For the last 8 years, my little FujiFilm JX200 compact camera has taken decent photos..but last week it died with the zoom lens uncharactistically sticking out! No attempts of mine, has managed to resustitate the aging little snap camera....so it's gone to digital heaven.
I need a new one..but i have almost no idea what to go for. I'm not going for another JX200, cos it's long since discontinued, and to be honest..it's battery life was never good & it had no view finder, so trying to take pictures using a screen on sunny days, was impossible due to glare. And i want something bigger & as robust as possible. The JX200 was a tiny thing, and my hands are huge..seeing as i'm not a small chap...plus..i don't like delicate fiddly things. Big buttons is what i want and a chunky body, easy to use, that takes excellent high resolution images, with built in anti shake software, good battery life and decent quality zoom in function. It's got be something i can grip firmly, but not too heavy. Preferable a metal body, and not plastic if poss...there's enough bloody plastic poluting the world already. Usb connection, not bluetooth..i've no interest in bluetooth at all..i like plug in wires. The old JX200 had a poor battery life, so this time, i want something better, & more flexible. Either removable & rechargable lithium AA sized batteries..or a plug in usb charging type. Decent memory storage, but it doesn't need to be massive capacity... A 16 gigs or so, ought to fine. A view finder is a must, plus a screen. The typical adjustment settings & software, for frame size, lighting settings..zoom in..ect...but nothing over complicated or fiddly to operate. The main criteria is, i want one that offers the sharpest, clearest and highest resolution images i can get...for a budget of £100. My old camera had 12.2 megapixels.
If it comes with a tripod, shoulder strap/pouch, Sd cards & other bits..then great, but not essential. But I'd like to have the use of a tripod fuction, as my hands aren't the steadiest. In any case, the new one needs to be as idiot proof as poss to use, cos i've only ever used point and snap cameras in the past. I know nothing about the finer complexities of those professional looking big things with the phalic looking zoom lenses on 'em!
Oh...and while i think of it.....What's a bridge camera? In my head..that's something one might find on a man made construct across water! It's just i'm researching, and apparently this is the next thing up, from a 'beginner' camera...al la a point & snappy one.
And definately..no touch screens..i can't stand those things! They're far too sensitive and way too delicate for my spade like thumpers. I like metal buttons, co i can press 'em like a man, oh yes! I actually manage to break one of my bro's rediculous overpriced iphones some years ago..cos of the screen, it crap! I thumped the screen with my finger, trying to get the bloody thing to do what i wanted it to do (not what it was sending me to, that i didn't ask it to do?!) So in my frustration...i thumped it a little too hard...and it stopped working. Basically..all touch screen technology is shit! For 100s of squids that they cost, i'd expect it to be solidly built..and they ain't.
My drawback when trying to choose a new product, is this: I have a perfectionistic mentality, to the point of banality! I never look at the good reviews for a product first..i go straight to the negative ones...and thus..have rarely ever come across a product that's perfect! I am my own worse enemy.... I always want the most perfect thing there is for as little outlay as possible....does my nut in! Reviews are infuriating to read..cos loads of consumers will say this is fantastic..it's amazing..better than i'd thought it be...and so on...hundreds of 'em.......then you get that one.....with the most scathing, negatively nit picking lambasting review of the lot!
Have a guess which one i pay attention to, the most?! :-D
My logic here is......how can a product that draws so much positivity from a great many customers, get a few or even just one...that says it shit! They say same things....it's the worse thing they ever bought. it's useless..poor quality, doesn't do this or that...and i've had better ones for cheaper..and so on! These people will often go right into the nuts and bolts of a product's faults.....and i'm a sucker for it, even if i have no idea what they're talking about!! 8-S
The daft thing is......once i've bought something..and it kinda meets my standards, then i pat myself on my back..and continue with life. But.......i do get it wrong sometimes! Very wrong! And on those occasions....i will go apeshit! I will have done all the research....drawn up a short list, compared the challengers against one another, weight up the pro and cons for each one, & thus wittled them down one by one..'til i get to THE ONE! I pays me money, it gets delivered, i open it..start to use it..and then realise it an utter pile of shit!
I've been lied to by loads of supposedly happy customers who left glowingly positive reviews, plus 'bought' in to advertising blurbs blurb..and it's nothing like i'd been conned in to thinking it would be...the blind clueless bar stewards! Ooooooo.you dun wanna be around me when that happens....i'm a proverbial Vesuvius!
It's a hellish world to live in..when one knows that perfection doesn't exist..but one unceasingly, unerringly strives to find it anyway! Shit it! :-D
So yeah...anyway..I need a new camera folks..so could some kind soul help me out on this one, please..cheers! :-D

That's what I was thinking! 🤪 So, how much would you be prepared to pony up?

