Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished Book 10. It's going faster now that I have stopped looking up all the unfamiliar names! The battle scenes in Book 10 were quite gory - I don't know why but that took me aback.

Leslie | 16369 comments I am finished - while I was a bit disappointed with Fagles' translation, the supplementary materials (map, glossary, notes, etc.) made up for it.

I got quite annoyed with Juno (Hera) by the end -- she stirs up Turnus to fight, then complains that Aeneas is battling with him, blaming the Trojans! I don't think that it is ever explicitly stated why she hates the Trojans so much; I assume that she was angry that Paris didn't choose her (in the incident with the golden apple that started the Trojan War).

Pink Well done Leslie! I haven't read this for a while, but don't want to give up!

I found that I enjoyed it more when I didn't worry so much about trying to figure out who all the named people were from notes/internet/etc. and just went with what Virgil told me about them. Some of the books seem to have roll calls of names & I wonder how many of them were familiar even to Virgil's contemporaries!!

You can make it to the end too Pink - don't give up!

Pink Thanks for the encouragement Leslie. I've enjoyed reading each book, but I never feel the pull to pick it back up. I don't think it helps that I'm reading an ebook on my phone, I'd prefer a paper copy, but my library doesn't have any of the translations I'd like. I'll try to push on and take it slowly. It's good to know that you enjoyed it more as time went on.

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) I see I am late to the party, but I read Robert Fitzgerald's translation of this poem last December. Here is my thoughts on the poem: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
