor Who book together but cooker books together otherwise it's all over the place.

message 59: by Amy (new)

Amy | 11 comments my sister is obsessed with organising our library. the books are organised according to genre, with series and authors kept together

storytime-reviews | 43 comments Amy wrote: "my sister is obsessed with organising our library. the books are organised according to genre, with series and authors kept together"

It's because it's important dude! Also, you know that it is much easier to find what you want now and I know exactly where each book of ours is.

message 61: by Ernesto (new)

Ernesto Alvarado (ernestoalvarado) | 23 comments A combination of topic and size

message 62: by Bells (new)

Bells (bellsduarte) | 4 comments I change a lot. Right now is by color and I do not recommend it because all my series are apart and it's kinda driving me crazy. The one that works the most for me is Genre and author. Also favorites top of the shelf, unreads by the bottom.

RyanneAndHerBooks | 64 comments Mine is organized by series the best way they fit on my biggest shelf. Then my standalones go on my smaller 2 shelf shelf, hardcovers on top shelf and paperbacks on bottom. Any series where I don't have them all yet or any stanalones go on the last shelf of my biggest shelf along with and extras/side stories (like 3.5 in a series) that don't fit with the rest. Then my currently reading books are next to my bed on my lamp shelf thingy.

RyanneAndHerBooks | 64 comments *standalones that don't fit on my smaller shelf go on the last shelf of my biggest shelf. . . ."
:)

Stella | 108 comments Okay. I want to do a-z genre then a-z author last name but I share my library with my 9-year-old sister and she claims "that's too hard to remember" so it is a-z genre then a-z book title. Honestly, I'm the one who shelves everything so that sucks. I have three 6 1/2 foot bookshelves from Ikea(billy bookcase if you were wondering). The top shelf of my first one is books my sister can't read (YA, romance, horror). The order of my genres are; First bookcase: Animals, Graphic Novels, and Fantasy. Second Bookcase; which is weird because I put Historical Fiction on the bottom and Horror/Mystery on the top and picture books in the middle(the top and bottom should be vice versa). Third Bookcase; Mythology aka Rick Riordian, Poetry, Realistic Fiction, Sci-fi, Star Wars, Non-fic, and Magazines/Yearbooks. Now I'm gonna reorganize my bookshelves thx!

message 66: by Novelist Dienne (new)

Novelist Dienne (novelistdienne) | 6 comments Looking at this Discussion it makes me realize that I need to reorganize my stuff. I divided it up by non-fiction and fiction than by genre

message 67: by quq (new)

quq (190511) I just put my favorite books on my bookshelf. all the others are downstairs around the house, in a huge stack next to my nightstand, on my dresser, a few select on my nightstand, and the worst of all in my closet.
smh at myself

message 68: by grace (new)

grace (vintagelygrace) (vintagelygrace) | 13 comments i usually organise them by genres, followed by authors. i put the books i’m currently reading at the front of my shelf, so i can easily get them if i want to. i’ve tried rearranging my books into multiple rainbow shelves, but i don’t have enough for that... yet

message 69: by Manisha (new)

Manisha | 8 comments I organise them by genre, then by author, then by the colour of the book spines.

Frank-Intergalactic Bookdragon (intergalacticbookdragon) By author and whatever looks the most aesthetically pleasing

message 71: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (artemisstarlite) | 20 comments I don’t have many on my bookshelf bc they’re super small, but I go alphabetical by last name, and comics are stacked below. Definitely want a new way when I get new bookshelves

Bhavik (Semi Hiatus) (bhavik_elric90) | 1 comments Dont have a bookshelf so just stuff them in the cupboard with unread ones above read in piles

message 73: by Oscar (new)

Oscar Maquito (oscar02) | 26 comments I organize them in spine color and book height 🤗🤗🤗

message 74: by Angela (last edited Jul 25, 2018 08:26AM) (new)

Angela Auten | 128 comments I organize my books by series if I have the paperback which I don't have a lot of paperbacks to begin with. Most of my books are e-books. Hardcovers are always in the back. I'm not a big hardcover fan. If they are standalone books and by the same author I put them together.

message 75: by Sassy Sedusa (new)

Sassy Sedusa | 1538 comments I organize my shelf by size order. I have a small bookcase and a lot of books so I need to keep the books even so I can stack my books on top of them. ( I don't know if this makes sense) I would really love if I could organize my bookshelves by authors last name.

message 76: by Ashley Holdren (new)

Ashley Holdren | *Whimsies of a Nerd Girl ~ Fantasy Book Blogger (whimsiesofanerdgirl) | 1 comments I organize mine firstly by genre, then by author, and then by title/series! :)

message 77: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (caro7) I don't organize except that I keep series together and sometimes put authors together. I have six full-size bookcases and one half bookcase, so it does get confusing trying to find what I need but not enough to organize better.

