suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments That's often the problem I have - struggling with all the jargon and having quite limited tech knowledge beyond what I have come to work out for myself. And what I know about how Smart Phones work compared to Laptops could be etched on a grain of Sand - LOL! ;o>

Ideally you could obviously do with getting far more personal recommendations suggested to you instead of having to rely on various articles online.

Well done on persevering with it and managing to work it out all by yourself, Lez Lee ;o>

theDuke | 6492 comments Well..i've heard everything now.....just read about a charming story of a man that has opened a rental shop, specifically for...….VHS movies! He is renting original copies of popular movies, on VHS format, along with VHS players, for those that no longer have them...even the odd Betamax cassette too!

Apparently he's doing well....there's still demand for the old format, namely because...and I have noticed this myself....DVD/Blueray copies often omits scenes out of a original movie/TV series, especially where boxsets are concerned. I've a full boxset of the popular BBC series of Only Fools & Horses, and I have noticed many odd bits had been cut out in lots of the episodes throughout the series, presumably because of time limitations on the DVDs? Plus, original versions of movies often can be different to later digitally remastered copies, the early original Star Wars trilogy is a good example....I must admit, I think I prefer the original cinema versions, to the later CGI doctored versions.

Who here still has a VHS player? *puts hand up!* Mine still works okay, but the picture quality ain't what it used to be..mind you, it rarely gets used much these days!

I wonder what other obsolete technologies will be brought back next? The vinyl record has been coming back for a while now..even the humble music cassette is showing signs of renewing interest, so how about the return of the Gramophone next, along with the oh so heavy & fragile shellac records, mibbe?! The laser disk? Or how about the floppy disk too?! :)

Craig White | 6727 comments no v.h.s player in the hoose, and only 3 tapes that i couldn't bear to chuck ('eraserhead', the clash's 'rude boy' and 'plup fiction'), but by the same token, other than x-box or laptop, don't have a dvd player either. got boxes of cassettes and nothing to play them on, hundreds of records with no deck set up, mini discs with no player, hundreds of cds (see records) - everything becomes obsolete so quickly, why bother!

Lez | 7490 comments 2 working VHS machines and, after a recent cull, about 30 tapes, mostly stuff I’ve taped myself. One Sony Betamax portable video machine (an Ebay replacement as my old one died) again about 30 tapes including some holiday ones as there’s a video camera as well, still working. Got a projector and screen also to show the thousands of slides we took. I’ve just ditched most of them though as they were of no interest to anyone but me.
Two portable reel-to-reel tape recorders and a big box of tapes. A radio-cassette player and a drawer full of tapes. A JVC stereo system from 1991 with floor standing speakers, twin tape decks, radio, CD player and record deck. Still got some LPs and 45s but recently chucked my old 78s. Another radio/CD player. 3 more small radios, 2 digital. A Sony Discman, free with American Express.
A 20-year-old 14” Sony portable telly useful for playing aforementioned videos.

The missing bits from Only Fools... are detailed at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_.... Looks like a lot are because of various background music bits the Beeb couldn't/didn't want to bother licensing. There's also some because a couple of cast members had died. Most of them though are cut on the VHS releases, so nothing to do with DVD.

There's also mention of a few episodes being a touch over 30 minutes on original broadcast, back in the good old days when TV schedules were more 'winging it', and were later brutally cut to satisfy the computer-led scheduling gods on repeat. The BBC were then too lazy to reinstate the uncut version for DVD release.

should be the last three or four series!

message 58: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 10953 comments Must admit I never really watched the show.

As for VHS, I'm baffled as to why anybody would want to go back to it out of choice - unless it's another example of 'post-modern irony' beloved of hipsters.

'plup fiction' - a coprophile's delight? Is that the one with a theme song by Scat Stevens?

Have you seen the ads for the exclusive HMV editions of certain movies on Blu-ray AND DVD that come in a package designed to look like a VHS tape? FFS why would anyone want their dvd in a box that's three times as thick?

Lez | 7490 comments Just gone through a terrible trauma with my iPad. Was using it last night when the screen went completely blank. I knew there was plenty of charge in it so I tried switching it off/on and on/off again to no avail. Plugged charger in anyway - nothing.
Checked online help on my laptop and finally found one that worked: put iPad face down on a cushion, then hit the back a few times (burping).
Was able to use it for a few minutes but when I came back later on it had died again. ‘Burping’ brought me the Apple logo and I was able to enter the passcode, all I got was a screen of 2 halves - black/white, then blank. Still blank this morning, left it charging and went for hosp. appt. and all is now well, it seems. All very worrying.

message 69: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments 'Burping' ... ? ... that's a new one on me, Lez Lee! ;o>

Does it mean that the Battery is not charging itself properly and needs a good jolt to get it to try to do so?

No, the battery icon shows it’s charging as usual in the time it normally does. That’s a good bit of reasoning though!

