I love food more than books, especially trying new foods in new places. One of my favorite times was restaurant/bar hopping in Chicago trying new drinks and appetizers. It's the first time I had steak tar tar and the plate of meats and cheeses at the Italian restaurant was delightful. The tiki bar had a weird drink made with burboun. Tasted like juice. I do combine food and books. I eat while I read and its the only damage I semi willfully do to books. food finger stains. I don't directly read about food much, but I love when books include passages about good food. Jim Gaffigan book Fat was interesting. But also, food is needed to survive, so it's pretty important.
I love sports/competition, both watching and participating more than books. this includes sports and card/board gsmes. This I combine heavily, reading about athletes and sporting events, baseball and cycling leading the way. I hope to read a book about Bobby Fisher, the chess player soon.
I love fellowship and debate more than books. Not high school debate, but proposing opposite ideas and challenging beliefs. I love to talk and often try to work books into the coversation and I use books I've read to support my arguments. This why I love PBT so much.

I like making things -- mostly knitting, but I crochet, sew and needlepoint as well. I also like to cook. I often do these things will listening to audio books :-D.
I will also add that I love boardgames. Reading is a solitary pursuit, but I like boardgames for the social aspects and (friendly) competition.

What about food do you love. Variety, experience, necessity, the unifying power?

I also very much enjoy road trips and stopping in at small town & neighborhood libraries, thrift stores, community parks. We also do geocaching and mini-golf on these trips. We avoid big cities, resorts, most touristy stuff.
And trees. Though I might put them in the category with family and say 'not things.'

I also volunteer with cats. I am a "socializer" at a no-kill rescue. They take in mostly strays, so unless they are TNR'd (Trap-Neuter-Returned), some of them aren't used to people and need to learn to be ok with humans so they are more adoptable. I am drawn to shy cats, so I love socializing!
"Shy" in this instance is usually way "stronger" than what most people might think of as a shy cat. Some will run and hide from people (and keep running if you try to go after them); some are so scared, all they know to do is hiss and spit and be aggressive to keep the human from coming close. We work with them so they aren't so scared and can be ok with a human.
I also volunteer behind the scenes for a local lost/found pets facebook group.

In answer to your question Jason(even tho it was to Tessa) I am leaning towards the unifying power-grew up in a Polish Family, in an Italian/Polish neighborhood. Be it births, weddings or death, food was/is always a big part of it. I moved out on my own when I was 18 and so out of necessity, I learned to cook and just started exploring and testing. Today, give me a pantry, frig and stove and I can throw something together!
I love food. I love to cook and make new things. I love eating out with friends and having deep, meaningful conversation. I love the mountains and along with that hiking, skiing, and walking. I can’t say I love any of this more than reading but it equal.

I mainly love family/party games as Cheryl said. I regularly host game nights and I own over 70 board games. My faves are Taboo, Scrawl (like the game of "telephone" only with drawings--huge fun), Say Anything, and Life Stories. I also love word games like UpWords and Scrabble.
As far as food goes, I do love the unifying power. Mainly though, I grew up being a picky eater because my dad was too. When I turned 25 I met my best friend who is Mexican and loves to cook. She forced me to try all these foods I used to hate or had never tried. Ever since then, I absolutely love cooking and I love food because there was so much I missed out on for the first quarter of my life. :) There are many people who would still say I am a picky eater. But when you compare what I eat now to what I refused to eat before I was 25, the difference is huge. She made me try bell peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, asparagus, spinach, zucchini and yellow squash, cilantro, mangoes, sweet potatoes, and avocados. I love all that stuff now (except mangoes and brussel sprouts are just ok). And asparagus is hands down my favorite food on the planet!

Arkham Horror was a favourite, too, but not as many of my friends know that one, so we tend to play the ones they are familiar with first, and because we so rarely play anymore, we almost never get back to AH.

I love word games like Upwords but the ppl I play with don't have the vocabulary/memory that I do so they get bored of me always winning.
My husband and I decided we needed a couple more quick casual games for the two of us, so we went to Target and bought Five Crowns and Qwixx deluxe. I'll probably incorporate several house rules to make them more interesting, but at least they have potential and weren't expensive.

I used to dance more than I do now. Started as a university student, but I took ballroom lessons off and on for 15 years. Shortly after stopping that, I did a bit of bellydance, again off and on for a few years (5 maybe?).
Took some time off and in September last year, I started something called "contra dance". It looks a bit like square dancing, but is considered folk dancing. Also different music; Stereotypically, anyway, I assume square dancing is country music. At our contra nights, we have live music, usually violin/fiddle and maybe a few other instruments.

I wouldn't be able to deal with the people and the (potentially) stupid decisions they might make. Or, certainly ones I wouldn't agree with.

Magdalena, I am readkngThe Bluebird Effect: Uncommon Bonds with Common Birds by Julie Zickefoose. She went to school where she fine-turned her coursework so she did have to do the things she did not want to do to birds, Now she works particularly with song birds, rescuing, drawing and painting birds. She also writes and speaks. The point is that if you have the financial and emotional support system--that is a big if--then you may be able to choose a specialized way to help animals. Best of Luck.

Ahhh, you are the first person I've mentioned it to who has even heard of it! :-)
Here's a good, short video. Just under 3 minutes, but the last minute is just a waltz (they always end the evenings with a waltz).

Exactly! Or deciding to euthanize for stupid reasons, etc.

Awwww. <3

I watched a few minutes of this and of a beginner's lesson. Reminds me of movie versions of Jane Austen novels :-)

This week I have The Crossing, New Girl, Rise, Life Sentence, BBT, Mom, Life in Pieces, Agents of Shield, Blindspot, Jane the Virgin, Call the Midwife and The Arrangement. On Netflix I'm watching One Day At a Time and A Series of Unfortunate Events. And later this month I have The 100, Genius, Handmaid's Tale and The Expanse starting.
Anything in common in all that? :D

You seem to watch much more mainstream TV than I do! I constantly have to change my subscriptions because I have shows popping up on the weirdest channels. I have a couple scripted shows on History Channel (Vikings and... one with Jason Momoa whose title eludes me at the moment) and even a scripted show on the Discovery Channel (Genius)! I also have PBS, Bravo, Showcase, E!... All scripted, I'm not one for reality shows really.

Also I love musical theater, singing, terrible reality TV, and trivia as well. Double those things up- I LOVE JEOPARDY. Haha,
@Amy and Ellie, we both have some crossover. Handmaids Tale is excellent!! And I also watch Survivor, Masterchef, and Amazing Race. Biggest guilty pleasure TV show? RuPaul's Drag Race!

Yes!
Also, we did one a few months ago that was done in the wedding scene of Mockingjay, as well. :-) You don't see a whole lot of the dance itself in Mockingjay (I went looking for it on youtube aferward!), but you do see a little bit!

Riverdance (Irish dancing!) - Fun!

I used to have multiple shows I watched each day, but I've slowly cut back more and more to fit in more reading time. :-)

Also, The Handmaid's Tale?
Thanks!

My husband and I were just commenting that we are slowly running out of shows that we watch together. He doesn't like Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which is a musical, Amy), or things like Grey's and Scandal. We do watch Top Chef, Amazing Race and then some comedies like BBT and Life in Pieces.