The model is a Pansasonic Lumix FZ70/72...and it's looks pretty good. Nice and chunky, but not too heavy, can take a tripod, pretty good resolution & and has image stability built in. Not a huge memory at 2 Gigs..and it uses a external battery charger, but at least it's not the size of a household brick..
I reckon i could get a 2 year old one for less than a ton. Anybody used one of these?

Review of the beast here, Duke - https://www.photographyblog.com/revie...
As it's a Panasonic, the lens design may have some input from Leica, which is always a good thing IMVHO. The viewfinder is electronic, so if you can at all, it's worth taking a look for yourself before committing. It's been a while since I looked through an EVF, but the early ones were not great. This camera might be recent enough to make it OK, as I understand they're much improved.
Re: your tripod desire. Back in the day I used to have a miniature tripod with a little ball head, which I mounted on the camera when using a long lens (a 200mm f/4 was the longest I generally used handheld on an old SLR) and braced against my chest. It worked surprisingly well. One time I did use a 560mm f/6.8 handheld and got a couple of decently sharp pix.
If you can control your breathing and set a shutter speed of at least the focal length of the lens (so, eg 1/500th for a 500mm) it's possible to get sharp pictures even without a tripod. The above rule is a bit slack for longer lenses, which should be a stop or more faster than the suggested for a 500mm (eg, 1/1000th or 1/2000th), but equally with a short focal length (below 50mm) you can get away with slower speeds.

?????!!!

My Olympus OM-D E-M5 (mark I) is about seven years old and I find the electronic viewfinder just fine: any delay in updating the display is minimal and usually barely noticeable. The EVFs of many newer cameras are better still. There aren't many non-DSLRs with optical viewfinders. My Fujifilm X-10 has one and it's not very useful because the lens obscures part of the view at short focal lengths.

Heya Tim..thanks for the info...even if most of it went straight over my head!!!! lol! I know sweet naff all about shutter speed settings...i just point a camera at whatever i want to capture,...and hope for the best! lol!!! :-D
I apprecaiate your assistance though! :)
Yes i am aware that this has a EVF. Apparently it isn't that fantastic..but from what i've read so far...EVF seem to to be the way to go...as there supposedly far better than the old fashioned optical view finder....or so i've read.
I'm still plumping for the FZ70/72. Looking at a few on Ebay, including one that never been out of it's box..so might be able to nab it for £100+. These cameras sell new for well over £200..so i could stretch to £150 for a little used one.
I've kept the tripod from the the Fujifilm camera. It's only 4 inchs high..so i dunno if it's sturdy enough to hold the Lumix...or if it will even screw on. But worth a try.

Just had a quick look at that one Gordon..looks like a traditional compact..but with a huge lens...and it's 4k with 20+mp...pretty good. A bit pricey for my pocket though. I see it has a Leica lens also, which Tim appears to rate highly, even if I've never heard of them myself!.
Another one to ponder over...not sure i can stretch to that much though.

Ah! The one I looked through was much longer ago than that. 😎

you don't hear women banging on about their lady caves! fnur! parp!"
Because they're always tending their lady gardens and tidying their boxes?

The question is... with all the electronic tech in these cameras today...how durable are they? The FX1000 came with a 5 year guarantee, so i read...so there quite a few of these on Ebay..that are close to the expiration date, hence why they're being sold on.
£200 is a lot to spend on a 2nd hand electronic device that might develop a fault over the next couple of years.

I know this shop, Red Dot Cameras, well. You'd get a six months guarantee on used equipment. Being a Leica, it will also hold its residual value better than the Panasonic equivalents. The power of that 'red dot'!
A group of sample images from the latest iteration of this line, the V-Lux 5 (same 20 MP sensor) - https://en.leica-camera.com/Photograp...

