THE LAST SETBACK LEVEE, situated in fictional Almudena County along the banks of the Mississippi River, weaves a narrative of historical social change in the mid-century South with the life of Bonita Carroll. After inheriting a mosquito infested swamp that she longs to drain and farm, her brother, husband, and best friend conspire to prevent her because of what's hidden there. At once the story of Bonita striving to overcome her station in life, THE LAST SETBACK LEVEE explores the impact of decisions made when longing for something other than truth.

Opening 10%. Bonita has had a tough life. Quite a simple style, also rather unemotional in a way that reminds me of Steinbeck.

41%-I’m surprised at the way they’re supposedly working together but clearly thinking selfishly of their own ambitions/hopes.

30% They seem to do a lot of eating and drinking but not much else so far.

62% - (view spoiler)[ The casual nature of Eleanor’s death in childbirth is hard to take. Got a real sense of each character pulling in different directions at the moment, and not sure quite where they’ll end up. (hide spoiler)]

74% - I’m quite amazed at some of the things this family are doing. Genuine small-town family made good, though I’m sensing a mighty fall from grace.

Finished. Review on home page. Simple style of writing but broad scope. I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. Reminded me of Steinbeck.

I have to agree they all seem to be making plans for each other behind their backs.

Finished I did not expect that ending at all and the book way way better than I thought it would be :)
