Ghost Whistler The Court of the Air

They never seemed to set the world alight, which I always thought was sad so I'm expecting this thread won't explode.

But I really really enjoyed these books. The writing was fun, punchy and entirely tonally on point. Pure pulpy mashup madness: not quite steampunk, not quite fantasy, not quite science fiction (or scientific romance).

Book 3, The Rise of the Iron Moon, is perhaps the weakest, but that's relative. I loved the recuring characters, the mad world building: a british empire named (satirically) as Jackals ruled by a parliament who hit each other with sticks! There's a kingdom of steam robots who are self aware and can channel voodoo steam gods. There are ancient civilisations, aliens, secrets, magic, seas of boiling water, evil arabian empire that breed monsters using slaves.

I wish Stephen Hunt would revisit these books. I have his subsequent trilogy (the Far Called series, which I'm looking forward to), but haven't heard much from him since.
