Thought I’d get the conversation started. Who should we pick for our first portal hero?

I’m inclined to vote for Zorro because the challenges are easy, but would gladly choose Indiana Jones and/or Dr. Who because their characters are awesome.

Im for Doc Who, but would be absolutely fine with Zorro or Indiana Jones as well.

I think Dr. Who may be easier. But the other choices look good to me -Zorro or Indian Jones

Doctor Who would be my first choice too, I think the challenges sound the easiest to find books for, but again, Indy or Zorro would be good second choices. I think I'd go for Zorro over Indy if it comes to it but there's not much in it.

Dr. Who or Zorro sound good to me.

Getting close to our 2nd portal hero, any thoughts on whom to pick? I was thinking about Popinjay, anyone else have any thoughts?

I was looking at Popinjay and I'm wary of the 2nd and 3rd tasks, to be honest. Haha.

But if everyone else is game, I'll be on board. The only other suggestion I'd have is maybe Hardcase?

I'm fine with Hardcase too

I thought Indiana Jones might be the easiest to get books for, but again am happy to go with the consensus. Hardcase looks a little easier than Popinjay but there's not much in it for me.

I think I’d prefer Indian Jones but am more than willing to get behind any hero.

Can I be really awkward and vote for Space Ghost

After looking at the list again and seeing what other folks have said they'd be happy with here, I think my vote goes to Hardcase.

Maybe we could use this thread to make suggestions for the categories if people are struggling to find things, whichever hero we choose. I think all of them have one part that sounds tricky to complete.

My vote would go to poppinjay.

Someone throw it in a random selection generator since we seem to be pretty split on the choice.

Ok, if folk want to go down the random selection route (which I'm also very happy with)....
Assigning numbers 1-4 to each character in the order listed by Melanie above and adding in space ghost at the end:
Popinjay - 1
Hardcase - 2
Indiana Jones -3
Space ghost - 4

I used random.org (a very reliable site) to generate a random number and it came out with: 1

So the winner is Popinjay.

People happy with that?

Thanks Dawn, that's a real help. It was the criterion I thought would be the most difficult and I've got that book on my Kindle waiting to be read.

For private investigator, there are a lot out there with supernatural PI characters, but one of my favourites is the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. They're thrillers but with a bit of a horror vibe going on with dark things happening that can't entirely be explained rationally. Oh, these also have a hitman as one of the characters if anyone needs Devil-Slayer/Reformed Hitman.

Any of the Hard Luck Hank book ( Screw The Galaxy ). They are light comedic sci-fi.

The Greatcoat series have a mantra that is repeated often. I know it's in the first two books, Traitor's Blade and Knight's Shadow. Not sure after that but i'm going to try the third one and see.

I suppose something like The Three Musketeers would also work for the catchphrase, assuming it's in the book and not just a movie invention...

For PI, I recenty read a book by Mike Resnick called Stalking the Unicorn. It was meh okay. I would imagine any of the Dresden Files books would work also. I've only read the first.

Thanks everyone! Popinjay just got really easy! I've got a Dresden files and Greatcoats books already waiting on my shelves. Although I may try Hard Luck Hank anyway since it looks really fun and use the Greatcoats book for something else.

Also, for popinjay no.2 both Words of Radiance and Oathbringer qualify because of the teleportation Oathgates. The only drawback its that they are really long reads but if they're on your TBR already then Popinjay is a good excuse to get them off the shelf.

ohhh...forgot about oathbringer, I've been looking for an excuse to read that again.

I've got no real preference between those two, happy to go with the majority verdict or, if there's no clear winner, with a coin toss :-)