I never realised that cameras today were so expensive now. I thought one could pick up a nice one for few of the folding stuff..but things clearly have changed in last 10-20 years i 'spose.
I'm guessing it's due to the advent of camera phones..as so many folks have those nowadays. Conventional cameras probably needed to up their game to compete..along with the price hike.
I've been speaking to one chap who's selling a 3 year old FZ1000, that has a Leika lens in it, & as you say, it's probably the same one as that V-Lux has.
He hasn't used it for the past year & so looks pretty clean and tidy..and he's asking £250 for it. Comes with all the kit, but no carry bag. It's well over what i'd planned to spend initially...but if this is what these things are commanding nowadays, even for used ones....then i'm gunna have to raid the back of the sofa & the piggy bank! :-)

LOL, you should see what an M series body costs now, Duke - https://www.reddotcameras.co.uk/m-bod...
plus 50mm standard lens - https://www.reddotcameras.co.uk/m-len...
Back in the day, you could get a used M body, plus a two or three lens outfit without utterly breaking the bank. Yes, they were always more expensive than Japanese SLRs, but unlike some of those, the Leica stuff would always hold its value. And that's true, even now. Do an eBay search for Leica M6 and be amazed. Those prices are around or above what the cameras cost brand new back in the 90s!
Researching this stuff over the last couple of days has actually reminded me that some (not all) Panasonic and Leica compacts have actually been the same basic camera body. Only the internal processing of the files has been different, so it's also a question of which of those you'd find preferable.
I agree with Gordon to a point. The best camera is the one you have with you. As you've stated that you don't want something that relies on a touch screen rather than a proper viewfinder, that's the issue. If you have a decent camera store near you, maybe check some things out to see what's available and what features are trending in compacts.

Wiki suggests the FZ1000 and the V-Lux are the same basic camera, with the differences noted above. With regard to what Gordon mentioned above, it might be worth noting that these bodies have a 1" sensor. Most compacts will have a much smaller sensor with an effect on image quality. Whether that would matter to you depends on whether you plan to print your pictures (and to what size) or just view them on a computer, amongst other things, especially the ISO speed you're shooting at.

Excuse me while i pick my jaw up off the floor Tim! Bladdy Nora! £1500 for a 20 something year old camera! Jebus wept!
Well now..you and Gordon have got me thinking now. I was set on bridge..but I'm not so sure now. The problem with compacts, bar the lack of a view finder on many of them...it's the size...as in they're very small!
My hands aren't..so i wanted something bigger this time; however, good point re carrying it around when out and about. Granted i don't do much photography anyway...it's mainly taking pics at home..so on that point...a bridge camera would be fine for that purpose. But..if i do need a camera when out....another compact would make sense.
Mum does have a Samsung Galaxy phone....so if she learns to use the camera feature on it, then...maybe that won't be an issue, as we only need it for short range family snaps.
I could still get a bridge for more detailed photographing..so..on that basis..i'm still looking at a Lumix. A Leica would be nice..but cannot afford those prices! And plus.i'm not into the whole photography fraternity anway....they're just handy when i need to photograph something. The picture quality on the old Fujifilm wasn't brilliant at close ups...so that's why i'm looking for something better. I use it to photgraph items i sell on Ebay. plus photos of the man cave project i've been working on this year. So a non too complicated bridge, with decent image quality & and a view finder would suit me just fine..even it is on the bulky side. The FX1000 maybe a bit heavier than the FZ70/72.....but it has a better EFV & sensor, than it's smaller cousin..so that one is still in the 'frame' (pun intended!) as it were, assuming i can get one for the right price.
I am looking at a couple of Nikons as well...namely a couple of Coolpix models the A10 compact & the P530 Compact Bridge. The A10 is a bit plasticy, but apparently it's the best on the sub £100 compact market. Has 16.1 MP, and uses AA batteries, which is handy & loads of accessories...but no view finder. The P530, is a small bridge, also with 16mp, view finder 1080HD movie recording..and isn't too heavy, weighing in at less than 1/2 kilo.
I'm still set on the FZ1000 though.
Regarding local camera shops Tim......errr...what camera shops? I live in the erse end of nowhere! ;-D
I'm sure there is one..somewhere..but i'd have to Google it first! :)

Interesting....quiet a few Lumix's on that list including the FZ1000...which is still at the top of my very short list. Got my eye on a less than 2 year old one..with all the kit & extras..so still under warranty..but asking price obviously is higher than i intended on paying....but..........

