I am half way through this novel and am enjoying reading about the harsh living conditions of Scottish immigrants on the prairies in the 1860s in Iowa. The story is about Wully McLaughlin (a young returned soldier) and his new young Scottish wife, Chirstie. Wully has been gifted land from his father that is next to where his parents live. Wully builds a house for his new wife and baby. So far, good character development and an interesting plot. It's an easy to read novel with a fairly straight forward, descriptive writing style. A little like Edna Ferber's 'So Big'. The book, The Able McLaughlins was first published in 1923.