Lez | 7490 comments It worked fine for a couple of days, then died again. This time I’ve been getting different coloured screens - black, navy, and a yummy shade of purple. At one stage an ‘instruction’ appeared - a depiction of a connecting cable to iTunes on a PC and the word ‘restore’.
Checked online help and found I need the latest version of iTunes which I can’t get on my old MacBook. It will come as no surprise when I say my 2-year-old MacBook Air is also very poorly. I can’t access the internet at all.
I can log on but the screen then shows rows of black and white slashes. I’ve never been completely happy with it, don’t know if it’s just me or it’s a rogue machine.
Wits’ end has been reached and I’m going to have to call in a professional before I’m reduced to messing about with my phone.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments My tablet has become increasingly erratic recently, and yesterday it totally refused to run Youtube and the Google Store, so I had had enough. I have ordered a new one. should get it next saturday. It better work properly!

message 78: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Try using it in front of your old one and see if it starts behaving itself again! ;o>

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments I told the old one I had bought a new one and it intensified the sulking.

message 80: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments don't leave them unsupervised together! the old one is looking for an opportunity to kill the new one, as it's replaced in your affections!

message 81: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I wouldn't mind getting a new one if I had to, I'd just be scared of losing stuff. Also a further complication is Virgin have been replacing SIM cards in phones and tablets. I've done my phone one and was about to do my tablet when it died. I daren't do it while it's playing up, a new one might need a new number and I'd have to talk to someone at Virgin. Aarrgghh!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments Tech wrote: "don't leave them unsupervised together! the old one is looking for an opportunity to kill the new one, as it's replaced in your affections!"

As soon as the new one is set up, the old will go into the spare room with all the other outdated stuff.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments I think I'll just move house and then call a swat team on it! Not sure how much longer I can safely live here. I have been hearing odd noises coming from in there.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

When I use my phone to come on here, I am always missing the 'General' folder. Every other folder is there, and no matter what I do, I can't find a way of bringing it up.
Can anyone point out what is probably blindingly obvious and tell me where I'm going wrong?

message 86: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I've no idea, Poppet? - but all that I can think of is if you click to track on one of the Threads in 'General' you might find that your Phone responds by showing it up and keeping better track of it in future?

message 87: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments If you go to ‘Group Home’ are all 3 of the General threads missing?
I get this:

DISCUSSION BOARD

General

* Amazon exiles

Don't Kill Snails with Salt 4 ... and Beyond ... Creme Eggs & Toasted Teacakes ... Life, the Universe, & Everything!

The Gone But Not Forgotten RIP Thread
................................................................................................
Do you get any of these or do you start with
The Holding Pen?

Not that I’ve any idea how to help!

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

When I go onto DISCUSSION BOARD, I see the title only for each folder. By tapping on a folder title, I then get the individual discussion titles show up (ABC, neverending story, etc.). All of the folders are there except for the 'General' folder. Also, they do not come up in the same order on my phone as they do on my laptop, further confusing me (not difficult!).
I must admit that I do find it very difficult trying to use Goodreads on my phone, but that is probably due to my incompetence as much as anything else! :)

message 89: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I rarely use the internet on my phone as it’s too small but everything’s there. Mine’s a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
Just a thought, when I suddenly stopped getting Talk Classical, it was suggested I try another browser. I changed to Firefox just for that site and it’s fine.

message 90: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 19, 2018 06:15AM) (new)

Think I might have solved the problem - I was using the Goodreads app. Just going to Goodreads through Chrome, I get all the folders and discussions in the order I'm used to seeing on my now broken laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion Lez :)

message 91: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments That’s great! I hate apps, they’re usually missing something. I tried the one for my local taxi which I use a lot. Filled in everything needed, everything went through including my credit card details for a journey the next day.
When they were overdue by 10 mins I phoned them - no record of me at all. Good job it wasn’t urgent. I’m going back to phoning. I only tried the app so I didn’t have to pay in cash.

message 92: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments YAYYY!!! - well done, Lez Lee, and well done, Grizzly! ;o>

message 93: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I agree, Lez. I had to install the Guardian app when I subscribed as it was the only way to stop being buried in adverts. But it is practically impossible to navigate, and you have to do very peculiar things to get it to load the latest stories on the home page. Once the app is installed, though, you have no choice but to use it: if you try to open the web page you are immediately taken to the app instead.

message 94: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Same for me with Which? - completely different layout from the proper website, really fiddly to navigate and the reviews are shortened. Ditched it sharpish.
Gordon, have you got the Guardian Daily Edition? I find it much easier than the main Guardian, though for some reason they don’t have the Observer Azed crossword!

message 95: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments The Daily Edition only runs on iPads, Lez.

Derek W | 1365 comments I'm having a bit of an ongoing discussion with the Yorkshire Bank (along with quite a few other people if you believe the reviews on Trustpilot) regarding their 'new and improved' online banking service.

At he moment it seems incredibly flakey (which I can cope with) but the big issue I have is that they've decided that if you want to make payments over a fairly small amount online, you have to validate them using their android app on your Smartphone/tablet.

Which is a shame if like me you don't have, need or want a Smartphone or an android tablet. They do say that you can ring them to make larger transfers if you can't use their app, but also say that they may charge you for it so they can forget that idea.

Currently they will still let you use the old online banking system which let's me do what I need to do for the time being, but if they shut that down I'll probably have to find a new bank.

It's not good when the tech boys decide they're going to spend your money for you, if you're not in the same head space as them. If, as you suggest it's only an android app, that would not please any of their customers who use iPhones/iPads either.

'Schlimbesserung' appears to be the default setting for a lot of the people who make the decisions in modern Britain. 😠

I had to google 'Schlimbesserung', but yes it does seem that way.

App does appear to be available on Apple but I definitely don't need or want an 'iAnything' so that's out too. It might work on my Kindle Fire since that's a hacked about Amazon version of Android but it's not available from the Amazon app store so I guess it probably won't.

It's the tech-heads; the impression is they simply can't conceive that some people aren't as wedded to the latest devices as they are. 😉
