I think it looks brown too! I can fill in wherever I need to so I'm happy to read to my heart's content and let people fill in. I'm just not a big fantasy reader so some of these challenges will be harder for me to contribute to (I'm thinking about Dark Arts in particular).

I know what you mean...I have 2 series going that may contribute...Harry Potter and Kate Daniels...I’m near the beginning for both...but I cannot read them back to back without others I love more thrown in there..

Ashley | 1439 comments Kate wrote: "Is it better for one person to take a class and focus on filling it out or better to just slot books in as we go that fit? Should we call something if we think we are going to be able to cover it - especially the charms? Ugh, the charms. :)
."

No...There are quite a few books per class and I don’t want someone taking on responsibility of reading 7, 8, 14 + books. Too much pressure!

Kate wrote: "then maybe taking on the History of Magic class by plowing thru the remaining Diana Gabaldon series (starting with Dragonfly in Amber as I've read Outlander). That would rack up both page counts and take care of 7 books easily and would free up people and books for other classes."

This is the class that I would leave and use our left over books for. The essay just uses the book titles and can just be short and sweet. Can’t see potential dramas with it.

JanEyre9 wrote: "Ashley - are we claiming classes in this thread or on the spreadsheet?"

Either is okay. If you claim on the thread then a captain will enter into the sheet for you.

P.S. Great job on the Charms finds! They are really good.

Kate wrote: "Herbology or Charms don't currently tell you what the points are"

From the formulas it looks like 10 points per book used. I’m favouring the unforgivable curses (10 pts but we lose 5 pts per letter not completed).

Arthrimancy is a good one. When completed we receive 1 pt per book read in the challenge. So 7 books could give us 400+ points.

Astronomy is also different. We only receive 0.02 pts per page. This means that we have to read a 500 page book to get 10 points and the whole 7 have to be read to get any at all. It’s good that we plan for this one but we may shuffle books out of this towards the end if we have other classes or spells left over.

Deedee wrote: "Also, so far this is the only place I've posted my completed books. Let me know if there is someplace else I need to post them at! "
Thanks DeeDee! If you want to, you can also post your books in the planning sheet, otherwise here is good.

Look forward to seeing what you find!

Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "I'm just going to hold off on trying to claim any spots. Mostly because I still don't what to look for in anything.

The ARC one seems a bit unfair. I wouldn't even know where to get an ARC."

That’s okay! It can be hard at the beginning because there are tooooo many choices. Just focus on the spells and page numbers in the meantime.

I agree on the ARC! Does anyone here receive them? I haven’t had one in a while… I’ll check this one out in the captain’s thread to see what we can do.

Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "Does the fact that she has a heightened sense of smell that tells her things about people, like being able to smell that 2 people were poisoned, count as "vision"?."

No. That’s a good power but not a vision. It’s more along the lines of psychics that they are looking for. Visions through dreams or trances etc.

Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "In this book, you can see the bank of a river on the bottom left of the cover and the word "ground" is in the title. Will that work for Herbology?"

It needs to be a bit more clear and really earthy. However this book has a werewolf! The Defence Against the Dark Arts class is;

Book 1: Dark Art / Creature in book
Book 2: Title contains a way of defense

So we can have the werewolf from your book and find a book with silver in it to pair up with.

Or we can go to Care of Magical Creatures where we are building a creature. We could use the wolf's body then add other books cover items to it like phoenix wings and a unicorn horn.

Tammie wrote: ""For this task you'll be required to read one book per Hogwarts year, where the book title contains a celestial object (sun, moon, stars. comets, etc)." means...I don't understand the reference to 'hogwarts year'...I've just started reading these...so maybe I'm missing something????"

There are 7 years at Hogwarts so it just means 7 books for the task. Don’t try to make it more complex otherwise you might give the mods ideas :P

Tammie wrote: "Where do you all think I should put
Eclipse (Twilight, #3) by Stephenie Meyer--Twilight Series #3 ?

I think this will work for a lot of tasks! Like my suggestion with Mary it has vampires and werewolves so can use as part of a DADA task.

As Jan said it can work for visions too.

Colour Extraction

I’ll post the Mad-Tineye Moody link on the front page. Remember that common sense prevails. Ie. If it looks red - no need to check. It’s red! Post your book here if you are unsure as well.

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments So I put Pillars of the Earth into TinEye and it's not brown (not a lick of brown actually). I was shocked. At the library yesterday I wandered the aisles looking for a long brown book and while I found lots of brown, I didn't find any over 500 pages. However, I plugged Alexander Hamilton (which I've been meaning to read for a while - started, stopped twice) in and it's over 80% brown. And that sucker is well over 500 pages. I really like the TinEye Extraction Lab by the way, I had fun with it using some other things too.

Update - Sigh - never mind I went in and excluded background color. Ugh. Definitely not enough brown. That background color thing is a killer.

Update 2 - Finally found one - The Whiskey Rebels by David Liss. It was on my mother's Kindle list that we family share and it looks right up my alley - historical fiction, mystery, etc. And it's 67.3% brown with background included and just over 500 pages (517). Whew. I was a mission.

If someone reads a book with a title containing the world "Violet", it can be paired with Cosmic Engineers by Clifford D. Simak that I've finished reading for "Potions". Or does the title have to be "Purple"? and if it has to be purple, will my violet-covered book work??

On the colors for potions...it’s either the color in the title or the actual color of the book cover. Your cover is definitely purple...so that could work on it’s own for purple.

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments I know there was a question about how do we get ARC books. I went and signed up at NetGalley and Jellybooks. Net Galley allows you to set up a profile and request books from publishers. The publishers then can decide whether or not to send you a book (eARC) based on your profile and interests. Jellybooks is a little different - you sign up and then you have to wait until they decide they need someone with your demographic data, area, etc to test read a book. I requested one at NetGalley and got it this morning. We will see how it goes!

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments It's always nice to realize something you are reading fits into one of the challenges without you intending for it to. The main character in the Scribe of Siena has these moments of blackout visions where she feels and experiences what other people are feeling/thinking. Eventually those visions become strong enough that they take her back in time. It was a nice discovery.
