Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments I'm back from vacation and trying to catch up. Yikes, what you miss in a week!
I didn't have internet access except on my phone which was fabulous in many ways but it also meant I didn't check in as I would have liked.
Please feel free to plug these in wherever you need, I had reserved some categories but I see some of them were filled already (totally fine!) so wherever these are useful (and I can plug in characters, author, etc in the spreadsheet if needed for spells - just let me know).

I didn't get as much reading done as I would have liked. Vacationing, even without a schedule, with a 5 year old means a lot more active time than I anticipated - and no more naps! We did listen to two audiobooks in the car though and got thru most of a third that I will post when we are finished next week.

Completed (and added to the spreadsheet):
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (audiobook, unabridged)
L. Frank Baum
137 pages (from the Kindle copy I own)
May 30th 2018

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
Gail Honeyman
327 pages
May 30th 2018

The Scribe of Siena
Melodie Winawer
464 pages
28 May 2018

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (audiobook, unabridged)
J.K. Rowling
320 pages (from copy I own)
30 May 2018

I will read thru the posts and catch up. Won't be gone again until late June/early July and will be taking my laptop with me then as it's three weeks away for work.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm not going to finish The Black Prism as soon as I thought. I thought it seemed like I was too close to the end of the audio book compared to how the story was going. Turns out there's like a glitch in the time shown and the book is a whole lot longer. But I will try to finish it soon. I'm going to pick up a print version at the library so I can switch back and forth.

I don't care where you put the book so if someone else reads a knife cover book feel free to move this elsewhere.

I read War Storm and that would definitely go with Defense against dark arts can be used with Year 2 (dark art) there's a character (Princess Iris) who has Nymph powers (view spoiler)

JanEyre9 I was planning to read The Sword in the Stone to use the sword as a defense against a basilisk. I see on the SS that won't work so for now I am going to take the sword off the SS and put that read on hold. I only want to read it if it works for a defense. Just wanted to let you know why that went off the list :)

*I'm revising this comment if you've already read this...erased just so I wasn't confusing anyone...
Can you please quantify specifically:
War Storm--The Defense...Nymph powers...what is the power? does it look like anything we could describe
Behind Her Eyes--The Dark Art...what is the dark art specifically?

You can put on the SS if that's easier for you...
Thanks much!

I was trying to find someone standing 'full body' close. I think 'most of a body' would probably be ok too...if a face works...I personally have several of those on my tbr for other challenges over the next couple of weeks so we wouldn't need a face...hopefully this makes sense.

the part about 'water from the tip of a wand' is what's throwing me off. I've looked for water from wands too and found nothing. I might spy on some other team threads to see if anyone's discussed this one...
I think your water here works for 'drinkable water' though.

another thought on water from wand...does this particular spell actually happen in the HP books...I don't recall so far...I'm just on book 4...almost done...book 5 is next...I do hope to read all of them for the duration of this challenge...we'll see

This book has bats on cover, so I was thinking we could use it for transfiguration and the old cliche - vampire into a bat or human into a bat. What do ya think?

message 529: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 2127 comments Maybe water from the wand could be like empty glass vs full glass?
OR
Not take it so literally. How about a desert scene on cover and then some large water scene on cover? Creating water in desert?

Tammie | 4553 comments JanEyre9 wrote: "I'm trying to think of other water options. Could it be a dry fountain and a working fountain? Clouds without rain then clouds with rain?"

I saw some discussion in another thread about this water spell...the note said: Water-making can be as easy as one empty glass and one water glass. Or a house and a house by a lake...I'm not as confident so maybe Ashley could weigh in...the darn 'wand' reference is bothering me...I'm wondering if the water was at least 'pouring' from something like the fountain you suggested...

I think yes...transfiguration could probably be just about anything honestly...one of the reasons we've left it alone...if you book fits nothing else...certainly put it there. We'll need to write a story as well...so we can always use it for that too...

keep in mind...it needs to be paired...
title to title or cover to cover
title to cover does not work...

If we wanted to use the Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman for the summoning charm since you are thinking you might need a body closer up you might be able use Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple for turquoise which is where I think we currently have Eleanor Oliphant plugged in. Thoughts? Tin Eye says Where'd You Go, Bernadette is 51% green though with the background included although I would have sworn it was turquoise.

51.9 % Downy (Green)
16.2 % White Linen (Grey)
15.5 % Black (Black)
6.2 % Maroon (Brown)
2.4 % Sweet Corn (Yellow)
2.2 % Dark Cerulean (Blue)
2.2 % Suva Grey (Grey)
1.7 % Pale Turquoise (Blue)
0.8 % Blue Chill (Green)
0.7 % Cardinal (Red)

turqouise is tough...it's one where I could see the mods being picky about. I honestly wish we had +50%...I've been looking and haven't found anything...I think we'll be OK with what we have though...

Sounds good...we can use for spellout, our story or transfiguration. Perhaps list a few character names on the spreadsheet so we have those options if needed. vowels are hard to come by if you have those names in the book...

Totally agree I went through most of the books on the goodreads lists of Turquoise covers and most of those aren't technically turquoise. There is a book called Turquoise however which might be a better fit if we felt like a 50%+ requirement was going to exist. I wish the rules on that were spelled out a little more clearly as to what constitutes a baseline expectation.

I do think it's a combination of common sense...if you look at it and it screams turquoise I think that's good enough...however because this particular color is between green and blue, I think it's wise to at least have something that calls out the color. I hate reading books for just the sake of reading for a challenge...at a minimum I think it needs to be somewhat appealing and 'fun' to read for one of us. I still think we are OK though...we can defer to Ashley...I think if she's in agreement we are more than OK.

- Don't be too literal with it. It doesn't need to come from the wand. Remember that spells come from the tip of the wand and we don't need the wand for the fire/summoning etc.

In my (humble) opinion it's turquoise. I see turquoise as the sea blue/green and this is it. The background colour is over half so works for me!
