Art and I were talking about our group's privacy and what people could read. It was something I hadn't thought about. I say in the summary of the group that it is adult only, but I left the age restriction off because I was thinking I didn't want to exclude 16 or 17 year olds from nerding out with us.

I also left the group privacy as Public. Again, my thought on it was that people could join as they please. I didn't put any thought into people reading our posts and threads without being a member. Not that I see us as exclusive or anything. I just didn't even think about it.

So, I'm putting the question to those who are members now. Below are the 4 settings that we can choose from. My new thought, after talking about it over, is to move our settings to "This group is restricted" settings. But again, I wanted everyone to have a say in this.

This group is public: Anyone can join this group. Anyone can view the group information and discussion board.

This group is restricted: New members must verify they own an email with one of the listed domains. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the discussion board.

This group is private: New members must be approved by the group moderators. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the polls and discussion board. Only Moderators can invite new members.

This group is secret: New members must be approved by the group moderators. The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Only members can see the group information, polls, and discussion board. Only Moderators can invite new members.

I think it's great that everyone gets to have a say in this. I for one also lean towards the 'the group is restricted' option, but it's just my own peculiar preference.

I guess either public or restricted. I mean, it's not like I'm saying anything that people can't read. If everyone else wants restricted I will agree.

I vote for public. The reason is that now we have a cozy little group but we want to grow. |potential members can browse the board and see whether they fit w/o getting a membership first.

all valid points. For now we'll leave it as public, but this isn't a one and done discussion. I think we should leave this topic open and if anyone changes their mind or as we get new members, they can put their hat in this topic.

I've heard of some people having had bad experiences. Trolls that don't like what you say about their book or group so they will follow you and say dumb things. Also, we do talk about some personal stuff in our discussions. Anyone would be able to look at that and that might cause issues as well.

I'm not saying anyone is having trouble with our group. These were just something of things Art and I were talking about as we both feel responsible for everyone's safety and we want everyone to have fun without worry.
