Jason Oliver | 3046 comments What do you love more than books? We have the obvious choices for most, family and maybe pets. Do you integrate these loves with reading and books?

Jason Oliver | 3046 comments There are a few things I love more than books.

I love food more than books, especially trying new foods in new places. One of my favorite times was restaurant/bar hopping in Chicago trying new drinks and appetizers. It's the first time I had steak tar tar and the plate of meats and cheeses at the Italian restaurant was delightful. The tiki bar had a weird drink made with burboun. Tasted like juice. I do combine food and books. I eat while I read and its the only damage I semi willfully do to books. food finger stains. I don't directly read about food much, but I love when books include passages about good food. Jim Gaffigan book Fat was interesting. But also, food is needed to survive, so it's pretty important.

I love sports/competition, both watching and participating more than books. this includes sports and card/board gsmes. This I combine heavily, reading about athletes and sporting events, baseball and cycling leading the way. I hope to read a book about Bobby Fisher, the chess player soon.

I love fellowship and debate more than books. Not high school debate, but proposing opposite ideas and challenging beliefs. I love to talk and often try to work books into the coversation and I use books I've read to support my arguments. This why I love PBT so much.

Amy | 12924 comments I’m going to word the question as “as much or equal to” instead of more. For me the answer is obvious: it’s singing and sacred conversation. I also enjoy my TV, film, theater, skiing, hiking, long walks in nature. But yes singing and sacred conversation are always the first to come to mind. I also enjoy a beautiful amusement park, sunning by the pool with a book, And then immersing underwater.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments Interesting question this time.
I like making things -- mostly knitting, but I crochet, sew and needlepoint as well. I also like to cook. I often do these things will listening to audio books :-D.

I will also add that I love boardgames. Reading is a solitary pursuit, but I like boardgames for the social aspects and (friendly) competition.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments I'm going to answer this only referring to "things". So of course God and my family aren't things. I don't love any things more than books but I equally love food, traveling, roller coasters, board games, and my favorite TV shows.

message 8: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver | 3046 comments Tessa, what type of board games? I love Settlers of Catan.

What about food do you love. Variety, experience, necessity, the unifying power?

message 9: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Lots of board game geeks here. I love family/ party ones, like Apples to Apples and Pictionary. My family and I tried Seven Wonders but we're not really into those that have so much to keep track of. Easy to learn, challenging to master, is our forte. Wits & Wagers, Quirkle, Rummikub....

I also very much enjoy road trips and stopping in at small town & neighborhood libraries, thrift stores, community parks. We also do geocaching and mini-golf on these trips. We avoid big cities, resorts, most touristy stuff.

And trees. Though I might put them in the category with family and say 'not things.'

LibraryCin | 11692 comments Pets. Particularly cats. I have 3 of my own and made an attempt to foster one a year ago (my oldest wouldn't go for it, so we found a new foster home for her, where she lived the rest of her life - she was already 15 when she came to me).

I also volunteer with cats. I am a "socializer" at a no-kill rescue. They take in mostly strays, so unless they are TNR'd (Trap-Neuter-Returned), some of them aren't used to people and need to learn to be ok with humans so they are more adoptable. I am drawn to shy cats, so I love socializing!

"Shy" in this instance is usually way "stronger" than what most people might think of as a shy cat. Some will run and hide from people (and keep running if you try to go after them); some are so scared, all they know to do is hiss and spit and be aggressive to keep the human from coming close. We work with them so they aren't so scared and can be ok with a human.

I also volunteer behind the scenes for a local lost/found pets facebook group.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12571 comments I love cooking and wine. Normally enjoy the wine while cooking!
In answer to your question Jason(even tho it was to Tessa) I am leaning towards the unifying power-grew up in a Polish Family, in an Italian/Polish neighborhood. Be it births, weddings or death, food was/is always a big part of it. I moved out on my own when I was 18 and so out of necessity, I learned to cook and just started exploring and testing. Today, give me a pantry, frig and stove and I can throw something together!

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I love food. I love to cook and make new things. I love eating out with friends and having deep, meaningful conversation. I love the mountains and along with that hiking, skiing, and walking. I can’t say I love any of this more than reading but it equal.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Jason wrote: "Tessa, what type of board games? I love Settlers of Catan.

I mainly love family/party games as Cheryl said. I regularly host game nights and I own over 70 board games. My faves are Taboo, Scrawl (like the game of "telephone" only with drawings--huge fun), Say Anything, and Life Stories. I also love word games like UpWords and Scrabble.

