message 1: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Thought I’d get the conversation started. Who should we pick for our first portal hero?

message 2: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments I’m inclined to vote for Zorro because the challenges are easy, but would gladly choose Indiana Jones and/or Dr. Who because their characters are awesome.

message 3: by Milou (new)

Milou | 103 comments Im for Doc Who, but would be absolutely fine with Zorro or Indiana Jones as well.

message 4: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 197 comments I think Dr. Who may be easier. But the other choices look good to me -Zorro or Indian Jones

message 5: by Vinca (last edited Apr 22, 2018 10:52PM) (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments Doctor Who would be my first choice too, I think the challenges sound the easiest to find books for, but again, Indy or Zorro would be good second choices. I think I'd go for Zorro over Indy if it comes to it but there's not much in it.

Dr. Who or Zorro sound good to me.

Dawn | 1249 comments Are we going with Doctor Who?

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments Dawn wrote: "Are we going with Doctor Who?"

Seems to be the most popular choice here so I'd say yes. Zorro comes in a close second.

message 9: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Seems like the consensus! Who wants to announce for the team?

message 10: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1249 comments Done. The Doctor is ours!

Woop! Thanks Dawn :-)

Getting close to our 2nd portal hero, any thoughts on whom to pick? I was thinking about Popinjay, anyone else have any thoughts?

message 13: by ♥ Joy Joy ♥ (new)

♥ Joy Joy ♥ (joylia) | 456 comments I was looking at Popinjay and I'm wary of the 2nd and 3rd tasks, to be honest. Haha.

But if everyone else is game, I'll be on board. The only other suggestion I'd have is maybe Hardcase?

I'm fine with Hardcase too

message 15: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments I thought Indiana Jones might be the easiest to get books for, but again am happy to go with the consensus. Hardcase looks a little easier than Popinjay but there's not much in it for me.

message 16: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments I think I’d prefer Indian Jones but am more than willing to get behind any hero.

message 17: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Popping Jay, Hardcase, IndianJones? What is your will?

message 18: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1249 comments Can I be really awkward and vote for Space Ghost

message 19: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments After looking at the list again and seeing what other folks have said they'd be happy with here, I think my vote goes to Hardcase.

Maybe we could use this thread to make suggestions for the categories if people are struggling to find things, whichever hero we choose. I think all of them have one part that sounds tricky to complete.

message 20: by Milou (new)

Milou | 103 comments My vote would go to poppinjay.

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments We're going to have to roll a 4-sided die - anyone got one? 😂

Someone throw it in a random selection generator since we seem to be pretty split on the choice.

^I like this idea :D

message 24: by Vinca (last edited Aug 06, 2018 08:49AM) (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments Ok, if folk want to go down the random selection route (which I'm also very happy with)....
Assigning numbers 1-4 to each character in the order listed by Melanie above and adding in space ghost at the end:
Popinjay - 1
Hardcase - 2
Indiana Jones -3
Space ghost - 4

I used random.org (a very reliable site) to generate a random number and it came out with: 1

So the winner is Popinjay.

People happy with that?

Dawn | 1249 comments Popinjay it is!
Vinca, are you going to do the honours and tell Wayland?

message 28: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments I thoroughly approve of making decisions this way! Who wants to notify Wayland officially?

message 29: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments Sure, I'll head over to the other thread just now.

message 30: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1249 comments And if anyone has any tips on books I'd love to hear them.
I'll start with Ack Ack Macaque for no.3-catchphrase. I've just read this so I'm looking for another if anyone has any suggestions?

message 31: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments Thanks Dawn, that's a real help. It was the criterion I thought would be the most difficult and I've got that book on my Kindle waiting to be read.

For private investigator, there are a lot out there with supernatural PI characters, but one of my favourites is the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. They're thrillers but with a bit of a horror vibe going on with dark things happening that can't entirely be explained rationally. Oh, these also have a hitman as one of the characters if anyone needs Devil-Slayer/Reformed Hitman.

I answered you yesterday, but the internet seems to have deleted it?

Any of the Hard Luck Hank book ( Screw The Galaxy ). They are light comedic sci-fi.

The Greatcoat series have a mantra that is repeated often. I know it's in the first two books, Traitor's Blade and Knight's Shadow. Not sure after that but i'm going to try the third one and see.

I think that might have ended up in the other thread by accident...

I suppose something like The Three Musketeers would also work for the catchphrase, assuming it's in the book and not just a movie invention...

message 35: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (fogjuice) | 191 comments For PI, I recenty read a book by Mike Resnick called Stalking the Unicorn. It was meh okay. I would imagine any of the Dresden Files books would work also. I've only read the first.

message 36: by ♥ Joy Joy ♥ (new)

♥ Joy Joy ♥ (joylia) | 456 comments For PIs, there is a fantasy series called Harbinger P.I by Adam J. Wright.
Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...

It's free with Kindle Unlimited if you have it.

Also Garret PI, Sweet Silver Blues, by Glen Cook (known more for The Black Company...)

message 38: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 1249 comments Thanks everyone! Popinjay just got really easy! I've got a Dresden files and Greatcoats books already waiting on my shelves. Although I may try Hard Luck Hank anyway since it looks really fun and use the Greatcoats book for something else.

Also, for popinjay no.2 both Words of Radiance and Oathbringer qualify because of the teleportation Oathgates. The only drawback its that they are really long reads but if they're on your TBR already then Popinjay is a good excuse to get them off the shelf.

ohhh...forgot about oathbringer, I've been looking for an excuse to read that again.

message 41: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 1691 comments Hard Case and IndianJones are left. Which is our preference, assuming we get to pick first?

message 42: by Milou (new)

Milou | 103 comments I’d prefer Jones

message 43: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1562 comments I've got no real preference between those two, happy to go with the majority verdict or, if there's no clear winner, with a coin toss :-)

message 44: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (fogjuice) | 191 comments I'd also prefer Dr. Jones