message 78: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) Alpha by author. The only way I can do it. I would love to do rainbow but I just can't. lol

message 79: by Sneha (new)

Sneha (lovegood19) I only have one bookshelf which I have organized by author, then by book height.

message 80: by OliveTree (new)

OliveTree (themostsmooth) | 15 comments sorted in chunks by genre. In each individual chunk, I sort the books alphabetically by author name, unless there is more than one book in a series, and not all books are by the same author, in which case said books go next to each other. Multiple unrelated books by the same author are simply but alphabetically in order of title.

message 83: by Lissa (last edited Sep 23, 2019 03:19AM) (new)

Lissa | 49 comments Well I don't have too many books and they (used to) fit on my one book case (It's I think five single IKEA shelves) and I have them arranged firstly by language (I'm German but read mostly English books now) then by genre (Fantasy/non-Fantasy/poetry/non-fiction and biographies etc.). I keep series together but I try to organise the standalones by colour.
It does look kinda cool but it's getting pretty stuffed and I already have a few books standing on another shelf and some other places for my non-fiction that I don't really need but I also don't have space for an second set of shelves

message 84: by Rachel Adiyah (new)

Rachel Adiyah | 88 comments Basically, the only organization among my books is by whether they've been read or not. My read books are placed on certain shelves in no particular order, and unread books are on other shelves in no particular order.

message 85: by Maria (new)

Maria (mariasaleem) | 42 comments By genre and series

message 86: by Maritina (new)

Maritina Mela (maritinamela) | 16 comments Actually I don't really organize them. I stack them on my shelves because I own a small bookcase and hope I can fit in as many as I can.

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

I have three bookshelves in my room, so I organize mine by authors

message 88: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 392 comments I kind of put my new books where I find a place to put them. I have three bookshelves: the first one is the one for my books in french, the second one for my books in english and the third one is probably gonna end up like the second one, but for now it's half books in english and half CDs/DVDs (I'm trying to find somewhere else to put those).

message 89: by Sam (new)

Sam (olivedxn) | 105 comments I have bookshelves and organise them by genre and then by hight. :)

message 90: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela Almeida | 4 comments I organize my books by colors. I start with the dark colors and then I put the purples and the blues, in the middle the green and yellow ones and then pink and red. However, the trilogies and series have to be together so they a have a separate space for them. The books that I haven,t read yet are turned upside down.

message 91: by Nunya (new)

Nunya (doctorwhofan42) | 67 comments Gabriela wrote: "I organize my books by colors. I start with the dark colors and then I put the purples and the blues, in the middle the green and yellow ones and then pink and red. However, the trilogies and serie..."

That's a really cool idea! I actually might start doing something similar!

message 92: by Nunya (new)

Nunya (doctorwhofan42) | 67 comments Currently I organize by alphabetical order by title. "The's" and "A's" etc. don't count. When my bookshelf gets full, I get rid of the books that I didn't like that much.

My unread books I keep in 4 piles about 3 feet high in the corner of my room until I read them, then I either get rid of them or they go on the bookshelf if I liked it enough. If I don't have time to figure out where they go alphabetically, I put them on my desk until I have time.

message 93: by Sydney (new)

Sydney | 3 comments in order from top shelf to bottom is
1. TBR list
2.Books I've read and loved
3.Books I've read
4.Books idk why I still have....they killed my heart!

message 94: by elena ✧˖° (new)

elena ✧˖° (ebunker1) | 0 comments I go by series and then by author. Not in alphabetical order, but I prefer to keep authors together. Then, for stand alones, I go from tallest to smallest.

message 95: by Erin (new)

Erin I have a small bookshelf, so not all of my books fit on it, but the ones that do I organize by series

message 96: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 26 comments Boxed sets ?

message 97: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Marshall (vimars) | 26 comments I don’t think I’ve ever done that ... but cool to know/learn.
I try to do by series / author / theme

message 98: by Chris (new)

Chris Gager (chrisinmaine) | 62 comments I have a LOT of books, thanks to my former(almost) habit of book rescuing. I have SO MANY more than I will ever get to read. But ... I like having a selection to choose from. My books are physically arranged by category/genre and then alphabetically by author(fiction/drama/poetry). My non-fiction books are not really organized in any particular way.

message 99: by Maddie (new)

Maddie Just stick them in a spot in one of my desk drawers if they aren't one of my super important

message 100: by Abbie (new)

Abbie | 2 comments I try to keep series together by putting them next to series that are similar and stand alone books I put alphabetically based on the authors surname