As far as food goes, I do love the unifying power. Mainly though, I grew up being a picky eater because my dad was too. When I turned 25 I met my best friend who is Mexican and loves to cook. She forced me to try all these foods I used to hate or had never tried. Ever since then, I absolutely love cooking and I love food because there was so much I missed out on for the first quarter of my life. :) There are many people who would still say I am a picky eater. But when you compare what I eat now to what I refused to eat before I was 25, the difference is huge. She made me try bell peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, asparagus, spinach, zucchini and yellow squash, cilantro, mangoes, sweet potatoes, and avocados. I love all that stuff now (except mangoes and brussel sprouts are just ok). And asparagus is hands down my favorite food on the planet!

message 14: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11692 comments I used to do more board games when I was with my ex. I still enjoy them when I do get friends together for them. We play more of the (older because they are the ones I know and have) European games, though: Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Puerto Rico are among my favourites.

Arkham Horror was a favourite, too, but not as many of my friends know that one, so we tend to play the ones they are familiar with first, and because we so rarely play anymore, we almost never get back to AH.

message 15: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, Scrawl sounds like fun.
I love word games like Upwords but the ppl I play with don't have the vocabulary/memory that I do so they get bored of me always winning.
My husband and I decided we needed a couple more quick casual games for the two of us, so we went to Target and bought Five Crowns and Qwixx deluxe. I'll probably incorporate several house rules to make them more interesting, but at least they have potential and weren't expensive.

Amy | 12924 comments I forgot dancing! I love to dance! Swirl and twirl. It’s the only way I exercise (Zumba). I love a good hora, or dancing with husband or girlfriends at a party. Never resist a line dance led by a motivational dancer. I’m always right in there.

Magdalena | 414 comments I love animals especially cats. I can't think of anything better then being curled up with a good book and a cat. I used to had five but one of them died recently. I also have a goat, rabbit and snail. People have always said I should become a vet but I don't think I'd be able to do it since I can't stand seeing animals in pain

I used to dance more than I do now. Started as a university student, but I took ballroom lessons off and on for 15 years. Shortly after stopping that, I did a bit of bellydance, again off and on for a few years (5 maybe?).

Took some time off and in September last year, I started something called "contra dance". It looks a bit like square dancing, but is considered folk dancing. Also different music; Stereotypically, anyway, I assume square dancing is country music. At our contra nights, we have live music, usually violin/fiddle and maybe a few other instruments.

I wouldn't be able to deal with the people and the (potentially) stupid decisions they might make. Or, certainly ones I wouldn't agree with.

Amy | 12924 comments People love contra dancing. Never seen it myself.

message 21: by Magdalena (new)

message 22: by Cynda (last edited Apr 08, 2018 08:35PM) (new)

Cynda When I was more actively sick and living at my parent's house, my mom and I had a cat each. My cat would come and spend time on my bed. She taught me to leave her alone and she was primarily visiting my cotton bed coverings and secondarily me. That cat🙄 So I would read with her on the bed. It was so sweet.

Magdalena, I am readkngThe Bluebird Effect: Uncommon Bonds with Common Birds by Julie Zickefoose. She went to school where she fine-turned her coursework so she did have to do the things she did not want to do to birds, Now she works particularly with song birds, rescuing, drawing and painting birds. She also writes and speaks. The point is that if you have the financial and emotional support system--that is a big if--then you may be able to choose a specialized way to help animals. Best of Luck.

message 24: by Magdalena (new)

Magdalena | 414 comments It sounds like a really great book I'll definitely look into it. I absolutely want to find a way to help animals I just don't want to be be a veterinarian.

Elise (ellinou) Television. I watch an annoyingly high number of TV shows, and I like watching them live (yes, with commercials!) so I'll spend a lot of time in front of the TV every day. Technically since I have orthoses to wear on my legs for at least an hour each day and that I can't stand up when they're strapped on, I can say I'm not wasting my time, it's part of my "therapy" ^^ But for example this week I have... 9 hours. And 6 shows starting or returning this month.

message 27: by Amy (new)

Here's a good, short video. Just under 3 minutes, but the last minute is just a waltz (they always end the evenings with a waltz).

I watched a few minutes of this and of a beginner's lesson. Reminds me of movie versions of Jane Austen novels :-)

Amy | 12924 comments Singing is divine! Just wanted to say that there's no "as much as". I love that even more than books. Beautiful rehearsal just finished. Always calms my soul. There's very little I love more, possibly nothing more, other than people and pets.

message 35: by SANDYE (new)

SANDYE (sandye_c) It's a toss-up for me, either TV/Movies or Music. If I'm not reading then I'm watching something on TV or listening to my music. Sometimes I will even put music on in the background (sound down low) while I read. I enjoy all 3 and that's what makes me happy!

Elise (ellinou) Amy wrote: "Ellie - we could totally talk TV. I’d be embarrassed to totally share how much I watch, but I watch it all... you name it...."

