Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Anyone tried it?

Would you use it?

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments 1. No

2. Probably not - I don't listen to audio books.
I tried a couple years ago (very likely almost 20 years ago thinking about it) when my nephew and I were travelling up to Scotland. Obviously I wasn't keen enough to continue the experiment.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The advantage of audio is that you can do something else at the same time. The disadvantage is that I usually get distracted by what I'm doing. So - no. I read.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I wonder if Tim would use it. I know he likes audio books.

I zone out and think about anything else. I enjoy podcasts but frequently have to rewind them when I've zoned out.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I love audio books - they are my bedtime stories, therefore they must not be too interesting or I can't fall asleep, they must be slightly funny too and a little bit clever so I have nice dreams... Can't have earplugs otherwise I might strangle myself.

Fussy old bag here. Works brilliantly. Hubby falls asleep the moment he hits the pillow, often before.

Hang on, I thought your car had an 8 track.

Tim | 8539 comments No, cos it's Android, and I don't Android.

Now if they did an iOS version, sure I'd give it a try . . .
(yes I'm a big fan of audiobooks :D )

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments I'd love to get into audio books, but can't focus on the story.

message 10: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Apparently something like knitting (!!) helps focus. If I listen to the radio in the evening (very rarely, only when hubby is out) I have to occupy my hands. I can't read, no longer knit, so I file my nails or do other little jobs like that. Sorry, I can't think of anything men would do...

message 11: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Mostly I listen when I'm out walking, or in the car, on the train etc.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I can't wear earbuds out walking. I fall over.

previous had cassette, this one has CD :-) (Ironically 8 track is technology that passed us by at the time )

I cannot walk and travel wearing headphones listening to music, it's nearly as bad as being blindfolded :-(

Thats the vodka, Patti.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ive not had vodka in ages.

I'm with Jim on that.

I just knit and read...

message 17: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments How can anyone knit and read at the same time - or is it all plain one line and then purl the next? I'd probably stab myself. If it were knit one, purl one, I'd be lost by the end of the first sentence.

I suppose your left side of the brain could manage the reading and right side manage the hands. What do you do with your feet?

message 18: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments As long as the pattern's simple I can do it. Fair aisle or aran, nope! My feet - usually just twinge arthritically!

message 19: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments I used to knit and watch TV but not read - that's dangerous as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, now I know why you achieve so much in the same time as I get.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I reckon I'm doing well if I can read and stay conscious.

Yes it's when you wake up with the book on the floor and the half drunk mug of coffee hanging precariously from your fingertips.....

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I wake every morning with my kindle wound up in the duvet.

message 23: by David (new)

David Hadley I would do audiobooks if I could find the time, but I'm too busy with podcasts, I'm only just now in April getting around to the Christmas time episodes.

I did listen to Bill Bryson's Australia audiobook and that was excellent. Also Shakespeare plays are very good in audio versions too.

Pat () | -245 comments Hi folks, just popped in. I listen to audiobooks all the time now, more so than reading. If I could find something to read my library of e-books that would be just wonderful.

message 25: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Hi Pat, I'm sure a techie in the group will tell you how it can be done.

Really? I have two of them. One small and a large one. I didn't know they could read to me. Must go and try. Thanks, Kath and Anna
Ah, no I meant the impossible job of reading non-audiobooks to me. Just a pipe dream.

message 28: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You can actually get a device for reading a paper book - used by those with eyesight problems. Can't remember what it's called and I've no idea how it turns the pages!

message 29: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Did you find it on your Fire, Pat? Tap the page you're reading and the small script at the bottom says tap Play to listen to Text-to-Speech. There's a little circular icon and an arrowhead next to it. Tap the black arrowhead.

Oh, I tried on the small one but it too small to read the icons. so I tried o the bigger one and can't find that icon anywhere. Do I need to set anything up first? Thanks for trying to help me

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12605 comments Pat, I was curious so tried it but had to go in settings first to enable speech to text

Yay! I did it. yes, I had to set the text to speech too.

Thanks again Kath and Desley

Pat () | -245 comments Pity about the punctuation !

message 34: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Mine respects the punctuation. The keyboard kindle would pause at a comma but read straight through full stops.

message 35: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments That seems to be what mine is doing, but doesn't even pause at a comma. Do I need to do anything else for it to work properly? Perhaps I'd better email you, rather than clutter up this thread. Sorry folks.

message 36: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It might depend on the version of software you've got. I don't think there's anything you can do. I use mine for final proofreading of my books. Very useful.

message 37: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments OK thanks Kath

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oiy!

Please don't ever worry about cluttering up a thread, lovely Pat.

Any random question or answer could help anyone who may be too shy to post.

message 39: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Yes, it's useful info. I didn't know Kindles would read to you.
