What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

CONTAINS SPOILERS I read this book in the mid to late 90's. After some research i figure it was probably published between 1988-1998. What I can remember is that there is a woman staying at a house near a peat marsh. In the bog roman artifacts (coins maybe?) are found and eventually ancient bodies are also found. I believe that there may have been an archaeology element in the story. Odd things begin to happen, some haunting occurs, and possible possession. There is a minor romance plot between heroine and hero. if i remember correctly here may have been a love triangle between some roman soldiers and a girl, which led to the bodies in the bog. It all basically ends with the main heroine and hero being possessed by the roman ghosts into acting out what happened to them and the girl which leads to them solving the mystery.
Any assistance with finding this book would be greatly appreciated. I have been searching off and on for 20 years and no one seems to have heard of it.

This sounds very familiar. Can you remember if it was YA or adult?

Not sure, i'm going to lean towards adult as i remember finding it in my mother's book collection.

This is odd because just two days ago, my neighbor was talking about how they burn peat in Ireland, and I mentioned that bodies discovered in the peat bogs are well-preserved, which I knew partly because of this book - or at least the book (or short story?) I read that was similar to what you described. I hope someone else can remember more about it.

Caitlin, can you tell us more about the modern couple - their jobs (archaeologists?)/skills/interests, how they meet, love/hate at first sight, etc.?

What's the location - country, region? Are the modern couple from this region?