This week I have The Crossing, New Girl, Rise, Life Sentence, BBT, Mom, Life in Pieces, Agents of Shield, Blindspot, Jane the Virgin, Call the Midwife and The Arrangement. On Netflix I'm watching One Day At a Time and A Series of Unfortunate Events. And later this month I have The 100, Genius, Handmaid's Tale and The Expanse starting.

Anything in common in all that? :D

Amy | 12924 comments Shockingly little! I love on the nine and 10 o’clock dramas and some of the half-hour shows too. Here’s my lineup: Monday nights these days are American Idol and Living Biblically, and Supergirl. Tuesday’s is Bull, Rise, For the People, Kevin Probably Saves the World, Fresh off the Boat and Blackish. Wednesday is Survivor, Designated Survivor, Goldbergs, Modern Family, Thursday’s is Mom, Scandal, Nashville, How to get away with Murder, and the Imposters. (Bravo). I love that! Friday is Once Upon a Time, MacGyver, MasterChef (jr in season). Will and Grace. Sunday is Timeless, Madam Secretary, Deception, a great new show, American Idol. Clearly my favorite night of the week for TV. And Amazing Race whenever it returns. And Big Brother. Iffy on the new Roseanne.

message 38: by Elise (last edited Apr 10, 2018 11:07AM) (new)

Elise (ellinou) Living Biblically! Man, I wanted to watch it so much, I can't believe I completely missed the premiere!

You seem to watch much more mainstream TV than I do! I constantly have to change my subscriptions because I have shows popping up on the weirdest channels. I have a couple scripted shows on History Channel (Vikings and... one with Jason Momoa whose title eludes me at the moment) and even a scripted show on the Discovery Channel (Genius)! I also have PBS, Bravo, Showcase, E!... All scripted, I'm not one for reality shows really.

message 39: by Joi (last edited Apr 10, 2018 11:19AM) (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Hmmm... I think I'll always choose socializing over books. I could stay at home and curl up with a book- but normally books get put off to the side to be able to hang out with friends, go on a date night, visit a bar or restaurant. Every Tuesday night is bar trivia night.

Also I love musical theater, singing, terrible reality TV, and trivia as well. Double those things up- I LOVE JEOPARDY. Haha,

@Amy and Ellie, we both have some crossover. Handmaids Tale is excellent!! And I also watch Survivor, Masterchef, and Amazing Race. Biggest guilty pleasure TV show? RuPaul's Drag Race!

message 40: by Elise (new)

Elise (ellinou) Jeopardy is wonderful! Apparently when I was a baby when the Final Jeopardy tune started playing, I stopped whatever I was doing and stared raptly at the TV for 30 seconds!

message 41: by Magdalena (new)

Magdalena | 414 comments I watch way too much TV including some of the ones you guys are talking about. I also watch New Girl, Jane the Virgin, Call the Midwife, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Once Upon a Time.

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Glad to see so many TV fans here. I watch a ton of TV and I'm not ashamed to admit it. My diehard shows are SVU, Will & Grace, Dateline, Bachelor, Married at First Sight, Amazing Race, Big Brother, America's Got Talent, Younger, Mom, and Roseanne. On Netflix my faves are Stranger Things, Fuller House, and The Handmaid's Tale. I do watch other shows like The Voice, American Idol, This Is Us, General Hospital, and Days, but I'm only casually into them.

Yes!

Also, we did one a few months ago that was done in the wedding scene of Mockingjay, as well. :-) You don't see a whole lot of the dance itself in Mockingjay (I went looking for it on youtube aferward!), but you do see a little bit!

LibraryCin | 11692 comments And speaking of tv, does anyone know when Outlander will start up again? I will need to figure out which channel it will air in Canada and add that channel back in.

Also, The Handmaid's Tale?

Thanks!

message 47: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments I have to see the reality shows are such a great way to bond with the kids. And occasionally you can actually talk about social themes or more important things in there too. How people treat each other, and about world differences. “Do you notice each of the tasks/challenges are indigenous to the country’s culture?” Or that the teams get to see a culture or part of the world while they are racing? How people react or vote upon eviction.... Big brother, Amazing Race, Survivor and MasterChef and the Goldbergs are house staples for us. And my son lives MacGyver. Me too - that guy is so handsome I could dream about him. But the guy is a ninja and a physicist. But this season is all about Macgyvers father and the complicated relationships involved and he’s into it. I don’t play basketball or baseball or soccer or football or run 8 miles a day. They don’t read or sing. So this is great family time together. We love the Goldbergs. It’s hilarious and moving.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments For some reason, my Tivo doesn't record Masterpiece anymore --- I ended up missing Victoria.

My husband and I were just commenting that we are slowly running out of shows that we watch together. He doesn't like Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which is a musical, Amy), or things like Grey's and Scandal. We do watch Top Chef, Amazing Race and then some comedies like BBT and Life in Pieces.
