Aliya Huggins Delirium is a dystopian novel written by Lauren Oliver. Set in the future the United States has declared love as a disease, it is said to turn people against each other ruining true happiness. As a result everyone must go through a procedure when they turn eighteen. Lena Haloway, a seventeen year old girl, is excited for her birthday in a few months. Soon she will be free of the dangers of love. On the day that will decide her future, evaluation day, disaster strikes. The building where her test will take place is herded by cattle, a prank made by a boy with hair like autumn leaves. Later she sees this boy while on a run. His name is Alex. Alex opens up her eyes. Lena is starting to find herself having feelings she's not supposed to have. It's the disease, but everyone is wrong about it. Love is actually true happiness. The one thing she was taught right is that it's dangerous, but in ways she didn't imagine. The government has made it dangerous to be able to love but love itself is freeing. The irony in Lena’s story is strongly shown, before Alex she was sure that love was disastrous, but now she is sure it is normal to love each other, and that it is happiness. This love story is symbolic to the way of allowing people to have the freedom to choose their own decisions. In this story they are fight for the freedom to choose love but the authors careful placement of figurative language and subtle hints shows that the story means the freedom to choose one’s own path in life. Lenas deep underestimated emotions keep the readers interest in how the story will play out. Delirium is highly recommended to those who are good at inferring and picking out small details. This love story deserves a five star rating.
