Katarzyna (katarzynamarie) | 113 comments 1) A long, long time ago
2) I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
3) And I knew if I had my chance
4) That I could make those people dance
5) And maybe they'd be happy for a while
6) But February made me shiver
7) With every paper I'd deliver
8) Bad news on the doorstep
9) I couldn't take one more step
10) I can't remember if I cried
11) When I read about his widowed bride

13) The day the music died
14) So, bye, bye, Miss American Pie
15) Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry

Please post on this thread which line and word you are currently working on, so multiple people don't end up working on the same word (unless it appears twice of course). All words that have been claimed will appear in bold font above.

Gabi | 563 comments Hi everyone!! This is my first time doing a team challenge, and wow am I excited! How do I check in? Do I simply add a comment here?

I would like to take the word "time" from Line 1. I've been meaning to read A Wrinkle In Time, but we don't start until May 1st, right?

Katarzyna (katarzynamarie) | 113 comments Nice! I think that I will start with the word "I" from Line 2, using the book Illuminae.

message 14: by Amaryllis (last edited Apr 21, 2018 02:42PM) (new)

Amaryllis (amellin) I would also like to do "one" from Line 9. :) (With the book Ready Player One)

Natalie (esaria) | 4273 comments Hiya! Checking in c:

I also made a spreadsheet (which I will post tomorrow because I’m on my phone ._.) for use with this challenge if it makes things easier for keeping track of words etc :)

message 17: by Katarzyna (new)

Katarzyna (katarzynamarie) | 113 comments Hi Natalie!! I will check you in. Also, a spreadsheet would be very helpful for keeping track of words! Thank you so much for making one!!

message 18: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (esaria) | 4273 comments Spreadsheet can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

This one is the personal one for our team (I also have a "master" version that I sent around to all teams doing the challenge because this challenge is confusing as hell ._.)

Not sure whether we need all the features or not, so would appreciate some input! c:

I'm glad you like it! :D

I normally join serious/medium teams so I'm used to having spreadsheets handy for keeping track of everything so I made one for this challenge as well ;D (Plus, the challenge seemed otherwise impossible to keep track of ._.)

It did seem like a rather daunting task to keep track of. Just so you know, I added all of the page counts to the spreadsheet, as well as the potential page points. :)

Thank you! I usually decide what I'm going to read on the fly, but I will definitely let you all know in advance when I decide what to read, and this month I will try to come up with a TBR and get right back to you!

Morgan (futuremiddlelibrary) | 111 comments Hey guys! Checking in!! Also I can take the word "remember."

I have always wanted to try Nicholas Sparks, so I think A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks might be a good start!!

Thank you for checking me in! When I first read through the rules for the challenge I was pretty intimidated (had to read it twice), but you and Natalie have really smoothed a lot of this out and I'm feeling pretty good about the challenge! I can't wait for May 1st!!

message 35: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 563 comments I believe each team gets a pass on one word, but I think we have to decide on the word before May 1st. I was thinking February, Chevy, or widowed maybe? Those sounded like the trickiest to knock out. Any ideas?

message 36: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (esaria) | 4273 comments My vote would probably go to either Chevy (7 counts), Whiskey (7 counts), or levee (14 counts).

There's one February and one Widowed so I don't think those should be an issue in the long run? c:

Good call! Are we able to still pick levee, since another team already picked that one?

message 38: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (esaria) | 4273 comments As far as I'm aware you can pick whichever word you like, I don't think other teams choosing it would prevent your team from being able to do so?

message 39: by Katarzyna (new)

Katarzyna (katarzynamarie) | 113 comments By my understanding, we can pick any word regardless of what any of the other teams decide to pick. I think that I would be inclined to pick "Chevy" or "whiskey" over "levee". My reasoning is that for whichever word we pick, we can't earn points for that word, and levee seems like the easiest of the three to be able to get completions for. Also, it comes with more opportunities for us to gain points in contrast to the other two words.

I think you might be right. Chevy or Whiskey seem a better choice than levee. 🤔 or, the words "The", "That" or "I" because they're repeated often and if we skip them we can get faster through the text.
Word count:
The - 82 times
I - 34 times
That's - 18 times

I am using The Mystery of the 99 Steps (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, #43) by Carolyn Keene

message 42: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 563 comments I already have one word marked down for me. I was wondering if it's okay to mark down another word? Or do you stick with one word at a time?

faith (lunaslovelies) | 780 comments planning to use The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass for 'the' in line 13!

message 45: by Katarzyna (new)

Katarzyna (katarzynamarie) | 113 comments Hi Marya!! I was thinking that maybe we leave the little words, as they are easy points for us to grab. Considering they do appear so often in book titles, they would also be able to be completed easily using one book as opposed to multiple books. Just a thought... :)

Hi Gabi!! You can absolutely mark yourself down for multiple words at a time! :)

Hi Faith!! I will check you in right now. Glad to have you on the team! :)

message 46: by Amaryllis (new)

Amaryllis (amellin) @Chloe but every book only counts for one word/letter, right? that would mean reading a lot of books with these words in the title or every member reading the same books to get them done. which means less time for other words 🤔

message 47: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 563 comments Yay, thank you! I was hoping to mark down the word "bride" for The Ship of Brides, please!

I was just thinking that in order to do the longer repetitive words like "Chevy" and "whiskey" we would probably end up reading the same amount of books, as they might take quite a few books to complete each word each time it appears. That would mean less time to devote to other words in the song, as the time used to read three books for one word could be time used to read three books for three words. Just my personal opinion...

I definitely do see your point though!!

If choosing between the three words you mentioned, I would probably vote for the word "that" because it is found in less titles as the full word. I can think of plenty of titles that begin with the word "the" or have a word starting with "I" in the title.