Now then....just as i have fixed the little matter of being cameraless...guess what i now need....(but definately cannot afford to get this month); a new bloody TV!
My LED LG one, has just, this very week, begun to start 'flickering' gently.....suggesting the screen is not long till it'll expire....the bar stewerd! The old CRT TVs used to last for decades...before the intervention of modern digital flatscreens. My LG has served me for just 6 1/2 years. I was hoping to get at least a decade out of it. Grrrr!
Why does modern Technology never seem to last these days?

Quick, break a match before anything else expensive has the chance to mess up! 🤪
My old Sony TV is over a decade old now, and showing no signs of slowing down. It's just the tech is showing its age.

My TV isn't a proper smart jobbie either Gordon...just has a basic update chip....which i've never used. I have just re updated the channels again..(for the umpteenth time this year!)..and fiddled around with the assortment of cable connections at the back..plus...i did that time honoured trick too....as in..switched off the power & turned it on again!
Seems to have done the trick...for now. I now just need to re organise all the channels to where i want them..again. Why can't the channel owners just leave things alone?! Blerdy keep moving channels about..for no apparent reason. And why the hell is Dave +1 on channel 79 ffs?!
I always put those two togther on channel numbers 8 and 9...and shove all the channels elsewhere. All the shopping channels get moved to what i call the 'pergatory area' as in channels 200 onwards...along with those crappy Yank channels too.
And......as a test of me faith, that the Tv will hang on for while longer yet......me remote control for it, is 'wearing out', so found a cheap repro (probably chinese again..where else could it come from?!) for £4, new. No point spending £25 for a proper one..if me gogglebox is about to go for a burton! :-)
Anyway......me new camera is on it's way! :)

Here's one link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4wNc...

I thought i must be the back light...as all the leds are still working. I've already been looking to see if it's poss to buy a new 'backlight' panel..and one can.
Edit, found a YT clip that shows how to do mine. But then i saw how much a new strip costs..never mind the whole kit of 8! Yikes!
Mind you, that said...it's way cheaper than a new TV....so horses for course an all that! :)
Thanks for the link, i'll check it out in due course.

One was bought from Ebay, the other from Amazon themselves, of which i'm now chasing up refunds. I've since learnt that fake cars are rife on the market currently, even Amazon aren't safe, and Ebay vendors may not even be aware of what they're selling...as the packaging is very similar apparently.
The card in question is a San Disk Extreme Pro 64GB 170mb/s SDXC cards, ideal for the FZ1000..but i just keep getting a memory card error message on the screen. Even after formatting, it still doesn't work. So...i still haven't taken a single photograph yet..poo!
I have now brushed up on my research..and since learnt that cards with a yellow locking tab, instead of the proper grey one, used by Sandisk..are fakes..as is the lack of country of manufacturer and a serial number on the bottom of the backs. Both the backs of the two i've bought, had nothing printed/embossed on them at all. Now trying to get refunds..and find somebody reputable that knows what they are selling!
Anybody had dealings with MemoryCow? They score very high on customer feedback. I don't want to shell out another £22-26 on another card until i know i'll get a proper one this time!

Bummer! 🤔🤔🤔
Had a google just to see, and wow! isn't there a huge price variation on these cards - from around the £21 mark right up to £64 or so (step forwards Jessops). Either some sellers are making vast profits, or the cheap ones are likely to be the fakes, as you've found.
I never heard of MemoryCow before now. Sorry.

Yeah..but that depends of capacity i think. The going price for the Pro 64GB, seem to be around the £21 mark or so.
I've taken the plunge and bought one off Memory Cow. They've been trading since 2008..and have a good rep..so fingers crossed.

There are stores in the two county capitol towns nearest to me, Haverfordwest & Carmarthen....but i rarely get to frequent them these days..as i do not drive. About 90% of anything i buy these days is from online stores....and occasionally will do receive a duff product, which is par for the course, i 'spose.
I have had a refund form the vendor..and now i'm waiting for the replacement to arrive, this time from a online specialist store.
Won't get that one till Tues or Weds. If that turns out to be duff..then i've found other stores.
I read that not even supermarkets are safe either from selling counterfeits....Tesco has had apparently been caught for stocking duff memory cards as well recently.
As these things are made in China mainly..there must be a very sophisticated network of multiple manufacturers & suppliers..to allow this to happen, even to major well known stores.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they originate in the same factory as the real items, but maybe failed the quality inspection. Some devices they'll work fine in, but others not, as you've found.
